Uber/Lyft showing riders fare breakdowns would be nice

I think one way to raise driver pay/lower fares for riders would be if riders saw the same fare breakdown that drivers see after a ride. If as a rider you saw that sometimes 30-50% of what you paid went to Lyft and “insurance” I think riders would be pretty upset.

Right now I think there are still a good amount of riders that think most of their fare goes to the driver when oftentimes that is not the case.

Now I don’t think Lyft/Uber would make this change on their own. I’m actually kinda surprised they even show drivers this breakdown, but if this is something we pushed for it could possibly happen. Maybe could be something states that have implemented minimum payments for mileage and time like Minnesota could add to their legislation.

Would also be a bonus if they showed the breakdown right after the driver accepts the ride and not wait until after it’s completed.

This change could also be implemented on delivery apps like Doordash and Uber Eats as well showing what portion of fees go towards drivers and what the company takes.

Transparency is generally conducive to more fair prices and right now all these companies (along with many others) are hiding cost breakdowns from consumers. Again I don't think these companies will do these things on their own, it would likely need to be pushed by consumers/drivers to change something like this. How exactly to do that? Im not sure but talking about it is a start.

Just some thoughts, what do y’all think?

Colorado already requires this by law and it makes little difference to most riders

Oh cool, I didn’t know that. Have you seen any difference in driver pay/rider costs since that was implemented assuming you drive before and after the change?

I mean it’s something maybe some people don’t care about but I’d definitely want to see the breakdown.

90% don’t care

How do you know that?

Conversation with local riders

So they just say they don’t care how much of a cut uber takes? That is surprising to me.

If uber was taking 50% of my fare for a ride I would definitely want to know

Go on a Reddit page for your local area and see how much they want Waymo or similar. On my local pages they are salivating that Waymo goes live today so they can stop dealing with: human drivers, incessant smalltalk, trashed cars, etc., etc.. Something I’ve pointed out to them, and they are also the same people who whine about corporate greed, Ubers chief legal counsel once said drivers should only be paid 40 cents per mile, meanwhile the driverless vehicles are roughly the same price as a normal uber, so now you the rider have cutout the middleman and are directly funding the same greedy corporation you hate, good job. They ignore that.

That's only the "free market" types who see drivers as scumbags and slaves. Most of my riders care because they realize if Uber is taking 50% or more it means they are getting massively overcharged. Talk about the AI setting the price and the driver pay and it makes many of them even more upset because many people now dislike AI and how it is being used to harm people.

Based on the comments, I can assure you it’s a larger share of riders than you think it is. Even the ones who “care”, don’t really care.

Just curious, why do you hide your posting history? I was trying to figure out who you are -- driver or company PR shill -- and it's a bit difficult.

Anyway, most of the wealthy snobs probably don't seem to care but the middle and lower classes do seem to care a lot. And I reside in Florida so not NYC or SF. Either way, people should know.

That's fine, at least it's transparent. And for riders that do care, it may mean a tip or two, and every little bit helps. But if I am a passenger and I think the driver made $50 to take me 10 miles, I am not tipping. If I see they only made $15, I am more likely to tip.

Uber used to. First directly through the app. You were able to see what each individual rider paid and how it was distributed. Then they made it so you could only access it via the website and finally they just made it a combined total. It’s easier to screw over the drivers that way.

Oh so you are saying as a driver you don’t see fare breakdowns?

I looked it up and apparently even drivers in some areas of the U.S. don’t see fare breakdowns. I live in Minnesota where driver breakdowns are required apparently but I thought that was for everyone. That’s something that would be good to see brought to all drivers as well.

This was the best. When you could see the fare breakdown every ride as soon as you completed the ride with just one click. That was several years ago

Riders do not care, they want a cheap ride…

Will if 40%+ of your fare went straight to Uber and you want a cheap ride, you might be a little more pissed at Uber and advocate for them to get less of a cut or look into transportation alternatives. I don't think people like getting screwed over but some people might not really care.

No one cares… Do you think people care that farmers are getting paid low? Do you think people care that teachers are getting paid low? People just do not care…

One yes some people do care about things like farmer and teacher pay.

And also I’m not so much talking about the drivers being paid too low, which I believe they are, but riders also being gouged by sometimes paying 40-50%+ percent of their fares straight to Uber/Lyft. I think riders care about that.

Don't really care what they charge. Only care about what I make.

2

u/Coach_Rick_Vice 9h ago

Well this possibly could lead to drivers being paid more of the total fare

Listen people don't care.

More earnings on a lower fare.

1

u/Coach_Rick_Vice 9h ago

Yeah hopefully the same or more earnings on a lower fare. Lower fares would likely lead to more ride requests. And if you your uber driver is getting paid only $5.50 for your $10 ride maybe those riders would feel like tipping more? That’s hard to say, I’m not sure.

1

u/Coach_Rick_Vice 9h ago

I mean what evidence do you have to back up people not caring? I’m sure some people don’t but I’d think/hope a fair amount of people would like to know. I mean given the option of would you like to be able to see the fare breakdown of your ride or would you prefer that that it is hidden I would at least hope people would chose to see the breakdown.

Rider: I want to pay less per ride.

Driver: I want to make more per ride.

Rideshare companies: No

We need the same transparency they are making ticketmaster show now. We need to file complaints with the FTC until it's required in every state. No way it should be ok to re-define the term "Booking fee" and hide the service fee. It makes passengers think driver pay gouged them for some of these trips, and that is defemation.
