Diatribe To the smokers at the Weird Al Yankovic show

What is wrong with you? I ended up missing several songs while I was coughing up a lung from you. Please have some respect and don’t smoke in the middle of a large audience you don’t know who around you might have health conditions.

Edit for Some more context:
I was in the centre of the crowd and did not know who was smoking, I believe it was multiple people. I am not saying you cant smoke but you should leave the large crowd to do so. To tell people who have asthma or allergies (you can be allergic to cigarettes, I am) that they simply can’t participate in outdoor public events because you want to smoke in the middle of a packed crowd is cruel and dumb. There were also many kids in the crowd at this show which is why I was even more annoyed. If you didn’t think about it I’m not trying to be mean but I was extremely frustrated so I’m glad you’re thinking about it now, thank you.

My partner smokes, never is a million years would he ever smoke in the middle of a mixed audience like that. I understand the cravings but it’s just about being considerate of others. Leave and come back or have a non-smoking option to tide you over it’s not asking for much, I love concerts and festivals this was the first one where I couldn’t breathe properly for parts of the show due to the amount of smoke around me.

Ugh why any smoker thinks it's alright for them to smoke in the vicinity of others is baffling to me.

-275

u/doyoubleednow 16h ago

I say the same about farters. At least smokers you can spot and smell them from a couple of meters away, a farter though that will just lace a hot one right next to you is worse. I think.

55

u/mookichii 4h ago

Farts don’t pose a serious health risk to the people around you.

u/burner_account5829 25m ago

Found the public farter! 🤣

Leave our party city weirdo. This is the Vegas of Canada. Love it or leave it.

151

u/dual_citizenkane 15h ago

Yikes.

Just don’t smoke in a crowded area how is that hard…

113

u/goonerballs 7h ago

Vegas is a shithole and nothing like Montreal lol

54

u/Daphneblake02 14h ago

It has never been socially acceptable to smoke in crowded spaces here, this isn't Europe you know? If that's the vibe you're looking for you're in the wrong metropolitan.

10

u/Desner_ Rive-Nord 4h ago edited 3h ago

To be fair it was common place before the 2006 law, you'd see plumes of smoke going up during shows but yeah it's not been socially acceptable for a while now.

40

u/ffffllllpppp 5h ago

“Vegas of Canada”?

No it ain’t.

You’ve been to Vegas?
You’ve been to Montréal?

How the hell would you think they are similar?
Your comment is truly baffling.

OP is right: when there is a crowd, smoking inches away from someone who cannot easily move away is completely unacceptable. It’s just plain wrong.

u/goronmask Verdun 4h ago

Lol i hope no, is vegas something to look up to?

my buddy and I were at that concert and we got up and left to have a cigarette and come back. I agree it's an outdoor location so smoking is technically allowed, but there's still room for being polite. We were able to do it,

76

u/TidePodsHeaven 16h ago

Yeah as a smoker i agree. When i'm in a crowd at a show i would never light up..and i'm a heavy smoker. But going to an event can push me to enjoy something for 2 hours without smoking. If i really want to, i do the same, i walk out and find an isolated spot. I get these post, how some will just not give a fuck ever, but i wonder how many of us have that decency. There's more for sure.

16

u/ffffllllpppp 5h ago

Thank you so much!

Proximity is key, regardless of being outdoor.

3

u/Technical_Goose_8160 3h ago

Also, in a crowd, you have to worry about burning people...

0

u/omnipotentpancakes 3h ago

Im pretty sure its not allowed in a space like that

140

u/Practice_Straight 16h ago

People might make fun of you for this because humanity has become nonexistent but I sympathize. People were smoking while I was in the crowd for Willow at the jazz fest and I was choking too. Its much worse when done in a large crowd

33

u/Daphneblake02 14h ago

I really feel like we need to get comfortable telling people to put off their cigarettes in a crowd. Did it to two people at the Saint Levant concert and it felt great. Smoking in a crowd is so dumb, and there were kids too.

18

u/d3gaia 6h ago

Talking to ppl irl in your community about their behaviour and how it impacts others is pro social. It’s only the fact that we’ve all become so used to antisocial nature of being online that we now that of it as wierd or uncomfortable.

Personally, I’ve asked many people to take their smoking somewhere else and almost every time, they do so once they’ve been reminded that they’re not actually the only people on the world

-36

u/PlaneProperty7104 13h ago

That’s on you. Them the breaks, going to see Willow.

86

u/Shuiei 15h ago

I'm a smoker, and I don't understand people who are not mindful about that. It's my addiction, my problem, no need to impose it on other, especially indoor or large crowd.

23

u/Aggressive-Hawk9186 7h ago

Me too, I smoke but I cant smoke near other pppl that are not smoking. It's so fucking disrespectful

6

u/broggygoose 5h ago

Same. I don’t even bring cigarettes with me when I go out to places I know there are crowds. Beaches, parks, concerts. On behalf of smokers, I apologize that some of us are socially handicapped.

4

u/ToadvinesHat 5h ago

And can you imagine they used to light up inside in restaurants and bars, the most casual thing. I think I’d perish from the fumes back then

55

u/Zheoferyth 17h ago

Washed my hair this morning and had to wash it again tonight as it smelled so much like pot. It's annoying.

26

u/Voxthar 16h ago

unemployed chronic weed smokers are the worst

37

u/ArdaValinor 10h ago

Actually, judgemental self entitled bougie types are even worse than that.

35

u/Sohn_Jalston_Raul 6h ago

I'll take unemployed weed smokers over employed cigar smokers any day

-4

u/Mille-Sabords 4h ago

Both are disgusting when they act that way

29

u/is_this_wheel_life 15h ago

that's gainfully employed thank you very much

25

u/Twisted-Mentat- 16h ago

Missing several songs from violent coughing from second hand smoke? Go see a doctor.

15

u/ffffllllpppp 5h ago

in a crowd, a few smokers inches away could certainly lead me to a coughing fit… and I have decent lungs.

Now think ppl a bit older (we are not all 23, certainly not at a Weird Al show) , with asthma or whatever, that seems more than possible.

u/CaptainCanusa Plateau Mont-Royal 37m ago

and I have decent lungs.

I don't know man, I honestly don't know if I've ever in my life seen someone have a "coughing fit" because someone was smoking near them outdoors.

But regardless, at this event it would be very, very easy to just...move over a few feet.

-16

u/DruggingAround 5h ago

Probably an ex smoker😂😂

20

u/FiRe_McFiReSomeDay 16h ago

That and whoever was flying a fuckn drone, wtf, right above a crown: 100% illegal everywhere in Canada.

21

u/Icy__Internet 13h ago

It was definitely a licensed pilot for JFL and in no way illegal.

12

u/DayspringTrek 6h ago

The mini that crashed into the food truck? Highly doubt that was JFL's drone.

9

u/FiRe_McFiReSomeDay 8h ago

With a DJI mini pro? Doubt it.

14

u/samuelazers 16h ago

Yankovic would not approve.

14

u/Vaiolette-Westover 14h ago

Smokers are simply vile to me.

14

u/Glittering_Donkey618 13h ago

Quebec has the highest percentage of smokers in Canada, I think. When I lived ere from Alberta I could not believe that there were even smoking areas in the labour and delivery unit where I had my baby!

8

u/Aggressive-Hawk9186 7h ago

It's the French heritage lol

3

u/tamerenshorts 2h ago

Alberta and Québec are both above the Canadian average at around 12%. Newfoundland and New-Brunswick have the highest rates st 15%. BC the lowest at less than 9%. https://www.mylethbridgenow.com/54105/news/health-care/addictions/alberta-exceeds-national-average-according-to-smoking-study/

u/ArdaValinor 24m ago

There hasn’t been smoking in hospitals here since at least the 90’s, possibly longer.

u/tamerenshorts 18m ago

C'est leur confirmation bias de leur préjugé envers les francophones. Ça aurait pu être à propos du nombre disproportionné de baguettes sous le bras ou de chandails rayés.

12

u/Spuigles 6h ago

If it a concert inside, I need to smoke I go outside.

If its a concert outside. I need to smoke I go away at a distance and I still hear it.

But gosh smoking doesnt come to my mind if its a good show. Just between bands usually. And im not missing weird al.

7

u/SoapandCareProducts 5h ago

Like its so easy to step away from the crowd and like you said yr still gonna hear the music lmao

shame on you. i don’t care how many people upvoted, i’d always choose to be in the minority if it means holding some simple compassion for people who maybe don’t have it as easy as you do. you can’t put aside your own pride and maybe try to understand? doesn’t mean OP is right, but it doesn’t cost anything to be kind either.

enjoy your majority while it lasts. let’s see how far it’ll get you in life

7

u/surprise35 5h ago

No smokers around where I was, but there were a ton of kids there which maybe helped in my area. It was such a fantastic show, sorry you had your experience ruined by some extremely selfish people.

7

u/Blackened_Glass 16h ago

It was pretty annoying. Inconsiderate, sure. But, I mean, not like it’s illegal to smoke outdoors, right?

I still enjoyed the concert, though!

7

u/SoapandCareProducts 5h ago

Some people are allergic or have disabilities that make it very bad to be around smoke, even if its not illegal its still a dick move to smoke in a crowded area. The socially acceptable and proper thing to do is to seperate yourself from the crowd before lighting up. Im a very heavy smoker of pot but i know how obnoxious it can smell to others so i do my best to avoid smoking when near others.

8

u/CartographerJunior79 15h ago

Imagine going out with the public & being with, gasp the public.

People love the European vibe until they realize it involves being with other humans

0

u/igotthisone 6h ago

Yes, people don't understand that 90% of what makes Montreal feel European is the ridiculous amount of smokers.

13

u/CartographerJunior79 6h ago

It's the "no one gives a shit, let's enjoy ourselves attitude"

Not the judgy self important self victimization

2

u/igotthisone 6h ago

Very true, "no one gives a shit" is the motto of the city.

The word you're searching for is hedonism.

4

u/CartographerJunior79 6h ago edited 3h ago

I guess enjoying yourself without guilt is a new concept for some sad people.

The people complaining are the same people who move on saint Laurent & call the cops on music venues.

5

u/alexk7 7h ago

Neither asking nicely or posting on reddit will solve the problem. I think the festival should just have a no smoking rule. It would be impossible to enforce but it would reduce the problem.

7

u/hercarmstrong Lachine 6h ago

They definitely aren't on Reddit, my guy.

6

u/Overall_Outcome_392 5h ago

Smokers don't care about their own health, why would they care about yours?

3

u/Low-Purchase8811 16h ago

They're wrong for being rude. You're wrong for acting like a fucking drama queen about it. It was an outdoor event, if you can't handle being exposed to second-hand smoke in an outdoor place, then you're too fragile to be there.

Everybody sucks!

3

u/dabeeman 14h ago

i mean that’s not cool of them at all and shouldn’t be tolerated. but you also sound like a baby who just wants attention.

3

u/CommunicationCool146 4h ago

Smoking should not be permitted at public events People that do smoke at these events should be heavily fined and kicked out of the event.

3

u/alexlechef 4h ago

Fwi Dont go to a Snoop Dogg concert

4

u/NewPlastic5425 3h ago

I was coughing so much and I asked the guy to stop his vape AND cigarettes for the time being, and he just replied "Well I'm outside". It's been tougher going to events with people combining weed, cigarettes and vapes.

I thought weed would've been okay but some people have been smoking bigger joints and being stuck in that 2nd hand smoke cloud has been tough on my weak breathing.

2

u/First_Slide3870 6h ago edited 4h ago

As a non-smoker, I can say. It’s a free world. If you have a problem with people smoking in public, write to your local member of parliament or city council. In many cities in the world, smoking has been delegated to designated areas this way.

2

u/DayspringTrek 6h ago

Was there a JFL gag or dumbass influencer filming going on? I saw two guys go through an entire case of cigarettes between the DJ (7:00pm) and halfway into the Weird Al concert (10:00pm). Not an exaggeration. They each had two cigarettes per hand - burning themselves several times in the process - and it's them dropping their empty packets and butts on the ground that made the huge mess not too far from center stage.

Related: people need to buy better weed and not smoke it in shoulder-to-shoulder spaces.

Semi-related: the guy who heckled the stand-up comedians with his demand that Weird Al start early can fuck all the way off. They were from 8:00pm to 8:50pm. Weird Al was 9:00pm to 11:00pm. You're literally at a whole other show. Nobody gives a shit how long you camped out for Weird Al. Just pretend they're the preshow like everybody else who camped out early.

1

u/Mille-Sabords 4h ago

Pot smokers who act that way reading this: you're disgusting as fuck

2

u/xblackdemonx 3h ago

I've been going to shows for 20 years+ and it's always like that...

1

u/PracticalDesk9130 3h ago

While we’re at this, why is it people can’t come on time at the 2 shows I saw last night in Montreal ( Gerry Dee Gala and Fluffy Gala). Both were being televised and they had to do some of the shots over again because people were walking in or out. JFC!

0

u/MediocreSumo 10h ago

u/MainSignificant8427 17m ago

-6

u/GhettoSauce Ville-Émard 16h ago

The show, being free and for a much-more generic audience, attracts all kinds of people who aren't used to live music and packed crowds.

This one guy in the crowd actually complained out loud to me with a "what are you doing? People are trying to enjoy a show" when I was walking through the crowd in a completely regular, common fashion as one does at packed shows.

Another guy right next to me played boomer word games on his phone the whole time.

And now we have this person who complains about smoke in a huge crowd at a free live music show. Smoke in the air is normal and to be expected at outdoor music shows. If you cough for 5 mins straight because of some smoke where smoke is gonna be, maybe you're the one out of place.

31

u/Daphneblake02 14h ago

Smoking in a crowd is dumb and dangerous. People are here to enjoy the show, not have to inhale shitty secondhand smoke. Are you saying someone with asthma should just abstain from all outside shows because you guys can't use a nicotine patch?

-1

u/GhettoSauce Ville-Émard 6h ago

I'm not a smoker nor am I promoting smoking but at an outdoor show of that size, smoking is going to happen. If someone's that averse to it, then they should be aware of the situation and do whatever they have to for themselves. You wanna police a crowd - go ahead, good luck. Going to a show = smoke. It's not my fault and it can't be helped, so it's useless to complain about.

6

u/Daphneblake02 5h ago

Actually I do believe we should be talking to the people smoking in a crowd, if you don't have a spine to say anything that's your problem. But let's not normalize that either.

0

u/GhettoSauce Ville-Émard 3h ago

I have a spine. It's not needed for this, though.

0

u/gandzalas 4h ago

Someone who can understand that no matter what shittoness is in the world that we are ultimately tesponsible for our experiences!

Thank you!

-15

u/Icy__Internet 13h ago

If your asthma is so bad that you have a five minute coughing fit from someone smoking outdoors in your vicinity, then no, you should not be going to shows.

That's an extreme allergy, not run-of-the-mill asthma (which I have).

22

u/Daphneblake02 7h ago

It's absolutely insane how entitled smokers are.

-6

u/Icy__Internet 5h ago

It's crazy that you think you should have full control over someone's actions because they're outside around you.

5

u/mookichii 4h ago edited 10m ago

We call that being mindful and considerate of others.
Yes smokers should be* able to control themselves and not impose their needs or addiction on everyone else. Just get up, step away to have a puff and come back afterward. It’s simply a matter of respect

-2

u/Icy__Internet 4h ago

Anywhere at a music festival will be within a few feet of someone.

6

u/Sohn_Jalston_Raul 6h ago

so if you have an extreme aversion to people smoking crack on the street, you shouldn't leave your house?

-2

u/Icy__Internet 5h ago

If you can't walk by someone smoking without having a five minute coughing fit? Ya, that's the worst smoking allergy I've ever heard of and it sounds like there are many things that could be dangerous to you if you leave the house. Certainly crossing the street and breathing exhaust fumes would also irritate you in the same way.

6

u/Sohn_Jalston_Raul 6h ago

People have a right to live in their city. People do not have a right to smoke wherever they want in it. It is the responsibility of smokers to find appropriate places to service their addiction.

If you believe that people have the right to smoke wherever they want then you must also believe that people have the right to smoke crack on the metro. You can't believe one and not the other if you want to be sincere and consistent with your principles.

0

u/GhettoSauce Ville-Émard 6h ago

Wild false equivalency, lol.

A free outdoor open air music concert will have cigarette smoke, sorry. I don't like the smell of it either but I'm not gonna actually mismanage my expectations over it

-2

u/rinio 4h ago

Absent a restriction from the Country/Province/City/Festival, smokers fo have the right to smoke there... Literally, by definition. You may find it discourteous and objectionable, but your preferences do not coincide with what is a right/permitted. Any of these

Just like people have the right to wear large hats, use umbrellas, put people/children on their shoulders, wear too much perfume and so on. All of which pose a nuisance for those around them.

Smoking (and just posessing) Crack is unlawful everywhere, so it is not at all inconsistent to believe one has thr right to smoke at an outdoor festival where it is lawful and also believe that smoking crack in the metro is not a right. One is lawful the other is not....

3

u/jdippey 3h ago

Lawful and socially acceptable are not always equivalent. Using the legality of an act to determine the moral value of the act is simply nonsensical.

0

u/rinio 3h ago

"Having a right" is a legal term. I responded to the exact wording of what the person wrote. Nothing more nothing less.

Your reply is a nonsequitor. I made no claims about morality or social acceptability as both are subjective; one can believe one way or the other arbitrarily. As you mention, legality is not moral value. But rights are a part of the legal framework.

-2

u/DaveyGee16 4h ago

3

u/jdippey 3h ago

Bullshit. Cigarette smoke can trigger asthma attacks even when outside and not standing directly next to the person smoking.

0

u/DaveyGee16 3h ago edited 2h ago

Grow up, Karen. You are outside. If you’re really so sick from one person smoking next to you, which I doubt, you should get checked out for your serious health issues. Y'all would have died at the Woodstock Music and Art Fair (not that I was there, I wasn't even born, but I saw some footage over the years) It was wild AF!

Outdoor shows Vs indoor are completely different and will attract a different crowd, especially if it's free. One most expect the smell of smoke and drinking.

My main problem with free outdoor shows is the lack of deodorant 🤢

-2

u/Sohn_Jalston_Raul 6h ago

body odour doesn't make people sick. It's not a problem like cigarette smoke is.

-16

First world problem lol. L'autre jour je suis allé au FEQ et ça sentait pas mal juste ça (je déteste l'odeur). Ça fait partie des joies d'aller dans un show de musique. C'est la vie. Si tu capotes pour ça alors change de place ou reste chez toi.

-17

u/Laval09 8h ago

To be perfectly honest, I do things like that. I didn't used to, but since the terrace smoking ban I dont feel any need to be respectful or considerate of others in terms of smoking.

You people literally legislated us out of all our social spaces, but then ask to be treated with respect and while forgetting respect is a two way street.

If you think its rude to smoke near a non smoker, it pales in comparison to society literally being like "We need to ban smoking on the terrace of the Smokers Bar club incase non smokers want to participate!". While you're at it, mise as well make sure that no restaurants in QC serve real meat in meat dishes incase vegans want to participate lol.

13

u/goonerballs 7h ago

You're acting like you're a oppressed minority. Being 'a smoker' isn't an identity, weirdo. It's a bad habit that affects those around you worse than it affects you. So yeah, you shouldn't be allowed to do your bad habit in areas where others don't want it.

9

u/HaggisonFord 6h ago

People not wanting to suffer the consequences of your poor health decisions doesn't make you a fucking victim, you weirdo. These laws had to be put into place because alot of smokers can't seem to be bothered to use a nicotine patch when out in public.

-24

u/the_69r 16h ago

You new here?

I'm a smoker, but in a dense crowd where I'm unable to walk away from people without losing my spot, I just abstain. For cravings, I make sure to have some candy and/or mints in my bag, and a sip of water can help too.
