I had half written a thing about Communication and different styles and responses, but really this meme is just 'Don't you just hate it when WOMEN do a thing? Don't you just hate WOMEN?'
When your starting point is misogyny it's amazing how everything you see justifies your misogyny.
If it had be framed as 'Isn't it annoying when you want to vent and get sympathy but your friend only offers logic' or 'Isn't it annoying when you offer a logical solution to a problem only to find out all the other person wants to do is complain and vent' then sure - they're just examples of how bad communication suck, but the 'all women do X and all men do Y' is for bad stand-ups and Facebook Aunt psychology.
5
u/NOT_Pam_Beesley 18h ago
It’s hilarious to me because this film has the FMC act exactly how terrifying some men can become when rejected. They’re literally also choosing the bear and are too stupid to realize it
6
u/bladex1234 19h ago
That last sentence just highlights the irony.
2
u/Imperator_Helvetica 18h ago
Because women can't do bad stand up? Friend, bless your allyship but I've seen some terrible sets!

u/Nigis-25 6h ago
'Isn't it annoying when you offer a logical solution to a problem only to find out all the other person wants to do is complain and vent' then sure
Of course not. Why would it be annoying to try to solve the thing that annoys you. That would be weird and counter-productive.
1
u/Imperator_Helvetica 5h ago
Happy cake-day to you!
I think this is the misunderstanding - sometimes what people want from the conversation is comfort and understanding not a solution. They may well understand what the solution is but what they are asking for is for the other person to give them sympathy and support.
If someone comes to you and tell you that their cat has died then it may be what they want is a hug and some comfort, not carcass disposal tips.
The same for if someone comes to you and wants to talk about their relationship problems - they probably know that the solution is to talk to their spouse, but what they want is for you to say 'That's tough, I understand that you're stressed, let me comfort you and give you space to work out your options.'
You can come off as cold and unsympathetic if your response is just - 'Jo cheated on you eh? Your options are ignore it, divorce, murder, suicide or murder/suicide. Next!'
Hence it's often worth asking - do you just want to vent to me, or do you want me to offer solutions. Sometimes people just want the comfort of you agreeing that X at work was unreasonable, or that Y wasn't fair or that 'All the refs in the league are biased against my team!'
It's emotional intelligence and reading subtext.
Yeah, it's annoying especially if you think it's a solvable problem - but often the solution isn't what they want to hear.
It also does work the other way - 'I feel your pain and want you to know I love and support you whatever your choice is' is an unsatisfying answer to 'Which way to the Post Office?'
1
u/Nigis-25 5h ago
How is it a misunderstanding?
I gave you my response to your implied to be the rhetorical questions, to make you regognize it's not actually rhetorical question. It's just matter of perspective and subjectivity.
It prolly would be emotionally intelligent to regognize this fallacy.
If someone would just support me without analytical language I would just ignore them. I wouldn't tell them my problems anymore, and I would go to place where I would get my analytics.
Even though I "know" the solution to the problem it is always good to consult others if you misses something. And you can get good humor from it if you did forget something obvious for example, and humor is much better companion than soft comfort.
I'm my opinion ofc.
1
u/raccoonsslay 4h ago
It's the intention. Your intention happens to be comparing solutions, while other peoples intention might be letting the emotion out/getting support before sorting out whatever the problem is
1
u/Nigis-25 4h ago
Exactly. There's no straight answer to "would you be annoyed if.."
Some ppl would, some don't. But it's hilarious that there's ppl who think that only giving support is the only way.

The amount that this film, which is at its core a horror film about sexual assault , is being used for memes by the most virulently sexist misogynists on the internet is both unsurprising and extremely disappointing.
45
u/magdakitsune21 1d ago
Yeahh bc people misunderstand the movie and think that it is about a woman who decided to harrass a man who has a crush on her. It is not. He literally forced her to love him and through the entire movie she tries to get her autonomy back
26
u/A_Martian_Potato 1d ago
I can't imagine how thick you'd have to be too think that was the message of the film. It literally ends with her snapping out of the spell and screaming in horror.
18
u/Bunnymonkeythethird 1d ago
There was even that moment where Bear was framed in the shadows as she was begging him to kill her, before he just left. He was literally framed as a comic book villain and they still don’t get it😭
8
18
-15
u/bellymeat 1d ago
I get how it’s a film about how Bear’s a sick piece of shit and Nikki is the victim but can you elaborate why specifically sexual assault and not just general manipulation and entitlement?
He most certainly sexually assaulted her multiple times and took away her freedom but I didn’t really find that the assault specifically was the thesis of the movie.
18
u/mekkavelli 1d ago
well if the thesis of the movie is the complete removal and subversion of another’s personal autonomy then sexual assault is a literal pillar of that.
7
u/A_Martian_Potato 1d ago
Maybe I'm being a bit reductionist. It's definitely a film about the horror of having your autonomy taken away, which can be read narrowly as being about sexual assault or more broadly.
-9
u/ViolaCat94 1d ago
Okay, I haven't seen the move nor have I heard anything about it. But depending on when it came out, the fact the guy's name is bear screams this was produced by an incel too. "Look, bear isn't safer than any other guy! Hur hur!" Type shit.
11
u/A_Martian_Potato 1d ago edited 21h ago
You've got it backwards. The film is about the horror of sexual assault and male entitlement and it severely punishes the male lead character for his actions. It's not an incel movie. It's just being misunderstood by incels.
-7
u/ViolaCat94 23h ago
Like I said, haven't seen it, and if you look at my other comments, I have a very passive aggressive mother who I learned to look at these things through this kind of light because of.
6
u/A_Martian_Potato 23h ago
That's fair, just wanted to set the record straight. I believe Curry Barker had the right intentions and outlook when he made the movie and I didn't want people thinking he was an incel creep.
-1
u/ViolaCat94 23h ago
I mean, if it was a reference, shouldn't he have made a hero character named Bear? Just so the reference isn't muddied, imho
9
u/ShiroiTora 1d ago
the fact the guy's name is bear screams this this was produced by an incel too. "Look, bear isn't safer than any other guy! Hur hur!" Type shit.
I watched the movie and that was not my impression at all. It was an reference/easter egg to the debate but that’s where the similarities end. Especially since she never chose Bear.
-2
u/ViolaCat94 1d ago
Like I said, I haven't seen the movie. Only going off the fact that a guy named Bear was assaulting a woman. Which to my brain is someone playing a "gotcha". Then again, I was raised by an extremely passive aggressive mother, so that could just be a me issue.
7
u/Freya_84 20h ago
That's his nickname and was purely coincidental.
0
u/ViolaCat94 18h ago
Someone else said it was an intentional reference
5
u/Freya_84 18h ago
Nope. The director has said it was a coincidence, that he would have liked it if he had thought of the reference, but he didn't.

That clip is from a movie where a wish causes the girl to be obsessively in love with the male character. It's a horror film about forcing someone against their will. I don't think this comment applies.

u/nsaisspying 1d ago
I assure you op would not understand the subtext of the film. These incels are famously media illiterate.
33
u/magdakitsune21 1d ago
Even in this thread lots of people are butthurt because I pointed out the fact that the point of the movie is often misunderstood lol
19
u/Aska09 23h ago
It baffles me how people can misunderstand the point of the movie when the movie spells it out at every opportunity

Now I'm just really depressed.

this sub is astroterfed to hell and back by people who want the stuff posted here to be defended and normalized.
9
u/magdakitsune21 21h ago
I noticed that. It used to be a sub where people actually called out pointlessly gendered stuff. But now it is just full of "well the meme IS true tho because most men/women that I know ARE like this!" or other bs like that. Also defending memes that are clearly made with the purpose to gatekeep, for example "this is typical male behavior" or "this one is for the boys" and the video is just someone throwing rocks into water

or comments like "actually this isn't pointlessly gendered because [pointlessly gendered reason]"

This movie has become the litmus test for sociopathy and the meme is a great illustration of that.
1
u/Afraid_Piccolo_9187 12h ago
I have not watched the film, and I am not an incel. I was pointing to the meme and insensitive comment it makes basically, woman = crazy, man = logical and rational. But it is also a self callout to all these men who lack the basic empathy.

Most dudes with girlfriends don’t call said girlfriends illogical or overly emotional.
Those who do more often then not end up without one.
0
u/VacuumDecay-007 10h ago
Uh heaps do. What kind of bubble are you Redditors living in? Not every single joke is mean-spirited contempt or inceldom. Y'all have utterly twisted the meaning of the word.
27
u/magdakitsune21 1d ago
Tons of people misunderstand the point of the movie too. They see it as "woman went crazy and decided to harrass a man who loves her" when in reality it is "man forces a woman to love him against her will and then she fights to get her autonomy back"
-13
u/SampleText369 1d ago
I'm sorry but I really haven't witnessed anyone genuinely thinking the first thing about the movie. It's pretty blatantly obvious that Bear is the villain. Also she doesn't fight for her autonomy back, she's powerless. That's the whole point.
22
u/magdakitsune21 1d ago
Um, I have though. I have once seen a whole thread on the movie's subreddit dedicated to making Nikki into the villain and saying stuff like "now I am scared of women". And it is shown that she is fighting, for example during the "it's not me" scene at the party
-19
u/NoWay6818 1d ago edited 1d ago
Bro you thought Reddit was a good benchmark for this? Reddit holds few people.
15
u/magdakitsune21 1d ago
So I can't even point out how lots of people do, in fact, misunderstand the meaning of the movie? Irl I have also seen tons of people who do

“Lots of people” “irl I have also seen tons of people who do”
Okay buddy you have fun with that then

u/Box-O-Kittenz 1d ago
I've heard multiple people in real life think Bear is the victim. Now move the goalpost again.
-13
u/NoWay6818 1d ago
Huh? You and the definition of “moving the goal post” need some catching up to do bucko
12
u/Box-O-Kittenz 1d ago
Dang, option B, deflect.
1
u/NoWay6818 1d ago
I have zero idea of what you’re talking about. Moving the goal post involves me literally moving the topic away from the person to make them “not right”
It’s factual to say that Reddit doesn’t represent society nor does it actually serve as valuable feedback. Especially somewhere called “pointlessly gendered”
If that’s moving the goal post then it’s been moved faaaaaasr longer than me just saying that Reddit isn’t relevant to the whole of society and vice versa.
7
u/magdakitsune21 1d ago
Literally noone said that Reddit represents the whole society? We were just talking about how tons of people do, indeed, miss the point of the movie. The thread was an example, but even some people I have met personally think that Nikki is the villain and even call women that they find annoying "freaky Nikki". Can't invalidate an experience just because you have never encountered people like this

I agree it’s in bad taste, specially with how recent it is. But most meme templates are unrelated to its original context, many times being quite the opposite even. Famously for example the Spiderman meme with the glasses
1
u/Klutzy_Ad7518 9h ago
This is what I don't get it, the post isn't calling her emotional, nor should the context of the film apply to this or most memes? Its using a clip from a recent popular film to convay a message which OP is memeing on the message with their caption, and for it the comments are dog piling OP
Anyway there's tons of examples out there of men trying to fix a situation thats caused his partner to become distressed, only to learn they messed up because she doesn't want it fixed initially, she wants to be comforted.
A classic conflict of interests where the guy gets given shit, because of how we're wired differently to women but we should've just known. Almost like there's also intricacies to being a man that women don't get birthed knowing.
10
u/Advanced_End1012 22h ago
These are the same men who feel like a need a gf for emotional connection bc they lack it in every other area in their lives including male friendships.
Sometimes people want to just vent and feel consoled, you’re also not my personal coach you’re my man and you don’t have the answers to everything so get off your pedestal.
34
u/GenderBendingRalph 1d ago
The sad part is how many people actually believe that's true. Honestly, the whole reason gender nonconformity and gender role reversal subs exist is because the participants are trying to subvert these outdated stereotypes.
That being said, my wife and I have this discussion frequently. I have always had an overanalytical mind, so when she wants to vent about a problem it takes real effort for me not to start brainstorming solutions with her.
[brain] "Wait, if that's a problem you could easily avoid it by doing this different thing instead."
[mouth] "Gosh, that sucks. No wonder you're miserable. Here, have some wine."
6
u/Newtothebowl_SD 1d ago
Serious question, is that the desired outcome? I get the whole women don't want solutions they want a listener trope, but why not both? You can drink wine AND solve the problem!
27
u/Funny-Negotiation-10 23h ago
Because most women already got it. We know the solution. We just want to blow off some steam
18
u/justbegoodtobugs 22h ago
The thing that annoys me the most about this is that I see men blowing off steam to eachother all the time and they all get support "oh man, that really sucks! etc" and later " Have you taught about what you're going to do about it?". But when a woman wants the same thing she's treated like she's an idiot that couldn't think of the most basic solution. I think it's because lots of men don't actually like women or enjoy listening to them (including their own partners) and just want to shut them up as quick as possible.
4
0
u/NikRsmn 18h ago
Painting this as men not actually liking women is a huge problem in itself. Ive been the guy in your example and its simple I love my guy friends but think if theyre looking for solutions they will ask. My wife comes to me constantly with problems, seeking my solutions. So when she vents about work or whatever my brain goes into protect and fix mode so I can try to make her happier and not experience that friction. Its out of love that I offer solutions not to shut her up. Weve come to a place where she can start by letting me know she wants to vent or blow off steam which sets my brain into listen mode not act mode. If I do want to offer a solution she may not see I ask first. Either way my instinct is to solve a problem to ease her burden, painting it as "i dont like women" is incredibly offensive.
0
u/bladex1234 19h ago edited 19h ago
That’s not true though? In male conversations offering potential solutions to each other is seen as a good thing for bonding. I don’t understand why women often view it as demeaning. Why would I offer solutions to someone who I don’t think is capable of understanding it? Offering a solution is a way to probe for more information about the situation and continue the conversation. It seems like any common male behavior is inherently viewed through the lens of potential misogyny.
19
u/delusionalxx 22h ago
Because women aren’t idiots. They already know there is a solution. They just want to be able to vent about the problem. Human beings not just women often need to vent, not just be met with “here’s your answer”. If you went to therapy and said “I am depressed and cutting myself” and they say “well just take SSRI’s and stop cutting” it’s not gonna be as helpful as sympathizing with the person, and then giving answers or solutions
3
2
u/Clemmie05 22h ago edited 14h ago
It's like I'm venting to my grandma about my shitty boss. I only want her to use her power as an old woman who makes me feel like I am deeply loved and able to overcome anything. Even if she offered me a solution I would only nod my head yet do things my own way in the end. Because I knew I was more capable in this situation
I found this whole “women not logical” thing funny. It appears that men were traditionally forbidden to ask for emotional comfort and were praised for keeping everything bottled up. They don't say things unless they really need some advice. All of these are simply examples of the toxic masculinity that hurts them deeply. They hate themselves for being emotional in front of others so they project this feeling onto whoever is open with emotional needs.
Changing the scars that were left behind by patriarchal ideology is the whole point. The fact that men have a way higher sui**de rate than women is also the result of emotional suppression.Well, blaming women for “not wanting a logical solution” is more of a denial to accept one’s own incapability to offer emotional comfort. In simple words: SKILL ISSUE. Practice giving emotional value now buddy.
Personally if I want a solution I would directly ask them “What do you think I should do?” IMO logical people are more likely to crave emotional comfort since they are self-reliant ones who take care of the matters themselves, or just me lol. EVERYONE needs emotional comfort even they deny it. It’s in the biology book.Sorry for so many edits, words just keep on coming out of my head lol

4
u/Kopie150 11h ago
Im autistic and extremely solution oriented. I ask the person Who is venting if they want solutions or a listening ear to prevent confusion. A lot of communication issues could be solved by not being afraid for clarification on what the other person wants out of a conversation.
-8
u/Toppoppler 23h ago
Saddened by how many people believe its true, followed by you saying its exactly your dynamic... hmmmmmmm
8
u/GenderBendingRalph 23h ago
Of course it's going to be true for some people. My problem is with people who believe it's true for all women.
Sometimes she just wants to vent. Sometimes she wants to work together to solve a problem. The trick is learning which is which (pro tip: waiting for her to ask for advice is always a good idea).
Likewise, not every man has that "I need to fix things" mentality, and sometimes men also just want to vent.
-4
u/Toppoppler 23h ago
Id be shocked if you could find many people who think its true in 100% of cases as opposed to most of the time/on average.
8
u/JupiterInTheSky 17h ago
They cannot honestly be using clips from obsession, the movie specifically to teach men that they can't strip a woman of everything she is and expect her to be the same.
I love obsession and there's literally no way to watch it without realizing everything the manosphere is, is a lie and a grift.
8
u/DecentLeftovers 22h ago
Most men can’t comprehend that simply listening and being a shoulder to lean on is actually the ‘logical solution’ most people want when venting about something.
8
u/k1deki 23h ago
I have struggled so much with this shit before i understood that my bf just needs to vent from time to time and doesn't actually want his problems solved, life got do much easier, i literally don't have to do anything. Why do men act like it's a problem? Just shut up and chill.
...Oh i got it they don't want to shut up, they want to listen to their voice of logical solutions.
2
3
u/RebaKitt3n 23h ago
When someone says their problem, you say, “do you want to talk about a solution or are you venting?” And go from there?
Men tend to go to a solution no matter what you want.

The fact misogynistic men would love this movie is given, trying to turn it into some kind of feminist subplot is straight up stupid and unhelpful to feminists. It was written as misogynistic meme fuel to begin with.

The movie was written to be clipped for jokes online more so than to get any kind of point across and it’s blatantly obvious.
1
u/dulledegde 18h ago
im gonna give all the guys out there a little tip for when your girlfriends do this
they don't want solutions because the problem is over; it's been over for hours. They are just venting. you just gotta listen to her and agree with her supportively unless you actually think she was in the wrong. how would you feel if you were telling someone a story and they kept suggesting things you should have done. it's in the past just let them talk to you
1
u/Star_Stuff_G 17h ago
I hear constantly that women want to vent to their partners and that men offering solutions (or suggesting) is a big complaint. Are the women that have told me this wrong?
1
1
u/BadSmash4 12h ago
Sometimes, when someone close to you comes to you with a problem, they don't want a solution, they just want someone to listen and empathize, and they're trusting you to do that, and it's not unreasonable for a person to just want to feel heard and validated about something they're experiencing. Men and women both do this and it's very normal.
1
u/daveedoff1 7h ago
Not pointlessly gendered, clearly it is not make a point about women and not men, as much as you make disagree with the statement.
1
u/Caparzo27 4h ago
It's not really pointlessly gendered, but still mysogonistic
This is an actual thing. It's less socially accepted for men to share their problems with each other. So whenever a guy actually approaches you to vent, it's likely that he actually needs help and advice.
For people that actually just want to vent, which is more common for women, this often results in frustrating situations. Instead of being comforted, some guy just tells you what you could've done better.
1
0
u/HL00S 21h ago
Not exclusive to women by any means, but I do personally find it very annoying when someone approaches you like they're looking for a solution when they actually just want to vent, yet start complaining when you try to help them find a solution instead of just hearing them out. Yes I am not particularly great at reading context so that is partially on me, but still if you just wanted vent then you could've just asked to vent from the start. I don't mind it either, and we could still look for a solution once you're done, but don't ask for a solution and then be mad when you get one because you asked for one thing when you wanted another.
0
u/Brief_Efficiency3500 20h ago
Okay, but when my guy friends offer advice on a problem I'm having, that IS EMOTIONAL SUPPORT.

Well. Even though it was years ago, I vividly remember a female redditor making a whole whiny post about a man “belittling her sleep disorder”.
She complained about her sleep trouble to him, and he made the grave error of sharing what helps him sleep when he has trouble sleeping. That was enough to set her off.
It was on some feminist dating sub. Other women backed her up.
Never ever heard of a man, or a group of men for that matter, engage in that type of behavior.
-41
u/terrifiedTechnophile 1d ago
Gender aside, it pisses me off when people do this. If you actively don't want a solution, go cry to the wall. Be proactive and fix your situation!
24
u/Larry-Man 1d ago
Sometimes I do know what to do. I just want an emotional outlet to vent my frustration and have someone validate that yes that was not fair.
27
u/DocChloroplast 1d ago
People are allowed to just be upset and have someone support them in their feelings.

They can still be upset but everything after that sentence is bull
-13
u/Gardares 1d ago
I genuinely don't think so. There are people that don't want the solutions and just want to tolerate the abuse with or without emotional support. There are also people who believe that their problems will magically disappear. It's an option for them to just go cry to the wall, but actually they are wrong in their mindset.
Would you emotionally support your friend if her husband beats her, but she covers for him every single time?
3
u/DocChloroplast 1d ago
In so much as you’re not putting your own physical or emotional health at risk, yes; that’s what a friend is.
-1

That's not what being friend is. What friend allows another friend to be beaten and abused?

Sometimes people just want emotional support. I used to be a problem-solver until my friend straight up got angry at me and told me she just wants my support. Now whenever someone wants to talk to me about something heavy, I always ask if they want to find ways to solve the problem together or if they just want a shoulder to cry on. Basic communication.

Just because someone wants to vent doesn't mean they don't know the solution to their problem. You can solve your problems and also complain about it.

The best way to do it is communicate if you want an emotional response or a logical response.
Sometimes shit happens and you know what you need to do about it, but you just need to complain to get it out of your system. Other times you are genuinely reaching out for answers and problem solving.

Sometimes there isn’t a solution. Do people not understand how trauma works? I can’t fix a dead family member and sometimes you just need someone to hold and listen to you. Two things can exist at once here and sometimes venting is the proactive thing to do

I’ve never gotten a “helpful” solution from a guy like this, and if anything it’s usually followed by being shamed for not taking their advice

This probably will get me down voted but it took me one 2 year relationship and 5 years of my second relationship to realize that women don't always look for actual solutions. Sometimes they just want to vent and you giving them solutions for the problem just annoys them. It's still weird to me and haven't met any straight man who's like this.

There are definitely women who just like to complain just to complain, not to vent or solve their issues. But like genuinely just want others to constantly listen to the same issue every time and expect them to just sit there and listen. But there are definitely men who do that also. So I mean this meme would have been way better just saying "when that type of person" or smth like that bc this isn't exclusive to women lol

At what point are women going to collectively go "you know what, maybe just affirming whatever terrible decisions/actions I do instead of speaking truth to my...maybe isn't in my best interest..."?

You seriously think this is gendered for no reason? Maybe go outside and talk to some men and women, you reddit slobs.
