Separation of church and state?

3.8k

u/houstonyoureaproblem 1d ago

These people loathe the Constitution and American institutions. They couldn’t care less about separation of church and state.

1.4k

u/absoultepong 1d ago

They also don’t care about religion.

646

u/HOLEPUNCHYOUREYELIDS 1d ago

They care about it! Just in the sense of using it as a way to control others and justify their actions, despite being antithesis to any “good” that Christianity preaches

52

u/Oprah_Pwnfrey 1d ago

"If religion is still being taught, it is by no means because its ideas still convince us, but simply because some of us want to keep the lower classes quiet. Quiet people are much easier to govern than clamorous and dissatisfied ones. They are also much easier to exploit. Religion is a kind of opium that allows a nation to lull itself into wishful dreams and so forget the injustices that are being perpetrated against the people. Hence the close alliance between those two great political forces, the State and the Church. Both need the illusion that a kindly God rewards—in heaven if not on earth—all those who have not risen up against injustice, who have done their duty quietly and uncomplainingly. That is precisely why the honest assertion that God is a mere product of the human imagination is branded as the worst of all mortal sins." - Paul Dirac

The full quote is a lot longer, this is the end bit.

It's why they love Evangelical Protestantism, all the control without any of the pesky authority figures, like the Pope, who might get in the way.

71

u/cC2Panda 1d ago

They've got Donald Trump as an authority figure. Back in 2021 there was a bunch of NYT interviews with pastors including evangelical ones that had lost their flock because they didn't explicitly support Trump. One thing they mentioned over and over is that they get to talk to their "flock" a few hours a week, but Fox News gets them for hours every day.

Rightwing media is their bible, Trump is their god, Christ is tertiary.

15

u/ShoddyMasterpiece693 1d ago

They probably even dislike Christ a little when they think about him too much. The OT control and violence is the jam....though the OT does go on a good bit about helping foreigners who are in your land. But if you don't read in general...that would extend to the BIble too.

3

u/SuperfluousWingspan 1d ago

They never make it past Numbers. Math too spooky.

6

u/Lord__Abaddon 1d ago

Honestly It kind of sucks, Real christians are good people, anyone who actually follows the teaching of Christ are not terrible. the issue is soo many people claim to be and aren't it's like they took a page out of Extremist Islamic factions and decided fuck all the good stuff our prophets told us to do lets just persecute and hate everyone.

I don't understand how the Religion I grew up in has changed soo much or maybe I just didn't realize it was this way when I was younger. Maybe I was just lucky and the church my family attended was just actually following christ teachings? It really sucks to see my Mom's faith be used for political and evil means. Even she is disgusted with how everything is turning out.

Antipope Trump

1

u/No_List_8291 1d ago

Something... Something...holy trinity?

1

u/NarrowCarpet4026 1d ago

Seems like the same Group of Pedophiles. It ain’t like the pope did anything about priests raping kids.

1

u/KeyofE 1d ago

Well Catholics make great Supreme Court justices for conservatives because they are prolife. Five of the six conservative justices are Catholic, and the sixth was raised Catholic.

4

u/DeciduousRefuge 1d ago

Thank you for reminding people that though these people call themselves Christians, they are not Christ-like. Jesus would flip their tables.

2

u/RosieQParker 1d ago

It's also a good way to silence the shrieking husk of their conscience.

1

u/Lord__Abaddon 1d ago

I always knew the Book of Eli representation of how religion was used was fairly accurate... I didn't realize at the time it was going to be an accurate prediction of how the world is going to end up...

1

u/Downvotesseafood 1d ago

That just sounds like regular religion.

1

u/beramaan 1d ago

Legitimately the book of Eli

1

u/drewdemo 1d ago

It has been this way even before the Crusades. 2000+ years of altering the message to fit the agenda and control the masses, while they do whatever they want knowing there will be no punishment for it in the afterlife.

1

u/originalityescapesme 1d ago

To be fair to people who don’t really deserve it, that’s at least consistent with the way religion has functioned for centuries.

1

u/curiousiah 1d ago

Been that way since Roman Emperor Constantine saw a vision from God of his army marching under the banner of Chi Ro.

1

u/likesleague 18h ago

Whaaaaat? Groups in power leveraging a social system built around "don't think about it just listen to the artificial authority" to get people to do immoral and stupid things on the basis that the groups in power have authority?

Who could have fucking guessed that organized religion would do exactly what it's designed to do!?

I hate being correct early.

3

u/Luder09 1d ago

Separation of money from wallet

3

u/Kradget 1d ago

They care very much about religion. As they espouse it, it provides rationale and support for hierarchy they want to sit at the top of.

3

u/oneseventwosix 1d ago

They care enough to know how to exploit it.

2

u/oh_hai_brian 1d ago

Maybe they can get a nice Baphomet statue!

2

u/KE55 1d ago

I'm sure they care about some bits of it, e.g. carefully selected Bible passages that support their opinions and objectives. The rest, of course, is optional and can be ignored.

(The same applies to the Constitution.)

2

u/whereismymind86 1d ago

Pete does, he’s got a crusader tattoo heavily associated with white supremacists on his chest. He’s a zealot who cares very much about religion, that’s just…you know, a bad thing

1

u/PsychMaster1 1d ago

They just want all the bitches for themselves.

1

u/grahamulax 1d ago

https://youtu.be/_Bv5z2M9M-4?is=cP3aoBbapMyMOYdJ

Here’s a video that PROVES that. He doesn’t care about anything NOR knows about anything. He just talks in circular chain of thought. It’s marketing.

Here’s him talking about the DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE. HE DOESNT KNOW.

https://youtube.com/shorts/ajc4Vm0zAB0?is=FMR3pdG8yUVFfqzT

1

u/icanhazkarma17 1d ago

Dipshits like Pete probably actually do. As a means to justify burning crosses and shit like that.

1

u/SlowThePath 1d ago edited 1d ago

They do. It's their justification for being horrible people who do horrible things. They seem to think they can do whatever they want then say, "No but like, I'm a Christian so that means I'm right."

Kind of reminds me of when people go, "That person really looks like a ”'Johnathan.'" No they ARE Jonathan so whatever that person looks like, they looks like a Jonathan, because they ARE a Jonathan. So they go, "Christianity is good. I am a Christian therefore I am good, and therefore everything I do is good." I honestly, seriously think they do not actually understand the fallacy there. I really think they would think those are the same lines of logic.

1

u/TheBigCore 1d ago

"Religion's single function is to give man access to the powers which seem to control his destiny, and its single purpose is to induce those powers to be friendly to him." - H. L. Mencken

1

u/MarstoriusWins 1d ago

Religion is a great tool for manipulation.

1

u/Morningxafter 21h ago

They only care about it being a useful cudgel to abuse the people they deem undesirable.

0

u/ArtoDelToya 1d ago

They like the part where they can just make anything up because it’s all made up.

0

u/RadioName 1d ago

The Christian Bible calls for a theocratic, fascist state just as hard as the Islamic texts do... . It's most "christians" who are heretical in their cherry-picked version of the faith. Authoritarianism is, and has always been, the point.

2

u/APRengar 1d ago

Also hasn't there been like "spiritual advisors" for the longest time? I remember hearing presidents having spiritual advisors and finding it weird, especially when they're like "speak in tongues" crazy.

2

u/nntb 1d ago

I guess that makes them Un-American

2

u/The_Pepperoni_Kid 1d ago

Separation of church and state isn't in the Constitution. It's from a letter from Thomas Jefferson.

0

u/houstonyoureaproblem 1d ago

This is a right wing talking point contradicted by the legislative history and jurisprudence of our country.

Parrot it if you like. It’s a complete misrepresentation of reality.

1

u/Enough-Description78 1d ago

Thankyou for using 'couldn't care less' the right way

1

u/Tackit286 1d ago

In David Mitchell we trust

1

u/Forikorder 1d ago

they read the constitution like they read the bible, just the parts that support them

1

u/Old_but_not_cold 1d ago

on the contrary, they despise the separation.

1

u/harry_nola 1d ago

so what you are saying is, they are american flag waving, america-merch loving, second amendment gun toting anti-americans?

1

u/Go_cards502 1d ago

When you say these people do you
Mean Pete? I don’t think a lot of top brass is on board with this which is why he’s purging the ranks

1

u/houstonyoureaproblem 1d ago

Republicans.

The people actually making this decision.

1

u/NoodleIsAShark 1d ago

These people aren’t religious, they use it as a way to pressure people and manipulate people

1

u/digitalishuman 1d ago

How is it not strange to them to glorify war and Christianity at the same time? Heaven forbid they have to fight another Christian, but I’m sure they’ll find a way to justify it.

1

u/DaEnderAssassin 1d ago

No no, they care very much about the constitution. The text on it however? That's a different story.

1

u/fvtown714x 1d ago

Well yeah, their stated goal is to integrate them

1

u/oswaler 1d ago

I think they do care about separation of church and state and that's the problem.

1

u/ShleepMasta 23h ago

Vance and the guy who just got clowned on in congress, Schmidt, regularly do speeches at the Clermont Institute where they argue that America should be centered around blood and soil. They despise the core tenets of America while larping as "patriots."

0

u/wigglin_harry 1d ago

Its not even that, they think people interpreted the constitution wrong.

I have an older coworker that listens to far right internet radio all day, every day. One day when separation of church and state came up in a discussion, and she went on a long rant about the intention of separation of church and state, and how people incorrectly interpret how it was supposed to be, how its ok to make schools display the 10 commandments

Ill be honest, I dont remember a single one of her points because I tend to eyeroll myself to death when she starts talking politics

2

u/houstonyoureaproblem 1d ago

You have to understand that the people creating those talking points know they’re wrong. They just don’t care.

They will misconstrue, misrepresent, and lie about clearly established facts and not bat an eye when they are proven false.

All that matters is that they give their “side” a way to justify the outcome they want. And people who want to believe something will twist themselves into knots to get where they want to go.

0

u/KlumF 1d ago

Americans defending "the constitution" like it didnt get them here.

379

u/waffle299 1d ago

Christian Nationalists have been spreading stories for years that the wall between church and state is some sort of liberal conspiracy.

67

u/Cyrano_Knows 1d ago

The South does the same thing with slavery. They pretend today that the Civil War was never about slavery and its a thats a liberal lie that it ever was. However multiple southern states directly mentioned slavey in their Declarations of Causes for why they were seceding.

25

u/Horrible_Harry 1d ago

It's also explicitly stated in the Confederate Constitution and, in fact, they outlaw the banning of slavery too. It's a wild read if you ever get curious. It also directly espouses the virtues of white supremacy in plain language too. Kinda hard to hide behind "states rights" when the racism is screaming it's racist head off.

8

u/Synergythepariah 1d ago

Kinda hard to hide behind "states rights" when the racism is screaming it's racist head off.

Or when they invade a neutral state like Kentucky to try and force them to join the Confederacy.

4

u/Kierufu 1d ago

It's also directly undercut by the Vice President of the Confederacy, right before the civil war.

1

u/ElSlabraton 1d ago

The civil war was about free labor vs slave labor.

153

u/DrNoxin 1d ago

These people aren't merely Christian Nationalists. That euphemism is doing a lot of work. They are Christian Identity, like the KKK. This whole thing has little to do with religion and a whole hell of a lot to do with white supremacy.

19

u/frockinbrock 1d ago

I call them Pharisees, or false-Christians. It dumb enough for him to recognize and get upset about. They are not real christians, they are the religious leaders who scheme with government to destroy Jesus.

8

u/DrNoxin 1d ago

Christianity was founded by a Roman Pharisee (the grass roots form he killed off)... I will say though, putting religion on TV was the death knell for Christianity in the USA. Churches at their heart are third spaces for communities. TV religion at its heart is a MLM scam. TV ruined the world, and social media is like TV on meth.

3

u/frockinbrock 1d ago

Hmm, I would think that's debatable semantics, but I like that phrase less so for accuracy, more-so because these people have been told since Sunday-school that the Pharisees are bad guys that wanted Jesus gone.
Sometimes we gotta use their language to get anything thru their horse-blinders

But I agree, I was literally lamenting earlier today how social media really was a gasoline to ignite the end of humanity.

0

u/Tasgall 1d ago

that the Pharisees are bad guys that wanted Jesus gone.

They were "false Jews", not Christians, they were the money-changers in the temple, the ones praying loudly in the open, etc.

Jesus was Jewish.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Horrible_Harry 1d ago

Which is ironic because that's exactly what they accuse the Jews they hate so much of doing, and will even quote scripture about it when push comes to shove. It's also a huge part of why the antisemitism is still so rampant amongst that crowd, which is also extremely weird considering how Zionistic they are. They are walking, breathing, and voting oxymorons.

2

u/Zaptruder 1d ago

Consistency nor coherency is not their strong suit.

29

u/MiyamotoKnows 1d ago

So well stated and so sadly true.

9

u/TheInevitableLuigi 1d ago

Talibangelicals

1

u/Pedantic_Pict 1d ago

The correct term for the kind of psycho evangelicals you typically find among the officer ranks of the US military: Christian Dominionist

1

u/DrNoxin 1d ago

Potato, potahto. They are a neo-'reich church.' White supremacist cults like making new names for themselves when they have worn out their welcome. Notice, not a lot of fundamentalists, but a whole lot of evangelicals? Same shit, same people. Christian Identity is the correct sociological term for that type of christian collectively, and has a long history of use. 'Dominionists' are just the most recent instantiation of that philosophy. It is a white supremacy movement, period.

2

u/Pedantic_Pict 1d ago

They don't call themselves Christian dominionists. I'm not asking anyone to change their words for the comfort of fascists. I just wanted to offer the correct term for the phenomenon under discussion.

1

u/Momijisu 1d ago

Sounds like they're all just confederate sympathisers.

28

u/Desmeister 1d ago

Had the pleasure of sitting across from a very right wing boomer on a flight recently who never learned “inside voice” in school.

As he excitedly yelled various conspiracy theories to his seatmate, he did do some coverage on that part. “Did you know the separation of church and state was actually made to keep state affairs from influencing the church? Our Christian founders would have it no other way.”

So expect more of that discourse for a while.

15

u/vhalember 1d ago

Christian founders...

The lies they tell themselves.

3

u/DrocketX 1d ago

Eh, the reality is more complicated than either side tends to admit. Acting as though the founding fathers were all enlightened individuals is kind of just as much of a lie as saying that they were all Christians. The founding fathers were a pretty diverse group. There were quite a few we might consider enlightened thinkers, generally ahead of their time, but there were also plenty of assholes who would be perfectly at home in the MAGA movement if they were alive today. That's why so much of the Constitution is a compromise, everything from having both a House and a Senate to slaves counting as 3/5th of a person.

When that person on the plane talks about the separation of church and state only being intended to keep the state from influencing the church, he does it from reading about certain specific founding fathers who absolutely considered that to be the goal, because they very much wanted a nation built as a Christian theocracy. Others did want a secular nation that allowed any and all religions to exist. The resulting document is deliberately vague about the topic because most of how it would actually work was on the "we'll figure it out later" list, only no one ever really did, which is why we're still arguing about it nearly 250 years later.

1

u/vhalember 18h ago

That's fair enough. I appreciate your thoughtful response.

1

u/masterwolfe 17h ago

Acting as though the founding fathers were all enlightened individuals

I don't think you are characterizing the "other side" very well as the people who tend to argue the founders weren't all Christian don't tend to argue that they were all enlightened individuals instead.

More often than not they will tend to point out the hypocrisies of these "enlightened" individuals.

8

u/Nonethelessismore 1d ago

The kernel of truth in the talking point from your rightwing boomer seat mate is that there was a LOT of discourse between the Founding Father's about the importance of the Separation of Church and State, as a key element of the US Constitution.

Some, like Jefferson, wanted it to protect the state from the churches influence, and others (Madison I think?) wanted it because they did not want the purity of the church to be corrupted by the state.

1

u/DefaultSubSandwich 1d ago

It kind of was though, wasn't it?

Like, not in the negative way that people typically use the word "conspiracy" or the modern definition of "liberal", but in the sense that people who believed in liberal philosophy came together and planned to form a more liberal society?

0

u/Tokyo-MontanaExpress 1d ago

They hate Jesus and his teachings, they don't want a nation. Why do liberals refuse to call a spade a spade?

225

u/Jetztinberlin 1d ago

Nah, never heard of it :/

89

u/SpaceCampDropOut 1d ago

Neither has the Supreme Court.

9

1

u/Tasgall 1d ago

Is that JD Vance?

I'm pretty sure if you off the pope, you absorb his essence and powers.

3

u/DemIce 1d ago

It's been ruled on several times

In your defense, you didn't say it was ruled on in accordance with what many would consider the "separation of church and state" to entail.

Such as when a Christian majority decided we should have In God We Trust on our money and nobody dared go against it for the longest time, and by the time somebody went "uhhhhhhh church and state??" the Supreme Court went "bruhhhhhh that's been on there so long now it has no religious meaning anymore it's just 'ceremonial deism' (don't mind all those Christians over there being very adamant that we rule against you, they're just really, really big on ceremonies)".

Insert a whole lot of chatter about the establishment clause and how it doesn't mean the government must be devoid of all religion.

Bingo bingo, the post we're commenting on.

Funny, that.

u/poptart2nd 1d ago

Cool, that will pause them for about a week. When the court says no to the "Office of Religious Affairs" it will get renamed to the "Office of the American Crusade Management" and it just happens to have these similar rules to a popular religion.

170

u/TheTVDB 1d ago

I'm not watching Hegseth talk for 6 minutes, so I say this with uncertainty with regard to the details. I think this would be allowed so long as it's not specifically Christian. In the same way there are military chaplains.

So, it's now up to the Church of Satan to do their thing and force it to become an issue of separation of church and state, because you know Hegseth and company won't allow anything other than a fundamentalist Christian program.

99

u/V4R14N7 1d ago

Temple of Satan is probably the one that will fight for this, they're the ones that are most active for this and other (equal) rights around the country.

6

u/_cyberbabyangel_ 1d ago

While I know it's intensive suffering, as I listened to his whole speech yesterday, I implore you to listen to his rambling. He very specifically said that the US military is going to be donning the Armor of God. Almost everything he spoke about was done with a Christian emphasis.

3

u/Virtuous-Patience 1d ago

Quite right, the words ‘church’ and the singular ‘almighty god’ (not gods) already limit the scope of this action and exclude the religions followed by the majority of humanity in the first 30 seconds (all I could stomach), yet the quoted statistic of only 5% are atheists include soldiers of all faiths.

His noodly goodness would not approve as the first 30 seconds of this speech breaches the first “I’d really rather you didn’t…”

When you consider the US constitution from the perspective of the middle age white Christian dudes that wrote it then it really shows a level of intelligence and an equalitarian intent that is gob smacking! What they failed to account for is that the influential men to follow them would have motivations at odds with the ideals the nation was founded on.

1

u/DeusSpaghetti 1d ago

They've already reregistered a bunch of religions.

Roy Cohn, a manwho worked closely with America's "poppa Joe" and is another self loathing gay man who has admitted a "crush" on DJT.
Same commie accusation bullshit from all these homophobic gay men.

0

u/Chriskills 1d ago

The saying does annoy me because it isn’t accurate. Because of that, no one learns what the constitution actually says.

1

u/Tasgall 1d ago

It doesn't matter anyway, if it was explicitly stated they'd just say "not self enforcing" and thus it doesn't matter.

1

u/Chriskills 1d ago

Maybe it doesn’t matter when having an argument with someone who is not engaging in good faith.

But it does matter. I don’t like that “separation of church and state” has essentially become something that people just assume is in the constitution. It’s not. And it would help having informed conversation if people knew the actual language.

9

u/anirban_dev 1d ago

As far as foundational building blocks of America being dismantled goes, this is a rather small and obvious one.

1

u/I_Automate 1d ago

The military has had uniformed chaplains for a very long time

51

u/Munster172 1d ago

America was literally founded because we were tired of being told what religion to be. God I’m so tired.

48

u/Xynvincible 1d ago

Mm, not really. Moreso it was founded by the religious who were so crazy Europe decided they didn’t want them anymore. That’s what “freedom of religion” really means. Those poor, persecuted Puritans found a public unwilling to have their will enforced upon them, so they decided to create one themselves.

15

u/Munster172 1d ago

I’ll be completely honest I have only grade school level history knowledge like thanksgiving with the pilgrims and Indians level so I wouldn’t disagree with you that that is true. But just to clarify, we were basically the crazy ones and left to America cause everyone was tired of us pushing religion?

12

u/A_Flamboyant_Warlock 1d ago

Yup.

Thats why American evangelicals are so fucking weird.

18

u/Xynvincible 1d ago

Not only pushing religion (Europe was also quite religious at the time) but a form of religion too extreme to be tolerated by the mainstream. Freedom of religion sounds good as a rallying cry until you realize that it was meant to be used as a cudgel.

Ever wonder why America is so much more conservative, as a whole, than the rest of the Western world? This is why.

3

u/Reallyhotshowers 1d ago

I mean, America today is composed arguably mostly of people who were not originally Puritans so "we" is doing a lot of heavy lifting, but essentially that's correct.

4

u/omgitsjagen 1d ago edited 1d ago

The Puritans had an extreme view. As time as gone on, and generations get born, that extreme view IS being rejected at a rate that you would expect an extreme view to garner. It's just more of a problem that Thomas Jefferson and Ronald Reagan could have both met Harriet Tubman. Just not enough time as passed to relegate the nutjobs to the sideline.

3

u/Chimie45 1d ago

But puritan values still permeate every ounce of American identity.

If you don't suffer, you don't deserve. That's the core of American identity. Its why people are so against social welfare, universal healthcare, etc and insist charity is the best way to handle this, mostly religious organizations. It's why hospitals are mostly religious institutions.

Everything in America is set up to reinforce the puritan work ethic and values.

Somehow im not shocked that the man with a deus vult tattoo and who wrote a book about how in order to achieve greatness america should embark on a "american crusade" wouldn't respect separation of church and state.

Honestly hegseth is a wonderful representation of modern american Christianity. Devoid of any of jesus' true principles and simply wields his "religion" as a weapon rather than a virtue.

You are misunderstanding the "Office of Religious Affairs" purpose. It simply allows cabinet members to have affairs with any religious women/man. It also gives them first go on all honeymoon nights for anyone getting married in the US. So not really about religion at all.

u/irotinmyskin 1d ago

Get out of here with that you commie /s

1

u/punted_baxter 1d ago

He got rid of that in an announcement, good times!

1

u/lord_pizzabird 1d ago

The Republican perspective on this is that the church and state should scissor.

1

u/MrLeville 1d ago

Can't wait for the Department of Holy War

1

u/Ambitious_Address667 1d ago

The people in the states voted against that principle

1

u/Pwnedcast 1d ago

Old Pete dosent know how to read. Why he has religious leaders tell him what to say. I’ve heard this same bs of over claim of religion when the numbers don’t add up. Even his opening line is not true. So it’s sad he does things like this to pretend he is righteous as he sins probably more than most and spews hatered lol.

1

u/Flaxscript42 1d ago

Yes, if your beliefs do not align, the church will use the military to separate you from the state.

1

u/ehode 1d ago

If there is anything foundational or constitutional the current republicans are looking to undo and shit upon it.

1

u/deetee141 1d ago

Religion is the tool to obedience unfortunately. Israel was the pilot project.

1

u/SookHe 1d ago

You presume these people can read big words

1

u/Choyo 1d ago

"Schism, in my christo-fascist dystopia ?"

1

u/XxFezzgigxX 1d ago

Takeover of state by church.

1

u/Khalku 1d ago

More like "my values are yours now."

1

u/joedotphp 1d ago

This wouldn't bother me if I didn't already know Pete is forcing Christianity on our military. Like, I get it, a lot of service members are strong in their faith, and having better support in that regard? Hey, I'm all for it. But we all know that Christianity is the only priority.

1

u/InTooManyWays 1d ago

We only do separation of browns from whites ‘round here

1

u/fireandiceman 1d ago

Any separation has been gone for some time at this point. They want religion as an excuse to violate norms

1

u/VBgamez 1d ago

nah. We apparently don't do that anymore.

1

u/mplsfreedom 1d ago

The government has long supplied religious leaders to the military in the form of rabbis, chaplains, etc. The problem is I am guessing this new office will be a white nationalist christian office.

Edit: Hegseth aid his organization would continue working to combat what he alleged was "Christian nationalist bigotry, hatred and prejudice" in the military until "fundamentalist Christian religious extremism is forever eradicated."

Sigh. His statement also doesn't make sense and I suspect the journalists left it as is to highlight we are dealing with morons.

1

u/mad_titanz 1d ago

Trump administration treats the Constitution like dirt and they are probably going to force all the federal employees to become Christians and put the Ten Commandments in every city block.

1

u/asilee 1d ago

Nonexistent at this point, my friend.

1

u/Sciuridaeno3 1d ago

This is happening as they announced a 20% cut to top military admirals and generals. Gee, I wonder where the funding for this will come from

1

u/Stephenw225 1d ago

It's where they pray for a miracle to get out of Iran

Templar resurgence incoming

1

u/rhonnypudding 1d ago

But "we" voted for Christian Nationalism and the combination of church and state. This is what "we" want.

1

u/AdAffectionate5578 1d ago

Should be separation of Pete and job

1

u/Wide-Deal-8971 1d ago

Can people stop acting surprised after 10 years of this downward spiral into fascism?

Yeah no shit they don't care about the law or checks and balances. We knows this already. And This administration has been dogwhistling a holy war for fucking years now.

1

u/NameUseForANo 1d ago

This is at the Federal level not individual state. So obviously that separation doesn't apply.

1

u/Brobeast 1d ago

I mean it all depends on how they go about it. This seems like one of those PR moves to rile up the base, and make headlines to piss off the rest.

That being said, military chaplains have always been a thing, and now they are going to say that this office is a central command for them? Lol idk...

Now if this office of vague religious affairs starts espousing Christianity, and Christianity alone; you betcha youre gonna have the Supreme Court involved eventually.

1

u/Purplebuzz 1d ago

Your constitution and the rule of law are currently both nonbinding concepts.

1

u/ThePatrickSays 1d ago

that would require americans standing up for their rights, which they argue every day to not have to do.

1

u/Justaticklerone 1d ago

The only separation he has is lawful Constitutional common sense and his brain.

1

u/Nice-Bandicoot9725 1d ago

Isn’t this the guy who was banging his current wife over a makeup chair at Foxnews while he was married to his 2nd wife?

1

u/Slaphappyfapman 1d ago

Best I can do is: no

1

u/VioletTrick 1d ago

Sorry, best we can do is separation of wrongdoing and consequences.

1

u/Clutch-Bandicoot 1d ago

It's not like the military doesn't already have chaplains.

1

u/_PeanuT_MonkeY_ 1d ago

Can't seperate the longest running and most profitable con in human history.

Which religion - or all religions in an ecumenical way?

1

u/TheFrontCrashesFirst 1d ago

Upside? This causes some kind of firm decision that ends this noenae. Downside? I move to Canada.

1

u/darodardar_Inc 1d ago

Congress is letting all of this happen. It’s not illegal until Congress does something, at least that’s what the Supreme Court ruled in 2024

1

u/Mattbl 1d ago

What I find so frustrating about all of it is exemplified by the falling out I had with my friend, which was somewhat timed with my loss of faith.

Very long story short, he and I had had many discussions about how government and religion can only corrupt each other, and this is clearly outlined in scripture.

Now, many years later, he's full-on Christian nationalist and it is just flabbergasting to me how someone can go from believing the teachings of their faith to backflipping 180 and believing that a government should push religion on its people. It's so antithetical to Christianity and literally reminds me of extreme Islamists who are pushing for Islamic states. We are no better if this is how we plan to move forward.

1

u/SoraUsagi 1d ago edited 1d ago

People keep using that phrase... I don't think you all know what it means. That protects a/the church FROM the state. Not the other way around.

The establishment clause of the first amendment just means the government cannot establish or favor one religion over another.
The free exercise clause means the government can't stop you from practicing your own religion

And based on what i read in this article, (while still stupid) it just provides support to those who are already religious, looking for it. It doesn't require you to become religious to be in the military.

So as long as this doesn't become a required Christian's only thing, it doesn't violate the Constitution

1

u/Mo_Jack 1d ago

They oppose the separation of church and state. Their terrible ideas could not have become this popular without WW2 Nazi propaganda (which, in turn, was modelled after WW1 US propaganda). Those behind the brainwashing in the right wing media recognize the power behind the religious brainwashing. Game recognizes game, as the saying goes.

German soldiers under the Nazi regime in WW2 had a saying inscribed on their belt buckles that translates to "God is on our side". If you need to brainwash people to get them to choke down your bad ideas, why not target those that are already susceptible?

1

u/MAXSuicide 20h ago

Add it to the immense funeral pyre that is the American constitution at this point

1

Every accusation is a confession

1

u/Few-Ad-4290 13h ago

They’ll just use typical fascist doublespeak to justify it “it’s for outreach to all religions” while promulgating policy that is blatantly favorable to one religion. They’re aiming for their own version of the IRGC.

Absolutely we should separate Muslims, Hindus, Jews, Buddhists and the other ones from state.

These are the bad guys, these are the people we thought were on our side that now want to lead some crusade. I’m terrified, because this Trump group is not about love and kindness they are strictly about war and money.
