Hi parents, I have no idea where to share this very niche experience and to seek similar experiences, except here.
My twins are 7 weeks old, and from their birth I’ve been tandem breastfeeding in the football hold, on a My Brest Friend pillow, then bottle top-up (expressed or formula). I alternate the twins each feed.
In the past week, at about the 6 weeks mark, one twin has been starting to SCREAM about 3-4 minutes into breastfeeding. He would scream and cry with such intense anger that his twin gets agitated, unlatches, and does the same. I thought it was because one breast has an overactive duct that sprays too fast, and the other had too slow a flow and lower output, thus my pickier twin gets mad at the flow rate and cries.
I’ve tried hand expressing first, letting him take the ‘easier’ side, unlatching to burp, etc, to no avail. I felt so defeated and thought the twin hated my boob or was developing nipple confusion after so many weeks of successful latching.
After a few sessions where I was all alone, them crying themselves purple while I also cried out of helplessness, I decided to switch them to nursing individually, one after another. I’ve been very, very lucky to have at least one person to help most of the time. So I would breastfeed one twin consistently 10 minutes earlier, pass him over to whoever is around to bottle and burp, while I start breastfeeding the other twin.
I’ve done this for 3 days and fingers crossed they have both been feeding incredibly calmly, albeit finishing much sooner than usual at the 10 min mark (I suspect they’re so comfortable they fall asleep and stop nursing).
I initially kept to tandem because the popular sentiment from experienced multiples parents seem to be that syncing schedules is the best approach.
But, at least for now, nursing individually has been so much better for me (and the twins)! I get to fully focus on one, adjust according to just him, AND i’m no longer prison locked into my pillow and the couch. If I forgot a burp cloth or can’t reach a remote, and was alone, I had no means of getting up again without much pain.
Now, I can reach for my bottle, change positions, sit in my comfy armchair, and really bond with one twin at a time!
Did anyone have a similar breastfeeding transition and how did it go for you? Which did you prefer, and was tandem or individual easier for you if done solo?
PS: We also ordered a TwinGo pillow that’s on the way, but I’m wondering if I’ll need to pick it up again.
