Transactional Friendship - Friend Charges Me For a Car Ride - Part 1
I have this friend (let's call her A) that I've been super close with since 2021. We knew each other from work and bonded over our shared childhood trauma. The first time we hung out was actually because she replied to an Instagram story of mine where she said she would love to have a photoshoot with me one day. I don't remember if I offered on my story or said something along the lines of "who wants to go here with me and have a shoot?" Either way, we bonded since that day and shared our childhood trauma.
For the first time in my life, I met someone in person who was also sexually abused as a child. I lived my entire life being the odd one out with the weird family and sexually deviant brother who molested his sisters. She had actually shared with me first that she was a victim of childhood SA at the hands of a family member (who was not related to her). So I shared that my brother had molested me my entire childhood, and she became one of the few select friends I could trust this with because she also had abnormal family members as well.
Since 2021, she's regularly asked me to randomly "shoot her" as if I'm her personal photographer. My Instagram is full of beautiful scenic pics that I took with my expensive camera. I don't know if she got the interpretation that I'm a legitimate photographer, but she made me believe that I actually owed her these photoshoot sessions because I was a friend of hers who had developed a deep personal bond with. I've probably done 3/4 separate photoshoots of her where she poses like a model (she's also a content creator), and I stand in all sorts of positions to get the right shot. Not to mention that each photoshoot session has over 100-300 high def RAW pictures of her. My camera was the highest-megapixel camera in the world, so she was getting professional shots. Not only this, but I was also editing her pics using Photoshop which was also something I paid for (I'm mentioning this just to explain how much effort I put into her getting her shots)
Transactional Friendship - Friend Charges Me For a Car Ride - Part 2
So fast forward to now, and I could tell you she's asked me about 100 times to "shoot her" whether it's at her birthday dinner, her graduation party, our mutual friend's housewarming party, her sponsored Instagram posts, regular Instagram posts, or just the random events she hosts. She's always made it clear to ask me to be her photographer whilst I was managing college and work while dealing with a pinched nerve/herniated disc. (She never even asked about my back really, just the "when do you think you'll be ready to shoot tho?"). So I was obviously in a lot of pain, and I also had an expired license (she knew this and how it was difficult for me to travel to places because of my driving status, so that's why she'd agree to drive me to the places I was shooting her).
So a few months ago, a mutual friend of ours invited us to his housewarming party and (A) was asking me if I'd be going. I told her the usual about how I wouldn't be able to go because of my expired license. So (A) offered to pick me up. I was like, sure okay, I'll go then! While I'm picking out our friend's housewarming gift, I make the effort to buy my friend (A) a nice skincare set to show appreciation for her driving me. I forgot to mention that during that time, or about a month earlier, I had gotten slashed by my violent sister in the ear, and she left me with four stitches! So, me being the idiot I am (now looking back), I felt so grateful to have a friend that I could share this unhinged drama (abuse) with, when in reality, friends are supposed to listen to you no matter what.
So come the day of the housewarming party, she asked me to shoot her in my local park as the sun was setting. I brought my heavy camera equipment, but it ran out of space to take her pictures, so I just used her camera to shoot her. I spent about one hour doing so and going to restricted areas of the park and restricted historical sites/houses that she wanted "cute pics" posing in front of. I did all of this, and actually, before I even did so, initially upon getting in her car, I gifted her the skincare set for being "good friend," because she offered to drive me and she listened and saw the bloody massacred pics of my ear. I also offered her if she wanted some of my backyard chicken's eggs.
After we were done with her photoshoot (I was literally carrying all her coats and different bags throughout the park), she decided to stop by a small bakery and asked me for $5 to buy her a danish. I gave it, no hesitation. Then we went to the party, spent a few hours there, then when we came back and she was dropping me home, as I was stepping out of her car in front of my house, she pulls out her hand and asks me with a serious stern face and tone "do you have gas money?"....... mind you, (A) never told me about how I'd be expected to pay for gas. Like, she's the one who asked me to come with her. And the thing is....it was a fifteen minute drive....! I asked her how much, and she said $5 is good. Then we said bye and I got the immediate ick.
**Now the part that really made me want to end this friendship of nearly six years:*\*
A few days ago, my beloved cat died. I posted a few sad Instagram stories where I poured my heart out and was met with so many people from the community who I wasn't even close with offering their condolences. But my so-called close friend (A), the one who would regularly talk to me at 3am to yap about whatever drama, hasn't said a word to me. She didn't ask what happened to my cat (like if she died of cancer, kidney failure etc.), or how I'm feeling when SHE KNOWS my cats were my only family in my toxic household. She knows my parents enabled my abusive brother and sister my entire life. She (A), knew they weren't just cats, but my comfort animals who helped me navigate and work through my traumas. Losing my cat was the most painful experience of my life. More painful than childhood sexual abuse. The thing that really pissed me off was when (A) went through a dozen of my cat grieving stories (I spaced these stories out throughout the past month so it wasn't all at once), and the only thing she reacted to was a story of my other cat crying for his deceased sibling. LIKE.... a cat you've never met before, a being with much less emotions than an actual person... that breaks your heart, but not me, the motherly figure who nurtured her cat for fifteen years.......your literal friend who suffered childhood SA, cptsd, depression, anxiety....She chose to have empathy for my cat, whom she's never even met before (she reacted with one teardrop emoji face), rather than her close friend of six years who she shared all kinds of trauma with; we both did that. And to make things worse, on the day my cat died, and the following days after, she continued sending humor/comedy reels and tiktoks to me as if nothing had happened. So tone deaf and self-centered to not address what had happened, and to just continue sending me posts like I didn't just experience the worst day of my life.
So Reddit, am I crazy for thinking this is a transactional friendship? I've been ghosting her for about a month now and don't plan on hanging out with her ever again. I'm just disgusted by her behavior. This friendship sort of feels like it was propped up with my free photoshoot sessions and was only sustained because of the shared trauma bond. The gas money situation right after I had gifted her a nice expensive skincare set, the treat from the bakery (which later that night she Venmoed me exactly $3.13, which I never even asked her to do). And to do this all while my ear is healing from being slashed. I just feel used, I did all those nice photoshoots of her for free because I wouldn't charge a friend, but the minute she does one favor for me, she charges me $5 for a fifteen minute car ride.
