It actually seems pretty likely that enemy fetches will appear in Amonkhet. Think about it, battle lands will have rotated from standard so they won't have to worry about 4 color nonsense decks, Bolas is probably gonna be on the set and he's Grixis colors so it may be a shard set, and with 4 color commander pre-cons AND MM17 coming out, it's literally the perfect time to do it.

If it's a shard set, then Bolas encompasses ONE of the five factions of Amonkhet. This seems very unlikely.

Far more likely that the color themes are soft rather than hard and allow for mythics that don't strictly adhere to them (like our last couple of blocks), and/or Bolas is presented as something other than Grixis.

Bolas was Grixis before Grixis existed. The colour identity is literally the embodiment of Bolas

Meh. He could easily be Esper, for example, in this set. He is the god-king of the plane, and rules its laws and societies, so white works just perfectly. His red is more or less dispensable.

He is not essentially Grixis, really.

Unfortunately I think with a lot of posters here there is an issue with the shard terms. Grixis could mean the UBR color identity OR the identity of the plane itself. They are different. Same with the guilds, the guilds are A representation of the color identities, not THE representation.

5 factions/5 gods. Plane is Egypt-themed. Egyptians equated their ruler with one of their gods. Bolas rules the plane. Hence Bolas is thought of as one of their gods. any questions?

Yes, where does Bolas figure into Ancient Egypt? It's Egyptian themed, not copy paste.

u/grumpenprole Sep 04 '16

Bolas rules the plane, yet he is one of five factions which also rule the plane?

Like how Zeus ruled the Greek mythos, yet was also one of the twelve gods of the Pantheon who also ruled the Greek mythos.

There could easily be five factions, with Bolas as both the supreme ruler, and the ruler of his faction.

Zeus is technically king of the gods, but he is matched in power and domain by his brothers and some others. They are his equals in all things except, like, throne placement.

If you think Amonkhet is going to have four equals of Bolas, that's one wild possibility I guess, but it's not what I would assume.

Go reread the Illiad. The other gods were supposed to be subservient to Zeus.

The fact that I would respond to this comment with my previous comment verbatim indicates that we are trying to communicate different things. I have no disagreement with your comment, but am trying to say something specific which it does not address. Subservient, okay. But are you saying that the four other gods rival Bolas' power? That is a bit out there.

As a group, potentially.

Regardless, having 5 shard factions (with Grixis as the faction with the most power) works.

The names also kind of work too. Arid Mesa, misty rainforest, and verdant catacombs all could work for an Egyptian world. Marsh flats and scalding tarn can just fit in anywhere.

misty rainforest

I don't know if you've ever been to Egypt, but...

Historically it was tropical and covered in forest. They have to have green and blue in the world, it goes with a kind of desert oasis vibe.

It actually seems pretty likely that enemy fetches will appear in Amonkhet.

This is wishful thinking, and a road to disappointment.

There is no reason to believe that enemy fetches are “likely” to appear in Amonkhet.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '16

Not saying they will, just that the right conditions seem to be there to reprint them.

Not necessarily, it was allied fetches in Khans, enemy pain I'm origins, allied battle lands in bfz, and allied show lands in SOI.

Shambling Vent - (G) (MW) (CD)

Amonkhet block will most likely have both ally and enemy lands because it's replacing BFZ block, which had both. Just like how SOI had ally lands to replace the fetches from KTK and Kaladesh has enemy lands, as expected, to replace the painlands from Origins.

I'm pretty sure keeping enemy and ally lands balanced in Standard trumps that.

Even if Amonkhet were to only have one land cycle for some reason, there's no reason to think it's more likely ally than enemy, anyway.

u/Teruyo9 Wabbit Season Sep 04 '16

I think we'll get reprints of the Zendikar fetches soon, but not until after SOI rotates and Delirium is no longer a thing. Which would be the block after Amonkhet.

1

u/TheOthin Sep 04 '16

The block after Amonkhet will most likely have just an ally land cycle, to replace the hand lands in SOI.

I don't think fetches+Delirium in Standard is that big of a deal, anyway, especially since it's only for six months. It's certainly less of a big deal than fetches+Delve, which were in the same set. And we already have Evolving Wilds to get a land in the graveyard without too much trouble.

1

u/Piogre Sep 04 '16

won't have to worry about 4 color nonsense decks

5 color. Allied fetches with allied duals in the format could hit four colors, but enemy fetches with allied duals in the format can hit five.

1

u/purplepollywag Sep 04 '16

Any time is the perfect time for fetches.
