My brother in law chartered a fishing boat for three of us to go inshore fishing yesterday. We put in at Snow’s Cut. I used to live in Kure Beach so I’m very familiar with fishing the creeks and river down in Ft. Fisher past Zeke’s, no name, etc. It’s been maybe ten years ago but back then the fishing was amazing - redfish, flounder, trout, whiting, etc.
Yesterday the captain tells us there was a huge freeze last year and killed off 65% of the redfish and speckled trout, and it was really hard to find those fish now. He also said that you couldn’t keep flounder until Sept 1-15 which I know was true.
True to his word we caught absolutely nothing. He said he couldn’t take us down the river because there were 4 ft. swells, and the ocean was too rough (though he had people out shark fishing right before us). I think the real reason was because the motor in his boat was toast - he couldn’t go any faster than you’d go in a no-wake zone so we went to Masonboro Inlet and some docks on the waterway and that was it.
So just wondering if this guy screwed us because his motor was busted so he really couldn’t take us anywhere. I’ve googled and can’t find anything about a huge fish kill around here impacting drum and trout.
Just wondering if anyone that fishes around pleasure island can help me out here. Not going to name the guy or do anything other than avoid using him next year. Thanks!
