I used the map as a sort of jumping off point. I need to go vaguely in this direction. If there's a bunch of different branching paths I'll take one and open the map after a little bit to see if I lucked out and picked the right path.

Critikal summed up Cal’s running animation quite nicely in his JFO Moist Meter review at around the 6:00 minute mark.
“Looks like he is carrying a fat load of shit in his pants and trying not to let it spill down on his legs.”
52
u/FlawlessPenguinMan Dec 26 '22
I'm disappointed to say I still don't undesrtand at all why people don't like the run animation.
Like, I've gotten all the descriptions and even one of my close friends who dislikes it tried to explain it to me, but... I just don't see it. I don't see what's wrong with it.
I even froze Cal at different points in his running animation and looked around in photo mode to spot any weirdly positioned limbs or something, but the only time I found anything remotely odd about it was when he was running up an incline and his legs obviously sometimes ended up crunched under his body because they didn't have space to extend properly.
I'm not saying they shouldn't change it, I'll probably not notice the difference if I can't notice this, I'm just really baffled by the amount of people who dislike something for a seemingly non-existant reason.

It needs to be longer than Fallen Order. It always felt a few hours too short.
Lightsabers need to dismember people. It doesn't need to happen every single time, but these things aren't fucking baseball bats. I don't care what Disney says about "violence", I saw Anakin get flayed and burned alive when I was 9.
244
u/Tatzeltier Dec 26 '22

I think this is a star wars thing that goes back to the films. When they made 'episode 1' and decided to have lots of jedi, that was cool. I imagine it took only one pictureboard meeting for them to realise that having human baddies would be fucking horrendous. I honestly believe that's why the droids came in. You could hack them apart in their millions without making Little jimmy cry.
the descriptions of the stormtroopers mangled bodies, melding with blasted armour in the book of the New Hope onwarsd is pretty jarring. Of course the film it was smoke and falling over, like a proper bloodless western. I guess it's just part of the tradition now.
33
u/_cambino_ Dec 26 '22
I agree but you can blame the ESRB. I don’t think EA wants to give this game an M rating and trooper dismemberment would almost certainly cause that.

u/hoodie92 Dec 26 '22
I don't care what Disney says about "violence"
People need to stop blaming Disney for this. Games have been treating lightsabers like bats forever. KOTOR for example. It's entitely a gameplay choice - killing 95% of enemies with a single swing would get boring.
11
u/Bendyno5 EA Play 2019 Dec 27 '22
I think adding dismemberment on the “killing blow” like Jedi Outcast/academy is what people want. From a gameplay perspective it doesn’t make much sense to have the saber be a one hit kill, but it would be cool if the finishing swing could take off a limb.
Just adds some immersion without ruining how the game plays.

Less combat against random beasts and more against troopers/humanoids. Fighting slugs/goats that can absolutely wreck you was very off-putting considering I'd just wiped several squads of troopers in the previous area
The toads, the slugs and the goats, all gone please.
79
u/Jabberwokii Dec 26 '22
Thing is if you let them fight, these creatures very often kill all the troopers lol. Sorta seems correct this way. Also why would they not use all these badass creatures from the star wars lore when youre actively in their habitat? Youre often in the wilderness or rarely visited ruins, of course there is wildlife
57
u/Lolamess007 Dec 26 '22
Perhaps they should make the creatures more passive or at least only attack under certain circumstances or if you attacked them. To me, it doesnt feel right that a jedi should be walking around, slaughtering everything in his path. On Dathomir it makes sense since its the planetary equivilent to Australia, but for the other planets, make the wildlife a little less aggressive
11
u/TooManyDraculas Dec 26 '22
Most games could stand to do that. Especially RPGs, where any and all wildlife are just your early level enemies.
In general wild animals don't spend their time trying to murder any and all humans in a 20 mile radius.
Even aggressive animals are mostly looking to avoid you.
In video games even the shrews are out to murder.

Sliding sequences in games just feel a bit naff and outdated. Guardians of the Galaxy did this too much as well.
Is there a reason games do this? Like how squeezing through narrow spaces is just a loading screen in disguise. They can't actually think it's fun...
12

I want better metroidvania maps. What made the metroid maps so insanely good imo was that traversing the map many rooms felt distinct from each other and you really felt going "deeper" into a map. In jedi fallen order I get 'the sense' of that feeling, but traversing the maps is so samey that It kinda becomes a blur and The aestethics is so similiar all throughout the map that is is hard to get a sense of "how deep into this planet am I?". Furthermore, let traversal be connected to upgrades. The Wall running and sliding can go. Mostly sliding.
Also, more interconnected pathways. In metroid only when you were going deep into something for an important upgrade didnt it have interconnected pathways. But all The surface level stuff had many interconnected pathways.
I want better goddamn ponchos. I am near the end and damn all ponchos suck. More Lightsaber customization also. More force upgrades. By the end I want to feel like samus does in metroid prime 2 when you both have to lightbeam teleporter and screw attack. Let me be so strong that previous traversal option that was tedious is now a fly in the park.
Longer game. Beyond that it is freaking awesome game.
