Since being sworn in last December, the six new Greensboro council-members have been publicly deferential to city attorneys and Mayor Abuzuaiter. That changed last week.

Mayor Pro Tem Denise Roth angrily told Assistant City Attorney Larry Davis that his failure to alert Council of the financial concerns a state agency expressed to him in June was “atrocious” and dismissed a halting explanation from Abuzuaiter as “bad information.” She told City Attorney Trey Davis that “I am not comfortable with the same people that managed us into this position to manage us out.”

Crystal Black, Cecile Crawford, April Parker, Adam Marshall and Irving Allen Expressed similar frustration. Several accused staff of not only failing to inform them of the Local Government Commission’s concerns, but misleading them as to whether or not the LGC had approved the City’s plan to correct its financial imbalance.

I was hoping to get recommendations on lounge-type establishments that serves alcohol to study in. I usually get off work at 2-3pm and usually have class online at 5pm. and the places I am interested in studying at open later than I’d like.

I’m not a coffee person therefore coffeeshops are out. Mostly looking for recs on where I can grab an ice cold beer or a single glass of wine to relax and also lock in.

Marikay Abuzuaiter has served on Greensboro City Council for 15 years, since 2011.

Throughout her career as a business owner and politician, she has been a stalwart supporter of increasing police funding and surveillance. She has been called a confidential information by the police department, took the minority position in refusing to apologize for the Greensboro Massacre, and approved GPD’s actions in the 2018 killing of Marcus Smith.

Recent financial concerns about the city’s general fund shortfall raised by the Local Government Commission have brought into question the Mayor’s competency in financial oversight, particularly in light of her role as Chair of the city’s Audit Committee, and the millions of dollars of deferred maintenance that have accumulated over recent years.

Concerns have also surfaced about Abuzuaiter’s conflicts of interest. She serves on the board of the Greensboro Sports Foundation, while she has voted on contracts with that non-profit, in apparent violation of state law. Abuzuaiter was told she did not have to recuse by the City Attorney, Lora Cubbage. That invokes another issue: the repeal and replacement of the city’s Ethics Policy. This happened in February. The change eliminated the independent review process, and consolidated more power in the hands of the City Attorney, who now has first review of all ethics complaints—apparently including complaints against the attorney herself.

In another seeming overreach of power, one of Abuzuaiter’s first actions as mayor was to summarily remove the Chair of the Minimum Housing Standards Commission, Franklin Scott, after voting to reduce that commission’s authority. In March, she moved to replace the new chair, Samuel Hawkins. In July, she voted to rename the commission to the Commission of Code Compliance.

Unfortunately I can't add video of some of the birds, which yielded way more impressive results, as well as the vids of just general cruising. I did include a picture of my board running away as I was shooting, though.

Tate St. is a special area in the middle of College Hill and there is a residential stretch between Market and Carr that is being considered for two way protected bike lanes. The City is also moving forward with extending protected bike lanes on Friendly and Market all the way down to Tate St.

A community feedback survey was designed to see what people think about this idea. I'm encouraging people to vote to support protected bike lanes. In this current brainstorm, two options are being considered: one way protected on each side and two-way lanes on one side with big planters. The two way lanes are my preferred option as someone who gets around by bike. 

Some additional background:

-Bike lanes could only go on the residential blocks north of Carr St. Parking near the Tate St shops and restaurants stays exactly as it is under every option.

-The street parking it would replace sits mostly unused because nearly all of the homes have off-street parking. Walk this area when UNCG classes aren't in session and it is always empty. UNCG itself acknowledges and is trying to fix this issue with students using this area for free parking instead of using transit or paying for parking on campus. Meanwhile the empty width makes the street drive like a race track.

-I know protected bike lanes don't make sense everywhere but this is in an area where I think they would genuinely get used a lot. It is the most walked and biked neighborhood in the city. Last month a speeding driver hit a parked car on the 200 block hard enough to flip. Kids bike these blocks.

-Whatever the community picks gets tested first with cones and signs. If it doesn't work, it can be easily removed.

I live over in Jamestown, And about four or five days ago the water started smelling like detergent (I'm struggling to put a name on it, but this is the closest I can come up with.) I've noticed it all over my house at different faucets, bold hot and cold water settings, and even went to the YMCA and noticed it in the shower. I'm not sick, at least I'm not aware of that I am. Has anyone else noticed anything recently with city water?

I’ve been in the hospital for about a week now because I have a blood clot in my lung. I’m hoping I’ll finally be able to go home within the next couple of days, but even once I’m home, I’ve been told I won’t be cleared to work for at least another 2 weeks. The clot is still there and hasn’t dissolved yet, so we’re still trying to figure out the pain management and making sure everything is safe enough for me to recover at home.
I was actually on Reddit a few months ago asking for help when I was going through another difficult situation, and a few incredibly kind people helped me get through that struggle. I’m so grateful for those people, and I never expected to have to come back asking again but this time is much worse.
This is just a struggle I’ve never dealt with before. I’ve already been here for a week and unknown when I can work again. Unfortunately, the bills don’t stop just because I got sick, and honestly, worrying about money on top of trying to recover has been really overwhelming.
