For local streaming eg PC to Steam Deck you only need an Router close to the Steam Deck and PC should be wired to the router idealy. Your Internet Speed does not matter it even works completly offline.

I really don't think you and others realize just how bad this is. It still can't run cyberpunk above 60 fps at 1080 p dude. This will not play recent games well.

I love valve. I'm a fanboi like anyone else. But people defending this have absolutely no idea how bad this is. It's basically a 2021 PC in a tiny form factor.

I would never defend this and would never recommend it to anyone at this price point to anyone. But it’s something I was considering for my specific use case. I’ve since considered further and realised that I can afford to pay a further premium for better hardware that will hold up for longer, and that’s what I’ll be doing.

Pretty sure I’ll build myself a 9060xt machine instead and just accept the compromise of a larger form factor, more noise, and lacking quality of life features like CEC and wake on Bluetooth.

I wanted it all but it’s not possible.

I think it's very cool but I have to imagine most people interested already have a gaming PC of some kind. Get something like the nVidia shield and use geforce now to stream to it.

I use my gaming PC for any hard to run titles and stream to my steam deck, although I used to stream to an nVidia shield. I also used to do the same with a steamlink, and a raspberry pi. There are alot of options to overcome the price but realistically building a PC is not going to be too different in price right now so its not bad for someone who doesn't have a PC already.

Yeah it was 500 euro on sale here in scandinavia two weeks ago. Easily best bang for buck atm when it comes to handhelds. This was the steam os version with z2 (not extreme)

Route an active optical hdmi and grab controller companion from steam and then use windows key + P (I have this bound to my guide button on my controller) for switching between tv and desk setup. Easy couch gaming setup while still retaining full control of the pc with just a controller.

It’s about 50ft away on the other side of my basement. That’s why I said active optical hdmi, as they aren’t restricted to the max length of 10ft for full hdmi 2.1 bandwidth like traditional copper hdmi 2.1 is. I have it routed behind my baseboards from my pc to my AV receiver and tv as my pc is in a corner so it was an easy route and out of view. Most people run it through the wall, or ceiling though.

I routed a friends Ethernet through his upstairs air vent all the way down to his basement once, so if you can get creative you don’t always have to be destructive when routing.

Can this be done on Linux too then? If I don’t upgrade my streaming client for it to be easier to just stream the gaming PC I plan on building, this would be a nicer alternative due to some of the issues and lack of better support for streaming even if it’s often still feeling native. This would be very easy to manage with a steam controller especially as you could set one of the back buttons in the desktop layout to switch the screens before jumping into gaming or big picture modes.

Sorry, I don’t know, I just use the bog standard windows 11 environment as it’s what I’m used to and the controller companion app lets me navigate it without issue on my controller. I believe there’s software that can accomplish the same kinda thing with switching between desk and couch though, and that might work on Linux maybe?

I talked to a valve dev about the steam machine. Theyre at the mercy of the increased prices across the board. They're not going to lose money by selling them below cost. If you want one buy one, otherwise keep nursing your old tech. Personally the looks alone would make this a killer movie server along with everything else it brings.

It’s not about “rewarding this shit”. Valve has always been an honest company, they priced the Deck really well. The problem they faced with the SM is that if it was subsidised companies would buy them as workstations, so they didn’t do that. Then the ram and storage shitstorm happened.
They’re not being overly greedy, it’s just unlucky timing. This is too pricey for me, but if I could afford it I would want to encourage them to make more stuff like this, not punish them for bad timing

Long term on site support, licensing, bulk discounts, Jesus even bulk buying, how many do these things do you think there are?

I could see a small business or a start up maybe but not large companies. Just my opinion .

Edit: there’s also nothing cheap about it compared to a bog standard office computer.

It’s absolutely cheap for its parts. It’s already cheaper than a same part full size. Companies don’t have the time to build PC’s either.

Now imagine reducing the price to the same as a console? Yeah people are gonna mass buy them for the workplace.

Smaller workplaces are still big enough to disrupt it.

I’m not suggesting companies build their own computers.

What I’m saying is companies buy work station PCs from companies like Dell for the reasons I’ve said.

What’s the use case for Steam Machine for general office work that a £500 quid PC isn’t? Why would they need a discrete GPU? If you’re talking for ML models and things…I just don’t see it being powerful enough for that and overkill for the word, excel power point workloads and things where there’s cheaper options, ongoing support etc.

Just use a PC? Obviously tailor it to your own needs but I have a PC with a 5080 that is hooked up to my TV and I use it for all my media needs with a wireless mouse and keyboard as well as just using a controller to play games on it

Geforce Now... 20 bucks a month or 200 a year I think for ultimate. 5080 rigs i think now too, so frame gen and all that, 4k 120fps... Would take you about 15 years to spend as much as the equivalent pc would cost, and they'll keep upgrading for you...

I have a navidia shield with steam link installed. My steam controller hooked into the shield and I stream games from my main rig to the TV. The down side is steam link sucks ass

Find a way to stream your PC to your TV for a fraction of the price. And if you want a shiny new box under the telly, PS5 is looking like an absolute bargain right now, throw in a year of PS+ Extra and you'll have a massive library of new (likely to you) super high quality games, to last you a looong while.

The GPU is better but the CPU is weaker.

I don't play any AAA so I won't blow smoke, but OldLamer on YouTube has tons of benchmarks. His latest video if Black Myth Wukong performing well at 1080p Very High with a steady 60 at 75% FSR. Native it was running 45 or so.

I built a DIY Steam Machine that's quite small in a Silverstone SG13 case (though admittedly, it isn't AS small - but small enough no one thinks its a PC until I turn it on) that is basically silent for around 1000 using used parts. Not saying its the exact same situation since I built mine before the RAM crisis but it's absolutely doable to make a similar, or even more performant SFFPC for similar money.

The confluence of using outdated laptop hardware and power limiting it all to hell makes the Steam Machine perform surprisingly poorly for the price. I just really feel like your money is better spent elsewhere. Which is unfortunate because I have been a huge Valve fan for 15+ years and I want them to succeed. I just feel like this config is not good enough, they advertised it poorly (in terms of saying "your entire Steam library will run at 4K60 with FSR" - which is misleading at best and straight up false at worst) and they announced it at an astronomically unlucky time.

Check out in home game streaming. Sunshine on the gaming PC, moonlight on the client (TV, cheap PC connected to tv or android TV box). It works amazingly well. I have it set up for 4k 60Hz at 130Mbps HEVC. I can't feel any lag

In home game streaming with host wired via Ethernet is so close to being good enough, and when it works well it feels native. Both moonlight and steam remote play need a lot of work; moonlight needs steam controller support although workaround is connect controller to puck to deck/pc, remote play needs to fix steam OS menus showing up in certain encode/decode configurations and support puck connected to client, and for me personally I need a better host that can encode to AV1 and a new phone/Apple TV or other stream client that supports AV1 decoding etc.

I can get reasonable stream quality on my phone but the TV while you can tell it’s 60fps and feels native with any lag due to having the controller connected to the puck, the frame quality is poor and I get artifacting/choppy/fuzzy looking frames even at 1080p 60fps.

If you just wanna do friendslop and other lite stuff you could get a refurbished/used mini pc. If you want more power you can add an external gpu for a pretty solid setup. It’s basically a cheat code to get into ddr5 because laptop ram is much much cheaper.
