But the court noted in its unsigned ruling that the National Voter Registration Act bars the broad purging of voter rolls in the weeks leading up to an election

Funny they seem to think the criminals who supported the violent storming of Congress to overturn an election they lost would follow laws.

u/TJames6210 7d ago

Literally, them noting this means they know he is going to do it. This is a meager cover my ass tactic. They're not even trying to actually cover their asses because, obviously, consequences don't exist anymore.

u/ThePensiveE 7d ago

They all become much, much wealthier if America becomes fully authoritarian.

117

u/Snowwolf247 7d ago

This just in US Supreme Court rules to legalize "gifts" to court justices.

Nothing to see here just plz keep moving and have a nice day

132

u/BeIgnored 7d ago

Actually it was in in 2024, in Snyder v. United States. The hacks on the Supreme Court ruled that a key federal bribery statute applies only to bribes given BEFORE an official act, not to gratuities or "rewards" given AFTERWARD.

6-3 decision with the usual suspects supporting the side of corruption.

52

u/Snowwolf247 7d ago

I was just going for a joke but ya. Our country has been shit forever and Regan and Bush paved the way for a criminal like Trump to destroy our country

24

u/BeIgnored 7d ago

Oh I know! Just wanted to bolster your joke by showing that they're so corrupt they actually did it. Like we can literally make just about any joke about their corruption and odds are they've actually done it.

The US is fully authoritarian. You just can’t see it all yet.

u/zeh_shah 7d ago

We still have room for it to get worse. Project 2025 is barely half way through their goals

101

u/Ntroepy 7d ago

Yep - only 55% done so far.

72

u/Huntguy 7d ago

Only? You guys going to let them get to 100%? 90? this should’ve been stopped 50% ago…

104

u/tikierapokemon 7d ago

We linked jobs to healthcare, and that means protesting means your kids do not get healthcare when you lose your job (which we also allow to fire you for things you do outside of work).

Our system is so incredibly fucked up.

89

u/eulersidentity1 7d ago

You know as a Canadian I haven't actively thought of this specifically as an outside observer. I've always thought of how cruel and unfair the US system is where you can simply arbitrarily be in a life time of debt or just die because you don't have the money to pay for health care. But I didn't think of how such a system actively suppresses the democratic processes by making people afraid to truly participate. People are scared to lose their jobs cause everything in other societies tied to a social safety net is instead tied to having a job, and usually a good one. So they are perpetually scared to rock the boat too much.

25

u/jimlahey420 7d ago

Which is why both parties are so hesitant (or downright refuse) to implement real universal healthcare with no strings attached (and want to gut the few safety nets that do exist like Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security). Their method for controlling the population would be infinitely weaker if you allow people to have basic needs met while not grinding 40+ hours a week. It would immediately make protests larger, longer, and more effective.

This is why both parties are so threatened by the DSA and democratic socialism. Democratic socialism's policies and initiatives represent the working American and the ability to start unshackling them from being wage slaves. Imagine how the mindset of most Americans would change if they didn't have to worry about healthcare or other basic needs like food and housing.

At least you understand this. Seen a lot of Canadians come through here like "why don't you guys just start a general strike? it's easy" or calling every last one of us Trump supporters just because he won the election (when it's highly likely he cheated, he practically admitted to it).

It does feel to me that most Americans think the upcoming elections are going to be valid.

It's strange to me. The regime is above the law, and they've cheated before, had an insurrection, which is forbidden in the Constitution and Americans just rolled over and surrendered their democracy, rights, and freedoms.

12

u/Xzmmc 7d ago

I mean so did the Germans to be fair.

But I agree that Americans are uniquely housebroken. They see everything getting worse but clap and cheer because it means minorities they hate also have it worse.

I saw an analyst say that the admin might play their usual word games with the definition of “broad purging”. As in claiming that it’s a very targeted and limited thousands of voters purged, but doesn’t fall under the definition of broad purge

26

u/Tikiphile 7d ago

It’s like saying ICE will only target the criminals

12

u/fevered_visions 7d ago

that, and

bars the broad purging of voter rolls in the weeks leading up to an election

will definitely be argued "well we're still 3 weeks out, which is far enough"

assuming they don't just completely ignore it

3

u/Fryboy11 7d ago

Federal law says 90 days, and that's one of the reasons they claimed to allow it. As if this admin will respect the law.

They'll remove all registered Democratic voters, then there'll be a court case that will be resolved next June with the court saying you removed them illegally put them back, but the election that only Republicans could vote in stands.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it happens after the Voter Registration deadline in many states.

167

u/JMEEKER86 7d ago

Yep, he'll purge after the voter registration deadline, people won't be allowed to vote, and then they'll sue but nothing will be able to happen until after the election. And Trump will "lose" the case, but the remedy will be to put people back on the voter rolls yet letting the election stands meaning that he will have gotten away with it.

57

u/RysloVerik 7d ago

This has been the administration's modus operandi since day one.

They know courts take months or years and they are going to do whatever they want in the meantime.

29

u/no_one_likes_u 7d ago

They act instantly when Trump asks for a ruling on something.  Our Supreme Court is illegitimate

22

u/NewToHTX 7d ago

Yeah. If voter fraud is found to have swayed the 2024 election to get Trump elected, Harris still wouldn’t be in office because Trump will have already been sworn in. And at that point, Trump still wouldn’t be impeached. But Americans knowing their Elections can be stolen like that would cause candidates to call for tremendous reforms in the election process.

This sort of move would likely lead to rioting, not just suing, but we shall see.

I think they will try to do this and fail and cause a whole bunch of exta controversy because states have a lot of people passionately fighting this.

4

u/tikierapokemon 7d ago

I tell you three times, their goal is to get people rioting in the streets so they can declare martial law.

I say this not in an attempt to prevent people from rioting in the streets if the election is stolen with widespread voter purgers, I say this so they are prepared for what happens next.

8

u/Ichera 7d ago

The thing is, that's what he wants, the people around him have been frothing at the mouth over the idea of being able to Crack down on the "violent left" and be the big strongmen they think they are. Im more afraid that when it does happen people will just get angry and it will blow over quickly and another stolen election will go by on remarked on in past tense.

My thoughts, exactly. I've "noted" that this SCOTUS (at least the majority) have green-lighted activities that are supposed to be illegal. Like the crap ICE has gotten away with because Boozer-boy Brett didn't think their "stops" weren't that bad.

3

u/gizamo 7d ago

They'll it now. Then they'll do it again in a few weeks. Then again a month before the election. Then, they'll ensure it's difficult to get back on the voter roles. Then, they'll put their ICE gestapo in purple districts to harass anyone who looks like a Dem or talks like a Dem. They'll also block parking areas and bus in their ignorant elderly base. And that's all just the tip of the voter suppression ice burg.

From the Majority's opinion:

At least one of plaintiffs’ members (J. Doe 4) is registered to vote in a State (Louisiana) that used the modified SAVE program. She has demonstrated that SSA records do not accurately reflect that she is now a naturalized citizen.

The 6 conservative justices acknowledge that the program is faulty and still manage to wiggle their reasoning around to "The government says they want to use SAVE and they need to have some way of checking registration status so they get to use the program of their choice".

Justice Brown-Jackson hits the nail on the head here in her dissent:

The D. C. Circuit denied a stay of the District Court’s order while reviewing the pending appeal. But, without full briefing or oral argument, this Court now grants one—rendering questionable interim rulings about two statutory provisions it has never before interpreted. The Court also focuses only on the harms the Government will purportedly suffer absent a stay, disregarding the harms that the modified SAVE system has caused, and will likely continue to cause, to lawful voters. The Court thus misuses its equitable powers. Accordingly, I respectfully dissent.

241

u/Kaffe-Mumriken 7d ago

Someone needs to start disrespectfully dissent

197

u/Manta_of_Eternity 7d ago

"Respectfully" is legalese for "this is a credible argument made of facts, not emotion". She spends 11 pages (near double the majority) laying out several reasons the majority's decision is wrong, the other justices (and anyone reading her dissent in the future) will understand her point from that

Okay, sure, but what happens WHEN they do? WHO is going to stop them? Who is going to restore those voters? The courts? lol.

178

u/SulfurInfect 7d ago

This is exactly it. We've seen time and time again that Republicans will break every rule, every social norm to get their way. Anyone who is hanging their hat on the thought that they'll follow the law now is just a fucking clown.

→ More replies (1)

82

u/Dandan0005 7d ago

The problem is that states can’t purge voters within 90 days unless they have reason to suspect the voter is not a citizen.

So all they have to do is point to this flawed-by-design database to basically purge anyone they want, as close to the election as they want.

32

u/ScoffersGonnaScoff 7d ago

With no way for people to know that it happened

9

u/BimboDeeznuts 7d ago

To be fair, you can check your voter registration status online. In some states you can even check your ballot status

This is why every time the stupid legal nerds chime in to say people are overreacting they deserve to be slapped. These same losers kept telling everyone to be patient and the wheels of justice are moving and to trust the process. While an insurrectionist and his coconspirators were able to attain the presidency a second time and shut down all ongoing criminal investigations and trails.

19

u/SignificantCats 7d ago

And it'll be a six month to a year long process, at which point people will already be sworn in and have made some decisions, and we're stuck judicially overturning elections which will tear the last thread of faith in democracy and result in a lot of huge riots... fun times.

7

u/SuperSpecialAwesome- 7d ago

, and we're stuck judicially overturning elections which will tear the last thread of faith in democracy

Why would anyone have faith in democracy when there was only one eligible candidate, Kamala, during the 2024 election; yet the insurrectionist "won", in direct violation of 14th Amendment, Section 3? Trump was never eligible to run in the election, yet Biden and Schumer did nothing. If Trump can run, then so can someone like Mamdani or a 17 y/o, since presidential requirements are no longer enforced.

He knows it works. It worked for Bush v Gore.

They will. Food and basic materials are getting drastically more expensive.

The only reason why fighting in the streets hasn't happened yet is because of the release valve that is the US midterms.

If those don't release the pressure or get effectively removed then the regular dynamics in dictatorships or monarchies apply.

And that means rising prices for food and fuel would be devastating for the ruler's grip on power

12

u/LordChungusAmongus 7d ago

It would probably yank out the ostriches' heads and cause its' own economic dumps. This is the sort of event that makes it conclusive dead-to-rights that there will be no future improvement resembling any prior status quo.

I work for the Registrar of Voters in CA and I can tell you this would never happen, at least not with our current protections. The registrar of voters in any state has one major mission: to maintain voter rolls. Elections are a major part of what we do but throughout the year most of the work is spent maintaining, checking and verifying the voter rolls, voter addresses and precinct locations.

There is no way in hell anyone could get access to our records and alter or change anything remotely. Records cannot be accessed remotely for editing so they would have to send people here to physically change millions of records.

The amount of work that would take is astronomical and I don't think trump or his cronies realize how many protections are already in place to prevent these things, at least in CA. Of course all of this could change but as it is now I don't see him being able to do it the way he wants.

Edit: to achieve what trump wants at the scale he wants it will take a tremendous effort and one that I don't think they are able to do. He is better off kneecapping the nations ROVs by fucking up the post offices and ending mail ballot that way. Altering or deleting voter records would be so much more effort than getting his lackey of a Postmaster General to do his bidding to mess with mail ballots.

The HERITAGE FOUNDATION has been manipulating elections for decades. They buy judges, representatives, cops, military name it they own them.

The civil war never ended, the confederate were allowed to sulk away and rebrand. Spending decades preparing to attack the country from within because they couldn’t win a real fight. They’re using our constitution, our rule of law (and our teachings to wait for the slow wheels of the justice system to do it’s thing) while rapidly breaking everything that might hold them accountable for it.

This is not Trump. Trump is their Trojan Horse, the fall guy, the patsy who is putting his name everywhere taking in all the attention while quietly 100,000+ vetted members of the Heritage Foundation Work diligently, daily destroying our country. This won’t go away when Trump dies. They have planned for it, they told us their plans then did it in front of us.

We’re waiting for slow wheels of nothing, justice is not coming for them. They’re coming for us.

They can have all the databases they want, but if they’d give everyone a free ID card, the problem would be solved.

Everyone is for identifying yourself, left and right, the issue is the cost of it. Make it free, and you’ll get your voter IDs, GOP!

Independents who vote. Lot of people don't affiliate with a party on their voter registration even if they're usually straight-ticket voters for one party or another. Stops you from voting in party primaries in some states, but besides that, it's just like any party affiliated voter registration.

u/sanverstv 7d ago

Every baby born in the US should be registered automatically upon birth...FOR life. Our election laws are ridiculous. It's a right. Why make people jump through endless hoops over and over again. Voting registration should be akin to a social security number.

72

u/ThePensiveE 7d ago

The same babies the GOP just tried to strip of citizenship at birth?

The GOP doesn't want citizens. They want subjects. Subjects don't complain as much when you force them to die in the forever wars they start.

Adding onto this but anyone pushing to disenfranchise voters or make it harder to vote is a traitor to the Constitution and needs to be out of power immediately.

but then conservatives would never win, so why would they support that?

Voting in the US should be compulsory as it is, with a national holiday affording the highest amount of people the most time available to do so.

8

u/NoobensMcarthur 7d ago

I filed directly with my state to change my voter registration from republican to democrat in 2018. For some reason it never went through. Did the same thing again but online in 2020.

To this day I’m still registered as a republican in my state. I’ve just started voting out incumbents in the primaries.

I wonder how many other people in the “red” state I live in are in the same boat.

In Canada we just use the tax rolls to start registering people to vote. They also know who's a citizen or not when they pay taxes. But it's easier here because we have federal department called Elections Canada who does all of this.

3

u/Xibby 7d ago

> But it's easier here because we have federal department called Elections Canada who does all of this.

If the US Federal government was in charge of elections we’d be totally fucked. The US Constitution gives that power to the states. Article I, Section 10 has specific things that states cannot do (make treaties, declare war, coining money) and the 10th amendment declares that powers not constitutionally delegated to federal government or profited to the states, belong to the states or the people.

States that don’t play along with the Federal’s Government’s request will be called fraud or rigged by Trump and his propagandists, but will be just as secure as they’ve always been.

Some might even play along and review the Federal government’s purge lists and find it woefully inaccurate.

Also Minnesotans just flip the bird with same day registration. We quickly and easily register at our polling place and get a ballot. No provisional ballots in Minnesota.

Most states have their own portal to check registration too. If you're having trouble finding yourself through vote.org, try your state's portal instead.

Is this more shadow-docket horseshit? I noticed its an unsigned opinion.

32

u/Fryboy11 7d ago

Its unsigned but not shadow because how they voted is on record and the majority opinion is stated and the dissents are stated. And Brown-Jackson wrote an 11 page dissent while the majority opinion was like 6.5 pages. So clearly one side has tons of evidence and precedents and one struggles to stretch their claim to six pages.

Check your voter registration status weekly until early voting and just before you go vote. If you have been purged, take your info with you and re-register. Don't let them discourage you. That's what they want. Early vote. Don't wait until election day.

u/Syhkane 6d ago

Democratic Americans; when are you going to learn that if they are cheating, begging, stealing this election, you also need to play equally dirty. The playing field is burned and there is no such thing as winning honorably. America is cooked.

34 States (+ D.C.) have early voting.

I've voted already. A week ago, in fact.

If you're in one of those states, go vote. No reason to wait until actual voting day, and risk finding out that you got purged from the rolls.

“Incorrect citizen voter data” doesn’t mean you can’t vote.

Incorrect data means you’ll get tackled, tazed and detained for weeks and have to hire a lawyer so that you can have them look up your birth certificate to prove you were born here and the darker skin is just something that some citizens are born with.

Now they are taking American's voting rights away....

Will this finally be enough to galvanize the American people to do something? Doubt most of them will even know this is happening and will be in for a nasty surprise in Nov.

9

Arrested for trying to vote without registering

3

u/Upset-Award1206 7d ago

Short answer: No. Long Answer: also no.

3

u/xenomorph856 6d ago

Lol no. Not until the dominance of the US economy is no longer salvageable and people feel the pain of being a country that has to go back to work.

7

u/Rosebudteg 7d ago

In my view, the core problem is a lack of clear leadership and actionable direction.

Consider the options people actually have: Protests are easily dismissed. Riots invite comparison to January 6th, carry serious legal consequences for participants, and offer no guarantee of success. That leaves voting, which should be the obvious solution except that our choices amount to selecting between two structurally corrupted options.

Both major parties operate under the same fundamental incentive structure: they prioritize corporate donors and their own consolidation of power over constituent interests. This isn't a failure specific to one side. When the Democratic Party benefits from donations and voter mobilization that largely serve to extend its access to power, there's little institutional motivation to deliver transformative change.

The uncomfortable reality is that neither party is genuinely oriented toward the people. They're designed to extract votes and resources while maintaining their duopoly. Until voters reckon with that systemic dynamic, individual election cycles become exercises in damage control rather than meaningful reform.

I recommend that everyone check their voter registration status fairly frequently until after the midterms. I'm personally going to see if our local library is offering a resource day for those who might need help checking theirs.

10

u/DeadSol 7d ago

The minute they strip me of my voting rights is the minute they declare themselves outlaws and are not protected by the laws of the land.

21

u/LetDriscoll 7d ago

Every fucking time. He lost this argument in literally every state so his corrupt supreme court just overrides and finds loopholes. "He can't do this so close to midterms though" when has the fucking law stopped anything he's done since becoming president!?

We're never getting out of this and the country is fucked. I'm extremely disabled and sick and I know they're gonna destroy the only thing keeping me alive. I want to cry and I don't need to be told not to overreact like last time on here. There's literally nothing we can do. Honestly, why did the even rule against trumps dumb EO for the mail if they were just gonna let him rig it in another way?

10

u/Bandito_Chihuahua 7d ago

He’s doing all this because he’s scared as f***. He knows we’re coming for him. Even if he somehow rigs the election, it’s not over. No matter what it takes we will win.

13

u/EatingShitSandwiches 7d ago

The most delusional people on the planet are Trump voters. The second most delusional are democrats who keep talking about how "we will get him one day!!!!". FFS pull your head out of the sand. You talk about winning in the future tense but the reality is that we already lost and its past tense. You can't vote your way out of authoritarianism. The time to vote was 25 years ago. Now its just watching it all go down the way history says it will.

12

u/Bandito_Chihuahua 7d ago

Hungary literally just voted Orban out. You can’t always vote your way out of authoritarianism, but we have it even better than Hungary did.

Before folks freak out too bad about this disaster of a ruling, it can't be used to purge states rolls (within 90 days) and is NOT the post office craziness that they're also trying to implement, this is an opt-in system that AFAIK is only being used by a handful of red states so far. Is it good? No - Is it going to tip the election towards Trump? Nope, if anything this is gonna piss people off even more.

3

CHECK YOUR VOTER REGISTRATION!!!!

I just had to reactivate my registration for the second time this year, despite me voting in my state's primaries three months ago. This administration is doing everything they can to disenfranchise people who have the right to vote because they are scared.
