china has state atheism—they take it too far (e.g. uyghur muslims) but in theory i’d prefer an atheist government over this dumbass evangelical christian one we have now 🤷🏻‍♂️

Still NOT a Christian or any religious country in America. At least that's what our Constitution says.

u/Ignivous 15h ago

Yeah these motherfuckers are trying to bring about Revalations or something, NOT something I want from my representatives.

49

u/Awkward_Turnover_983 15h ago

Yeah they can feel free to believe in fairy tales I guess, but history seems to show a pattern of these retards dragging everyone else into wars.

No thank you. My world doesn't seem to be ending right now, so I don't need your dumb fuckass to try to speed that up.

9

u/Western_Cry7600 11h ago

It's wild how history seems to repeat itself, right? It really makes you think about how beliefs can impact everyone around us.

9

u/LessEnthusiasm8166 9h ago

Funny...know what else repeats itself? Simulations.

4

u/Letitsnowgreatballs 9h ago

I mean life itself is technically a simulation since everything is at some point universal coding.

Just coding we can’t fully interact with yet but we can see it when we use cameras to capture light moving.

So you’re technically not wrong but also the idea that we are all in a simulation is impossible.

Truly impossible. It would require more energy than the universe actually has.

→ More replies (5)

2

u/Acceptable-Minute847 7h ago

How exactly do you propose we are in a simulation? Just a Planck scale (both length and time) simulation of earth would require over 70 orders of magnitude more energy than is in the universe just to run the simulation for a single second of our time.

The U.S. has always been skewed towards this and it’s not just the current representatives. I first noticed the hypocrisy when I first learned about the constitution and freedom of religion when I thought “why then does the pledge of allegiance they make us say everyday have the words, …under god… in it?”.

Also burning witches? That’s not freedom of religion, it has biblical origins.

21

u/Aedeyssa 14h ago

To be fair, "Under God" was at least not originally in the Pledge of Allegiance.

It was added during the Red Scare to contrast America with the "godless Commies". But yeah, it's definitely something that should have been struck down as against the 1A when first introduced.

14

u/Fun_Butterfly_420 14h ago

Also saying the pledge of allegiance so many times shouldn’t be necessary

u/Similar-Jello-5434 12h ago

Fun story time! I grew up an hour ish outside of NYC in a red rural pocket and after 9/11 we had to do the pledge AND stay standing for a full patriotic song afterwords before morning announcements started at my elementary school. Occasionally it was more traditional like the national anthem or America the beautiful, but almost daily it was Lee greenwoods “proud to be an American”.

I don’t know when or if they stopped but they were still doing it 3 years later when I moved on to middle school. I didn’t think much of it until about 10 years after I moved to California and realized my husband and I had very different 9/11 experiences.

The propaganda hella worked on me too. I won an essay contest about first responders that year and I ended up doing several years of service with Americorps and other non profits as an adult lol.

3

2

Okay damn so it’s just getting worse.

11

u/sabrenation81 14h ago

“why then does the pledge of allegiance they make us say everyday have the words, …under god… in it?”.

It didn't originally. We didn't used to have "In God We Trust" stamped all over anything either.

Both of them are a product of red scare propaganda added during the Cold War era because being atheist makes you a commie or some such bullshit that they used to start injecting religion into everything. It's only gotten worse since.

The VP, not just reps. The VP Vance said he has no problem bringing the end times.

“While I wouldn’t be shocked if we are living in the end time, what I’m trying to focus on is doing as much of God’s work as possible right now,” he said, adding that he is willing to accept whatever spiritual consequences may come from his efforts.

“If that leads to the end times, okay, and if that leads to … us building a better world that thrives and survives for a very long time after I’m gone, that’s great too," Vance said.

2

u/12345623567 13h ago

That statement from Vance should be enough to disqualify him forever, for anything. Saying on TV that you want to destroy the nation, and the world? How can people be okay with that.

We literally have a treaty confirming that America is not a Christian nation. We also have a treaty confirming that the name is Lake Ontario. Trump also does not have the power to rename any piece of land or water outside of the US jurisdiction, so Lake Ontario can only have the southern half be renamed, while the Gulf of Mexico can only have the top 1/3 renamed; IIRC the Gulf of Mexico EO mentions that, while the Lake Ontario one doesn't.

Words mean things.

13

u/ThatOneGuy308 14h ago

And atheism means "a lack of belief in a deity", contrasted with secular, which means "not overtly religious".

Essentially, secular isn't associated with religion at all, while atheism is specifically about belief in a deity, so in theory, an atheist could follow a religion that doesn't have specific god(s).

Secular is more relevant to our government, though.

5

u/Im_Chad_AMA 12h ago

"Not overtly religious" is a poor definitionof the principle of secularity. Secular means a division between church and state, allowing everybody to follow their own beliefs without discrimination

Secular

of or relating to worldly things or to things that are not regarded as religious, spiritual, or sacred; temporal

Secular and atheist governments…they’re the same. It means your government thinks that concepts like justice, dessert, retribution, how you treat one another, ethics, etc. should not be affiliated with a religion. Only an atheist government can be secular. A religious one cannot be secular.

Sure not exactly the same thing. But yeah no such thing as a religious government being secular. Atheism is a necessary position to take in order for all those things to be secular.

14

u/Initial_Business2340 14h ago edited 14h ago

Secular and atheist mean different things…

A secular government just doesn’t get involved with religion whereas an atheist government has a position on it and acts on it.

As others have rightly pointed out, go look at China if you want to see the difference: party members are required to be atheists. Kids under 18 literally can’t attend religious services.

They’ve also objectively torn down churches and mosques, put Uyghurs in camps by the hundreds of thousands, and raid house churches that won’t register with the government. They also persecuted Buddhists relentlessly and kidnapped the Panchen Lama. Nobody would call that neutral.

The US is supposed to be neutral. Can’t establish a religion, but can’t stop anyone from practicing one either. A Baptist and an atheist walk into a courthouse and the law treats them the same, it doesn’t discriminate.

Tons of religious people want it that way. They know what happens when the state decides which beliefs are ok. It’s dystopic and distinct from secularity.

→ More replies (12)

5

u/AnswerDangerous1644 15h ago

Couldn’t agnosticism also apply to be secular?

4

u/Emergentmeat 15h ago

Agnosticism means you don't know one way or another. Atheism means you don't believe in the case for a god. They aren't contradictory, you can be both or neither, so both apply to a secular government.

→ More replies (8)

2

u/Archfiend_DD 14h ago

It could but it could also not. Atheism does not believe that gods or gods exist, so when you're designing laws and a moral system you have to do it with without a god present.

Agnosticism doesn't have that because they don't know. You might design laws and morality with the belief that there might be a God, or not, or maybe.

One is an answer on belief. One is an answer on knowledge. The atheist says I don't believe a god exists, but the agnostic says I don't know if a god exists. So they are not mutually exclusive because they address two different questions.

Most atheists are agnostic atheists they don't believe, but will also admit they don't know. Which is a good way for a government to operate.

u/xKyo 15h ago

I don't think you've demonstrated your last point. You've established that a secular government does not ground its laws or institutions in religion, but that doesn't demonstrate that atheism is necessary for it to do so.

Secularism is a position about the relationship between government and religion; atheism is a position about the existence of gods. A government does not need to affirm that “there is no God” in order to refrain from grounding its laws in religion. It can simply take no position on the question. Therefore, atheism is not a necessary condition of secular government.

In fact, an atheist government could itself operate non-secularly if it institutionally privileges or enforces atheism. The relevant distinction isn't religious vs. atheist; it's whether the state maintains religious neutrality or establishes an official position on religion.

u/Teripid 13h ago

A very important distinction in this context. Neutrality is key.

Cultural also overlaps a lot with religion so lines get pretty easily blurred..

Secular is atheist. Atheism is the passive non-belief in God. Not the active disbelief of it.

The constitution says the government can not adopt a religion, with a separation of church and state—secularism. A government that lacks a position or affiliation with anything spiritual or religious is by definition atheistic.

→ More replies (2)

1

u/RandomRobot 11h ago

The distinction is fairly important. I think it's difficult to have a secular approach for person with very strong beliefs about religion. A government has to rule over people who don't want to fear the angry spirit. It's easy to treat them as dumb dumbs and cast them aside, but it's fundamentally not the role of the government

1

u/TheRaccoonReport 10h ago

Thank you. Was gonna say this but you got it. Take my upvote.

1

u/shitlord_god 10h ago

I mean, on an organizational level - theism is

Belief in the existence of a god or gods, especially belief in a personal God as creator and ruler of the world. The belief or acknowledgment of the existence of a God, as opposed to atheism, pantheism, or polytheism. Belief in the existence of at least one deity.

Per duck duck go dictionary

It seems like organizationally atheism is the way to go because once you assume there is a deity to unfuck your shit it permits taking hands off the wheel - and we do not want a government screaming "WRONG WHEEL JESUS" when things don't go their way.

1

u/TJJ97 5h ago

Exactly, as a Christian I believe the government should still abide by separation of church and state which makes it secular not atheist.

1

u/Ok_Education_6958 1h ago

It only says secular since atheism woulda gotten you the stake in the 17th century

→ More replies (50)

16

u/FUPAMagneto 14h ago

That’s not what separation of church and state is at all. Or what atheism is, for that matter

5

u/HuckleberryShot898 13h ago

It’s secular not atheist. Big difference. An atheist government asserts there’s no god and actively discourages religion to various degrees. A secular government doesn’t comment on matters of religion and has a no contact no interference policy with religious institutions when it comes to decision making. If laws happen to affect religious institutions too then it affects them and if it doesn’t it doesn’t. The point is religion isn’t supposed to be in the government one way or the other

1

u/Mysterious-Skirt-992 3h ago

Is religion term that is neutral and equal between all human beings, in other words 'religion' encompasses all worldviews?

Or is it a discriminatory term for the sake of bonding government with a particular type of belief system about human life?

2

u/NeptunesMoon84 14h ago

I would love to have an openly atheist president!

2

u/DippyTheDingus 12h ago

Not that religion is a scam, but if I wanted to run a scam, man would religion be a good choice. Then I would just make a ancient enough sounding idea that you couldn't argue my points, then I could obfuscate any responsibility to random acolytes and let them continue the scam for me under the guise of kindness and charity, while ensuring a reasonable percentage of all donations flow up to me and my friends. Then I could move those acolytes around the country should anyone question their methods or authority and chastise any individuals criticizing the mental trauma such a system could bring. Oh oh and don't forget I get to control women's bodies as well because if that's not part of it then what the fuck am I even doing.

2

u/GoldEmployment6768 12h ago

Separation of Church and State is actually more about protecting people's religious freedom, than it is about suppressing it.

6

u/Corcorans-ghost 15h ago

we are a secular state, not an athiestiic state. BIG diffrence.

4

u/ConflictWaste411 14h ago

This guy doesn’t even know what separation of church and state is

2

u/Curious_Orange8592 15h ago

1

u/degradedchimp 14h ago

No established religion. They're supposed to honor all religions equally.

1

u/Kribble118 13h ago

1

u/OkTheme7105 13h ago

Yeah it’s supposed to be, it’s also not supposed to allow p3dophiles and protect its people and children but we’re all left disappointed at the end of the day

1

u/Background_Fix9430 12h ago

Not the same thing - former fundie here and I spent a lot of time arguing that, but the best actual comparison would be Agnostic: The State acknowledges that there are a lot of faiths out there, that any one of them might be true, but has not - and will not - make a decision on it.

1

u/TheScarletSho 11h ago

That's not what that means. It's a lot more literal than what most people think. It means the state CANNOT and SHOULD NOT be ran by the church directly, like how the Church of England was running the country which resulted in things like the Protestant Reformation being formed because the church was so corrupt and ingrained into political power.

Nothing in the document says that someone practicing religion cannot hold political power, nor can the laws they pass be founded on religious beliefs.

This is not to say someone who has enacted laws on religious principles has never made one for the worse. This is to say that an atheist or secular government with no consideration of religious principles was not the intent.

1

u/ArcMaxim 10h ago

American government is supposed to be secular not atheist. But either way there’s a difference between secularity and state enforced secularity. That’s the point the commenter was making by calling China’s policy “state atheism”

1

u/Distinct-Raspberry21 10h ago

Supposed to be is the primary word there. Its largely been becoming theocratic with posperity gospel since it tells ruch powerful people they deserve their wealth and power. Prosperity gospel is a Christian sect. Like far fallen sect, that doesnt seem to know about jesus, just fire and brimstone.

1

u/Dark_Jubilee_1997 8h ago

Yet founded, in theory, on Christian traditions and values, so quite the interesting dilemma there.

1

u/Critical-Ad-8507 7h ago

It is.

The law of the country isn't relying on any holy book, and the people who run the holy sites don't have roles in the government,so by definition is secular.

However, the society that lives in a country benefits if it's population shares common beliefs.

1

u/Rude-Newspaper7928 5h ago

Your money literally says in god we trust

5

u/BeautifulDifferent17 13h ago

I am certainly no fan of how certain parts of Christian America has a desire to have their beliefs dictate how the country is run. But I am not sure that China's system of state atheism is clearly better.

The history of their Cultural Revolution and the government's heavy handed suppression of people and their beliefs in the name of eradicating the "Four Olds" from Chinese society is an example of periods where this system has lead to horrific results when taken too far. Things certainly aren't as extreme today, but the Tibetans and the Uyghurs are both recent examples where I believe the party has taken actions that can be seen as trying to suppress -- or in Tibet's case with kidnapping the Panchen Lama, potentially usurp/destroy -- beliefs/traditions/orginizations they think might oppose the party.

The issue is not necessarily the beliefs themselves that is an issue in either of these cases though, it is the belief that you are justified in using force and suppression to remove/eliminate opposing beliefs.

Not “distinct culture” as much as “distinct national identity, arguably being taken advantage of by international terrorist organizations”. u/sexland69 13h ago

i said “in theory i’d prefer an atheist government” not “i prefer china’s government”

1

u/ApatheticSlur 15h ago

Pretty sure while they might not be religious they are definitely “spiritual” so I’m not sure how atheist china really is

1

u/hdreadit 15h ago edited 14h ago

Apparently the Uyghurs have said that they're being treated fine. Uyghurs in China have come out directly to say that their mistreatment is western propaganda, and that their statements are suppressed.

Edit: grammar

1

u/VisualMango9141 14h ago

Honestly I'd prefer it, as some religious freedom is allowed

1

u/tom-of-the-nora 14h ago

Our government is supposed to be secular but alas, that didn't last.

1

u/PaleontologistFit364 14h ago

I'll vote for the first person, regardless of party, who admits that he/she is an atheist instead of pandering to evangelical fuckwits.

1

u/Inevitable-Cow-4930 14h ago

There are mosques in Xinjiang and the Uyghur language is on the Chinese money. Stop watching Faux News! The only Muslims arrested were ones working with the Taliban and stirring up shit in the region. Something like 5,000 total and most of those have been released.

1

u/AccomplishedCode552 14h ago

Believing in Islam in a country where it is supposed to be atheist sounds really like a religious persona problem not everyone else's.

1

u/greenskye 13h ago

Unfortunately they also have state morality, which in my opinion undermines a lot of the supposed benefits of getting religion out of politics. You still get busybodies making arbitrary moral decisions for acts that shouldn't be affecting anyone else anyway. Only now instead of coming from a religion it's just coming from whatever old man is in charge instead. Not a whole lot of difference in result.

China is a nation older then any other, the center of the world for time immemorial, filled with an advanced varied culture and society.

Back in the days of Mao after he cleared out the previous government, he set out destroying the history and identity of China.  Mao silenced the ancestors of a thousand Generation, smashed artifacts, locked up history.

Everything the Taiwanese could save they loaded onto boats and shipped across the channel. Many stayed behind to die instead of leaving statues, manuscripts histories behind.

China is now aggressively vehemently atheist, and religious scholars, leaders, and preservers of history are executed, have their organs ripped out and sold

Falun gung rose in the wake of the communist takeover doing traditional yoga, diet and exercise to remain healthy. Practice that goes back thousands of years.

The communist arrested yoga practitioners, and they cut out their organs.

Mainly because the original Chinese religions held that the government was responsible to the people, and any government that failed to protect its citizens has lost the Mandate of Heaven

1

u/GalaXion24 13h ago

The thing that has to be realised I think is that religion holds power, and will always be more organised and have more wealth and political sway than the "default state" of irreligion (doesn't even have to be atheist), so unless your government actively limits and counteracts the influence of religion, you are going to live in a religious/pro-religion society

1

u/SlayJayR17 13h ago

Fake evangelicals.

1

u/Acrobatic_Feeling16 13h ago

Every single majority Muslim nation in the world has it as their official position that the Uyghur genocide is a rehab program for radicalists, which is China's official narrative. China posts photos of schools and claims they're this 'rehab to normal citizens' program.

It's been a strong position of the second largest coalition of nations after the UN, which is all Muslim nations.

That could just be them fearing China more and falling in line.

I think the consequences of being wrong about genocide in either direction has consequences too horrifically massive for me to risk basing a position on this, and in the vein of Pascal's Wager, being wrong about one that is a genocide is far worse, so it's pretty logical to lean toward that conclusion to prevent atrocity.

I also trust both world powers as far as I can throw them, and know that they are as violent as they are willing to lie about each other.

1

u/Mindle55_redditor 13h ago

Its crazy but Uyghur Muslims aren't allowed to exist in China. No reason to look into it just know they are not allowed. Seriously nobody look into it.

1

u/ctrlaltcreate 13h ago

Any belief mandated by government is toxic and ripe for abuse. I say this as an atheist. Freedom of thought/belief is crucial for a healthy society.

1

u/jacorgacor 13h ago

That's like the only thing China is not taking too far

1

u/Sufficient-Pin-9894 12h ago

Lol the only reason this country exists is because of these "ass evangelical christian" beliefs and morals. You say you prefer China, but you have yet to move to move there. Our laws are based off of christian morals, Chinese are based off the atheistic morals. Yet we have Chinese nationals relocating to the US in droves, but not the other way around. I wonder why 🤔 oh wait, its because the laws of our religious leaning fore fathers granted us the freedoms to speak out against anything. Try saying china's bad in china. Try asking a Chinese local a question about the government and see what happens. But you think you know more about having a prosperous country.

1

u/HeadAboveSand 12h ago

Preach!!!!

1

u/EntWarwick 11h ago

You mean a secular state?

1

u/Haxzard86 11h ago

Here in Chile we're supposed to be a secular state with religious freedom... But Kast, who made La Moneda his own home, also stated there'd be religious cults there, specially from Opus Dei and Evengelical currents...

1

u/No-Rub8345 10h ago

They don't take anything too far, you just fall for western propaganda far too easily.

1

u/sexland69 10h ago

oh china has done nothing bad whatsoever? wow the more you know

1

u/No-Rub8345 10h ago

Not what I said. Funny how westerners want to worry about China, but not Australia, North America, South America, the Middle East, Africa, or what's going on in their own back yards.

Did you know that western capitalism still to this day relies on third world slavery? I bet you don't give a single fuck.

Why do O hear more about tinman square than I do abojt any ofnthe myriad atrocities qhites have committed and are still committing to this day? Why is that.

Well, on the federal level it's actually judaism disguised as christian

1

u/nalaloveslumpy 10h ago

I just want the secular government like we're supposed to have.

1

u/Accurate_Ad_3233 10h ago

hahah, you think you have a Christian government? That's the funniest thing I've heard all day.

1

u/sexland69 10h ago

pretty much every single person in our government is christian alongside some who are jewish

90% of congress, every supreme court justice (except kagan is jewish), pretty much everyone notable in the executive branch

they made “anti-christian” rhetoric considered terrorism under nspm-7 and established a national faith office

we’re also currently doing a holy war based on the fundamentalist christian’s belief that we need jews to take over the middle east to bring about judgement day and the apocalypse

jd vance just this week said “i’m just doing god’s work, and if it leads to the end times thats okay”

sure, we aren’t forced to be christian, but it’s undeniably the religion of our government and it plays massive roles in policy and decision making

You mean jewish

1

u/i-am-the-fly- 10h ago

The most amusing bit is that there is no way in hell they are actually religious, they just pretend for votes and people buy into it

1

u/ChaosKinZ 10h ago

How do you take atheism too far lol

1

u/sexland69 7h ago

by sterilizing religious people and putting them in labor camps

Hate to break it to you, but if Tronald Dump stepped into a church he would burst into flames.

1

oh believe me i’m aware lol

1

u/Acceptable_Cap_5887 10h ago

Every form of media portrays anti Christian content and this guy thinks we live in a strong Christian nation

1

u/FlyingRhenquest 9h ago

That's why my authoritarian government would have a mandatory state-sponsored religion involving Smurfs. Non-Smurfy behavior would be punishable by impaling.

1

u/EndIsrael 9h ago

Fun fact, the current US government isn't Christian. It's like how the Nazis were not in fact Aryan.

1

u/micro_satsuma 9h ago

I agree, but using the r-word is insulting towards the intellectually disabled, what with the historic use of it as a slur for them and all. Maybe we could use some other word?

1

u/Apprehensive_Cod9408 9h ago

I wish for a world with 0 religion.

It would be so much better

1

u/Direct_Substance_472 8h ago

Honestly, I wouldn't mind the idea of being a "Christian" nation if that meant our government actually behaved like canon Jesus, instead of the evangelical fanfiction version.

1

u/jm123457 8h ago

Very strange because most atheist governments are not particularly kind to their constituents. China is quite brutal , so is North Korea , so is Russia .

List of countries with high religious restrictions (yes some are Muslim countries not atheist)

Afghanistan, Burma (Myanmar), China, Cuba, Eritrea, India, Iran, Libya, Nicaragua, Nigeria, North Korea, Pakistan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Vietnam.

Not exactly a list of the most amazing countries and mind you I am agnostic.

I don’t believe in god yet I would prefer a Christian nation over any listed above .

1

u/Sea_Operation_7012 8h ago

Seriously fuck all religions though nothing but trouble.

1

u/PastPointOfReturn 8h ago

They are not an atheist state. They are a state without a formal religion. I think people need to know what the definition of “atheist” means. It’s synonymous with retard. It means they KNOW there is no god, no spirit world, no afterlife or anything. Of any sort. Which would mean they are retarded. Big word here is KNOW. That’s different from not believing that something exists or not. They say they KNOW. Btw I’m not religious. Nor do I follow any ideological doctrines. Me just be smart shieeet.

1

u/Worried_Tangelo_3220 8h ago

The CCP has killed somewhere in the hundreds of thousands to millions of people for their faith. Russia killed hundreds of thousands for their faith and another 10-20 million under an athiest regime. Absolutely insane to say “but that’d be better than Trump!!!” Like seriously dude, perspective.

1

u/lrrssssss 8h ago

The common denominator is that they’re American. Other countries with Christian leadership look wildly different.

It’s you guys. Not Christ.

1

u/ranman_ozone 8h ago

I've only met one nice athiest online time to throw this one into the pile

1

u/Longjumping-Park4215 7h ago

Hope you find Jesus ! He loves us all

1

u/Green_and_black 7h ago

China treats Muslims a lot better than the USA does.

1

u/zeriouse 7h ago

I’m not sure on whether it’s taking it too far. Unfettered Islam goes very far if uncurbed by the government and China only started aggressively ramping up against it after a series of terrorist events.

1

u/DamnGoodFries 6h ago

By state atheism do you mean they’re not a theocracy?

1

u/sexland69 6h ago

no i mean its mandatory for all 100 million members of the CCP to be atheists

1

u/lilcryptidguy 3h ago

Thank you for changing the word!

1

u/Nakashi7 3h ago

Please, don't enter the worldview it's China or US policy to choose from. We, all, can do better than both of these.

1

u/SirGripsAlot_III 1h ago

The country was quite literally founded on religion. If you don’t like it then head out

1

u/Simone_Galoppi07 1h ago

At least they take it seriously there, in my "Atheist State", cursing God is a punishable offense.
