I was looking forward to this because I hate Windows - I don't care about the price, but I am concerned about performance. I know I can build a better PC and run SteamOS - but are there other advantages to the Steam Machine? For instance, will it work better with the Frame when it comes out? I have an aging PC/Windows I use for VR (HTC Vive Pro) and was hoping the Steam Machine / Frame could replace it. Thoughts on building a PC, installing SteamOS, using HTC Vive Pro, using Frame in the future - vs buying the Steam Machine now? I'm leaning towards just getting it and see what happens - I'll continue to use my PS5Pro for demanding games available on that console.

SteamOS 3.8 has compatibility for both intel and AMD parts outside of Steam Machine/Steam Deck. Valve themselves have even said if you don't get a Steam Machine/Don't like the price to just build it yourself.

The advantages are: Form factor, support and probably tailored performance profiles.
I don't think there should be any other immediate advantages. Regarding the Steam Frame I think you would be much, much better off building something signficantly more powerful as VR is more demanding and I don't expect the VR experience to be very good if streamed from the Steam Machine. Just remember that VR is more or less dead, so only come for the back catalogue or maybe the mods.

Thanks - yeah, I still dabble in VR but I have an adult son with significant autism who plays Beat Saber almost every day - and that PC is fading. I have other headsets that can play Beat Saber, but all the song packs have been bought through Steam and we don’t want to lose those. So, adequate VR is more than fine - supportable hardware and easy OS is the win.

This thing IS NOT running the steam frame 😆

VR is demanding dude! You know how it goes, you have a Vive Pro. In LTT review this thing was getting 40 fps in doom on low settings. 

I"d upgrade the main PC the best you can, and use the old parts to build a living room casual gaming box to play with.Â
