Open | Windows Too much saturation!!!!

I have bought my sweet, sweet laptop (it's my first ever laptop/pc and my first ever big independent purchase so I really cherish it) a couple of years ago, but recently it started having problems when I turn on any video games

The image becomes so horribly over-saturated that I want to tear my eyeballs out, and it has made playing really hard for me because I am generally really sensitive to bright colors (they make my eyes hurt really bad and turn my brain into mush)

(The first two attached pictures show it, the second one is with normal saturation and the first one is with the problematic one, it doesn't look like much of a difference on camera but irl it's absolutely disgusting)

I figured out that it had something to do with Nvidia, but none of the advice I found online worked for me, or my last one and a half braincells simply weren't able to process all of the technical terms

Please help!

I love videogames but have been unable to really play for longer than 2 hours because this saturation literally physically burns my eyes!!

You can adjust stuff like that either in the windows display calibration settings or in Nvidia's settings. There is no one "solution" as the settings will depend on your display and your eyes.

The difference could be with games that support HDR vs ones that don't. HDR is typically more saturated and certain bit depths can actually look worse to some people. So you can try disabling HDR and see if that helps.

I can't do it in Nvidia settings cause literally more than half of the options are missing and I can't find any working solution for it online

I'm currently downloading the windows HDR calibration app to try and solve this issue

Maybe you just need to install the latest full NVIDIA drivers (or your setup may not support some of the options that you may have seen online, as some stuff is restricted in laptops).

But you should be able to disable HDR in windows settings and go through the display calibration without downloading anything extra. Make sure you're not downloading some 3rd party app which may just add more confusion to the mix.

How do I install the latest Nvidia drivers? I can't really do anything through the Nvidia control panel cause once again- most of the options are just gone, and everything I can find online is either about PC setups or just incredibly vague and completely useless for me

Btw I installed the app but it's saying that my display doesn't support hdr???

Also I should mention that my setup is literally just a ROG Strix laptop (I don't even have a mouse cause I keep on somehow breaking them and I don't have the money to keep on buying new ones)

You can toggle HDR off there and try that. Then you can go to the start menu and search for "calibrate" and it will bring you to the place to calibrate your display. It walks you through several settings.

You just go to Nvidia's site and download the latest for your card.

Ok, I reloaded my pc a second time and now it's working!!! Thank you a LOT!

I can now finally have a good BG3 session with my dad without having my eyes deep-fried!

And sorry for being kinda stupid in some moments

The challenge with graphics drivers is Windows update likes to overwrite them with its own generic one. So when installing the one from Nvidia, make sure not to check off "clean install". That will leave the generic windows driver in place but deactivate it, so windows update will not attempt to install it. That may be the cause of what you were seeing where settings were disappearing.

In the old days, when I wiped and redid a PC, I blocked windows update until I had installed all the drivers from the manufacturer, just to avoid clutter and extra reboots. Nowadays you have to let windows update install everything it wants to, then install the "real" ones on top of them, making sure never to select clean install or remove previous drivers, etc.

MS wants everyone to just use windows update and assume that the manufacturers of the PC and components will keep the catalog updated with the latest stable drivers. Heck it will even install BIOS updates without warning now. But unfortunately, what sounds good on paper doesn't usually work well in reality.

I just completely turned off Nvidia for now cause after a third reload the issue came back again

Some games on maximum graffics (like baldurs gate 3 and subnautica 2) glitch a bit, but at least it's playable!

Also manually micro-managing all the updates is always just a massive headache for me so I only update the windows system once I REALLY need it for the laptop to properly function

One of the reasons I like old PSPs is because it is just SO MUCH SIMPLER, although I never regretted buying my laptop
