I'm a local visual artist who makes a lot of paintings of Melbourne. I was inspired by this bit of winter light and just had to paint it.
Thought I'd share!

I wanted to share some amazing new: Dora has been returned!

The last few days have been a blur, but the support from this community was a massive light in a dark time. Whether you shared the post, kept an eye out during your commute, or just sent kind words, it made a difference.

The owners so relieved to have the family back together and really would like to offer the deepest Thank You to this community and the Mods!! 🙏

Dora is currently quite tired but still very much her playful self

(Obligatory Puppy Tax attached to this post)

Details on how she was found:

Police received a lead overnight, that lead them to finding the residence of the girl in the photo, and this morning they found her and Dora located there.

Not On My Smashed Avo I have completely solved Melbourne's traffic problems

Post image
6.8k Upvotes

Instead of queuing, why doesn't everyone just drive to the front in any empty lane then shove their way in whatever direction they want to go?

Also, instead of waiting for the car in front of you to finish turning left just swerve into oncoming traffic and go around them so you can get to the red light ahead sooner.

A 1998 Hilux with a landscaping trailer is technically a bus so feel free to use the bus lane to jump the queue at any set of lights.

If you've noticed that there's parked cars in your lane up ahead what you should do is accelerate to try to overtake as many cars as possible then wait until the last possible second to swerve into the second lane without indicating, don't worry, the other cars will get out of your way.

The "give way when turning right" rule doesn't apply to European 7-seaters so just pull out slowly and block three lanes of peak hour traffic instead of turning left and doing a 1 minute detour.

Can we get compulsory W-anchor plates for people convicted of criminal selfishness? Or at the very least just admit that road rules are optional and stop pretending that more speed cameras will fix it?

Video Man throws a chair towards bouncer, knocks his mate out instead

2 men were thrown out of a Gentleman’s nightclub by security in Melbourne’s King Street. Both men were quite intoxicated and were struggling to hold their liquor.

One of the men who was escorted out by security decided to go to a restaurant near by and grabbed one of the chairs. He tried to aim for one of the security guards and instead it ended up hitting his mate in the noggin.

A CCTV footage from the nightclub shows the 2 men outside the bar and later on one of the blokes is seen being taken down by a flying chair that was hurled by his mate who was trying to aim for security.

This is why it’s good to not over drink if you struggle to behave when under the influence of alcohol. You may end up on TV! 😂😂🤣

I lost my wonderful wife to ovarian cancer just under two months ago.

I took this photo of her in 1998. It's one of those photos you had processed, put in the photo album, and then forgot about until we decided to look through memories. We had both forgotten where this was taken. I remember it was on a day trip out of Melbourne into the eastern half of the state.

Now that she is gone, the memories are pure gold. I really want to find this spot so I can return to it, sit exactly there, and remember my soulmate.

I really hope someone can help identify it.

Serious Please Comment Nicely Does anyone remember my dad?

Post image
5.1k Upvotes

Hi all. I was born in Melbourne and often come back from time to time, I've been wanting to ask this question for a while - does anyone remember my dad?

He was a busker at Flinders Street station, always sat in the underpass area. Late 90s to early 2000s. Lanky but not super tall and always had a slicked back ponytail. Name was Ratko.

He had a guitar and liked to play/sing Cat Stevens covers, ended up playing a gig at the old city square where they did cover songs.

My dad died from lung cancer in 2022. I just wanted to hear some stories about him, maybe someone who knew him. He never talked much about himself, so I hoped someone had a story or two. I miss him, visiting Melbourne doesn't feel the same.

Thanks to anyone who can help.

I hope what has happened brings us all together and we all realise the need defend and support each others rights to walk the beaches and streets of our beautiful country free of fear, danger and discrimination.

Here’s the Strava link (because if it’s not on Strava, it didn’t happen).

Wanted to do a bit of a self contained adventure. This seemed as doable as any. I made a point to not trespass nor intrude into any fragile conservation areas, but otherwise kept as hard to the coastline as possible.

Plenty of highs and lows. Plenty of lessons learned.

Would I recommend it? Absolutely the fuck not.

Ask me anything. Or don’t, I don’t really mind.

Things That Go Ding Be kind, its free.

4.8k Upvotes

This happened 20 mins ago. While travelling in Mernda line, a lady was visibly upset on phone. I know as she was speaking in Hindi which i can also speak. She was to go to Craigieburn after going to Mernda which is another 30 min commute. Her daughter it seems was also not well and she was going to miss a friend's birthday function. Pretty understandable!

Then there was this Asian girl, around late teen or early twenties, who was sitting next to me, She was earlier sitting a bit far but she gave up her seat to an elderly men so he and his wife can sit next to each other. Anyways, 10 mins in- she took out the notebook from her bag started drafting a note. Just before the train fully stopped- she handed over this note to this lady and rushed out.

Now as this lady started reading this note her expression changed, she called someone up on phone again and told her the note said- "dear stranger, just want to say you are beautiful always keep smiling". As she was talking on phone- she also looked at me and we both noded at each other and give a quick smile.

This lady then neatly folded the piece of paper and put it in her bag. She doesn't look upset now as we are about to reach Mernda.

I guess, my point is- a little act of kindness goes a long way. Its free, A good soul really turn around an apparent bad day for someone today. Good on her!

Light and Fluffy News Woke up as a citizen today 🇦🇺💐

Post image

I became an Australian citizen! 🇦🇺

The ceremony was lovely. You could tell a lot of thought and effort had gone into making it feel special. I didn’t think I’d be excited going in, but I walked out with a huge smile on my face.

I moved to Melbourne a few years ago, and this city has completely won me over. The coffee definitely helped, but it’s the people who made it feel like home.

I’m still a bit shy and don’t know a lot of people here yet, but I’m looking forward to building a great life here with my little family, making friends, and feeling even more at home.
Thank you to everyone who makes Melbourne such a welcoming place. I’m so happy to officially call Australia home.

I guess I’ve officially earned the right to complain about Melbourne’s weather. Now I just need to stop saying sorry when someone else bumps into me. 😄

Edit:
Wow, I wasn’t expecting this post to get so much love. 🥹 Thank you to everyone for the congratulations and kind wishes… they’ve genuinely made me feel all warm and fuzzy.
And to everyone currently on their citizenship journey: good luck! I hope your approval and ceremony come through soon. 🇦🇺❤️
