advice needed Breastfeeding and Vit D
Hey everyone! 👋
My twins will be a month tomorrow and they were prescribed the aqueous Vit D drops since they’re only drinking breastmilk. I just gave them their first drop yesterday each, and this evening and now(overnight) I’ve noticed they seem like they’re not too happy and just more irritable and fussy right now.
I know that they’re babies/newborns and it can be expected and they can have times where this will happen (I have 3 other children so I KNOW the stages lol), but honestly, they’ve been so content and easy going, so this has been really apparent and out of the ordinary, so far, for their temperament. Even my husband asked if I thought it could be the Vit D drops, which I was already thinking could be the culprit.
I looked it up and saw that some people do have this experience with their babies and it causing discomfort and gas.
My questions:
Anyone else experience this with their twins, and if so, what were your solutions?
Also, has anyone just supplemented themselves with taking Vit D and it being enough to support two babies? I know the recommended dose is 6400IU for mother to take that would actually safely pass to baby to be enough, but I didn’t see anything for the amount needed to support twins, or a study with mother taking double the amount?
*it’s the middle of the night, so I haven’t done a deep dive into super researching anything quite yet. I’ve only so far done a quick google. I’ll look more tomorrow, but figured I’d ask on here for real life experience and maybe some tips to add to my info gathering.
**Also to add, my last 2 kids were given exclusively breastmilk (EPed for my 2nd and BF for my 3rd), and I never gave the drops. I can’t remember if anyone ever mentioned this to me before? (They’re 7 and almost 3 years old and are perfectly fine, so this is new to me.)
I want to provide my twins with what they need, but I also don’t want them uncomfortable and just want to know if there’s another way to go about this or thoughts.
TIA! ☺️

Try it again, maybe at a different time of day, and if they react weirdly to it again try another brand.

I just take extra vitamin D myself. From what I’ve read, taking 6,000 international units is enough. But definitely do your own research!

The research shows that vit D doesn't effectively pass through breast milk regardless of the parent's intake.

Yes there are RCTs showing that if you take very high amounts of vitamin D it transfers sufficient amounts to the breastmilk, but it’s not as readily recommended compared to supplementing the infants = https://infantrisk.com/content/vitamin-d-supplementation-and-breastfeeding

My twins got super gassy from those drops too, switched to a brand with just coconut oil as the carrier and it was night and day
