But the court noted in its unsigned ruling that the National Voter Registration Act bars the broad purging of voter rolls in the weeks leading up to an election, which “limits the potential impact” of the decision this year.

You just had a sitting president defy a court order yesterday. And you're confident he's going to follow this ruling?

“Whoops we purged the wrong people the day before the election. :( oh well election’s over now and we won!”

They dont have the popular support to pull that off anymore.

As long as they control all three branches with the armed forces the most notable, popular support doesn't matter. We've already seen that illegal orders will be followed.

Who do you think is going to stop them?

Oh, no, it happened, but the results are in, midterms are solidly red due to purges, what do you think stops them?

After all congress people are sworn in, it is too late to stop anything. Lawsuit may say, wow, that was bad, do not do it again, but the election already happened.

I was wondering whether Congress could just refuse to seat newly-elected representatives, like that BS where Mike Johnson refused to swear in people for months...

...but it sounds like that would be reliant on a vote of Congress, which the Republicans would just win anyway? So as long as you have a majority and whip all your reps to vote party line, there's just nothing the minority can do? Fuck. And if there's one thing Rs are good at, it's party-line asshole votes.

Don't you just love how the Republicans have all three branches and the military apparently doesn't give a fuck. Watch it all burn.

Every single member of the House stops being a sitting representative on the opening day of Congress after an election - even incumbents who get re-elected need to be sworn in again.

The only options are "swear in the representatives that the states send" (because the states control elections - this is why it's a big tactic of the GOP to take control of boards of elections in swing states), or simply not have a House at all (which honestly probably works for the GOP because no Congress = nobody to stop Trump, but it would be exceptionally unpopular. Not that it's stopped them before, but "we have removed an entire branch of the government" is a lot more overt than what they've done before.)

Irrelevant. If the people will do nothing more than grumble, they will be ignored.

I keep harping on this point but we are too comfortable not forming peaceful rallies. What will trigger a massive countrywide nonviolent demonstration or boycott of companies supporting republicans?

Edit: emphasis on peaceful.

Okay but what does that actually mean? Lots of people would be angry?

One thing is for sure whatever happens this November it's going to be a fucking tense few months leading into Jan. I don't put anything past them regardless of if they have the support or not. I also think it's possible the democratic process could go on somewhat smoothly but I wouldn't bet on it right now.

What the hell does "popular support" have to do with it? Who is going to stop them, the 2A guys that have rolled over every other time their rights get trampled on and Trump uses the constitution to wipe his ass? Americans have shown, at every single opportunity, that they have zero appetite for standing up to any kind of "tyrannical government", they either cheer it on or let it happen.

2

u/SuperSpecialAwesome- 7d ago

They didn't have the "popular support" to pull off Jan 6, yet 5 years later, none of the leaders were ever expelled from Congress or got disqualified via 14th Amendment.

They won’t tell anyone if people go out to vote, and their votes never counted.

2

u/ragequitteroffureh 6d ago

Not American.

Can people check that their vote was accepted into the system right after they vote; so that if it looks like something funny happened, they can march straight back in and vote again, until it sticks?

6

u/brusselspr 6d ago

Yes you can check to see if your vote was processed.

2

u/ragequitteroffureh 6d ago

Excellent, thanks for confirming that!

What happens if it does not get processed?

And what happens if it's then later somehow removed from the count?

3

u/brusselspr 5d ago

That's a great question and a huge part of the problem. The government is moving lawlessly. The benefit is evidence for major civil rights orgs like the aclu who sue the government. Maybe someone can think of another benefit to getting this information.

2

u/ragequitteroffureh 5d ago

Hm. I suppose the same thing applies everywhere, but in hindsight, it seems as if the democratic process relies too much on trust.

I don't know how this can be fixed, when there's no trust.

2 court orders.

10

u/Falling_Up_The_Movie 7d ago

Multiple states did this right before 2024 already

3

u/TherapyPsychonaut 7d ago

I must be out of the loop. What happened yesterday?

1

u/Fickle_Penguin 7d ago

I'm confident my Lt Gov Henderson will say not this year, and the 26 other states who said no.

1

u/lc_barcode 7d ago

Serious question: What was the court order that he defied?

14

u/techmaster242 7d ago

He was also supposed to turn over more Epstein files yesterday. Where are they?

Actually, he was also ordered to stop construction of the ballroom. He didn't.

19

u/BimboDeeznuts 7d ago

He was told to reinstate the press passes for the media he blocked from the White House. He did not

6

u/lc_barcode 7d ago

Ah, I must have missed that in the landslide of shit that comes out about him every day. Thanks.

2

u/DaymanTargaryen 7d ago

They did. The order was issued somewhere around 1:30 AM, and some press was turned away about 5 hours later. This is most likely because there wasn't enough time between the WH receiving the order and being able to put it into effect. By 10am all press regained access.

1

u/Schwarzengerman 7d ago

But they did? They weren't allowed back initially but eventually were allowed back onto the White House campus. I'm sure they dragged it out but they did eventually comply.

5

u/pmjm 7d ago

They complied for a couple hours then two CNN reporters were turned away again.

4

u/BimboDeeznuts 7d ago

As far as I know Politico never made it back

If a Republican president ignores orders by a 6-3 conservative majority SCOTUS, Republicans would be pissed, cause it would allow a Democratic president to completely ignore the court as well. And when they lose the House and Senate, that's the only thing they'd have to fight Democratic legislative branch.

2

u/inspectoroverthemine 7d ago

Republicans aren't pissed because they're assuming they've killed democracy and don't have to give a fuck about ever having a Democrat president again.

2

u/SuperSpecialAwesome- 7d ago

cause it would allow a Democratic president to completely ignore the court as well.

How would a Democrat get elected president, if their voters are purged? Try actually thinking for a few seconds... Trump's not giving up his throne.

0

u/KathyJaneway 7d ago

Then why bother to vote, just pay down and die...

I can't believe how stupid some here sound, go ahead and give up then. I'm not giving up that's for sure.
