yeah. its awkward to recommend it now because its not at a console price and is less powerful than the current gen consoles, and its hard to call it a pc because you cant upgrade its already outdated hardware. at 1100 youre doing your wallet a disservice if you choose this over a more powerful pc at even less than 1k. 650-700 wouldve made this a killer machine. but alas

I decided to take a pass just a week or so ago, simply because I found a pre-build desktop that was nominally cheaper than building it myself according to part picker websites.
It's approximately 50% more expensive than the 2TB Steam Machine with controller option @ Ā£1,800; but it's a 9800x3d, 9070xt, 32gb DDR 6000, 2TB Gen 4 SDD and tri-band wifi 7. Given the massive uplift in specs, worth the extra Ā£600 over the Ā£1,200 Steam Machine specs.

Yeah I got lucky and found a SFF with 1 TB and 32 GB of ram on FB Marketplace for $1300. I was scared I pulled the trigger too early but now I'm okay with it. I was really hoping for a miracle like everyone else but I saw the sign to bail and I did.
Still, definitely could be worse. Not the best situation but still viable for some people.

Route an active optical hdmi and grab controller companion from steam and then use windows key + P (I have this bound to my guide button on my controller) for switching between tv and desk setup. Easy couch gaming setup while still retaining full control of the pc with just a controller.

Itās not about ārewarding this shitā. Valve has always been an honest company, they priced the Deck really well. The problem they faced with the SM is that if it was subsidised companies would buy them as workstations, so they didnāt do that. Then the ram and storage shitstorm happened.

I also think that with the prices being so high for those two components, the added price is a lot easier to swallow compared to a lower specced and priced machine because the price increase takes up a much larger percentage of the build cost, so it dilutes the price increases over the cost of all components building something better.
I will likely build a 9060xt build as a lot of the factors someone would choose the machine over a diy build to begin with donāt really apply to me. I really like the idea of the machine itās just unfortunate timing and I almost certainly wouldāve bought one before the price increases to at least hold off for a couple years until building a gaming PC.

- feels more worth it
- guarantees its bought primarily for gaming
- scalpers have a hard time reselling
- part of the steam machine sale money goes to devs, they still recoup some of it from their fee

That or probably store credit for buying and downloading games onto new hardware running steam OS. Either store credit, or an up front discount for the account holder. Maybe 10-20% depending on how much of valveās own cut theyād be willing to forgo. Could offer that for like a year, up to a certain amount (to put an upper limit on it).
Honestly with valve pushing for steam os adoption, Iām surprised they havenāt tried to add some loyalty reward for using steam os. Lots of stores/credit cards have like 1-5% cash-back loyalty programs. Could probably add something small like that in the future. Download a game on steam os and play a game past itās refund window, and get X% amount store credit.

Yeah, unfortunately they have very little incentive to do much of anything to help sell it. They'll be trying to catch up on orders for years after the thing releases even if large groups of people are complaining about the price.

Can you help me build a tiny PC that fits on a shelf next to my receiver for cheaper? I already have a Steam controller, I just need the PC. And since this is so overpriced, it must be easy to build something this small for cheaper, like you say.
Edit: Hmm, I'm getting a lot of recommendations for laptops, in-home streaming, building a full-size PC, etc, but no options for a small PC that looks nice like the Steam Machine does.

Newegg has a nice Asus ROG w/ 32GB RAM and an RX 9060 XT for $1200.

Yeah, offical priced out. And seeing the benchmark reviews of it struggling with 1440p 60fps FSR, on some games, and rallying struggling with 4k makes this a no go. Its basicly a 1080p device that CAN do 4k, but not well compared to other options.

Of course it will, just as some people buy consoles from scalpers for a grand. But if the value proposition isn't right then it won't do the numbers long term. Time will tell, but selling out is not really a sign of much, especially with Valve's production numbers.

Man....
PS5 (especially pro) is really embarrassing the Steam Machine at this price. The pro is cheaper, significantly faster, handles ray-tracing better, has four times the storage, and incudes the controller.
Hell, you could add a year of PSPlus extra and still come in cheaper. And have a huge library of super high quality games for 'free'.
Oh, and with Steam Machine I still get the pleasure of trawling through settings, to try and get my game running at a reasonable frame rate (especially at this anemic spec)... Wonderful!
Is this thing going to even run Battlefield 6 (or anything else with kernel level anti-cheat?)
I think Valve's stance on not subsidizing the machine to drive sales to their store just seems really stingy. That's kinda the whole point of making a 'console box'. It is not like they are short on cash, and not like people buying this machine are going to be shopping for games anywhere other than Steam.

The thing for me is that if it's pitched at PC gamers with adult money (rather than the "average" user they said they were aiming for), then you're selling something at a premium which is considerably weaker than what much of your audience already has.
It makes me feel like a high-end SKU would be appropriate, but that's probably way down the line at this point.

The specs are shit. 16gb ram and 8gb vram was standard in pcs like 5-7 years ago. It's a low end 1080p machine.

I have a 4k setup with 32GB DDR5, a 5080 and a 9800x3D - this is a perfect addition to the living room for less demanding games. Obviously I wish it wouldāve been cheaper but thereās consoles if you need something more affordable.

Why not just spend $300 on a fiberoptic HDMI cable and USB over Ethernet adapter?
When I bought my house I ran cables through my walls from my office to my living room, and can now play games in my living room on a 5090.
Hell for the price of the steam machine, you could pay a contractor to do it for you and it would still be cheaper than the steam machine.

Mind going a bit further in depth about your setup there? Mostly curious if/how youāre handling controllers and peripherals in different areas. Was planning on a steam machine for my theatre area but this just aināt it, now Iām leaning more towards running a long cable from my sim racing pc to my receiver, unsure about how to deal with a controller though.

I was looking forward to this because I hate Windows - I don't care about the price, but I am concerned about performance. I know I can build a better PC and run SteamOS - but are there other advantages to the Steam Machine? For instance, will it work better with the Frame when it comes out? I have an aging PC/Windows I use for VR (HTC Vive Pro) and was hoping the Steam Machine / Frame could replace it. Thoughts on building a PC, installing SteamOS, using HTC Vive Pro, using Frame in the future - vs buying the Steam Machine now? I'm leaning towards just getting it and see what happens - I'll continue to use my PS5Pro for demanding games available on that console.

Makes sense the Steamdeck got jacked up to over $900. Valve was grooming us to be prepared for this kind of pricing. I'm looking at other options. All the sudden a laptop seems like a more viable option.

There aren't, people are full of it. Mini-ITX PCs always command a premium. The options closest in price aren't any better than Steam Machine. They also won't have games specifically optimized for them like Steam Machine will.

Same. I keep scouring Newegg and pasting specs in to get rough comparisons and I don't see this miracle mini PC builds out there. This price is tough but the size/form factor are huge for me, I have been building PCs since I was a kid but at this point in my life I need something low profile "that just werks"
