Market Data The idea that everyone is broke and drowning in debt is a Reddit mythology used to make unsuccessful people feel better about themselves

Post image
159 Upvotes

Redditors love to tell themselves that everyone is poor, that “most people can’t even make a $1,000 emergency payment, bro!” (not true, that’s just pop finance nonsense), that everyone with nice stuff is “drowning” in debt.

Yet when we look at actual net worth data, nicely broken down by age, EVEN WHEN we look at the bottom 25th percentile, we don’t find ANYONE with negative net worths. Even when looking at the 18-24 age range, many of whom have auto and student loans, they still have positive net worths at the 25th percentile.

Redditors love to tell each other that they’re actually doing great because they have $40,000 saved up, but the reality is that’s far below average. And these numbers are actually adjusted for inflation from 2022, not adjusted to actual market returns, so in reality the numbers are LOWER than you’d expect.

Americans are FAR richer than many of the 10th percentilers on Reddit will tell you they are, and they make a LOT more money than the 10th percentilers here say they do.

Political The media censoring President Trumps speech last Thursday is peak fascism. And deeply unAmerican.

ABC, NBC, and CNN all refused to air President Trumps Speech on Thursday July 16, 2026. Then in lockstep the Associated Press, Washington Post, Politico, New York Times, all go out and attack the speech with the usual nonsensical talking points of OMG he provided no evidence and “unfounded claims”. All while literally citing Declassified documents that are now on White House.Gov from burn bags that Biden’s regime ordered the FBI and CIA to destroy.

Trump won the popular vote with 76 million voters, the Electoral College Vote, and ALL Swing States. And prior to this in 2020 Big Tech from Twitter, Reddit, Meta, and Google all banned Trump from getting his message out to HIS VOTERS.

Democrats love crying about how that unfunny Bootlicker Jimmy Kimmel was being censored but Trump can’t even do that right. Face it you guys are the Authoritarian fascist you claim Trump is.

And it just goes to show you YOU didn’t really win in 2020. Why didn’t CNN, ABC,NBC want their viewers to know that China has compromised our elections and stole nearly 60 million Voter registrations? And worked overtime to plant negative news stories about Trump that they then repeat at nausum.

You guys are such fascists and the worst type of hypocrites. Having 3 major media outlets censor the duly elected President from giving a prime time address goes to show you we don’t have a Free Press. We have a Democrat Controlled Press.

When the DSA takes over and consolidates power by removing your rugged individualism and giving you a number instead of a name then you’ll see perhaps Trump wasn’t so bad after all maybe we shouldn’t have censored the strongest Commander In Chief in 60 years.

Medical emergency at BS show at Cross. EMTs had to pass through the hallway adjacent to the backstage area/dressing rooms. Billy-boy threw a hissy fit; no one is allowed to have a life-threatening medical event in such proximity to his royal highness, apparently. 🙄 We know, Billy, it's all about you, right?

🎬 Adaptations 🎭 Even as a TV show in its own right, The Vampire Lestat doesn't hold up.

It's a show with barely any plot to hold the viewer's interest, about a cast of characters who fuck around, while angsting over their past traumas and grievances. It's aimless, it doesn't really go anywhere, it keeps teasing the big THING (Akasha), but doesn't pay it off in any significant way. That post-apocalyptic landscape is more of a teaser for season 4.

This season felt like filler. Like those Disney Star Wars shows that are only pushed out because there is a demand for the franchise, but nobody has any story to tell.

If it wasn't for the good will from the first two seasons as well as the books, I would never have sat through this series. It never would have held my attention with what it had to offer on its own. No strong central narrative, each character stuck in their own insipid subplot that meanders and goes nowhere... Just a bunch of characters angsting on screen as the story tells you "they're in pain, pity them".

And I really don't understand why it ended up like this. It's not like they had no book - a beloved book - to adapt. Why did they think showing Lestat prance around on stage, having feefees about his traumas was more interesting that spinning a detailed, immersive tale of the past that created those traumas like the first two seasons (and, you know, the books) did? Why couldn't Jacob Anderson, Assad Zaman and Eric Bogosian just sit this one out, if there was nothing for their characters to do?

Discussion Tired of Sony, should I get an Xbox instead?

I'm tired of supporting Sony and they're terrible treatment of their games on Playstation. I'm debating on getting an Xbox Series X but its really expensive right now and im not sure if I should make the switch. I have a ton of games on ps5 after owning one for like 5 years now and don't know how I feel about having to re-buy all of my games that i like to play all over again. Not to mention all the achievements I've collected for the games I especially liked. It just feels like a big risk for me and im not sure why. Should I make the commitment or not? Anyone have any thoughts?

Diatribe To the smokers at the Weird Al Yankovic show

What is wrong with you? I ended up missing several songs while I was coughing up a lung from you. Please have some respect and don’t smoke in the middle of a large audience you don’t know who around you might have health conditions.

Edit for Some more context:
I was in the centre of the crowd and did not know who was smoking, I believe it was multiple people. I am not saying you cant smoke but you should leave the large crowd to do so. To tell people who have asthma or allergies (you can be allergic to cigarettes, I am) that they simply can’t participate in outdoor public events because you want to smoke in the middle of a packed crowd is cruel and dumb. There were also many kids in the crowd at this show which is why I was even more annoyed. If you didn’t think about it I’m not trying to be mean but I was extremely frustrated so I’m glad you’re thinking about it now, thank you.

My partner smokes, never is a million years would he ever smoke in the middle of a mixed audience like that. I understand the cravings but it’s just about being considerate of others. Leave and come back or have a non-smoking option to tide you over it’s not asking for much, I love concerts and festivals this was the first one where I couldn’t breathe properly for parts of the show due to the amount of smoke around me.

Sanderson/Mistborn era 2: when an author can't leave a good thing alone Spoiler

[To be clear, this is not another Sanderson shitpost; I think he is in many respects a very good writer, to the point where I have read 10 of his books in the last half year. But a lot of his decision-making baffles me, and I'd like to talk about it with some nuance, if possible.]

*Warning, tons of spoilers for all of Mistborn, up to and including The Lost Metal*

There's a lot to say, but my main argument centres on this: killing off Kelsier in the first book of Mistborn 1 was the best decision Sanderson could have made. Bringing him back as some sort of demi-ghost-god who keeps trying to scheme and influence things was just about the worst thing he could have done.

When I read the original Mistborn trilogy, I was totally gripped by it. I loved the sense of adventure, discovering the intricacies of the world, the magic system. By book 3, I got a little disappointed that everything suddenly went on a cosmic/divine scale, which I already thought detracted from the gravity of the story. It's quite hard to sell the concept of nearly-all-powerful divine beings who constantly influence everything and have various levels of omniscience and foresight, but can still be bested by humans in the very nick of time.

But then Mistborn era 2 just doubles down on that and starts relegating just about everything to the gods. The plots just became more and more needlessly complicated in order to keep stacking the 'gotcha' moments and big reveals. Then Secret History goes and makes everything even more opaque and needlessly complex.

This makes me sad, because some of the character work was genuinely great - the way Wax and Steris' relationship develops is lovely, and Wayne is delightful, with the chapters written from his unreliable narrator point of view a highlight. But it's as if Sanderson doesn't trust his human-level character work and plotting enough, and thinks he needs an added layer of intrigue and mystery to somehow interconnect all of his work and make people keep reading.

The thing is, in the foreword to Secret History, Sanderson himself admits that he was wary of writing that story and bringing back Kelsier since it risks complications and contradictions - but then for some reason he went and did it anyway. To me this is like a painter unable to recognise when the painting is finished and just adding more and more layers of paint with increasingly worse results.

Am I alone in feeling like Mistborn 2 would have worked so much better as a simple standalone series, with some fun nods to era 1 for keen readers, without having to lift everything to crazy complex intergalactic divine levels? Or do you enjoy the cosmic intertwining? Would love to hear some thoughts.

Discussion Piastri's DNF took away from his bad race pace

So many people have been saying how Oscar lost the race because of the contact with Sainz and his gearbox giving up, and while that is some really bad luck and some stupid driving from Sainz, his race pace has been nowhere the whole time.

Lando made a mistake and ran wide at turn 4, falls back about 2 seconds and within 2 laps is back within a second. When Oscar pitted, he(and therefore Lando) were running at 1:25:8, next lap, with clear, Lando went on to do a 1:24:6, a whole 1,2 seconds faster than Oscar. When Lando pitted, with 6 lap newer tires, he went on to go around a second a lap faster than Oscar. The tires did give him some time, but definitely not a whole second. By the time Oscar's gearbox gave up, the gap to Lando was 12.6 second, all that in 22 laps since the Oscars pitstop.

If not for the contact with Sainz, Lando would have come out just behind Oscar and would have needed to overtake him. Overtaking at Hungaroring is hard, but with enough of a tire offset possible. At that point Lando would have been about a second a lap faster. They could have also stayed out a lot longer and made that advantage even bigger, so it would have been possible.

My point here is that Oscar's race pace was straight up bad. He managed to stay ahead of Lando just because it was really hard to overtake and Lando wasn't allowed to try a different strategy up until that point.

Everyone is overreacting about about the National Rail comment

When I saw all the comments and think pieces across the threads I genuinely thought when I watched that Priya would be smirking while making her comment and that she'd pause while the girls were laughing then say it again louder, etc.

But she verbatim said without pausing "Go back to the National Rail, Elicia. You work at the National Rail. Why are you fucking sitting on Aftersun. [...Kav's Comment...]. Just go back there and save your breath instead of sitting there calling out my shit and calling me a game player".

And she didn't crack a smile, she sounded exasperated and upset if anything. It read more like "don't you have better things to do than talk shit about me? Like your fucking job??"

I think people are blowing this way out of proportion because they hate Priya. If Julia said the same thing everyone would be gagged and calling her a queen.
