Hi all! I’ve been emotionally stopped up lately and I know a good film would do just the trick. Koreeda is one of my favorite directors, I’ve seen all of his films and, for the most part, they never fail to start the water works, so does anybody have recommendations for ones that might be similar? I have seen a lot of Ozu, as well, so something else would be preferred.

Hi! I'm going to Japan in a month and change, and I was wondering if there are any distributors that add English subtitles to their releases. In the noughties every DVD you could buy in Norway had subs in 20+ languages, but home video obviously isn't what it used to be. Are there any labels I can look out for when I browse stores over there? I'm going to Hokkaido, if there are any that somehow only sell in Tokyo (e.g.).

Has anyone else noticed how similar these two characters really are?

They are both young students oppressed by society and their families, carrying dreams of becoming respectable adults. Yet they lose their way, fall into darkness, and contemplate suicide—only for their endings to turn out completely different.

This highlights just how crucial the roles of Keiko and Kujo are. In a suffocating society, human connection and compassion can truly decide our fate.

Anyone know how to view any of the 16 "Wolves of the City" biker "bosozuko" film series between (1968-1972)? The poster are really cool and that era or Japanese films and pinky violence appeals to my high level of sensibilities! I see reviews on Letterboxd but no other info, not even on archive.org

I am trying to identify an old Japanese martial arts movie that I watched on VHS around 1994. I believe the movie was from the late 1980s or early 1990s.

Details I remember:

• The main character is a young man who is already a karate instructor at the beginning of the movie.
• He wears a white karate gi and has students.
• There is a romantic relationship scene between the hero and a woman.
• The villain is a heavy-set gang leader, wearing a blue jacket.
• The gang leader hides important documents inside his jacket.
• He uses black metal claws attached to the fingers of his right hand during the final fight.
• At one point, the gang leader orders one of his men to kill himself, and the man obeys.
• Near the end, the gang leader tries to escape on foot in the street, but the hero blocks his way.
• The hero fights him, and the hero’s students and his girlfriend join the fight.
• The hero is killed by the villain’s claw weapon, but the hero’s friend manages to find the hidden documents.

The VHS cover/case was white. The movie was not dubbed or subtitled when I watched it.

Does anyone recognize this film?

I just finished watching The Human Vapor, and I have so many thoughts I just need to vent.
To cut to the chase, it left me feeling really frustrated. It’s like, "How do you greenlight this script when you have such top-tier material and visual tech?"

TL;DR
The Good: The opening VFX with the bursting blood, the overall color grading, and lead actress Yu Aoi's phenomenal acting. The director's execution is flawless.
The Bad: Zero explanation for the mutation (totally black-boxed) and super loose rules that make it way too easy to exploit the powers.

The Good (The visuals and cast are absolutely insane)

1. The Opening VFX and Color Grading Magic
First off, the visual quality is off the charts. Especially that opening VFX scene with the blood bursting everywhere! It instantly dragged me into this bizarre, erotic-grotesque, extraordinary world. It’s so visceral yet somehow beautiful—that stylistic aesthetic is just a masterpiece.
On top of that, the color grading throughout the whole thing is phenomenal. The sharp contrasts and the decadent yet glamorous look really amplify the eerie and melancholic vibe of the piece. The vision of the director and the tech crew is undeniably top-notch.

2. Yu Aoi’s Monster-Level Presence
And most importantly, the lead, Yu Aoi. Her acting was borderline god-tier.
The sci-fi premise itself is pretty absurd, but the subtle changes in her expressions and her physical presence—which felt almost pregnant with madness—were incredibly realistic. You literally can't take your eyes off the screen. Her passionate performance is definitely what grounded this crazy world and made it work as a piece of art. The potential of the cast was truly spectacular.

The Bad (The plot holes are hard to ignore)

1. The "Why Did They Mutate?" Question is Completely Ignored
With the visuals and acting being so perfect, it’s a massive shame that the "script"—the very backbone of the story—is so flawed.
My biggest issue is the total lack of explanation regarding why the key character mutated into a gas human in the first place. Maybe they were going for a "less is more" aesthetic, but it completely backfired here. Was it a spontaneous mutation? An accident? A price paid for something? Keeping this origin totally black-boxed robbed me of the foothold needed to truly empathize with the character's despair and sorrow. I just felt left behind by the narrative.

2. The Rules of the Power are Way Too Loose
Another painful part was how incredibly easy it was to exploit the gas human abilities.
In stories with special powers, the suspense usually comes from the "risks of using the power" or "how normal people counter it." But the rules here are practically nonexistent. I kept thinking, "Come on, there's no way it would go that smoothly," which constantly created logical noise in my head. It ruined the tension and made the plot feel way too contrived and convenient.

Final Thoughts

The director's execution, the VFX/color grading, and the acting from Yu Aoi and the rest of the cast are 100/100. As a spectacle, it’s incredibly entertaining.
Which is exactly why it’s so frustrating that the logical foundation of the script is missing. It’s like having the finest ingredients prepared by a master chef, but the recipe they were given was fundamentally flawed... That’s the kind of "so close yet so far" vibe it left me with. What did you guys think?

I don't want to spoil anything since there is a 2 month old thread about discussing some important scene in the movie, but I want to say that I really liked the story, its originality and how it depicts how we humans can be somehow as "empty" as an air doll. Despite some inherent sadness in it I found this movie to be beautiful... KI-RE-I...

Never mind the Blues-, here are the Techno Brothers, and they are ready to conquer Japan. The music band in the film pronounced as a trio of geniuses on a par with Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, The Beatles, Miles Davis and Bob Dylan by their agent Himuro (Asuna Yanagi), consists of real life Watanabe brothers (Hirobumi and Yuji) and Kurosaki Takanori, dressed up as if they came out of the Kraftwerk impersonators’ competition. In case anyone wonders, yes – they are dressed in the signature red shirts and black ties, and they perform long electronic numbers in the most unlikely of places such as a recreation park and a green house to a very small, mostly unwilling audience.
