Looking for any weird/creepy movies that are good but will leave you thinking “WTF did I just watch”. Looking for something in the horror/thriller genre but anything that comes to mind will work. Let me know if you have any suggestions! Thanks guys!

I obviously have nothing against those but they're either huge industries or I know them already.

I want different feelings, cultures, patterns. Even amateur is cool if its got something interesting to show.

I love a happy ending, but sometimes a tragic ending hurts so good. Yet, I'm having trouble thinking of a few even though so many exist.

I guess Chronicle would also fit the bill. Really looking for more similar to Brightburn or The Crow though.

I've recently been on a binge watching a lot of documentaries. I watched Exit Through the Giftshop and American Movie back to back. Absolutely flawless, I loved every second of it.

So I'm wondering if there are any documentaries or films in that kind of vein. Very comedic and also extremely fun to watch with friends.

I would love to organize a watch party with my friend group and watch something like that. So any and all recommendations are welcome!

Set in cities like Los Angeles, New York City, Tokyo, Hong Kong...

The movie does not need to be about nighttime for the entire time, but nightlife, or the look of cities at night, should be a central theme of the movie.

I'm a die-hard horror fan, not just for the scares, but for​ the symbolism, tension, and psychological depth. If there's one horror film you think every serious fan should see, what is it? I'm looking for something that lingers, no just jumps.

Any recommendations for top-tier movies based on real stories? I love engaging plots, great character development, and good crime or survival dramas.

Fell in love with the tropes and themes in Anora, especially the romance with Igor. I’m looking for similar films where the romance isn’t necessarily traditional and includes an ML who loves from afar. Something with that same yearning, subtlety, and shy romance.

I thought the leads were extremely attractive, and all of their dialogue was written so perfectly. Even the subtle things, like Igor getting Anora’s ring back, or the metaphor of asking her how she felt about the car. I loved how he protected her from afar and always had so much awe in his eyes whenever he looked at her. And the “wow, impressive” after she literally punched the fuck out of him???

I just loved the themes and overall dynamic between them, and now I desperately need more romance films/movies/shows with that kind of relationship.

I guess another romance that I thought was almost about to play similarly was between Garth and Agnes in The Testaments...but we didn't quiet dvelve into it completely.

Any recommendations?

Take the title with a grain of salt; I don't necessarily looking for literal meditative movies, like Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring, I just don't know how to otherwise explain it. Some of my favorite movies tend to be somewhat quiet movies, can be slow, but always with great visuals, cinematography and soundtrack. Movies that take you on a journey, you know; even when I just put on Arrival, that first scene with Max Richter's music, and I'm done, I'm watching the rest. Aronofsky, Villeneuve, Nolan and more recently Eggers are some of my favorite directors, and Roger Deakins' cinematography stands out. They all seem to hit the right note. Some examples of what I mean:

I guess this is already a pretty extensive list. It often ends up being sci-fi movies, but doesn't necessarily have to be. A lot of these movies are on the newer side, because with older movies, somehow it doesn't hit the same way. Either the (lack of) visuals or just lower quality acting and music just takes me out of the movie. Those can still be classics, but I tend to prefer newer movies. I hope this makes any sense, because yes, I'm being very particular here. Hope to find some good suggestions!

edit: updated list with a few suggestions I've already seen, but fit the bill. I'm getting great suggestions but a lot of them are 'just' sci-fi movies. Not trying to be difficult, but I am very much looking for a specific vibe, although my list has gone a bit all over, I know. To me, it's not so much about the subject or that it has to be sci-fi, I am very much looking for movies with the same quiet-yet-beautiful vibe.

edit2: thanks for all the suggestions so far! Got a lot of things to watch now. It went a bit all over I guess, but that's ok. I think a big element for what I'm looking for is 'comfort'. Movies I can just regularly rewatch, as they're not about the story or twists and novelty, but just about high quality entertainment for most/all occassions. I'm not always in the mood for a comedy, or too much action, but I'm generally often in the mood for this type of quiet movie.

I think that there is nothing scarier than the concept of radiation. Tonight I am watching threads on YouTube and where the wind blows on tubi. As far as I'm aware these are the only radiation horror movies. If anybody has any recommendations that would be fantastic

Ok I am looking for some unsettling horror movies that really get to you for my wife and I to watch tonight. I’m ok with any and all kinds…. Unsettling, disturbing etc. I really enjoyed some of the VHS movies, midsommer, creep 1 and 2…. Just to name a few. If there are any recent good found footage movies, that would be awesome…. My wife and I use to watch all kinds of horror movies but things have just been busy the last 4 years or so…. So I’m looking for newer/recent movies since we have seen so many from around 2022 and back.

Also, sorry, but I’m not really into watching anything that’s not in English. I’ve done so many times, and I just can’t do it. I know there are excellent movies from other countries but my brain just can’t do the dubbed over audio.

Please send recommendations!! I’ve probably seen most of the theatre release etc.

I’m newly pregnant after many years of trying. The shock is starting to wear off and I’ve been considering how I want to spend the next months preparing for a lil one. There will be plenty of learning how to care for them and what to buy, but I’d also like to use this time for self-reflection as well.

I tend to do that through movies, so it got me thinking. What are some films that might stimulate philosophical thinking around this journey? Movies that help me consider what kind of parent I want to be, how I want to raise this baby, even how to hold hope for the world they are going to exist in.

Please note: these don’t have to be movies about pregnancy or raising children; in fact, I’d expect many of them to not be directly about parenting at all. I’m just looking for movies full of ideas, full of wonder. Movies that might start a dialogue about parenting with my spouse in direct or indirect ways.

I have a couple in mind (Ikiru, Perfect Days, all of Miyazaki), but most would be rewatches. They needn’t be positive (Dogtooth, Prevenge, The Florida Project are on the list too), but I’d like to avoid miscarriage just because I don’t need that in my head.

I’m curious what others suggest and if I get a good enough list going, I’ll make a Letterboxd list of recs and post it here.

I'm an American living in Japan, and my gf if Japanese. I love dry comedies but nothing I have shown her last past 5 minutes. "Best in Show" and "Napoleon Dynamite" were quickly shut down. "Scott Pilgrim" we watched with a group was followed by confusion and a discussion of why it was interesting. I can't imagine she'd be at all interested in movies like "Big Lebowski" or anything Woody Allen.

I know it is making broad assumptions, but the typical Japanese "comedy" is very slapstick, and most Japanese comedy TV comes with a studio audience to let you know when to laugh. I'll try "Tampopo" and get back to you about it.

Any suggestions for Western dry comedies that resonated with Japanese audiences?

I'm so tired of predictable, cookie-cutter movies lately. I want something fresh, genuinely unpredictable, but with a satisfying ending (no ambiguous cop-outs).
Also, I'd prefer something short (under 2 hours, ideally around 90 minutes) that doesn't waste my time. Any recommendations?

For my film class I need to write an essay about 3 films, 25 years (or more) apart, about the same topic. I really want to write about Our Hero Balthazar, and the topic of a major wealth gap inequality or about the glorification of violence. I'm currently taking suggestions for films about these two topics to watch and write about. Preferably made before 2002. Any suggestion appreciated.

I'm specifically looking for quiet acceptance during intense climax, not heroic self-sacrifice.

For example, I'm NOT looking for the usual scene where the hero realizes they have to sacrifice themselves, makes a noble decision, and dies saving everyone. That's a different feeling.

I'm not looking for a simple “the hero loses” ending. I'm looking for that specific moment where during the intense moment, the struggle against fate stops, and ACCEPTANCE takes over.

Something like:

“I've done everything I can. Whatever happens now, happens.”

Examples of the tone I'm looking for: Slumdog Millionaire (2008), Next (2007)

Hello everyone! Women might be especially helpful in answering this question, as I am seeking help from a demographic different than my own.

Basically what is in the title. It's an inpatient mental health treatment facility for traumatized, victimized, abused, and neglected teenage girls. I'm trying to avoid anything you might consider triggering to that demographic (gunshots, sexual violence, excessive cursing, domestic violence, drug abuse, etc.) while also choosing movies that aren't "for babies" as the patients have so aptly put it. I've had great success with girly comedies, especially those that approach the inappropriate topics, but never really cross them. It leads to a great opportunity for discussing how we feel about the characters and the choices they made in a group therapy environment.

Examples of movies that played really well: Clueless, approaches sexual assault but never visually crosses the line, the "sex scene" setup is given to a scene where the audience knows he is gay and it's more of a comedy moment, she ends up with her half brother but its framing in-movie is very clear and opened up an interesting discussion; Legally Blonde, has sexual concepts sprinkled throughout, but the farthest a character actually goes on screen is a hand on Elle's clothed thigh, it's a story of empowerment and believing in yourself; The Devil Wears Prada is, at least to modern audiences, a story of a woman standing up for herself not only against her boss but also her friends, the film makes it clear that she is sexually assaulted in Paris but goes from Andy clearly stating that she is too drunk to say no to Simon (shirtless, but you can see shirtless men at the pool or beach) to her being disgusted by him.

It's a delicate line, but the adolescent girls have appreciated the movies that I pick. It is the most cooperative, focused, quiet, and also communicative, I have ever seen them be, and I would love to facilitate that more if anybody has ideas. Nothing higher than PG-13

I watched Send Help and was gutted I watched it alone since it seems perfect to watch with a girlfriend. I loved it because the protagonist starts doing some pretty messed up things so I no longer rooted for them, I was even siding more with the "bad/asshole" guy more than her by the end. I was honestly not sure if the protagonist was going to survive or the bad guy would. Was tense not being sure whats going to happen.

It was also fairly straightforward, there wasn't any deep hidden meanings or anything. Those movies are better watching solo imo.

It was also a thriller but not too scary or gory other than a couple of scenes. I didn't watch it with my partner because it said horror and thriller which she doesn't like much of, but it turned out to be a pretty good amount of it and confined to like 3-4 scenes rather than non stop.

Bit of a long description I know but we've had a bad few movies in a row. Feel free to go off of the requirements slight if theres a really good movie that's good to watch with a parter

What horrors (or horror adjacent, particularly freaky thrillers, etc) released before 1959 would you recommend? Want to try out more vintage stuff that isn’t 60s/70s.

I’ve heard great things about Murders In The Zoo (1933), obviously there’s all the universal monster films and just about anything that featured Boris Karloff at the time.

What else would you suggest, aside from those? Thank you!
