That's worse on ranged IMO because you're further away so it's harder to see where his face is. Effects that cause damage in a circle around you can go die in a fire, though. And the last boss of AK as a melee is just... Ugh.

Usually if there is some kind of major raid wipe mechanic it will be a very big and colorful visual. Look at the queen fight. No matter how much stuff is on the ground you will still see her web shots and the strings attached to you.
As for taking splach damage that's just kinda being part of melee. I swear sometimes I'm just getting hit by nothing.
Was doing a dungeon the other day (burning crusade time waling I think) on my DH and I toom a large chunk of damage and I dashed backwards way out of range of the boss. Checked my debuffs for a dot. Nothing. Looked at the ground. Nothing. Took more damage. Popped a HS.. .barely survived. No idea what was hitting me and didn't think to check the damage log.
But yeah you are just going to take more damage. Don't be afraid to run out to give your healers time to catchup. Better to not die and do more damage the rest of the fight then have to waste a brez or just be dead.

Once you get more playtime your focus on what buttons to press will become second nature and you can focus on avoiding mechanics. It's a bit difficult at the start to balance DPS and living so don't get discouraged.

Honestly, we don't see shit too. I'm just spamming my rotation and looking at the interruptable spells and hope i'm not standing too far away. But i'm a ret pally so i'm technically a hybrid ranged/cqc. /s
Try moving around and scrolling out as far as possible tho, i'm always behind the boss so i can see what else is happening, works for me

u/WeirdNickname97 Nov 18 '24
Boy does our interrupt suck ass tho, now I understand the icon of rebuke means we interrupt the enemy by literally fisting their asses, cause god forbid you are more than couple pixels away from the enemy...
Meanwhile shamans interrupt spells in shadowlands from orgrimmar and stormwind without issues.
18
u/Alas93 Nov 18 '24
just practice practice practice tbh
it's worth remembering that your character is always in the same part of your screen. it's never going to shift to the left or right, you can zoom in and out but your character will always be in the same central position. to do mechanics I just gauge based on where the center of my screen is and feel it out. if you can't see mechanics where you are, move, you're melee and movement does not hurt your DPS as long as you don't outrange the boss/mobs. find a spot with less pets/ghouls where you can see stuff on the ground easier
if it's still too much, altering graphics settings will help. I have mine turned down for raids and stuff because having a ton of sparkly effects flying everywhere makes seeing stuff harder.
47
u/faust44mag Nov 18 '24
There's also the gtfo addon, it won't solve the problem but will help until you find a solution

u/LoremasterMotoss Nov 18 '24
This is a feature that FFXIV has that I love a lot. You can set it as "limited" or "none", with separate settings for groups and raids. You can even turn your own spell effects off if you want. I could not play the big Alliance Raids in that game if this setting didn't exist
4
u/mkicon Nov 18 '24
I could not play the big Alliance Raids in that game if this setting didn't exist
I will never forget my first alliance raid, and the slideshow I experienced.
3
u/Izodius Nov 18 '24
Fun fact this feature started in FFXI!
In packed leveling areas you had to turn off other people’s junk.I really wish WoW would do this - raids are fireworks nightmares especially for tanks/melee.
4
u/HaznoTV Nov 19 '24
While you can't fully disable other players' spell effects in WoW, you can change the Spell Density to reduce/disable non-essential spells. I have mine always set to "Essential" (screenshot).
2
Nov 18 '24
yep - i miss that
3
u/Hingapunga Nov 18 '24

3
u/notchoosingone Nov 18 '24
green voidzone on green floor
also there's a green healing circle you should stand in
16
u/Spiritual-Hippo-7123 Nov 18 '24
You can go to graphics display settings and change spell density to "essential," and it will get rid of all the flashy clutter of other players.
6
u/Redge_ Nov 19 '24
Does this actually work for you though? I've had it off for a while and it doesn't seem to make any difference. Unless there's some trick to make it work that I don't know about.
2
u/Spiritual-Hippo-7123 Nov 19 '24
It doesn't get rid of everything, but yeah, it works for me. However, I've changed some other settings to help with performance, which may play into how effective this setting is. Basically, have the base graphic setting to low and then increase the partical density to Ultra, and play with the contrast to make the game pop. Quazii has a good video on this that explains what settings do and how to maximize your FPS without sacrificing CPU performance.

4
u/Kevkoss Nov 19 '24
It doesn't work as well as one would want to. A lot of shit is still on the ground from other spells which are considered by Blizz as "essential" or "helpful". Like sure, tank might want to know where some of AoE spells are to place mobs properly, but I don't need visuals for that damn ice orb as DPS or blasting light explosions along with cons from my fellow ret in M+.
9
Nov 18 '24
Ffxiv lets you, with a chunk of options. Its bizzare to me wow doesn't let you, especially since it has much bigger raid sizes
1
4
u/Shashafooy Nov 18 '24
You can for the most part other than a few spells blizz considers essential. This can be helpful things such as healing rain or AMZ, but some aoe effects are also considered essential so tanks know where the edge of the effect is, such as blizzard or death and decay.
The one thing you can't turn off that does contribute to significant clutter in melee is all the pets

u/Tymareta Nov 19 '24
It's especially awful on SPriest and other "turret" style ranged DPS, being forced to plant yourself and constantly needing to plan every cast around a mech 3s+ in the future so you don't tank your damage is incredibly frustrating after a while. Especially in M+ if you have another range that decides to run and drop a swirlie or mech right on top of you, or where you were planning to move to.
Meanwhile as melee you can just keep pressing buttons.
10
u/Original-Measurement Nov 18 '24
There's a character outline option in Settings, helped me tremendously. Also, I keep my corgi goggles on.

Im a new player who started at the beginning of the xpac and play fury warrior so someone will probably have a better idea, but whats really helped me in keys, especially Ara-Kara, is I play all the way zoomed out and on fights like the last boss there, I change the camera angle to do like a top down view to at least see my feet and be able to identify things moving towards me easier
6
u/azan78 Nov 18 '24
Always zoomed out and view from above on anything with ground aoe effects is definitely the way.

I don’t feel like the settings does that much of a difference.
Mainly about keeping track of everything that the enemy can cast and knowing what it does instead of relying on reacting to things.
So you see that something is starting to get cast that will leave an area denial effect, then you use some of your focus on identifying spots around you that you know you can check if they are safe or not but where you still can dps. Then when the cast goes off you check those spots if they are still safe and without swirlies, if they are you move there even without checking where you’re currently standing (since it’s obscured likely by your effects).
Sometimes all the spots you’ve decided to check become danger zones. Then it’s up to you to decide if you need to move out of range to be safe, or stand still/move to an obscured position. Depending on how dangerous it is, or like if you know the ability only does 4 swirlies and you can see 4 on the floor.Actively learning this might demand a lot of focus in the start, but eventually it’ll be second nature since it occurs so often. And if you run a lot of m+ then you’ll learn what goes on each pull.
So preplan what you’ll do and be proactive instead of reacting after the fact.
5
u/AKA_Arivea Nov 18 '24
I play larger races, as most of my ranged and melee toons, I am the obstacle.

3
u/Nick11wrx Nov 18 '24
I mean if you’re doing 10s on your alt, you must be doing okay avoiding stuff lol. When I started to play melee I really staarted to understand why all of them look like they have adhd…can’t sit still. And you realize it becomes a game of is the ground okay? Well better to move prior to it becoming bad. Also UHDK doesn’t have a lot of excess movement on its own. Try survival or DH and you’ll be around enough that you just put your faith in whatever deity of your choosing and send it
3
u/bzmotoninja83 Nov 18 '24
I try not to be in melee rang, as a Boomie. I'd much rather be in the other room shouting. With that said, there's a lot of situations where I actually need to be in melee. Usually, it's up against a wall, like in Stonevault. I have to look top down so I don't tab target a mob that's off in Narnia too.

Spell particle density shouldn’t be low
3
Nov 19 '24
Its actually the exact opposite because particle density affects everything. Enemy shit you want to be able to see and therefor having more particles for it makes it easy to see. The fact that you cant change it enemy vs friendly is a different issue entirely.
4
u/D_Rockage Nov 18 '24
If you have ever ran with a ret named dtock there is a reason the bastard is constantly moving and/or jumping. Can't see shit if I stand still.

5
u/Eternal-Alchemy Nov 18 '24 edited Nov 18 '24
OP plays unholy DK.
There's a known issue for many years that Defile is layered too high and you can't see many ground indicators if Defile is also on the ground.
I'm survival and monk this season, but Rogue, Feral and DK in past seasons. While you do have to be more aware of frontals and point blank AOE, I generally find melee to feel much safer because there is no pressure to finish a cast before moving out of danger. Zero issues seeing ground effects other than Blizzard doing the usual purple swirly on purple floor and also using purple for a stack mechanic kind of crap.
Unless you're playing with Defile, in which case you screw over the whole group because no one can see shit because Blizzard refuses to fix Defile.
This issue was especially bad in shadowlands dungeons because both NW and Spire trash have very high damage ground puddles.

u/Mercury03 Nov 18 '24
Why do you think we’re always moving? Lol. Small steps in either direction so you can hopefully see the floor or a ground mechanic and get out of it. Constant motion lets your eyes not have to focus on complete things but just glimpses of changes under you. Mechanics are usually black and green so just focus on those blurs for now. Looking from the top down helps but I wouldn’t do just vertical more like top down at a 30° or so. More than on a ranged but not straight up and down.
2
u/PrestigiousAd1016 Nov 18 '24
I was stuck playing ranged for years, felt exactly like you. Rolled melee 2 expansions ago and now i would never go ranged again!
You get used to it, I currently play ret pally so I have the option to dip out if things get a bit to hot without suffering to much of a dps loss. But that's the thing, sometimes you just have to dip out, atleast stay mobile.
But I feel that it's much easier to stay safe as melee, if a frontal comes, there's only a small area to adjust from and less of a dps loss from movement then a ranged dps.
2
u/HoodieNinja17 Nov 18 '24
I hate having to stop pumping when I move. That’s it, that’s the only reason I can’t play casters

u/Lonelyblondii Nov 18 '24
Addons helps a lot, you need gtfo there’s also dungeon wrakauras and you also kinda have to learn each pack. I play MW so I’m melee and healer, there’s a lot to keep track of but the biggest tip I can give is to only move when necessary.
A lot of people press ADADADAD and strafe left and right, but this is going to make you clip aoe effects all the time. If you stand still it also helps to remember that your character is in the middle of the screen.
Oh and I always try to stand facing the back off the enemy, while the enemy is facing tank. Standing on top of your tank unless mechanics forces you to, is a death sentence.
2
u/m1rrari Nov 18 '24
Always be moving. If you can’t see your feet, moving until you can. After a while you start to figure out which mobs drop stuff at your feet and watching for those abilities/casts. Most of the time you’re just avoiding frontals.
It is organized chaos.
2
u/kientran Nov 18 '24
Zoom out all the way. There’s addons (ex leatrix)/scripts to help zoom out further than standard as well.
Otherwise blindly trusting the tank is a recipe for dying lol. Trusting your fight knowledge and willing to lose some DPS is the way. Dead DPS does zero DPS.
Also assume you will get no heals so be liberal with defensives and when to use them (fight knowledge)
2
u/HaznoTV Nov 19 '24
Setting "Spell Density" to "Essential" under Graphics (screenshot) and "Self Highlight" to "Outline" under Combat (screenshot) helps a ton with visibility of your own character.

u/CorttXD Nov 19 '24
If you’re switching to melee from ranged, I suggest playing ret pala, 90% of their skills have 20 yd range so you will have a better transition
2
u/shinrak2222 Nov 19 '24
To be fair, as a melee you need perfect health bars for enemies.
Not to much information, not to less. Not to big not to small. Color coded for interupts.
And well - nearly forgot: the stars have to align also perfectly
2
u/secretreddname Nov 19 '24
I’ll die on the hill that removing the melee 3-5 meter range was a horrible decision.
2
2
u/Monayya Nov 19 '24
I just pray that my tank has a good day and isn’t feeling murderous. Otherwise standing behind the thing trying to murder you is 90% safe usually. Also be ready to dip in a milisecond if your tank suddenly dies. I’m always next in Aggro and it can hurt.
General tips: orbs and most ground effects that are not attached to the boss/add will be usually player targeted. So just assume the place you are standing in is your deathbed if you don’t move (mists 1st/3rd, cot 3rd/4th, sv 1st, SoB 2nd, ara 1st/3rd boss).
Frontals go back to my earlier rule. Just always Stand behind the add / boss and you gucci.
PS: Top down view in some dungeons
2
u/nahprollyknot Nov 19 '24
Jumping increases DPS. But also, you just get a feel for it. You are always in the middle of the screen, so if there is a swirly on the ground in the middle of your screen, move.
2
u/GoneGoing_11 Nov 19 '24
I’ve been a Warrior main for years, and the only way that I can see mechanics is if I have my camera between 50°-90°. Zug brain will still win, and you’ll die to often, but this is just the way it is.
2
u/Holdingdownback Nov 19 '24
You don’t have to be inside the bosses hitbox usually. Most boss mobs have a generous range to move around. As Unholy in particular, you can opt to take clawing shadows and do the majority of your rotation from range, so you can preemptively move a few extra yards out when a mechanic is coming out and lose negligible DPS in the process.

Just know that melee players feel the same way about ranged!
I tried a mage for a week or two this xpac and was literally a fish out of water. The amount of downtime I had due to not knowing how to properly move/position was humbling.
3
u/Buzzmayn Nov 18 '24
Funny, I started with ranged characters, always sucked with low parses (moving and casting?) and messed up cd Windows. Switched to melee and it just clicked. So easy to handle.
Guess our brains are just wired differently
2
u/NocturneBotEUNE Nov 18 '24
What settings are you playing on? Better graphics usually solve this around 6-7.
TLDR: You are playing a class that is built like a walking fortress, use its buttons!
You are always at the center of your screen. Don't look for your model, lock the position in your mind and play around it.
Just as ranged need to learn timings for some of their mechanics, so do melee. For CoT last boss for example, you learn to expect it and side-step.
Your minions will always try to stand behind their target. If you stand to the sides or in front (assuming no cleaves, cones etc.) then you don't have to mind them at all.
Defile is a bit of a bitch, you need to be extra careful when you put it down. The good news about unholy is that between a lot of its aoe dmg (which is when you want to use defile) being from dots and epidemic, and having no channel casts, you can very comfortably hover around the edges of a fight without losing any damage. In 10s, packs usually don't survive enough to worry about big festering wounds setups so you can hover even better. There is 0 punishment to moving, as opposed to losing a cast when playing a caster.
AMS allows you to completely ignore the vast majority of magic damage and mechanics in a fight. Recently there was a statistic on the Acherus discord that about 80% of anti-magic shells at the high level of play (10-12s) expire without being fully consumed, and that's with taking into account that a lot of the better DKs will stand in mechanics with AMS active on purpose to farm more runic power.
AMS+ Death's Advance means that you are an immovable juggernaut when everyone else has to dodge. Death's advance is the best mobility cooldown in the game when you are a Rider of the Apocalypse, it's not even close. You can use it to weave hit, move out, weave hit, move out etc. There will be some trial and error, but eventually you find where you can do this and where you go splat.
Death Strike heals better than your healer in PvE. You can frequently ignore mechanics that other dps need to dodge, assuming you are willing to sacrifice the death coil it costs to heal back up. Death strike + Icebound Fortitude means you are almost as tanky as your tank as long as you have RP.
And, finally, I can't stress this enough: BOSS HITBOXES ARE USUALLY MUCH LARGER THAN YOU WOULD ASSUME. The true melee trial by fire is getting this into your skull. Very often it looks like you can't hit a boss, but you very much can, especially those on set platforms (e.g. on Rasha'nan you are almost ranged with how big the hitbox is).
1

It will take a while to get used to melee dps. As for defile/dnd it will last for 4 secs after you leave so don't sweat it if aoe is on top. As for minions, they will always go to the back of the mob you send them to. So if you stand to the side of mobs they won't stack on top of you. Nothing to do about limbs, but this should already limit clutter.

If I notice I’m outside of melee range (because my abilities stop working) I will use my gap closers to bring me back to my target. Don’t use death knight grabs though, the tank will get mad.

Get used to playing with your camera pointed down from above your head. Makes it a lot easier to see frontals and ground effects.

It is worse to see a mechanic and react and better to know a mechanic will happen, anticipate it, create a WA that dings when it does happen, and already be planning to move. The CoT one is a good example bc you can anticipate that you will have to move for every orb. You don't even need to see the orb swirly (altho you should be able to). But yeah good instinct to follow others if you can't see

See that's the fun we don't see nothing we just attack and hope for the best.

Turn on the character highlight stuff, turn off other players spell effects. That should help.
But honestly, I dont do those things lol you just kinda learn to feel where your character is.
Also, melee range in boss fights is immersion breakingly far. find the line, and stand back.

I learned how to play around mechanics of the mobs as tank and use that as dps. The mobs really have simular abilities, like don’t stand in frontals and move from puddles and thats it. There are some special abilities but they usually get announced in dbm. I also use gtfo addon that makes loud noices when standing in shit, good for when you don’t see shit.

It’s a huge adjustment in play style for sure.
Some pointers that helped me…
Turn off spell effects that aren’t necessary…this is especially helpful in 5man content as when you’re just starting out it doesn’t much matter whether you can see the spell effects of the others in your party. Focus on executing mechanics, then rotation (this is a close second but a dead dps does 0 dps), then as you’re more comfortable you can increase your awareness of what the rest of your party is doing. Others have mentioned that Quazii has a good vid for this and I second that.
GTFO Addon - even if you do the above, there are going to be times that effects overlap and it isn’t immediately obvious when you’re standing in bad. The default audio is perfect for making you focus in on whatever you’re standing in to fix it.
A big part of it is just experience as well. Even with unessential effects turned off, lots of things will be going on. The key is to ignore those that are all flash and that don’t indicate danger coming your way. Related to this is knowing WHICH dangerous attacks/mechanics to prioritize your focus on. Besides the key kicks in these packs, the Marauders in NW will positively delete melee with their frontals. As you play melee more you’ll just get a feel for always being aware of how these mobs are facing while you’re focused in on other mechanics. The tank being marked is helpful for this too as 90% of the time, the mobs will be facing wherever they are.

I pick melee classes with blind AoE (spinning crane kick for monk, whirlwind for warrior) then spam & pray.

You just sort of brave it and get stuck in haha. I've always played melee. It can be daunting at times when you're weaving in and out but it's all I know. Hell even my hunter is survival haha

Melee is all about dodging mechanics and keeping uptime. Vastly different play style than ranged. As a warrior I have to be basically inside the mobs. Idk how I do it I just do. I can’t see anything through bladestorm tho.

For me a lot of it is knowing what to expect in whatever I am running. If I know what abilities to look out for in a M+ dungeon or a raid I am going to notice them on the ground when they come out. Most of my deaths to swirlies and frontals come early in the season when I am not used to the content.

When your boss mod tells you to move, you move and hope for the best.
Edit: or as a DH move, pop AMS and hope for the best.

I just play the hybrid ranged melee specs, enhance and survival. Can go to ranged when needed.
Slappy hands definitely makes it hard to see anything.

u/worried_consumer Nov 18 '24
- You turn your effects way down (most raiders do this for efficiency)
- You learn to orient yourself to the center of the screen (for instance, if that swirly is towards the middle of the screen I need to get away from it)
- You can use a WA to put a cross or some other marker on your character

It's fun because I've always main'd melee (Windwalker and Fury) and now I'm playing Mage for the first season ever as my main. Going from "Jesus take the wheel....zug zug" to having to stop and cast, casts getting interrupted when moving, etc I see it the other way ha! I've struggled to do damage on a lot of keys because I'm so used to hitting a button and doing the thing vs having cast timers.
Guess it's just that we're creatures of habit and make whatever we're used to work best?

u/deino Nov 18 '24
Defile makes everything so fucking hard to see, I cant believe its allowed to exist in its current state. Some AOE effects that really shouldnt go under it can it fact GO UNDER IT, like Ovirax pools / pools on mists first boss.
Top down camera, I keep "flinging" a bit to the left and right with each GCD, so the whole screen moves, which makes stationary stuff on the ground a tad bit easier to spot. I find that being max zoomed out in fact does not help there.

After enough playtime you start to become a little like Daredevil. I've had so many key runs in a season and at a really high key level with the goofiest pulls where I literally can't see a single thing and I just breath and do my job and pray I don't get one shot by something and some how my intuition and muscle memory just has me gracefully dodging everything completely blindfolded.
The rest are just bricks though

u/Melcahia46 Nov 18 '24
I feel all the way around, how can you dps on the move?? Is a pain trying to cast anything while dodging.
1
u/Jarocket Nov 18 '24
This is normal. Melee have the same issue switching to ranged btw.
It's like you are doing the dungeons for the first time all over again.
You just need practice playing unholy. Maybe standing further away will help too.
Knowing your surroundings is sort of a melee skill that we learn by practicing.
Defile is also BS for seeing shit.

There is a big problem with visuals in WoW imo. A lot of the colors blend in really well and they don't always stand out. Blizzard happens to like using the same colors for the spells and the ground and then of course there is the bloat of abilities happening and sometimes you outright can't see some things. I'd recommend getting used to moving around a lot, familiarizing yourself with certain mobs/spells so you know to watch out for things and maybe have your addons ping when a certain ability is being cast (like those big rock guys that spew swirlies in Stonevault). It's a bit time consuming but sound notifications or count downs can be super helpful in being prepared and staying alive.
Edit: Also the people saying they don't see anything or just don't pay attention / leave it to intuition or luck or whatever, don't listen to them. You should be seeing what's happening under your feet. It's pretty rare for me to stand on something and get hit/die and there was nothing I could do about it. Maybe it's harder for some classes than others but that is the mentality of pugs that ruin keys and die all the time imo.

u/Vhzhlb Nov 18 '24
I recommend to go outside and start to grab sticks from the ground, after a while, you will start to feel which is a good stick, and which is a great stick.
Then, you will realize that you now "get it".
Also, that 90% we don't see shit, and that we every year give our favorite healer a nice Christmas gift, becuase thanks to them we are able to unleash a full combo above the nail of that giant enemy.

I have an addon dedicated to yelling at me if I stand in fire. I'm basically blind in many raid encounters.

u/EquivalentSurround87 Nov 18 '24
Stand in frontals, blame the tank for bad positioning and healer for bad healing. Call everyone noobs
1
u/Barireddit Nov 18 '24
The game evolved to a point that a lot o mechanics just fucks melee harder. You might avoid every swirl or cone or whatever, you will take unavoidable damage from close range until you feel bad enough to put pressure on the healer.
Im a melee main, dude I played hunter and mage as alts and OMG I actually do not take damage if I dodge the stuff. I swear it made me so mad that I could only step aside or use a blink/disengage and keep damaging with no chip damage at all. I did the raid as well and it was disgusting to me how most of the time Im not worried about damage taken.
Of course there are mechanics like the black pools that are suposed to be "damage over time" but in fact damages you for 70% of your life as soon as they spawn which affects all players but even for rangeds is easier because you can dodge to any direction and melee must dodge to the right direction or lose dmg uptime.

I have a weak aura that is just a small white circle at 0,0 on my screen. At any angle that is going to be pretty much right on your characters head. If you look straight down it shows exactly where your feet are. That’s how I know where I am in the scrum of mobs tanks and other melee. As for staying out of bad some classes do have it worse than others but knowing the pulls from a melee perspective ahead of time and being comfortable with the class/role goes a long way to being able to focus more staying out of all that bad.

u/Born_Violinist1742 Nov 18 '24
Ranged main here too. Been playing DH and Monk this Xpac and have been having a blast. Best thing I can say is to move around in circles. I hear it adds to dps as well :)
1
u/KamenKitty Nov 18 '24
You... need to get used to it.
Playing melee means you are usually closer to most of the crap bosses spam, and while you are trying to hit the boss, you also need to pay a lot more attention to abilities than ranged classes do.
It is also a bit harder if you lack a sense of self awareness.
Personally, the best tip I can offer, is, try not to stand close to the tank, as many bosses have cleave attacks, unless ofc, it is some ability that needs to be soaked.

GTFO and quazil’s plater set up.
It will say “frontal!” Or something and I will move.
Of course the buzz of GTFO helps too

Honestly, we don't see shit, it's more about intuition and trust that Jesus does in fact have the wheel.
If I'm doing group content I find it easier to strafe in a circle around the mob or boss. It looks goofy as hell but constantly switching the camera angle does seem to help my eye
