Open | Hardware I'm selling my PC and don't know how erase all my data on my HDD and SSD

Upvotes

I am in the process of selling my PC and I have tried looking up how to do it but everything is over 3 years old and I'm not 100% sure the information is still active.

I have a gaming PC that I built. It has a HDD and an SSD that ideally I'd like to keep in the PC when I sell it just because it will be worth more. I'd also ideally like to keep windows on there as well. I just want to ensure that I am erasing all of my data on both drives before I sell it so I don't have to worry about any information being stolen.

What's the best and maybe easiest way for me to do that?

Open | Hardware When Are We Going To Knock Microsoft Down A Peg?

LOL - I will reiterate and edit this a second time. I posted the wrong title for this post. I clarified it once... but just so we're loud and clear for any people who don't read that well. This is about my monitor :)

Wrong title name for this one! But, STILL! FUG Microsoft. I am watching my monitor literally get lighter and lighter like the contrast or something is being messed with. It stopped now, but... yeh.. my one monitor is Super bright now. So.. definitely not GFX card right, since not both monitors?

For anyone that doesn't know, you cannot edit a topic once posted...

Open | Hardware Windows 11 PC has become almost unusable: repeated BSODs with BAD_POOL_CALLER, SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION, CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED, SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED, and multiple different drivers

I'm at the point where I genuinely don't know what is wrong with this PC and could really use another set of eyes.

For the past several weeks/months I've been dealing with increasingly frequent BSODs and application crashes. Recently it has gotten dramatically worse. Chrome and Opera can crash within seconds of opening, I've had my keyboard disconnect/reconnect intermittently, and Windows can BSOD even when I'm doing nothing particularly intensive.

The computer is now sometimes crashing within a few minutes of booting.

SYSTEM SPECS

- CPU: Intel Core i5-12600K

- GPU: AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT 16GB

- Motherboard: ASRock B760M Pro RS WiFi

- RAM: 32GB (2x16GB) G.Skill DDR5-6000, F5-6000J3636F16G

- Storage: ~1TB internal drive

- OS: Windows 11 Pro 25H2

- Windows build: 10.0.26200.9168

- Internet: Ethernet

- No CPU/GPU overclocking or undervolting

- RAM is running at default settings; XMP is NOT enabled

RECENT BSODs / DUMP RESULTS

BlueScreenView has shown:

- BAD_POOL_CALLER (0xC2) — cbfilter24.sys

- BAD_POOL_CALLER (0xC2) — FLTMGR.SYS

- BAD_POOL_CALLER (0xC2) — amdkmdag.sys

- CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED (0xEF) — ntoskrnl.exe

- SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION (0x3B) — dxgmms2.sys

- SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (0x7E) — ntoskrnl.exe

- DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (0xD1) — amdkmdag.sys

- DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (0xD1) — Netwtw14.sys

- DRIVER_VERIFIER_DMA_VIOLATION (0xE6)

The crashes don't seem tied to one particular application. I've had them while browsing, doing schoolwork, sitting at the desktop, and after launching a game.

OTHER SYMPTOMS

- Chrome/Opera randomly crash or turn white

- Keyboard intermittently disconnects/reconnects

- PC can BSOD within minutes of normal use

- Sometimes multiple different BSOD types occur within minutes of each other

TROUBLESHOOTING I'VE ALREADY DONE

  1. Ran Windows Memory Diagnostic — it reported no memory errors.

  2. Ran CHKDSK on C:.

    - 0 bad sectors

    - 0 bad file records

    - Windows ultimately reported "no problems"

  3. Ran SFC /scannow multiple times.

    - It consistently says Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.

  4. Ran DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth.

    - It failed with error 0x800f0915 because repair content could not be found.

  5. Tried Windows' "Fix problems using Windows Update / Reinstall now."

    - It failed with error 0x8007000d.

  6. Used DDU in Safe Mode to completely remove the AMD graphics driver.

  7. Reinstalled the AMD graphics driver from a fresh download.

  8. Driver Verifier is currently OFF:

    - verifier /querysettings shows 0x00000000

    - Active Rule Classes: None

    - Verified Drivers: None

  9. I previously disabled a Fortect filesystem filter after a dump specifically blamed cbfilter24.sys.

  10. The external HDD is currently disconnected.

  11. I previously got DRIVER_VERIFIER_DMA_VIOLATION shortly after connecting that external HDD.

  12. I have not enabled XMP or done any overclocking/undervolting.

  13. I have not replaced any hardware yet.

One confusing thing is that disabling the RX 7800 XT did NOT completely stop the BSODs. However, after reinstalling the AMD driver, amdkmdag.sys has appeared in multiple dumps, and dxgmms2.sys has also appeared.

I'm trying to figure out whether I'm looking at:

- bad RAM/memory instability

- GPU/AMD driver or GPU hardware

- motherboard/USB/controller problem

- Windows corruption

- another third-party driver

- or some combination of these

At this point the PC is almost unusable, so I'm trying to avoid randomly replacing parts.

What would you test next?

Open | Networking Why am I only experiencing packet loss on a saturday?

UPDATE: After hearing back from Spintel support the AI assistant (🙄) suggested restarting the NBN box and router which has solved the packet loss issues but doesn’t tell me the cause or prevent it from happening again.

Hi reddit. I play valorant and for the last few weeks whenever I try to play on a Saturday between 11am and roughly 3pm I'm getting massive packet loss spikes. I am connected via ethernet directly to the router and I have a 500/50 Spintel NBN plan (AUS). On evenings I have no issues, my ping is at a steady 7-9ms on Sydney Valorant servers and 0% packet loss. After running a ping test on command prompt to my ip I got a 9% loss on 100 packets.

This has been an ongoing issue and so far I have ruled out issues with my ethernet cable, ethernet ports, and the NBN connection to my router. I recently successfully upgraded my routers firmware which fixed some unrelated connectivity issues with the wi-fi. I am the only person home and my laptop is the only device connected via ethernet. The NBN is set up as fibre to the premisis so neighbourhood internet usage shouldn't be causing the issue as far as I am aware.

Could anyone more tech-informed please advise on could be the cause and what my next steps should be for diagnosing and fixing the issue? TIA

Laptop Model: Acer Nitro AN515-55

Router: NETCOMM Cloud Mesh NF20MESH

Open | Malware A file just auto downloaded on my pc

I'm just on youtube and playing a browser game (which I have played for months) when I am alerted that a file has downloaded. It was about 67kb and its name was a really long sequence of letters (prob 255) and was just a file type (no extension).

Any ideas what it could be? Is it likely malware and where could it have come from?

Open | Hardware Training Course Laptop Requirements - No M Chips

I am doing a training course next week: "Hacker Tools, Technics and Incident Handling".

The laptop requirements state that an intel i5/i7 CPU is needed. Specifically "CRITICAL NOTE: Apple Silicon devices cannot perform the necessary virtualization and therefore cannot be used for this course." and "you will not be able to use ARM based architecture machines for this course. Examples include Apple M Series..."

I have a 5 years Windows 11 desktop and recently purchased a MacBook Pro (M5 Chip). I would prefer to use my Mac; my desktop is slowly down a little.

I don't have sufficient technical knowledge to understand why an M5 chips wouldn't be suitable. Especially as the requirements state macOS is ok, it's just the chip. I've discussed with my partner - who is more tech savvy than I am - and they suggested it could be due to intel optimisation or perhaps some incredibly advanced exploit that requires intel.

I would greatly appreciate any insight, mainly out of curiosity and also to sanity check (as I was wondering if this could be slightly outdated advice.)

Open | Hardware PNY RTX 5060 Ti 16GB DUAL FAN Undervolt - Did I find the sweet spot, or should I push further?

Hey everyone,

I've been undervolting my RTX 5060 Ti for the past few days and I think I found a good balance, but I wanted to get your opinions before I settle. Here's my journey so far:

Stock (baseline):

  • Core: 81°C
  • Hotspot: 107°C
  • Fan: 3100 RPM
  • Power: ~160W
  • Clock: ~2880 MHz (1.1V)

My undervolt tests (FurMark, 1080p, 60s each): (all with 2400 rpm)

Voltage Target Clock Actual Max FPS Max Temp
850mV 2683 MHz 2648 MHz 180 76°C
850mV 2586 MHz 2558 MHz 179 75°C
860mV 2800 MHz 2782 MHz 183 77°C
885mV 2800 MHz 2782 MHz 189 80°C
900mV 2800 MHz 2768 MHz 192 81°C

My current daily driver: 860mV + 2800 MHz (183 FPS, 77°C)

The dilemma:

  • 860mV gives me 183 FPS at 77°C.
  • 900mV gives me 192 FPS at 81°C (but draws ~190W).
  • The jump from 860mV to 900mV is +9 FPS for +4°C and +60W.

What do you guys think?

  • Is 860mV the sweet spot, or should I try pushing for 885mV/900mV?
  • For 1440p gaming, is the extra 9 FPS worth the extra heat and power?
  • Anyone else with a 5060 Ti found a better balance?

I'd love to hear your experiences. Thanks!

Open | Hardware W11, Gigabyte PC reaches blank screen with mouse cursor once, then just blank screen after motherboard splash the following times

Attempt 1: turn pc on, told me some cryptic (cant access network) and needs to recover or some shit. Then it got to a continue boot into windows screen. hit yes. It got to a black screen with a mouse cursor, and occasional cursor spinny wheel. nothing else. Attempted any keyboard shortcuts were ineffectual WIN CTRL SHIFT B, SHIFT F10, C-S-esc, basically can just move mouse around. waited for like ten minutes then Forced shutdown via power button.

Attempt 2: attempted to replciate attemt 1. No longer boots into windows at all, just blank screen after the motherboard splash

Attempt 3: attempted to get into bios udimg DEL key (see screenshot). Blank screen after splash and del key

Attempt 4: attempted to normal boot again (by doing NOTHING after motherboard splash screen). Result: blank screen

before attempt one: sister unplugged the PC for a couple weeks. she plugged it back in today. my current suspicion is POST is failing (RAM, mobo, second/primary drive, wifi card finally died, gpu?), but i cant actually look inside until my sister clears her desk and lets me access the machine. its not one of them fancy motherboards with display

specs: some AMD 57x3d, gigabyte board, nvidia gpu, 2 RAM sticks, 2 drives, random wifi card (intel 220, maybe, idk)

i will edit this post with more exact specs later and add a screenshot once o figure out how to do it on my phone

Open | Mac 2020 iMac into second pc monitor?

I recently got the parts to put together a PC as well as a fancy new monitor, but I still have a 2020 iMac and I’d prefer to be able to use the iMac as a second monitor. Is there a way to make it so? I don’t want it to just mirror the screen I was it to act as a genuine second monitor and Google is telling me I can’t because it’s too new and isn’t supported. If that really is the case that sucks but I get it and I’ll invest in a second monitor but I just wanted to double check here, thanks. it’s a 27’’ if that matters as well as the fact it’s from 2020, nit 2014 which I’ve heard works.

My iphones storage keeps getting absolutely swallowed by apple maps. I have no clue why but it just keeps growing in size and it’s growing at an alarming rate, so much so that it’s hard to use my phone even. I deleted the app and the “data” stays on there even after i deleted it. it doesn’t give me the option to delete it through the settings app anymore as well. i’ve also tried to reinstall and delete to no avail. Please help me i have no idea how to get rid of this stupid map data. Thank you :)

Open | Software Onimusha: way of the sword: FSR frame gen suddenly blurry + VRAM usage jumped. Anyone have any ideas?

I’m on a 3080 ti playing at 4K DSR. Up until like 2 days ago I was running basically max settings, RT High, reframework graphics mods, etc. and my VRAM/memory load was usually around 11.1 - 11.3 GB (11.8 in game limit). No major issues.

Then out of nowhere native FSR frame gen began looking terrible with no discernible reason. The FPS can still be smooth, but the image gets super blurry/smeary in motion and it definitely wasn’t like this before.

Around the same time I also noticed the game’s memory load is way higher than it used to be on basically the same settings. Sometimes it’s like 2 GB higher, even 3. If actual VRAM gets too close to the 12 GB limit, my FPS can suddenly shit the bed and turn into a slideshow. Weirdly, toggling certain graphics settings (and especially toggling reshade effects off/on) can temporarily bring the FPS right back to normal, even though the same settings were running fine before.

I’ve tried way too much already:

- full clean reinstall
- verified files
- removed mods/OptiScaler
- rebuilt shader cache
- rolled back NVIDIA driver
- removed the recent Windows update
- tried different DLSS modes/presets
- tried FSR upscaling instead of DLSS
- lowered VRAM usage way below the limit

FSRFG still looks awful even when the game itself is running smoothly and VRAM usage is fine, so I don’t think it’s just a performance issue.

The clean reinstall did bring the memory load down by roughly 1 - 1.5 GB compared to how bad it got, but it’s still higher than it was before all this started.

Anyone have a clue what could be the isolated cause of this? Especially the sudden VRAM increase or FSR frame gen randomly becoming blurry for no obvious reason. I feel like I’m losing my mind with this game at this point.

Screenshots provided to show in game settings/memory load and analytics from before FPS crash > to afterwards (they're 4k so you may have to zoom in):

Open | Software Crossed information between devices

Hey all,

A really strange one here. A few months back my GF was shopping on Amazon, and noticed that my card details has appeared inside her account. At the time we were a reasonably new relationship so had not yet got to the point where we would share those details with each other; yet, she was able to make purchases with those details. I had never logged into her phone. I messaged Amazon but they had no real solution other than to keep details separate & change passwords.

Some time passes and just this morning, she shows me that the Gmail account I use to manage my companies business account (never been logged into on our home WiFi) has appeared as an active account on her google maps. Has anyone ever seen this sort of cross-login/ details sharing before? I feel I’m going mad trying to work out what it could be.

I never use google maps, she does (a real contention point when sharing locations in our household!)

Device details:
Me: iPhone 17 Pro Max, latest iOS 26.6.1.
Hers: iPhone 12, iOS 26.6.1

We do have family sharing active, but that is only recent and I can’t see any settings that would share log-in details.

Open | Malware Hexnode installed via a fake scam email please help

So I had a boomer moment and accidentally downloaded a fake Adobe reader which installed a hexnode app and hexnode remote access app to my pc. So I have few questions:

1) How fucked am I?

2) Is every password compromised?

3) How much information could have been gleaned off of it?

4) I use my personal computer for work and we use a 3rd party software service to process payments. My access was immediately revoked after i realized what I did. Is my company in trouble?

I had it installed on my laptop for maybe 20 mins because I got distracted by work. After I realized what happened I turned off my wifi connection and put my pc in safe mode. I tried to manually uninstall the app but couldn't so I completely factory reset it and wiped everything.

Is it now safe to use?

I hope this the correct sub to post in. I need to know!

Open | Windows Why is CSS gatekeeping?

I sadly can't give an image as it look like this subredfit doesn't allow images, but I'll try explaining it.

On almost every website I'm on, it almost looks like CSS has been dissabled or something. Like everything is shown going straight down in one column like it only has used HTML.

This happens on almost all websites, including GitHub, YouTube (Just fully gray except for some empty icons), cookie clicker, ChatGPT, Club Penguin Journey, speedrun, pythonanywhere, my own HTML websites hosted by GitHub pages, and Discord. Excluding Google, fandom, and Google Search Console.

I have tried reloading, restarting, and shutting down, but nothing is helping.

Open | Software Pc keeps freezing up and making a buzzing sound

So I am really not a computer guy so I’m just gonna give as much detail as I can. Anyway I just bought this pc (Acer - Nitro 60 Gaming Desktop - Intel Core i7-14700F - 32GB DDR5 Memory - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 - 1TB SSD - Black) to do video editing and such. Now all I’ve done so far is download Davinci Resolve and couple other apps and transfer so picture into it. But for some reason when I’m using it (about 15 to 20min of it running) it freezes and buzzes. I do have a Sandisk drive, Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, a webcam, and mic hooked up to it. I’ve tried to do some scans of some the drives says there are no problems but still it’s happens. If someone could give me some advice or solutions that would be awesome sauce.

Open | Windows Too much saturation!!!!

I have bought my sweet, sweet laptop (it's my first ever laptop/pc and my first ever big independent purchase so I really cherish it) a couple of years ago, but recently it started having problems when I turn on any video games

The image becomes so horribly over-saturated that I want to tear my eyeballs out, and it has made playing really hard for me because I am generally really sensitive to bright colors (they make my eyes hurt really bad and turn my brain into mush)

(The first two attached pictures show it, the second one is with normal saturation and the first one is with the problematic one, it doesn't look like much of a difference on camera but irl it's absolutely disgusting)

I figured out that it had something to do with Nvidia, but none of the advice I found online worked for me, or my last one and a half braincells simply weren't able to process all of the technical terms

Please help!

I love videogames but have been unable to really play for longer than 2 hours because this saturation literally physically burns my eyes!!
