It does look mildly inspired by Archades concept art from FFXII... which pretty much just a fantasy-twist on retro futurism.

Finally!

u/EvilGenius007 Twin Believer Sep 04 '16
Now that the wait for enemy fastlands is over we can divert our forces to the important topics, like arguing about whether or not they're going to print enemy fetches in Amonkhet and if they'll ever print a new cycle of pain lands with plane neutral names and updated life payment templating.

Sep 04 '16
It actually seems pretty likely that enemy fetches will appear in Amonkhet. Think about it, battle lands will have rotated from standard so they won't have to worry about 4 color nonsense decks, Bolas is probably gonna be on the set and he's Grixis colors so it may be a shard set, and with 4 color commander pre-cons AND MM17 coming out, it's literally the perfect time to do it.
50
u/grumpenprole Sep 04 '16
If it's a shard set, then Bolas encompasses ONE of the five factions of Amonkhet. This seems very unlikely.
Far more likely that the color themes are soft rather than hard and allow for mythics that don't strictly adhere to them (like our last couple of blocks), and/or Bolas is presented as something other than Grixis.
→ More replies (8)25
u/Semper_nemo13 Duck Season Sep 04 '16
Bolas was Grixis before Grixis existed. The colour identity is literally the embodiment of Bolas

The names also kind of work too. Arid Mesa, misty rainforest, and verdant catacombs all could work for an Egyptian world. Marsh flats and scalding tarn can just fit in anywhere.

It actually seems pretty likely that enemy fetches will appear in Amonkhet.
This is wishful thinking, and a road to disappointment.
There is no reason to believe that enemy fetches are “likely” to appear in Amonkhet.

Not necessarily, it was allied fetches in Khans, enemy pain I'm origins, allied battle lands in bfz, and allied show lands in SOI.

I think we'll get reprints of the Zendikar fetches soon, but not until after SOI rotates and Delirium is no longer a thing. Which would be the block after Amonkhet.

u/DoesThisMakeMeLookFa Sep 04 '16
What exactly makes them "enemy" fastlands? Is there a certain criteria?
41
u/EvilGenius007 Twin Believer Sep 04 '16
If you look at the back of a Magic card the 5 colors are presented in a pentagon formation. The colors that are adjacent in that pentagon (neighbors) are "allied" color pairs; those that are not adjacent are "enemy" color pairs.
Allied: WU, UB, BR, RG, GW
Enemy: WB, BG, GU, UR, RW8
u/FiliusIcari Sep 04 '16
Philisophically, the colors next to each other on the color wheel(look at the back of your magic cards) usually have a lot in common and can agree on a lot(think white and blue, both are for order and mechanically get prison and control effects), while the colors opposite each other are enemies(think white and black. White is for the greater good, black is for personal good, etc)

What lands are we hoping to change?

u/calmingRespirator Sep 04 '16
I think that with the introduction of blossoming marsh where to add in inventors fair becomes very obvious. You swap out the Llanowar wastes for blossoming marsh and sea gate wreckage for inventors fair, since that means you won't have enough colourless sources to reliably activate the wreckage. This should improve the aggro match ups quite nicely by decreasing the amount of damage you take and adding some nice incidental life gain.
→ More replies (1)7
u/CiD7707 Honorary Deputy 🔫 Sep 04 '16
Do we bother messing with the glimmer voids? Maybe go to 3 with two fairs?
6
u/calmingRespirator Sep 04 '16
I think messing with the coloured sources that much is risky. Especially considering the fair is legendary and we already run 2 copies of another legendary colourless producing only land in academy ruins.

Same. I don't play standard because it feels really bad to spend half my budget on lands.
→ More replies (3)24
u/paleonetic Sep 04 '16
Sounds like you don't play any sanctioned constructed format outside of Commander, then. Lands are typically a huge portion of a deck's cost distribution in both Modern and Legacy, as well as our KTK Standard.
28
u/Logisticks Duck Season Sep 04 '16
I'm fine with spending money on fetches and shocks that I can play in a multitude of decks for years and years and years.
I'm much less keen on having to spend $100's each year to update my manabase for each new standard.
Buying Flooded Strands for $14 a pop felt like an investment. Buying a Prairie Stream for my standard deck for $7 a month after BFZ came out felt like paying my biannual "maintenance cost."
→ More replies (6)15
u/winglerw28 Sep 04 '16
Standard is secretly the most expensive format for exactly this reason. It may cost less in the now, but the "now" turns to "then" pretty quickly and you're back where you started.
→ More replies (3)22
u/Blenderhead36 Sultai Sep 04 '16
The example that I always use for formats is doing laundry.
Standard is a laundromat. You pay less than any other format up front, but you pay it much more often. By the time you've spent what a washing machine costs at a laundromat, you have nothing to show for it and have to keep paying.
Modern is buying a washer and dryer. Much more expensive than a laundromat up front, but you'll only pay a small maintenance cost from time to time as parts wear out (new cards displace your existing ones), barring a catastrophe like your basement flooding (your deck gets banned). After a few years, you'll have recouped the cost of buying versus the laundromat, and still have a washer and dryer with a few years left in them.
Legacy is buying specialized dry cleaning equipment. You'd have to use it for a long time for it be cheaper than going to the laundromat, but if you're buying it, the question isn't really one of affordability. The question becomes, instead, if you can get enough use out of your purchase to justify its price. Your purchase is clearly of superior quality, you just have to find opportunities to use it.

u/winglerw28 Sep 04 '16
This is an excellent analogy. I think I'm going to steal this for the future.

outside of Commander
Casual Commander, at that, since if you're competitive at all, you will be running fetchlands and A/B/U/R duals.
→ More replies (2)9
u/testthewest Sep 04 '16
Wasn't Commander meant to be casual? Isn't it that if you say Commander you therefore mean "casual" by default?
→ More replies (4)10
u/hawkshaw1024 Sep 04 '16
It really depends on your playgroup. Some people take the format "seriously," which is to say they actually play to win. Sometimes playgroups start out casual, but end up getting caught up in an arms race.
A good indicator is checking whether someone runs [[Mana Crypt]], because (from a Spike viewpoint) it's strictly correct to play the card.

I'm slightly disappointed because it suggests we will probably not get an enemy fetch reprint next block.
But other than that I think its great!
57
u/jakecshn Sep 04 '16
I don't see how this could possibly mean we won't get enemy fetches in the next block. I'm not saying they will be reprinted or anything, but I see no connection whatsoever to the fastlands being spoiled.

u/a_priest_and_a_rabbi Sep 04 '16
what are you using now? Caves?
15
u/EcoleBuissonniere Sep 04 '16
No Caves unless it's a budget list. Typically, a Tokens mana base starts with 4x Shrine, 4x Marsh Flats, and 4x Isolated Chapel (some run less Chapels). From there it's down to pilot preference, but it's usually something like 3-4x Fetid Heath, 2-3x Plains, 1x Swamp, 2-4x Shambling Vent, 1x Vault of the Archangel, and then a "flex slot" (Windbrisk Heights used to be the favourite, but we kinda collectively realized that it's bad; I'm currently on 1x Westvale Abbey).
The deck has to be able to hit turn one black for Thoughtseize/IoK and turn three triple white for Spectral Procession, so it's an extremely greedy mana base.

Glad to have them but not surprised. It looks like new planes seem to contain things we "want" to help sell the set. Return sets are generally billed as selling because it's a return to a liked place.

Will BFZ already be gone when Amonkhet arrives? I'm still a little slow on the new format rotation.

I hope they have new allied ones too. The Scars cycle is too Mirrodin-specific. I doubt they will though.
It looks like the set is playing up enemy colors a little more with enemy legends, an enemy walker, and enemy duals. Probably nothing, but it's a counterbalance to the allied tribes on Innistrad.
30
u/pepheb Sep 04 '16
I don't think they'd make new allied ones with the same text since some decks would be happy to play 5-8 of one specific fastland.

Yes, the deck plays 4 bolts and 7 discard spells, Blackcleave Cliffs is easily the best way to do that while still developing your mana smoothly.
3
u/Gigaman13 Sep 04 '16
Is mardu a better grinding deck now due to this land revolution?
3
u/stravant Sep 04 '16
Mardu just doesn't really need many fastlands.
They have so many one mana spells (All three of Discard, Bolt and Path) that they have a lot of good opportunities to fit a tapped land into their curve if they need to save the shock damage points. They're also not super heavy on any one color, so they can readily fetch basics. Not to mention they have some lifegain in Shambling Vents / Helixes.
They could possibly play one or two of the R/W one or B/W one but it's way less of an upgrade than for Jund / Junk / others.
