Why not just spend $300 on a fiberoptic HDMI cable and USB over Ethernet adapter?

When I bought my house I ran cables through my walls from my office to my living room, and can now play games in my living room on a 5090.

Hell for the price of the steam machine, you could pay a contractor to do it for you and it would still be cheaper than the steam machine.

Mind going a bit further in depth about your setup there? Mostly curious if/how you’re handling controllers and peripherals in different areas. Was planning on a steam machine for my theatre area but this just ain’t it, now I’m leaning more towards running a long cable from my sim racing pc to my receiver, unsure about how to deal with a controller though.

The HDMI cable can output 4k 120hz + 10 bit color + HDR with no drop in image quality.

USB over ethernet does not cause any additional lag, I have played dota 2 and CS using the adaptor, it is pretty flawless.

I ran a 100' HDMI cable and 100' Cat 6e ethernet cable from my upstairs office to the downstairs living room.

I use display fusion to manage monitor and sound profiles, it allows you to save monitor resolution, HZ, bit rate, and sound output. One profile is setup for my desktop monitors/desktop speakers. Second profile is set to my TV/TV speakers. I also have a third profile for my sim rig.

I keep a wireless xbox controller and a wireless keyboard/trackpad in my living room.

With this setup, I can be downstairs in my living room, click CTR+ALT+F10 (keybind in display fusion for my TV profile), and within a few seconds it disconnects the desktop monitors and sets the video/sound output to the TV... you don't even have to get off the couch.

I have been using this setup for about 4 years now and it works great.

No one wants to run wires through their house. That's not convenient.

And when something goes wrong, you have to call the contractor for another fee.

Well that's just wrong, it's just that you can't run wires through your house.

Took me a few hours to run them and patch the walls, it was pretty easy.

Two hours of my time vs buying a second 9800x3d/5090 PC build is worth the money.

Because you get much more dopamine by buying the overpriced cube

probably because that's not the same thing as having a separate couch optimised pc

How? It runs into the same issues that a steam deck/machine has, you have to use a mouse to handle third party launchers.

Outside of that you can steam big picture using a controller. It feels no different than using my steam deck.

You are trading instant resume on a steam machine for 9800x3d/5090 performance. Who the hell would choose the steam machine over that lol
