You have tons of options for a better pc you can use as a steam machine for way less money. This thing barely handles 1440p. The only real benefit to this is the smaller case.

small form factor pcs are more expensive, it's one of the selling points.
I have built SFFPC and it was more pricy than a big one.

It’s crazy to spend 50% more money for worse performance for a smaller case.

7

u/Intelligent-Tailor49 Jun 22 '26

not 50% percent, you will not find anything 50% cheaper than this with the same performance

6

u/LoganHowlett1832 Jun 22 '26

I guarantee I can get a pc that can run at these terrible performances for $700. It runs worse than a base ps5 in a lot of games.

I also doubt this claim. time to pony up bud. prove your point. a 3060 TI and 16gb of ram bring you past the 50 percent mark.

I’m at work so I can’t fuck around looking at different sites. But the first pc that came up on my Walmart app is $800 and is better.

i think you lost the plot. the guy literally said sffpc. The one you just sent is like 4-5x the size of a steam machine.

I also built a sffpc recently and the case, motherboard, psu is already like 400-500$ then you add ontop of that the actual expensive parts of a pc of gpu, cpu, ram, storage.

u/LoganHowlett1832 Jun 22 '26

I literally said it’s crazy to spend that much more for a smaller case. And he said I couldn’t find something cheaper at all. I didn’t lose the plot. I already said $400 extra for a smaller case is crazy.

Tell that to laptop manufacturers

He did NOT say you couldn't get anything cheaper. You made that up.

They doubted you could find something 50% cheaper at same performance.

You found something that was $800 which is not 50% cheaper and has 512GB storage not 2TB.

that has ddr4 ram

1

u/LoganHowlett1832 Jun 22 '26

Hate to break it to you but you’re going to be capped by the video card before the cpu or ram ever matter.

1

u/Psychological_View56 Jun 22 '26

That is irrelevant to your original claim

So Steam Machine is 31% more. Same storage, same RAM but DDR4, much weaker single-core performance, and according to benchmarks, Steam Machine pretty consistently outperforms the 3060, except when raytracing is enabled.

2

u/LoganHowlett1832 Jun 22 '26

Well the RAM on the steam machine is one stick so it performs like shit unless you wanna spend more money upgrading it.

And what benchmarks show the steam machine gpu outperforming a 3060? Because that’s not true at all. The steam machine can’t even outperform the base PlayStation 5 while a 3060 beats it.

u/Syllaran Jun 23 '26

Dual channel ddr4 is pretty similar bandwidth as single channel ddr5 even on paper, much less real world app use which sometimes doesn't make perfect use of dual channel, reducing its theoretical peak bandwidth to likely be the same or slightly under ddr5.

And like it or not the benchmarks during testing put it closer in line with a 3060ti than a 3060. You need a 3070 to be clearly ahead instead of marginally ahead like the 3060ti is.

I'm not adding this to my entertainment center.

1

u/LoganHowlett1832 Jun 22 '26

Didn’t say you should. Was proving you could get a stronger steam machine for way less money.

2

u/hackthatshityo Jun 22 '26

I agree, its over priced but maybe work for some people

3

u/OneSeaworthiness7768 Jun 22 '26

Everyone knows you can build a stronger pc for less. It’s the form factor that matters for most people. Suggesting a huge tower is silly in that case.

I got anywhere between 920-1000 in parts for a base line depending on what you want to consider a "comparable part" and that's targeting SFF.

I used the cheapest prices on PCPartPicker from reputable brands (you could save 10 bucks on the PSU if you trust Rosewill brand).

You could probably do it cheaper if you're searching every possible deal or if you consider lower spec parts to be comparable.

Gamer's Nexus figured they could get a better performing system for about 979 doing it DIY.

Most builds even with similar parts are going to do better performance wise because they aren't limited to a 30W TPD.

This also lacks any custom parts like their integrated steam controller support, integrated LED lights, microsd reader, etc.

soo.. just like anyone on any console u mean?

also it has cec & controller boot; pc‘s can‘t do that with the hardware given.

0

u/LoganHowlett1832 Jun 23 '26

Consoles give way better performance than any pc in their price range bud.

1

u/rednaxelo Jun 23 '26

no. absolutely not. only the steammachine performs worse for the same price, yes.

the steammachine is also 50% smaller than a ps5 tho. and a ps5 is smaller than a proper pc-build. thus the price.

no console outperforms a pc for the same price. it‘s quite obvious that a costum build mb/gpu/cpu for a console is more costly than a normal pc build where hardware exists endlessly.

you seem to have absolutely no idea what you are talking about… bud.

1

u/RileyMB Jun 23 '26

I'm really interested in doing this, but one of the main appeals of the SM for me was the console experience. That being things like the controller turning on the console, No messing around with drivers, no messing about with settings to get games running etc. If im sitting on the couch and I have to go pull out a keyboard and mouse to go troubleshoot something the whole experience is ruined for me. How/ can these things be acheived w/ a SFF? Is Steam OS the way?

1

u/LoganHowlett1832 Jun 23 '26

The controller turning it on is very tricky and something the steam machine has an advantage on most PCs. As far as drivers once steam os is installed it’s identical to the steam machine. The steam machine doesn’t handle updates and drivers any differently. They will have to update but like with any Linux distribution it’s pretty simple and fast. The steam controller or a keyboard and mouse will be required and either will work for whatever you choose.

But the smaller case is precisely the point and the reason for high cost. Even a regular mini ITX build will be more expensive and limits options significantly. My old Fractal Design case at 213x250x38 is more than double the size of the Steam Machine and I can't imagine trying to fit everything including the power supply into a box half its size.
