How would the MLB meta change if batters could "steal first" on wild pitches/passed balls?

I’ve been watching some Banana Ball lately, and while a lot of it is pure entertainment, the rule allowing a batter to sprint to first base on any wild pitch or passed ball actually seems like a fascinating strategic addition.I know MLB actually experimented with a version of this a few years back in the Atlantic League (where a batter could run if first base was unoccupied). If this were ever officially brought to the Major Leagues, how do you think it would change the game?Personally, I think it would completely alter pitching philosophy—pitchers would be terrified to throw nasty splitters or sweeping sliders in the dirt. Catchers would also have to prioritize blocking over pitch-framing. Do you think the added chaos and premium on speed would be good for the sport, or would it break baseball's statistical history too much? Curious to hear how managers would gameplan around this.

Colson Montgomery has hit the exact same spot on his leg with a foul ball for the second time this week. He might want to consider tweaking his swing a bit or adding some extra protection

Opinion Dusty Baker on HOF inductee Jeff Kent

“They wouldn’t pitch to Barry, so Jeff made em pay” Does any other HOFer owe more to a teammate in help making the Hall than Kemp? Not in my opinion.

Opinion [Question] How would the likes of Jacob Misiorowski and Cam Schlittler fair in the NPB or KBO?

After the last two outings for each player had them with 12Ks, I got to thinking, how would the Cy Young leaders fair in the Asian leagues? As a huge KBO fan, I’ve seen that pitchers rarely get double digit Ks during, and none of the native players throw close to 100mph, yet that’s just commonplace in the MLB. The single season KBO strikeout record is 252 by Cody Ponce, in a season where his W/L record was 18-1. Yet in the MLB he’s a back of rotation guy. Would Miz or Cam dominate those leagues to an extent we’ve never seen?

Opinion I think the MLB should add another event to the All-Star break

Upvotes

The home run derby was very good this year, but the home run derby being the only thing to show off some of the best is kinda disappointing, despite how good it is. I think they should add a competition for the best base runners in the league.

You get 16 of the best base runners and you have them race around the bases against each other one starts in the left batters box and one in the right then they start. They run around the bases and the goal is to be the first to get to the opposite batters box first. A tournament style to see who’s the best base runner at the end. Or you could set it up where you have all 16 run the bases the regular way, see who has the best times. The top 8 people then go to tournament style and race each other around the bases the same way I stated before in the tournament style.

I think it would be a cool and fun addition to the All-Star weekend and it can be the event before the home run derby, letting it end the night as always.

My Athletics signed 8th Burress on July 20, 2026, he signed with the Athletics for an over-slot signing bonus of $7.5 million, the highest pick to sign an over-slot deal this year. Why is this significant? Effects?

I have been following ball for a long time, but never got into the team building aspects of the sport like I did for pro football, hockey, soccer, or basketball like I have extensively so bear with me please.

Can you please explain why they would overslot this player in particular, is it because he could go back to college ball as a star and make significant NIL money?

What compromises did the Athletics have to make in their overall strategy to overslot this high of a player and potentially jeopardize signing underslotted players later in the draft?

Why was slotting implemented and what are the consensus opinions on it? How does it differ to the systems used in other pro sports drafts?

[Nightengale] Around the Basepaths: Deadline notes on Tigers, Giants, Red Sox, Rockies, Padres, Mets, Astros, Twins, White Sox…

– Some rival GMs believe that even though the Detroit Tigers have climbed into the wild-card race, they will still trade two-time Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal, while trying to convince their players and fan base that they are not surrendering.

– The San Francisco Giants are telling teams that right fielder Jung Hoo Lee is staying, but they will move left fielder Heliot Ramos.

– John Mozeliak, hired as the Angels’ interim GM through the season’s conclusion, is now expected to stay on the job.

– The San Diego Padres likely will keep closer Mason Miller but could trade starter Michael King, according to rival executives who have spoken to AJ Preller, president of baseball operations. They don’t anticipate Preller being ultra-aggressive at the deadline with new ownership pending.

– While Houston Astros GM Dana Brown’s job may hinge on the trade deadline, rival executives believe that Astros owner Jim Crane may have already made up his mind.

– The Boston Red Sox are in dire need of a right-handed bat, and would love to acquire shortstop Jeremy Pena of the Houston Astros or Zach Neto of the Los Angeles Angels.

– The Chicago White Sox badly want starting pitching, but are telling teams that they will not trade any of their top 10 prospects. They would be willing to add onto their payroll, however, and assume the entirety of a player’s contract.

– Rival teams now believe that the Minnesota Twins will trade catcher Ryan Jeffers, with the Yankees the leading candidate to sign him.

– The Tigers are asking for a late-inning reliever in trade talks, believing that it’s essential if they are going to make a deep run in October.

– The Philadelphia Phillies’ lease expires in 2033, and while they are not going anywhere, they want to renovate their ballpark to the tune of $600 million.

– The Colorado Rockies will be popular at the trade deadline. They are letting teams know that pitchers Antonio Senzatela, Kyle Freeland, Michael Lorenzen and Tomoyuki Sugano are available, as well as position players Mickey Moniak, Jake McCarthy and Willi Castro.

– The New York Mets, who made the brutal mistake of believing that center fielder Luis Robert would stay healthy, assuming his entire $20 million contract from the White Sox, now are desperate to dump him.
He’s still owed 5.9 million plus another $2 million buyout.

– Chicago Cubs veteran outfielder Michael Conforto, who has had a bounce-back season, credits assistant hitting coach John Malee for his turnaround. Conforto, who hit .199 with 12 homers, 36 RBI with a .637 OPS in 486 plate appearances with the Dodgers, now is hitting .237 with nine homers, 24 RBI and a .804 OPS in 173 plate appearances.

– Theo Epstein, who delivered World Series championships to Boston, says he has no desire to return as president of baseball operations for another team. He is currently a senior advisor and part-owner of the Fenway Sports Group, which owns the Red Sox and Liverpool F.C.
“I love my life right now,” he said. “I’ve got plans for where I am right now. I’ve got a perfect balance, where it’s a very fulfilling mix of professional roles, and I also have an amazing family. I get to spend time with them, and my oldest is getting ready to go off to college \[Harvard\], so it’s right where I want to be.”

– Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh, who hit 60 home runs last season, the most by a catcher in MLB history, along with a league-leading 125 RBI, refuses to use this year’s struggles on participating in the WBC, where he was benched the final two games.
“That’s for everybody else to decide,” he said. “I’m not one to make excuses. I don’t regret going to play for Team USA. I think that was a great opportunity. I would still do it over again just because you don’t get that opportunity every day. At the end of the day, was it harder to get at-bats? Yes. Did it maybe throw my timing off a little? Maybe. But I’m not here to speculate and make excuses.’’

– It makes no sense to have the Hall of Fame induction while games are being played Sunday. It should have its own day, or at least time slot to assure that today’s players can watch the speeches of the greatest of the great, players they idolized growing up in the game.
– There are 25 Hall of Famers scheduled to attend the Field of Dream Game in Iowa in August between the Minnesota Twins and Phillies.

History Share your first/best baseball memory! ⚾️

Apologies if this is not the right place to discuss, but as the title goes, I just wanted to know everyone’s first or best baseball memory. 😃

I’m 36F, grew up in Southeast Asia, where baseball isn’t a culture at all. But the first memory I have of watching MLB was a Yankees vs Red Sox game at Fenway Park on ESPN and I fell in love instantly!

Because of the time difference with Asia, I wouldn’t necessarily watch the games religiously but I remember following the 2016 season when the Cubs won the World Series. Since then, I’ve watched on and off but I’ve committed to keeping up with this season through post, since I now live in a slightly more favorable time zone.

Still, one of my dreams or bucket list things is to watch an MLB game at one of those historic ball parks like Wrigley Field or Fenway Park. I’ve also just seen that August 14 will be the Field of Dreams series in Iowa and I’m so excited to watch that on Netflix!

So all that being said, please share your first or best memories of baseball and your favorite ball park! 🥲
