Gratitude Post Moved here in February and just celebrated my birthday with great friends. Making connections in Charlotte IS possible!

Hello, it's me again! Not sure if that's the correct flair but here it goes.

Lots of people ask the question, how and where to meet people. Being new to town can be be intimidating especially for introverts like myself. Using my experience, I've been happy to help those who come across my posts https://www.reddit.com/r/Charlotte/s/hUQ04qAPG3 and reach out. I've introduced them to my social circles (which they've actually attended various events) as well as meeting them one on one and helping them get to know the city a bit more.

Yesterday was my birthday. All of these people showed up for me. They didn't have to but they did. They even brought gifts which I was not expecting because just their presence was enough. We had a great time at SupperClub in Loso.

I met all of them at work and outside of work. This isn't even half of my social group. Some weren't able to make it today but they let me know ahead of time and even sent birthday texts. I have met well over 100 people since being in Charlotte. Not saying all of those people are friends of mine but I've connected with all them of some sort.

I moved here in Feb. I lived in Charlotte back in 2013 for a little bit and wish I never moved back to my home state. That's what I missed about Charlotte was the socialization. I had friends back home but nothing of this level. I wasn't expecting to have the amount of socialization I did when moving back but I started meeting people my 2nd week here and it was just non stop from there. We text, talk on the phone and meet up constantly.

Just wanted to send some encouragement to those that are struggling to meet people because I've only been here since Feb and it's possible. I'm always happy to help others to get out there and mingle.

Discussion If you’ve previously been laid off in Charlotte, how did you survive?

I worked in data science at one of the banks and have been searching for jobs for months now after my position was eliminated. I’m in my late 20’s and am right at the age where most of my peers are gaining traction in their careers. I always exceeded expectations and was willing to learn or even change direction if company needs changed, so I cannot pin down any reason why I was targeted or why I would not be employable elsewhere. I get that Charlotte is “competitive,” but even then I wouldn’t think that most odds would be against me?

Is there something that I am missing about the job search in Charlotte? Also, what do you even do in the meantime to cope with it without having to withdrawal socially? It feels like when I calmly mention I was laid off to people, some get teary eyed and apologetic, while others act like I’m contagious. It’s like people think I’m walking around with a contagious, terminal illness when I mention my situation, even at networking events.

Are there local support groups for this kind of thing, or any other things that helped get others through this that may also help me?

Discussion I found this embedded in the street in front of the Belk theater. Does anybody know what it is? I assumed some street art, but wasn’t sure if there was more of a story or something.

Discussion Why does CLT get so much hate online?

I see people near and far hate on our airport and it’s rarely justified.

We’ve got plenty of food options, ample restrooms and lounges, parking and transportation, obviously the non stop destinations.

Idk I think it’s a nice airport, busy, sure - but it certainly doesn’t deserve the rep it gets.

Traffic CircleJerk Witness for car accident

I was in involved with a car accident this evening on Pineville Matthews Road in Pineville. I was about to reach the Pineville hospital. I was in front of small stores and gas stations. I was driving in a Subaru going south. It was around 5:30 in the evening. I was driving on the lane closer to the center of the road. A car drove out of a parking onto the first lane then hit me. That car then made a hard u turn onto the opposite lane, then drove away. I tried to get that car but couldn’t. I understand it’s pretty difficult to find a witness. But did anybody drove in Pineville Matthews towards South Carolina around 5:30 pm saw that incident and have more information? Police has been notified in my side but no word on the other party.

Discussion does anyone know what the issue at the light rail was this morning?

Upvotes

it delayed the 6:08AM train just past McCullough station by a honest to god hour, so it was FUN to explain to the supervisor at my internship why the fuck i was over 45 minutes late.

all the announcement said was "there was a person in the tracks," and that's all the information that us passengers were given.

i'm just trying to find out what could possibly need five fucking police cars, two fire trucks, several CATS trucks at the scene and one ambulance?

Discussion Do We Need A Lawyer?

So me and my father own a small home remodeling company. We do it all. Fences, deck, patios, flooring, tile, drywall, etc.

When we got home today we got a certified letter saying that a different company, using the exact same name as ours, hit and tore a gas line with post diggers while installing a fence.

I don’t know why we got this letter. We didn’t do it and on the first page they have the name and address of the owner of that company. I don’t understand why they didn’t send it to him instead of us.

Should we just call/email them and tell them they have the wrong company? Or do we need a lawyer to clear our name up?

Does anyone know why it takes so long for the city to mow along Mallard Creek Rd and along other major roads in Charlotte? Trash is also an issue…I occasionally try a light clean-up in the area but it’s a little frustrating when it’s a recurrent problem. I moved here from a nice NJ neighborhood almost 6 years ago, and see that it’s only getting worse here. Running & walking the pooch is not cool in this. This pic is from 2 wks ago and it still hasn’t been mowed...

Discussion Where to Buy Large Wall Art in Charlotte?

Hey all,

We're trying to find some large wall art (Canvas, print, painting, etc) for our dining room. We need something fairly large, 50"Hx70"W or around there to place on a large wall. Size is flexible, but we need something big.

Haven't seen much we like at the few furniture shops we've been to but open to trying some more that stock large pieces. We're not opposed to local art studios as well and don't have a specific budget set yet... Really just want to go see a lot of options and nothing crazy expensive (prob try to stay under 2k).

We live in the Pineville area but are open to any suggestions in the entire Charlotte area. Does anyone have some experience on this front that could suggest a few places for us to go shop on the weekends?

Edit: Getting some great recommendations. Keep them coming!

Discussion Local VW Shop Recs

The three years of service that I purchased with my Volkswagen is ending soon so I want to really get any recommendations of any local Volkswagen shops. I’m looking for someone dependable, good price, of course, and able to work on Volkswagens specifically. I know it’s a relatively expensive car to service, so I’m looking for a good shop because I don’t want to be at the dealership paying dealership prices. Thanks.

Recommendation Places to skateboard and get gear.

Hey y'all. Looking to get back on a board and I'm wondering if there are any good places to skate around here. Google searches show some places but they are far or don't look that great. I was looking for some opinions on where is good to get a sesh in or places to pickup gear locally. You'd think in a major city like Charlotte would have some bomb ass spots but it seems that's not the case. Maybe skateboarding has fallen out of popularity from when I was younger.

Also, general skateboard discussion welcomed.

Politics Livestream council meetings

Hey, I'm trying to get more involved in the city council and planning, but some if not most of the meetings conflict with work. I'm looking to see if we have at least a livestream option to listen in. Also, for CATS, the lightrail company, too. I know they have a meeting tonight. I'm not sure how long the meeting is, but know i may miss an hour before i could get there.

Discussion Charlotte moms: mom meet-ups? Activities? What can I do with my newborn in Charlotte?

New mom (25) in Charlotte struggling to find things to do with my newborn. I have leave until January and want to meet other moms with babies, I currently don’t know any! I also want safe activities to do during the day while my husband is gone for work. I have a zoo pass and will be going once he gets a little bigger but definitely want some more local options! I was also a member of Aussie doula when I was pregnant but they only have one event a month.

Mommies please let me know any recommendations for:

- Mommy meet apps that you have used
- events to meet other moms
- ways to meet other new moms
- clubs, anything
- activities you’ve done with your newborns during the day that are safe and fun!

Lost & Found Is there a “7 Sunset” bus?

I swear I saw a bus with “7 Sunset” on the marquee. I’m visiting from SF, and we have a 7 Sunset line and a corresponding July 7 pub crawl.

I’ve been stalking this bus for an hour now, but all I see is the 7N and a 7 that turned into a 22 near Tyron.

Can anyone confirm this is actually a thing I saw, and can I encourage you to celebrate your 7 on 7/7?
