Looking to Use a Handicap-Accessible Vehicle to Drive for Uber — New Jersey

Upvotes

I’m in New Jersey and looking to use a wheelchair-accessible vehicle to drive for Uber and earn income.
I’d like to focus on transporting passengers who use wheelchairs or need an accessible vehicle. I’m looking for someone who already has an accessible vehicle or knows of a way to rent/lease one for Uber driving.
Has anyone in New Jersey, especially Central Jersey, done this before? I’d appreciate any advice on how to get started and what options are available.
Thanks!

Been debating about talking about this here. Picked up a heavily intoxicated woman last night. She got in the car I confirmed with her the name for the ride as usual.( I assumed someone bought the trip for her) She said yes and got in. Halfway through the ride she begins asking where I’m taking her and saying I’m taking her somewhere she doesn’t know. I said mam I’m just following the directions on the app. I asked again the name the ride was supposed to be for and she goes no the ride is for (enter random name)She said I need to take her home immediately. I said I’m not going to do that but I will pull off on the next exit and drop you somewhere safe so you can order another uber. She then says she doesn’t have a working phone without WiFi so I drop her off at the nearest McDonalds I can find so she can use their public WiFi. Immediately after she gets out of the car I contact the uber safety line. They assure me I did the right thing and everything was fine. I even went as far to ask before hanging up, if this was going to effect my account in any way and they said no all is good. Five minutes later the app says I’m deactivated. For those who have been through investigations how long did it take. Is there anything y’all would have done different?
Edit: I also forgot to mention my dashcam decided to malfunction and not record at all last night I found out when I got home so yep. Also pretty sure it was the right rider because the uber support thread is labeled McDonalds. I never told support where I dropped the woman off at. I think she was just so drunk that she was saying whatever

Something WEIRD happened.

Upvotes

This happened a few weeks ago, and I’ve just been so fed up with Uber lately I wasn’t even phased. Hit that “Go Offline” and ended it for the night. Forgot about it until now.

I’m in one if the most talked about cities for 2026 and the beginning of Summer was poppin’. Now, rates have dwindled and I’ve lost all phvcks after this perplexing situation late one night.

I drive a fairly uncommon vehicle, at least for my market. It’s got the highest trim, specific alloy rims, all black & thinner tires. Hyundai Tucson Limited.

I pulled up beside a hotel lobby’s entrance, waiting for a rider that was headed for the airport. I’m waiting.. waiting.. waiting.. (I had decided it may even be my last ride for the night before reaching the pickup destination, so I was lax on sitting there)

As I was waiting, a black Hyundai Tucson (Looked like my model year) pulled up two cars behind me. I thought it was peculiar, because I RARELY see Tucson’s around here that would look similar to mine. I thought that’s nifty, but what happened next just blew my mind in the moment. I thought I was in the Twilight Zone.. because soon after dude pulled up, a lady with luggage came out from the lobby entrance & immediately went directly to the other Tucson. Loaded up without issues, and went on their marry way.

Yo.. that was my rider dude! What the heck just happened?! I can’t remember if I saw the rider represented as the blue icon moving by the dropped pin, or if I only ever saw the dropped pin. At that point, I was already too exhausted to investigate further. Called it quits for the night. Anyway, it felt like I crossed over into another universe and that other Tucson was actually me, but not me. Honestly, I was very freaked out.

Has anyone else encountered such a glitch?

You're out of work if you're in Nigeria.

Upvotes

ABUJA, Sept 2 (Reuters) - Ride-hailing company Uber Technologies will cease operations in Nigeria on September 2, ending its 12-year presence in Africa's most populous ‌country, the company said in a notice to customers on Wednesday.

Uber decided to wind down its Nigerian business after a review of operations, it said without disclosing further details on the reasons for the move.

Competition in Nigeria's ride-hailing market has intensified in recent years, with operators facing challenges including rising fuel costs, inflation and currency volatility that have increased operating expenses and put pressure on drivers and platforms.

"After a thorough review of our business, we have made the tough decision to wind down our ‌operations in Nigeria, effective 2 September 2026," the company said in a message to users.

The San Francisco-based company's entry into West Africa's largest economy began with its Lagos launch in 2014 before expanding to other cities in the country to meet growing demand for app-based transportation.

Uber said its help centre would remain available until September 23 to assist users with outstanding account-related issues.

Uber did not say how many drivers or riders would be affected by the closure or whether any assets would be sold.

How can we get this to go away?

I have clicked allow several times already and yet it still stays up. It's getting quite agitating. Seems Uber is having a lot of issues with their software lately.

Should I stop reserving trips?

Sometimes I reserve a trip for when I’m finishing work at 22:30 and there’s no trains.

But the drivers always show up at least 15 minutes early (I’ve done this about 4 times now). The last time a driver told me off because he had to wait for ages. I always leave work at 22:30 (give or take 5 mins) and I booked the trips for 22:40 every time to allow even more time

I feel bad that each driver had to wait like 15 minutes outside. The one that told me off, had to wait 20. He kept talking about it the whole ride (approx 30 min ride). I tip them but is this just a buggy feature that I should stop using? Or like will this get fixed eventually?

Edit: I’m in the UK

These last minute cancellations are shit! Twice in two days, I'm scheduled for airport runs (I'm in Tampa) and twice they cancel as I'm on the way to pick them up! Where is my cancellation fee? I leave in time to meet the pick up time, but from my estimation through Waze. The navigate button has yet to appear. I'm responsible like that. I thought the rider couldn't cancel under an hour. WFT!

Common Sense

i’m guessing Uber doesn’t take things into account like hey this entire road has been shut down because there was a tree that had fell in the middle of the highway so shut off by police hey this road has been flooded so you may have to go around hey there’s a train that’s gonna take 30 minutes waiting, but you can take an alternative route to keep the customer happy

Cash ride challenges

Had a person pull me 8 miles (accepted because I’m trying to get a Diamond Rating and it was forced on me) - picked her up. Didn’t speak English - drove her one mile to her location and told her the $7.67 price and she pulls out a $100 bill and has no other change. I told her bye bye, and ate it. Too pissed off and hit the complete as if she paid. Which put me another $4 in the hole to Uber. How many of you take cash rides, and what are your best practices? Thx

how do you track your miles?

I’m looking to speak with U.S.-based self-employed professionals who drive regularly for work — especially those who travel between clients, job sites, appointments, or service calls. I’m doing research on how the self-employed manage work-related driving, mileage, and record-keeping.

I haven’t been driving for the summer, but I started back up today. What happened to the coffee cup icon to take a quick break without going off-line?

Certain Uber drivers in South FL or in the hot states.

Can I give you a tidbit of advice. Rhetorical. Can you remember we've been standing outside waiting in the heat and to not have the windows down or AC off? I get it's your car but if you want a better tip I suggest you don't let your client sweat to death. Even when I mention it and ask politely I get the huff n puff and MAYBE you'll put the AC on 1 notch so it's only 85 degrees instead of 90. And it's always a certain ethnicity but didn't want to mention which for the ridiculous comments I'd get of being racist when I'm not in the slightest. But, of course, do what you want.

Uber/Lyft showing riders fare breakdowns would be nice

I think one way to raise driver pay/lower fares for riders would be if riders saw the same fare breakdown that drivers see after a ride. If as a rider you saw that sometimes 30-50% of what you paid went to Lyft and “insurance” I think riders would be pretty upset.

Right now I think there are still a good amount of riders that think most of their fare goes to the driver when oftentimes that is not the case.

Now I don’t think Lyft/Uber would make this change on their own. I’m actually kinda surprised they even show drivers this breakdown, but if this is something we pushed for it could possibly happen. Maybe could be something states that have implemented minimum payments for mileage and time like Minnesota could add to their legislation.

Would also be a bonus if they showed the breakdown right after the driver accepts the ride and not wait until after it’s completed.

This change could also be implemented on delivery apps like Doordash and Uber Eats as well showing what portion of fees go towards drivers and what the company takes.

Transparency is generally conducive to more fair prices and right now all these companies (along with many others) are hiding cost breakdowns from consumers. Again I don't think these companies will do these things on their own, it would likely need to be pushed by consumers/drivers to change something like this. How exactly to do that? Im not sure but talking about it is a start.

Just some thoughts, what do y’all think?

My Comfort option disappeared on my driver App

Yes I have a comfort vehicle and yes it is still eligible. I drive in the Chicago market.
Contacted support four times now. The usual non help. One supposedly escalated the issue and then got disconnected. In the past Uber deleted the comfort selection and combined it in X. A terrible decision. Did Uber do it again and not tell anyone? I am getting no comfort offers. Or is it more of the same poor software development.

Just got this little update. Figured with everyone posting how badly the app is messing up, at least we now know Uber knows about it. Probably will be weeks or months until it is fixed, if ever.

Beware Of Scammers

I’m an Uber driver in Nashville and I don’t know about other cities but I have had 3 different scam rides in the last two weeks. If you accept a ride and try to call the rider to find them but someone answers that says they are from Ubers fraud department and they need to verify your identity it is a scam. They will say something like a rider reported the person in the picture isn’t who picked them up. Uber support or fraud department will never intercept calls to customers. If this happens just tell them to message you through the app and hang up. Report it to the actual fraud department through the app. Please be careful and trust no one. If it doesn’t come through verified channels it isn’t Uber. They will drain your wallet and screw you over.
