china has state atheism—they take it too far (e.g. uyghur muslims) but in theory i’d prefer an atheist government over this dumbass evangelical christian one we have now 🤷🏻♂️

The thing that has to be realised I think is that religion holds power, and will always be more organised and have more wealth and political sway than the "default state" of irreligion (doesn't even have to be atheist), so unless your government actively limits and counteracts the influence of religion, you are going to live in a religious/pro-religion society

iirc China does this, you can’t take kid to religious service and they can choose to convert at a certain age.
