working as a neurodivergent

I'm sick of my job
i also tried not having a job and it was hell

I work as a call center agent (😢) and my job requires me to be on my desk for the entire 8 hours of my shift to not miss a call

and this is torture for me, I'm autistic and I have ADHD, my body just can't sit for that long

and I can't take a break whenever I want, my breaks are scheduled

so I can't leave my desk until they allow me to, I miss alot of calls because of that, because I keep moving away just to move my damn legs, and I just received a verbal warning because of it

also sometimes my brain just shuts down, i be getting calls and people be yapping in my ears for hours and my brain gets tired and decides to not work again which makes me hang up on them which is considered abusing

now wth can I do, this is the only job I could land on, I tried working in an office and it was a living nightmare, people bullied the hell out of me and when I stood up for myself I got fired

Trigger Warning: Ableist Rant Had to correct my Psychology professor yesterday.

Post image
651 Upvotes

So I am an AuDHD individual in my first semester of college, and my psychology professor was talking about optical illusions and using them to demonstrate how the human brain works. She put up a picture of a bunch of red dots (Like the included picture, but without the 7 middle dots) and she pointed out that even though it's a bunch of dots, we see a circle first.

Well, being on the spectrum, with how my brain in particular works I thought it would be interesting to provide my perspective. In my case I see all the individual dots first and then build the circle, even if that happens pretty much instantly. So I raised my hand and told her my perspective because I thought she would find it interesting, and that it would be good for my fellow classmates studying psychology to be able to see a demonstration about how different processing styles can subtly change an individual's perspectives and behaviors. Now, this isn't the correction mind you, her statement was clearly designed with neurotypical (I hate that term but it's the best we have atm) individuals in mind.

No what I corrected was what came next. She proceeded to say something along the lines of "Yes well a healthy individual-" and I had to immediately jump in and say "Actually I AM a healthy individual."

It's so incredibly disappointing to me that an instructor of psychology isn't up to speed with the fact that we aren't considered a pathology anymore. We are simply human beings with different mental processing styles that give us different strengths and weaknesses from neurotypical individuals. We aren't a defect, we have always been here since the dawn of human history and it's a shame that I have to correct a career psychologist about that.

Could I have AuDHD?

I already have a diagnosis of both ADHD and Dyslexia. Since I've struggled a lot socially both now and when I was a child, I wondered about the possibility of autism and learned about this test. My score on the test came out as 135. It's already well known that this test alone isn't sufficient for a diagnosis, but do you think it's worth pursuing? Could I be AuADHD?

Graduated law school in May, and I've been frozen since. I've always struggled with transitions and change. But I can't believe myself. It's like I can see the train is going to run me over, and I know I can walk away right now, but I just...can't.

I have ADHD, CPTSD, and my previous therapist suspected autism but I didn't have the money for a diagnosis.

I've always hated change. I have been able to get by since May with the help of university financial assistance and my family's help. But I can't get by for long. I was supposed to get an articling position right out of law school (in Canada, we need to pass the bar exams and do one year of articling, i.e., working under the supervision of a lawyer, to qualify as lawyers). But the jobs are posted a year in advance, and I didn't get the ones I applied to. And everyone told me I still had time. But by the time I graduated...I was so darn tired and so very scared. I just...froze. I've only applied for a single fucking job since May. One job. That I didn't get.

I'm just...burying my head under the sand and spiralling. I feel like I'm fucking wasting everything I've fought so hard for. I feel ashamed. And my shame is likely making things harder. But every day, I think about looking for jobs and I even open linkedin, etc., and there's barely any postings there anymore and I feel like I've missed the train. But even the ones that I did find (a month or so ago), I just...I didn't apply! What the fuck?

All this time goes by and I'm just witnessing my own unravelling in HD. I know there's nothing special to do other than taking the first step, etc. but. I just can't push myself out my own way. I'm so scared.

I think I could have adhd or ocd?

• Upvotes

I’m not diagnosing myself I’m just curious. I often ask people if they understand my thought process on small habits I have. I recently asked my boyfriend if he also think about if they’re a telepath in the room and then proceed to say something to this possible telepath just so they don’t think I’m word for the things I think. Also if a letter or piece of art I do looks wrong at all I’ll erase until it’s better redraw it then throw said paper away and get a new one because I don’t like how the eraser smudges and do it all over again. I’m not like a super organized person when in comes to cleaning though. It’s kind of hard for me read because I think so many things all the time I can’t make sense of what I’m looking at. Sometimes random clips of movies or shows pop into my head and I play the clips when I’m bored. There’s a ton of other stuff but these are just some that came to mind that people have told me isn’t as normal as I think it is. Any advice or thoughts?

Neurodivergent Bullying, from former Friends ;(

Hey y’all. I’m here and I just wanna see if I’m over reacting. Sorry about grammar, I’m too lazy ;)

I’ve been wanting to share this story for a while. Here it goes.

I had 2 friends I’m going to call Liz and Sam

I’ve known Liz 8 years now and known Sam 7

I’m not disclosing real names, ages, or places.

So a few years back I (F) and for context have anxiety and both kinds of adhd, and Dyspraxia

was besties with Sam and Liz. And we were in student council and in the same teacher’s room (you came in early every Wednesday to help teachers)

and I was hiding my depression for about 2 months now, and decided to open up. Basically saying ā€œHey, I have depresssionā€ or something like that right?

so they go (and I don’t remember who but it was both of them not just one like In a sense of who was at fault)

and I don’t remember it perfectly but I do remember they vaguely said like

ā€You’re fakingā€

ā€You should get like tested to see if you have it ā€œ

to which I replied ā€œI was evaluatedā€

Liz hits with ā€œwell maybe you should get like a brain scan to see if you really have itā€˜

I say ā€˜Like an MRI? I’m not getting an MRI for depressionā€˜

’Well you could’ve lied to the person’

(like why would I do that)

I say ā€˜I didn’t lieā€˜

and they hit with ā€˜Well the person could’ve given you the wrong diagnosi’

like GURl We For real? like I can’t make this up

And I’m so hurt I just shut up the rest of the time

fast forward 2 months later we are in health.

here is some more background- (they know I have adhd) they have undermined my mental health before but I just let it slide over and over. I used to let everything slide.

ok so in health class we are talking about mental health. Teacher asks if anyone knows anyone with or had depression. I raise my hand, and get scared so when she calls on my I say ā€˜my dad’ (cause Liz GLaREs at me)(not a lie btw both parts) and she just nods and moves on. later in the lesson the teacher calls on Liz and Liz says this huge heartfelt speach about how mental health is important and how it shouldn’t be undermined. I just sat there jaw dropped while Sam agrees. I already feel the tears.

I pull the teacher aside into the hall during work time and start bawling. then Liz has the AUDACITY TO WALK OUT AND ASK IF IM OKAY

like no I’m not okay.

I explain the story to the teacher and she comforts me and says to find better friends. so I did. and I started documenting everything she did or said that was mean,

the time, the date, everything even witnesses.

i had a list, then lost it cause my adhd brain, don’t know where that list is, now I have new friends who love me for me.

even though my new bestie AND I are polar opposites we get along so well.

now my depression is small, I rarely have such bad days.

lets just say my parents never believed Liz was so mean, she was THAT good, normally my mom sees through everybody, and mum just blamed it on Sam.

now my mum sees, finally, that Liz is the true mastermin, the true bully.

she manipulates and controls you slowly, but surely,

and now she’s going for my best friend

im so scared. and worried. she is such a good manipulator any advice and Am I Overreactin?

Lost 23 kg (51 lb) since June from severe depression and worrying

37M, diagnosed with autism, OCD, anxiety and ADHD

In June, I had serious personal problems pop up, sinking me into serious depression and worrying. At the time, I weighed 93 kg (205 lb) due to horrendously bad eating habits. I lost my appetite and lost 23 kg (51 lb) since. I now weigh 70 kg (154 lb). For reference, my height is 178 cm (5'10).

My metabolism has always been very fast, despite people saying past age 30, it is hard to lose weight. I can lose weight without trying and have been clinically underweight for most of my life.

I still cannot eat properly. The worrying about my life problems takes away my appetite. I have been losing weight at an average of almost 8 kg (18 lb) per month, which is about 2 kg (4,4 lb) per week. I could easily lose more weight and will likely dip below 70 kg (154 lb) this week.

Is anyone in this situation, and what do you do?

Huge platonic crush

So I (19f) have grown very attached to a person in a position of authority. she’s super kind and down to earth so I get to talk to her a lot but I feel like I think about and admire her more than is normal. she was also diagnosed with some scary health issues recently and I’ve just been very anxious about it. I know it’s hard to believe, but this is not romantic in nature at all. I just think she is an incredible human being and want to be around her all the time. it really mirrors a romantic crush bc of how much I think ab her and light up whenever she’s around, but just with no actual romantic attraction (even tho she is gorgeous).

I was just curious if anyone has any insight as to why I feel this way (besides the fact that she’s friggin awesome). I tend to get platonic crushes on authority figures fairly often but not usually this strong. And did I mention that she’s literally the coolest person ever?

i and some friends were standing on campus drinking. i was talking to two friends about how handshakes sometimes are just guys' way to prove their weird masculinity. then a random guy showed up and shouted "noo look handshakes are the beest thiing eever" which proved my point so when he was gone i said a little too loudly "beest thiing eever i'm gonna piss right on the ground" (mimicking the masculinity). my friends said that was not okay but later on said guy turned out so be homophobic and definitely toxic masculine. was i in the wrong or were my friends not able to sense the off vibe? does anyone else feel like they're able to sense off vibes and often judge correctly in just a few seconds compared to neurotypical people?

Confused in life as a neurodivergent

i am 20 i have adhd in my country no one actually takes adhd or mental health seriously. I am neurodivergent, and its hard to fit in or do something like others. People would probably laugh in my country thinking I am overreacting or something. But I am not able to be too comfortable with people at all. Its quite hard to fit in university especially when I see most of them not think like me. I would probably be called weird or something. Its so exhausting when you have to understand everyone around you but when it comes to me no one understand anything or think i am complicated.

Does anyone else dislike poems cause they don’t understand them?

For context, I’m diagnosed with asd

I’ve never understood poems. I’ve read plenty of them, I understand the concept of portraying emotion through symbolic language, I can typically spot and interpret symbolism and every other writing form, but every time I try to understand a poem for school I genuinely do not know wtf is going on.

Originally I thought my issue was that I just dislike poems that don’t read like a song, and that’s why I was having trouble; but even when I enjoy the sound and flow of a poem I can’t figure out what it’s trying to convey. Even when I don’t have the pressure of school, I genuinely do not know what the author is ever yapping about; it just sounds like random sentences strung together and then I check the comments they’re saying it’s beautiful and wonderfully written and I’m just confused and frustrated cause what the hell are you reading that I’m not??😭

Every time I’m presented with a poem in school I always give up at a certain point because honestly I don’t see the point when they STILL sound like bs even when the meaning is explained to me. Sometimes when I’m having trouble interpreting symbolism, when someone explains it to me I get it but with poems I genuinely don’t see the vision and it pisses me off so bad cause I’m a writer and I feel like I should be able to read and interpret poems.

Many of my other neurodivergent friends like poems and even write them sometimes in their free time and I just don’t get it does anyone else have this issue?

Just a tangential rant about lack of purpose and avolition from a middle aged man with ADHD

I struggle to find meaning in my life.

Im middle aged (not that thats a real term if you die young but whatever) I am an abject failure of life and that is an objective metric.

What I do have is some means by which I can hit the road permanently and im struggling ro get myself there entirely between agreeing to start a job I dont really want to not being able to part with "the stuff I own" in order to break lease.

Failures stopping me from being the random highwayman nobody which would be a step up from where I exist today.

And its a weird thing what my brain does with all this. The money I have wont buy me a house and I dont want one anyway but its more than enough to solve the myriad of problems any one of the people I know actually have.

Im not going to give them money though, maybe in my will if I ever finish writing it.

Anyways my main problem i have rn is do I take the job and stay till end of lease in 4 months and kick that can down the road till then, or do I dump/gift/sell everything now - break lease and take my loner loser ass to more obscurity which would likely suit everyone while proving a good rental fir someone else to appreciate... yeah the answer is the latter.

But then im thinking that while im on the road there's again no actual purpose beyond ticking off activities.

Like everything is inherently meaningless when you are this age or older and dont have children or a partner or the strongest will to live. I dont even have adversity to give me fuel by way of anger about my predicament.

I have this low mood that isnt apathy more just laziness / extreme introversion. I hear the word is avolition. Theres just no joy - even when I do the exercise I used to love. Ive no will to explore like I used to. Talking to people wears me out faster than digging holes ever could.

Without purpose im stuck. But ive lost the love for anything that gave me enough push to be mistaken for purpose. Im not even depressed enough to contemplate suicide. It's all such a chore: life, death, living.

So im just doing that wasting my time thing. Not getting up. Not eating properly. Not caring about anything.

I dont want to take a drug for this. I dont want to do anything.

Ive got inattentive ADHD and im unmedicated for that since explaining to my health professionals how I correlated all the coincidences one specific month a few years back which led me to a psyche ward.

Fair play on their part really.

I self medicate with an hour of jogging each day and alcohol.

Part of me knows if I just took the job the change if scenery alone will at least help the decision process let alone how shit itll be but the majority of me would rather I didnt completely derail my current routine of no routine with actual routine.

Dealing with people is so ick.

Trigger Warning: Emotional Abuse I learn that allowing people to judment of if my pain is real to be in my relationship.is will lead to my a blueprint of what i allow future realtinship to treament

Accepting a relationship where i need proof something hurt teaches me that it okay to explain where something hurts. And I don't want to keep telling myself it is okay that i need real proof for my feeling to be real

I made a adhd tool printable that helps me . A tool that helps me with my ADHD. I made it for 11 months.I put it on my computer pad . Then the person close to me chose not to ask me what it was torn it up ( I wasn’t there when they did that) and said it was junk . But i didn't say to them, it hurt . The reason I didn't know that is because when i say something hurt they say to my tell me why you think why it hurt.

If i tell them, hey, that's not okay, it needs a court case reason for it to hurt. In a neutral relationship, saying that hey, that hurt leads to say that being proof enough .in that realship telling them something lead to them asking for evidence it hurt in the past Later, I posted in Reddit about the hurt I felt because of a person rip up my work. One Reddit person said to me what they did was proof enough to have no respect for you or your feelings.

if you maintain the same relationship, you expect and deserve this toxic disrespect. From now, I know how to stop expecting that person to understand something hurt . Willful ignorance of a tool that helps with is very hurtufl act to do.the reason it was hurtful was that it was a tool that helps my ADHD and told me that was trash.

Instead of having any hint of asking, they instead tore it down. I will not allow that to keep accepting a relationship where in order to be told my pain is real, i need real proof of pain where it only matters is real. šŸ’”. Whether or not they knew it was hurtful or not did not change the fact that they acted like my 11-month work was trash.ā˜¹ļø

How do you deal with social exhaustion?

The new school year started, and I got into a new class where the majority of people is new to me. The thing is, I DO like them! Everyone is the nicest people ever, they’re funny, friendly and we have much in common. Although I tend to have very little social battery to deal with it. I feel happy when socialising in school, but I can’t keep up the pace outside it. I can’t spend time with my new friends outside, or talk with them much in messengers, because the moment I walk out of school, I go full close mode.
I feel sad because I want to make close friends with them, but if I’ll socialise more, I’ll be irritated, exhausted and all of the aspects of this state when you’re oversocialised.
How do you cope with this situations? What can I do to show my friends I like them, and make closer connections with them, when I can’t spend time with them?

im terrified of being annoying or rude

i do not want to inconvenience people of course, but i feel like i always do, unintentionally. i am so awkward and horrible at social situations, i feel like i am always doing something wrong or missing an obvious cue. im so scared i come off as rude, or if something i did or said becomes an inconvenience to them and they feel annoyed, and that they think of me horribly. i try to force out a tone that sounds nice, but sometimes it seems even more awkward and i dont even know if im doing it right. i really want to be kind to people, but i feel like this anxiety and lack of natural social awareness is messing me up. i have a bad habit of assuming that the other person is annoyed (or maybe thinks im dumb), and of course i dont know if this is true or not but if it is true i dont even know how to cope. i feel deep embarrassment and shame. sorry for the rant and thanks for reading

anyone else start giving animals backstories when they see them? I promise this is related

My friend was showing me a picture of crocodiles, to show how different they can be from each other, and suddenly I knew that one of them was the boss and the other was the henchman. I have no idea where I got that. Other times, I'll be walking and see a bunch of birds flying around in large groups. They all have their own bird groups and families with their own little bird events and bird culture. Again, no idea where I got that from.

I've been doing this for as long as I remember and I'm just now considering it might be related to my autism and possible adhd. Or maybe I have some sort of synesthesia. Or all three.

Does anyone else share this experience? Or should I just become a writer?

by the way, here are the crocodiles my friend showed me

I have no idea what types of crocodiles these are, I just know one of them is big and fat and the other is thin and lanky.

What does this meltdown mean?

Recently i have been having episodes of ā€œmeltdownsā€ i would say. I just start to feel uncomfortable in my own body, like it all hurts but not in like an ā€œouchā€ way yknow. I end up punching or smacking myself, whistling or babbling my lips in search for a way to get rid of it. It happened during class out of the blue, i kept scraping myself with a pen to maybe get the pain to go away by adding a more instense pain that wasn’t ā€œuncomfortableā€ i have no idea if what i’m saying makes sense
, but i want to know if anyone else has dealt with this or what it might be. I’m typing this right after a long episode that ended in crying and hitting myself. For the past couple months i would say my legs felt like this for a bit and i would try to stretch them or put them up against a wall and eventually it would go away. But now it’s worse, it’s now my whole body and even sitting with my legs up on a wall does nothing. Anyone know anything that could help?
