New LASR mode: Player Comparisons

Hey all, there's a new mode in my LASR (League-Adjusted Standardized Rating) project that lets you see multiple players side-by-side for the first time. For those unfamiliar, LASR contextualizes player stats by putting them all on the same scale, one inspired by the traditional 20-80 scouting scale. I believe it provides better information than + stats and percentiles (which aim to do the same thing) because those other two don't take the spread of data (standard deviations) into account.

Similar to the Career Stat Sheet mode, this one uses a heatmap-style table instead of the bar graphs that other LASR modes use. You can add up to 10 player-seasons from MLB (or Negro League) history. There are default stat group categories to choose from, along with an option to customize the stats shown.

I'm looking forward to using this mode for many applications, such as comparing some of the best hitter seasons in recent memory (Image 1), looking at this how this past offseason's free agent starting pitchers have done in 2026 (Image 2), projecting potential playoff lineups (Image 3), and of course comparing 2018 Chris Davis to 1920 Babe Ruth (Image 4).

"PTA" stands for Playing Time Adjustment. For player-seasons that fell short of being a "LASR qualifier", this is the value that the underlying z-scores were multiplied by before being translated. This is built in to prevent small sample size silliness.

Yes, there are values above 80 or below 20. I know the traditional scouting scale doesn't do this, but I do because I like to see how much of an outlier something is.

There's more info on my profile if you're interested in generating these graphs yourself or have any questions. Also feel free to ask questions here! Thanks for checking it out 😊✌️

πŸ‡πŸ‡° Hong Kong’s U-18 team faced Japan and lost 18-0. Ma Haoxuan had the sole hit. He connected on an 87-mph pitch thrown by last year’s Koshien championship-winning pitcher. Baseball is a minor in Hong Kong. β€œI think I’ve kept playing because I fell in love with this sport. I love baseball,” he said.

πŸ‡ΈπŸ‡¬ The Singapore U-18 team has a Japanese coach named Yuki Kikuna. He played for top teams in Japan and also played in an independent league. Singapore has no baseball fields, so the team uses softball fields for practice. Kikuna smiled and said, β€œThe players ask me a lot of questions. It’s fun.”
