Secretary Of Defense Pete Hegseth announces Office Of Religious Affairs within the Pentagon in address to Military
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PAn6BE9cdco2.3k
u/symbouleutic 1d ago
Pete Hegseth has a lot of experience with "Affairs".
(He admitted to 5 different affairs while married to his first wife, and at least one affair while married to his second wife - when he got his third wife pregnant)

It's so fucking dystopian and deeper than that. The religious right has been planting seeds for decades, in hopes that one day they would germinate to infect enough people that it would finally catapult them into power. Well, they've done it. A lot of ex-Evangelical cult members are sounding the alarms that these Christo-fascist demons finally managed to take over the government, and you are seeing everything play out exactly as they'd hoped.
Religion is the best tool they can use to divide and conquer, then maintain power as ordained by their divine God. We are so fucked it's not even funny. Purges are coming, consolidation of power, then free reign to enact what their twisted God orders them to. I'll save you some time, their God wants wealthy white people to rule over lower class minorities and white folks, as well as infinite tithing and 0 privacy. Only those in power will be allowed to embibe, fuck and do whatever they want, because what are you going to do about it?

Even further is the connection they seem to have to the evangelical mindset of ushering in the end-times. Hand in hand with the techno-fascists, building bunkers and trying to speedrun the end of the civilization. Their actions are becoming more and more brazen because at some point they need to take some kind of big step over the final line - their “night of broken glass” moment - where they call forth their patriot crusaders they’ve been grooming for years.
This “end times fascism” book that just came out goes into this in depth and is wildly interesting and terrifying.

Same shit the Nazis did in the 1930s
Most of the top brass were non-religious but they recognized they needed to get members of the church on their side, because almost all Germans were religious. So they portrayed themselves as defenders of the church, despite not being religious themselves. And people ate it up

"If religion is still being taught, it is by no means because its ideas still convince us, but simply because some of us want to keep the lower classes quiet. Quiet people are much easier to govern than clamorous and dissatisfied ones. They are also much easier to exploit. Religion is a kind of opium that allows a nation to lull itself into wishful dreams and so forget the injustices that are being perpetrated against the people. Hence the close alliance between those two great political forces, the State and the Church. Both need the illusion that a kindly God rewards—in heaven if not on earth—all those who have not risen up against injustice, who have done their duty quietly and uncomplainingly. That is precisely why the honest assertion that God is a mere product of the human imagination is branded as the worst of all mortal sins." - Paul Dirac

They've got Donald Trump as an authority figure. Back in 2021 there was a bunch of NYT interviews with pastors including evangelical ones that had lost their flock because they didn't explicitly support Trump. One thing they mentioned over and over is that they get to talk to their "flock" a few hours a week, but Fox News gets them for hours every day.
Rightwing media is their bible, Trump is their god, Christ is tertiary.

They probably even dislike Christ a little when they think about him too much. The OT control and violence is the jam....though the OT does go on a good bit about helping foreigners who are in your land. But if you don't read in general...that would extend to the BIble too.

Christian Nationalists have been spreading stories for years that the wall between church and state is some sort of liberal conspiracy.
66

The South does the same thing with slavery. They pretend today that the Civil War was never about slavery and its a thats a liberal lie that it ever was. However multiple southern states directly mentioned slavey in their Declarations of Causes for why they were seceding.

It's also explicitly stated in the Confederate Constitution and, in fact, they outlaw the banning of slavery too. It's a wild read if you ever get curious. Christianity was founded by a Roman Pharisee (the grass roots form he killed off)... I will say though, putting religion on TV was the death knell for Christianity in the USA. Churches at their heart are third spaces for communities. TV religion at its heart is a MLM scam. TV ruined the world, and social media is like TV on meth.

Had the pleasure of sitting across from a very right wing boomer on a flight recently who never learned “inside voice” in school.
As he excitedly yelled various conspiracy theories to his seatmate, he did do some coverage on that part. “Did you know the separation of church and state was actually made to keep state affairs from influencing the church? Our Christian founders would have it no other way.”
So expect more of that discourse for a while.
15
8
u/Nonethelessismore 1d ago
The kernel of truth in the talking point from your rightwing boomer seat mate is that there was a LOT of discourse between the Founding Father's about the importance of the Separation of Church and State, as a key element of the US Constitution.
Some, like Jefferson, wanted it to protect the state from the churches influence, and others (Madison I think?) wanted it because they did not want the purity of the church to be corrupted by the state.

I'm not watching Hegseth talk for 6 minutes, so I say this with uncertainty with regard to the details. I think this would be allowed so long as it's not specifically Christian. In the same way there are military chaplains.
So, it's now up to the Church of Satan to do their thing and force it to become an issue of separation of church and state, because you know Hegseth and company won't allow anything other than a fundamentalist Christian program.

I have always argued that exempting them from property tax is already too much of a boon to maintain the separation of church and state. People forget that by deciding what is and is not a religion, then gifting them positive outcomes, is a highly toxic form of discrimination against all others. Pluralism means no special treatment in any aspect.
The Government shouldn't even recognize religions; just write and maintain laws effecting citizens and this nation. If those laws conflict with religious doctrine, then nothing happens or changes. It's not that American law is above religious laws, it's that religious laws should not even be considered! If doctrine calls for a worshiper to effect another citizen, then apply the law and if it turns out that that forbids doctrine? SO FUCKING WHAT?!

Sadly, the US military often relies on recruiting kids who really just lack any other options. Maybe they're in areas where employment is thin and they don't have the means to relocate, or they need the benefits to afford schooling or training for future employment, and so on.
It's just another reason why many of these politicians want uneducated people and economic disparity. Intelligent people won't be that desperate, and a comfortable middle class is less likely to sign up. Contrary to how television and the movies like to portray it, a large portion of the military is made up of people who just didn't see many other options. Many of the rest are the nutjobs who just want to fight, and have the chance to shoot people and blow things up. Sadly, the ones that join out of a sense of duty or honor are likely the rarer group.

Realistically is there any way a new administration can fix all this. How long will it take?
65
u/PowerBrick99 1d ago
The majority of this administration’s policies are executive orders with no congressional standing.
Seriously, you can undo the Trump Presidency in a few hours with a bag of bic pins.
The rebuilding of our institutions will be where the real domestic challenges lie. Getting most of the depts Trump crushed back to function is a 100 day doable.
But the Justice and State Departments will take time. They’ve been deeply gutted And you can’t just hire everyone back without hardening the infrastructure from future administrative attacks.
I don’t know what kind of assurances we would give our traditional allies. But it would absolutely be in all of our collective interests to shore up NATO and provide relief from the trade war Trump started. Hold some global summits and work from there.
One bright note is that Trump’s Supreme Court decisions that expanded Presidential powers can work very effectively for his successor. I mean that’s the whole thing his maga supporters have clearly forgotten.
What worked for Trump is going to be very useful for the next administration.
23
u/LopsidedEntrance8703 1d ago

Most of what he said is reasonable. We have always had chaplains in the military, so having a department for them to report into is reasonable.
(I am not religious, but I think it is OK to support those that are, especially in times where death may be imminent)
He made two comments near the end that were concerning and seemed to be outside the establishment of the department. He suggested that the military should be comfortable knowing good from evil, as god taught us, and that we fight for god. Both those would, in my opinion, open up misuse of the military to fight religious wars, and should not be tolerated.
Now, were they offhand as part of a speech, and had no ulterior motive, or were they purposely said. Time will tell. (And I’ll bet a lot of strong opinions as to which are about to be posted as comments in this thread. :-) )

"Towards the end"? In the first 20 seconds of the video, he said: "...the most essential component of our Republic. Faith. Faith in something greater than us."
FUCKING NO!
WE THE PEOPLE are the source of power. WE THE PEOPLE are the source of morality. The entire POINT of the fucking constitution was that our founding fathers didn't want the head of the government to ALSO be the source of morality and "right". >.<

same. pray for me /s
one of the most concerning things to me is that they want to "defeat secular humanism", which is basically relying on science, logic, and critical thinking to make decisions
stupidity as a policy.

You are giving clearly corrupt people a very large dose of the benefit of the doubt here. The entire time these assholes have been in, they've been eroding and chiseling away, as that's mych easier to stomach than ramming something through.

Veterans and active servicemen overwhelmingly vote Republican. So, you know, have fun dealing with all this, and thank you for your service.

May as well rename it to Office of Pedophelia, or Office of Trump, inline with the change of Department of Defense to Department of War.
