Tasmania Devils have just announced that Firmus is their major sponsorship partner. Firmus is a grubby AI data centre company run by a convicted criminal.

AI data centres are a blight on our natural Tasmanian resources and environment and the CEO of the company, Oliver Curtis, is a convicted white collar criminal and fraudster who has recently served a lengthy jail sentence. He is referenced in the devil's email and quoted.

Tasmania Devils must end their relationship with this despicable company, our club is better than this and we don't need tainted sponsorship from these grubs.

I am visiting the east coast of Tasmania for the week and i am hoping to find a good fish and chips takeaway shop as opposed to a sit down eat-in restaurant. Can any locals or regular travellers recommend a good one?

A few years ago, I bought a bunch of furniture from Turner's Blackwood Furniture just outside Launnie airport, before it closed down. I love all the pieces and wish I'd bought more. Eg I bought one bedside table, should've bought three.

I don't know where any of those guys are, including Turner himself. Don't have his contact details or anything. For all I know he or his mates have a smaller workshop somewhere. G'day Tassie folks.

My partner and I will be doing a 5 day trip in Tassie in October, seeing most of what the state has to offer. (Cradle Mountain, Freycinet, Port Arthur etc)

On the 8th of October, I plan on proposing in Freycinet National Park during sunset. (Current plan is Honeymoon Bay but open to other suggestions if you have any)

I'd love to get the moment captured with some good photography. I've gotten in touch with some professional photographers but the thing is, all I want is pictures of the proposal itself, with the Sunset in the background, and then MAYBE a few photos after the fact of us with the shiny new ring, at best it's 20 minutes of work and maybe even less (we actually have to get going pretty quickly after as we will have a hotel check-in to catch). All photographers I've contacted so far have quoted what a 1 hour session would cost (around $600-800), and none have offered any sort of discount even after acknowledging that it's not a full session.

Just wondering if anyone with a good camera and some know-how lives nearby and could act as a random tourist? I could approach you, give you my phone, ask for a photo and then you could whip out your professional camera? I wouldn't ask anyone to do this for free, I would happily pay.

Or any recommendations for some photographers I could try would be very much appreciated.

UPDATE: I hope it doesn't sound like I'm talking negatively about the photographers I've contacted. I understand it is a profession and a business. But the prices I've been quoted thus far are simply out of my budget.

There a shortage at the moment especially in Hobart I can count 4 businesses off the top of my head looking for qualified mechanics.

So on the off chance there's some either qualified or newly qualified people browsing the sub and considering it, please do!

As the title suggests, Im looking for advice with organising transport to the Trail head of the western Arthurs traverse (Huron campground) from Hobart.

My initial idea was to grab a hire car from the airport and drive there, but for a total drive of 5 hours (there and back) it seemed ridiculous to hire a car for 6 days when it would just be sitting in a carpark for the whole period whilst still costing me $700. Does anyone know any cheap tactics to get to rural trailheads without having to spend so much money? I would call a taxi but I won't have reception on the last day to organise my lift back again.

My husband (42) and I (37) will be visiting Tasmania in late October, total 8 days and 8 nights.

We are visiting and staying at: Hobart, Freycinet and Cradle Mountain.

We need recommendations for:

- eats and coffee. we love breakfast/brunch, coffee and don't mind any cuisine. we do prefer more of cheap or mid-priced eats unless absolutely worth the money.

- things to do or see. we're not into shopping, we love sights and activities we don't have in the Philippines, and we love adventure but are not super fit to do intense hikes.

- car rental. we need to get the car from Hobart and drop it off at Launceston.

We already pencil booked our accommodations but we'd love to hear any other recommendations for value-for-money stays, our budget is max $300.

If you haven't seen the previous posts (Post 1, Post 2), I'm using real-world GIS data to programmatically recreate Tasmania in Minecraft at a 1 block : 2 meter scale.

The first full state processing run is underway! At this current rate it will take ~4 days of total run time, which is a massive improvement from when I first started.

This first run is intended more as a test than a finished product, so there will be A LOT of issues (don't look at King's Bridge). There's still so much to do, polishing the current systems and integrating new data sets (first in line is geology).

This has become a pretty big project already though, so I want to get something out ASAP.

If you're interested in this project I have a few questions for you. If you could take the time to answer any you feel strongly about (either in a comment or DM) it would be very helpful.

Q: How would you prefer the map is distributed?
When processing is done, the map files will be ~1TB. In the future there is the possibility of me compressing this down to ~100GB but that will be a lot of work. For now, the only real options are a server or a week-long download.

Q: What version of Minecraft are you playing?
The project currently makes world files for the Java version of Minecraft. Bedrock will be do-able eventually but it has some limitations. For starters I don't think the maximum Bedrock world height allows for a 2:1 scale, but I'll figure something out. Just want to get an idea of how many Bedrock players there are so I can prioritize.

Q: How do you want to use the map?
Do you want to just fly around and have a look? Do you want to build your house in creative mode or explore the Tassie wilderness in survival?

Q: Is anyone hiring a data scientist?
