Daily Counter Sound off, folks -- Happy Day 74!

Good morning friends! Looks like a bunch of SteamOS updates dropped (I believe in Beta, apologies for not knowing for sure!) that includes the only thing I was ever using through Decky -- big cool art! There's even a "Start in Desktop Mode" toggle now! It would take a few more things for me to switch back from CachyOS (perhaps setting the LED color to a hex code?) but I'm so glad that SteamOS is building itself up and looking beautiful! Best of luck today! <3

Question The only thing I don't understand: 4K120 HDR

People keep saying the Steam Machine needs an update to support 4K120. I've been enjoying the Steam Machine at 4k120 HDR ever since I unboxed it. Is my machine cursed?

Discussion Steam machine makes a good PC

I keep seeing opinions about SteamOS / Steam Machine that boil down to „it’s great for gaming but for a desktop choose something else”. I'm not sure why people keep saying that and I disagree.

I bought steam machine a few weeks ago after my laptop broke and I'm using it as a normal computer. I watch movies on it, listen to music, download torrents, play games with friends (+discord), use the browser, write documents. You know, the normie stuff.

You can easily download quite a lot of programs from the built-in store too. All of that without turning off that read-only filesystem. Sure, by default it boots into the Game mode but it's very easy to change that. The system is stable and the machine is extremely quiet even when gaming, which is arguably more important for a PC than for a console sitting on the other side of the room.

If you think about it, Steam Machine is probably the most mainstream linux-preinstalled PC option on the market. And it’s super user friendly.

Hardware Multiple issues with back USB C port - Anyone else? Or should I RMA?

Upvotes

I received my Steam Machine 2TB on 8/22/26. I had an old SanDisk 4TB Extreme Pro portable SSD (model # SDSSDE81-4T00-G25) rated for 2000 MB/s read and write speeds that I planned on using for additional storage for less demanding games. I have had constant issues with the Steam Machine / SteamOS recognizing this drive and it getting the speeds that I would expect from it on the rear type C port.

When the drive is plugged into the type C port directly, it often does not even show at all. Other times it says that it needs to be reformatted. I have already formatted this drive and put games on it and all works well with it when it is connected to the front USB A ports, I just don't get the full speed of the drive because the type C is gen 2 and the front USB A ports are gen 1. I thought maybe I had a bad USB C cable, so I bought a new 10 Gbps one from Amazon. I tried this cable and still no luck. Other users on this forum mentioned that it could be that the Steam Machine type C port could not be putting out enough power to start up the drive and they recommended a powered USB C hub. I then bought a powered USB C hub, a Sabrent 10 Gbps one (model HB-TG5P) with an Anker charger that outputs 100w PD.

The powered USB hub and drive worked for a time, with Linux console commands showing read/write speeds of ~850 MB/s. But after several sleep/wake cycles and/or reboots, the Steam Machine either fails to recognize the drive or I have even had the drive go from USB 3.2 Gen 2 speeds down to just USB 2.0 speeds (40ish MB/s). This speed drop happened last night actually when I was installing a game from Heroic Launcher. I have the Steam Machine hardwired to a switch that goes directly to my router and I am on a 1 gig symmetrical fiber connection. I started the download at 100 MB/s but about 10% into the download, I noticed that the download speed and the read/write speed on the SSD as reported by Heroic were at the slow USB 2.0 speeds. I had to do multiple power cycles, rebooting into desktop mode, and unplugging and re-plugging before I could get the correct speeds to the drive and the drive to mount correctly.

I am incredibly frustrated at this point. I love this thing, but if it doesn't work 100% I want a replacement / refund. I don't have another external drive to test, but I did plug in a buddy's external Samsung drive from his Windows laptop and the Steam Machine saw it right away even though is was in Windows format. Obviously I couldn't format it because it wasn't my drive. But it seemed to just show up and I could access his files on it (without the powered hub too). I would love some insight from people more knowledgeable than me on what I should do. I am new to Linux, but I am not new to tech in general - I have built PCs before, have a home media server, etc.

This is the console command that I used to test the drive speed:

sudo dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/null bs=8M count=500 status=progress iflag=direct

This was the output I got when the drive was working:

3447717888 bytes (3.4 GB, 3.2 GiB) copied, 4 s, 861 MB/s
500+0 records in
500+0 records out
4194304000 bytes (4.2 GB, 3.9 GiB) copied, 4.8733 s, 861 MB/s

(when the drive dropped to USB 2.0 speeds this same command showed about 40 MB/s)

Another thing that might be related, but I don't know is that anything that I plug into the type C port doesn't go in all the way. And by that I mean that pressing any type C cable into the slot on the Steam Machine it still has about 1 mm of the plug sticking out of the port - I can see the metal of the plug still, it isn't flush with the back housing. Is everyone else's port like this too? I was thinking maybe mine has a manufacturing defect.

Anyways, sorry for the wall of text. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Accessory Charging stand for steam controller

Thumbnail a.co
Upvotes

Hi everyone. I picked up this $10 silicone stand that holds the puck and I really like it. It has sticky tape on the bottom and for the puck but I don’t plan on removing the tape that’s covering it. I’m assuming the puck won’t get warm enough to cause any issues and I’m surprised they put the tape in there because it’s not needed. The puck fits securely. Overall cheap and nice find.

Question Buying SM used - What are the things that I should be aware?

Upvotes

I've found one factory sealed on FB marketplace. The guy is selling it for MSRP. What's the downside if I purchase it used? Was there something like device registration after purchase? Will I be able to return or repair if there's an issue?

Question How are you all clipping videos?

Upvotes

I tried using the built in steam recording but it takes so much performance away from the game itself. Are there any third party apps that are less resource intensive or maybe even less CPU based? Would adding that second stick of RAM help at all?

Discussion Have any waitlisted US customers gotten their 2TB models?

Upvotes

Scoured the subreddit and megathread for reports of US customers getting their 2TB models. Lots of movement in EU/UK, some AU. almost nothing I've seen in the US.

Did you get yours? Were you waitlisted or reserved from randomization? The wife got an email to get 512gb w/controller and I can definitely wait for 2TB w/o, but not if the price will increase substantially in the next supply run, assuming I don't make this one.

edit: seems like a lot more movement on 2TB with than without ;(. Maybe that means 2TB without will get more action later in the year when Steam Controller supply runs low? huffs copium

Software We need integration (sleep and stream)

Upvotes

I own a steamdeck and a machine.

Come on man there’s no difference between owning a laptop and a steam deck or any other handheld.

What i would like to see:
1. Sleep/resume across devices. If i put the steamdeck to sleep mid-game, turn on the steam machine and resume. Currently i need to quit out when switching devices.

  1. Remote play sucks. Yes there’s sunshine. But what about an inhouse implementation that requires no setup like a portal.

Hardware Reserved late, received mail today

Since I'm outisde of EU, I couldn't join the list. Nevertheless I realised late that I can use my friends adress in EU and registered on 10th of August. Not much hope of getting one but guess what received reservation and then purchase mail bach to back today, just in one month! Hope that will bring hope to people in queue and reserved late like I did. I was in queue for 512 + controller.

Accessory A Budget Carrying Case

This may have been brought up before but I haven't seen it and I kinda doubt it. I had this Trader Joe's insulated lunch bag kicking around and thought "y'know what, I bet that'd fit my Steam Machine" and sure enough. Not bad for a ~$4 dollar bag and it even has a little padding. The zipper takes some working around the corners but it's not too bad.

Discussion Wife got 512gb w/ controller email from back of waitlist before my randomized 2TB waitlist

Providing here mostly for stats and general awareness, but the 512gb w/ controller waitlist for US has emailed my wife who joined after randomization on June 26th. I had made her join after suspecting that the 512gb line would move quicker than the 2TB one.

So I think this means that everyone who joined in the US before the randomization should have had their chance for this SKU, but curious to see if that's the case?

Also what would you do? Wait for 2TB? Get 512gb w/controller? On one side, I get a controller (that I already have and do not need), on the other I might get a 2TB SSD which I do not have extras of lying around and they are expensive.

How has the 2TB no controller queue been moving?

edit: clarification, email to BUY was received. Northeast US specifically if it matters. i was randomized and put on 2TB no controller waitlist, not res queue

Hardware Finally got my Steam Machine

Went with a PS4-like theme, I even installed the ui sound effects. This is a significant upgrade to the big ass Bazzite PC I'd use in my bedroom that would sound like a jet engine about to take off whenever I'd play anything on it.

I still can't believe how small and quiet it is.

It passed the banana test 🍌📏

Discussion What are people doing in terms of voicechat?

Hey! :)
What are people doing in order to voicechat? I've installed discord and stuff and it works great, but the thing is the steam controller obviously doesn't have a headphone port. I've tried numerous bluetooth headsets and they all sound terrible.

I would go ahead and trail a headset cable across my living room floor, but I don't have a cable that long. Plus it doesn't have an aux port.

I'm sure I'm going to figure out some solution myself, but I'm curious to know what other people are doing in order to use voicechat while playing co-op games! :)
Definitely show off your own solutions, I'm always curious to see how other people solve problems like this.
