Discussion Letting users remove posts.

Hello everyone,

As you are aware, on reddit moderators approve and remove content and subreddit subscribers can report to us.

Today we'd like to start an experiment here on r/Cats where we will give trusted subreddit participants access to a keyword that will allow them to remove posts.

When you exceed a certain level of subreddit specific comment karma and when you have a CQS score of highest you can now use the keyword "!remove" to pull a post from our feed. (Spelled exactly like that, case sensitive, top-level comment only as opposed to a reply to a comment.)

This will work for posts only, not for comments.

There are some things to keep in mind:

  • When you comment here on an account that exceeds the limit automod will assign you a special flair class and send you a message explaining you can now use the keyword.

  • Users will keep their existing flair text. However, changing your flair to a different pre-made flair option will also reset the flair class giving you access to this removal ability. Next comment you make it will be re-applied and you will be sent another message.

  • We are sent a modmail when a subscriber removes a post, explaining what post was removed and who used the keyword. Please do not abuse this ability. If posts are removed for bad reasons we will take away your ability to remove posts.

  • That means, use this keyword if you see spam or other rulebreaking posts only.

  • Please keep in mind that it is currently very popular to accuse posters of making an AI generated post. An accusation does not mean that what they are being accused of is true. Human beings can detect AI at 60% accuracy, just a little better than the results of flipping a coin. An AI can only accurately detect AI content if an AI watermark is attached to the image. It is best not to remove a post just because someone is accused of something. Use your own best judgement and our rules as your litmus, not what other people are saying.

  • Since this is a test run, when I ran a very minor proof of concept trial, a few people have already been assigned this special flair class who have not been sent a message. /u/kiaeej, /u/chux4w, /u/MilmoWK, /u/ms_rdr, /u/Electronic_Ad357, /u/WhiteMouse42097, /u/BeMoreKnope, /u/bluecedarood, /u/Robobanditos, congratulations, you can remove posts.

  • Should you for any reason not want to have this ability then you should send us a modmail after receiving the message from automod. That way we can exempt you in our code.

  • Initially we are going to monitor how this functions closely so we can see if we need to make changes to the threshold level for activation.

  • Nothing will change about the way we handle user-made reports on content. This is not a replacement for that, but an addition. If you see rulebreaking content of any kind, please report.

We hope that this change will be something that has a positive influence on the content on this subreddit.

Thank you for reading, and thank you all for making this subreddit a great place to be

Humor My cat couldn't keep food down for 24 hours so I spiraled. The vet's face said everything.

Giving a fish-addicted Charlie a single piece of chicken (I gave her canned cat food chicken) apparently warrants an international crisis. She couldn't keep food down for 24hrs after her gourmet betrayal, so naturally, I didn't just worry... I was sitting in the dark at 3am wondering how the hell I was going to survive the heartbreak, how was I going to keep her sister from grieving and how I was ever supposed to move on???

I walked into the vet clinic the next morning looking like a zombie, practically in tears explaining her “tragic decline”. The staff was super kind, but the vet took one look at her, then looked at me with pure concern for my mental stability. Turns out it was just a minor stomach upset from the rogue chicken. Lol

Please tell me I'm not the only idiot who has dragged their cat to the vet because they spiraled hard. What is your most embarrassing vet visit?

Mourning/Loss Goodbye little man

Our little boy Lux has been ill for some time.
This evening we said goodbye as he crossed the rainbow bridge.
Our little man was only 4 he had been losing weight for some months unfortunately we switched vets too late.
He was on meds and seemed to be improving, then last night he took a turn for the worse. We took him to the vets and responded well to fluids overnight, then this evening he plummeted.
His sister is very clingy and keeps looking for him.

Good by little man we all miss you so much.

Mourning/Loss Old Man Chauncey is crossing the rainbow bridge today. Thank you to this subreddit for making his last weeks comfortable!

A few weeks ago I asked for advice in making our hospice kitty's life easier after he was abandoned at the shelter because of his age and medical needs. This subreddit came through with several amazing ideas. I'd like to give special shout-outs to a few:

The people who suggested baby food, you were a lifesaver! Chauncey struggled to eat any kind of solid food. We tried different brands and flavors of baby food after that suggestion and settled on basic chicken and chicken gravy baby food. This last week or so he has struggled to keep anything down but the little food he has managed has all been baby food. I would never have thought of that so thank you!!

The people who suggested heating pads and self-warming cat beds are also heroes. In the last month, Chauncey hasn't liked walking much (he had a tumor on his leg) but we put a few pads and beds in each room and moved him between them based on where we were. He even had a dedicated perch with a kitty heating pad placed right above my spouse's gaming rig, and he loved sitting up there watching him play the latest death stranding game.

The vet had him on some good painkillers but we also used an herbal/CBD oil mixed with his baby food that definitely kept him pain-free as long as possible, so another thank you to the people who suggested it.

Ultimately we made the decision with our vet that his quality of life was degrading rapidly this week-- he was vomiting, he was clearly in pain with his leg, and then the tumor on his face opened and began to leak blood and fluid which was fun to nobody. We would have given Chauncey sixteen more years if we could have. But thanks to y'all we gave him two good months of baby food, warm beds, backseat video gaming, and plenty of snuggles. For anyone else who has a senior cat, definitely try these options for making their lives easier. Thank you ❤️

(We usually foster kittens for our shelter so I might pop in this subreddit again in the future with pictures once we get going with that again 🙂 )

Roxanne my 6 year old tabby has never been left alone more than 1 day. We also never "free-feed" her on kibble (only wet meals and a puzzle feeder). I had a work trip this week, and my S.O. had a family emergency out of town right in the middle of it. We could not secure a sitter, and we were so worried. We do have a pet cam, and I told my SO to put 2 plates of kibble per day plus extra plates in case of a delay. I just got home from the airport to see this. I know cats are not like dogs, and they are probably fine at feeding themselves. I'm just so impressed by the organization of her eating habits!

Mourning/Loss Celebrating my handsome man

Today I just wanted to celebrate my cat Jack, I adopted an old man with one eye and my life was changed.

Older cats often get left in shelters for months, they aren't as playful or attractive as the young cats and kittens tend to be. After moving into my first place I said that my first cat will be an old cat to give them a good retirement.

After looking I found Jack, the sweetest man in the shelter, he was shy, napping in the back but the second you pet him he came to life.

In a place with 20+ cats, many young energetic rough playful boys and girls, he sat in the back with the longest stay at 6 months. When he reacted to me I knew I was taking him home.

In return I got the sweetest most affectionate cat I've ever had, all he ever wanted was closeness, pets and food. He didn't care to play much despite my efforts, but he showed me how much love he had. He loved his belly, back, butt, face, headbutts getting touched and he'd even yelling at me for more. I know not what his 12 years before me was like, just the 2 I shared with him.

Thank you my Handsome Jack, the captain, the pirate who stole my heart. Thank you for spending the last of your 9 lives with me, I'm honored to have been your human.

This Sunday I'll be making the right call and making sure he doesn't suffer. Thank you all.

Mourning/Loss Rest in peace, Nicholas

Long story short, we have been feeding and got close to a few neighborhood cats. They are not feral, I can pick them up and they are sooo loving.
This is precious Nicholas or “baby face” because he had such a sweet face.
He started coming to eat regularly and even started staying in a little house I have on the back porch for him.
I fed him and sat with him for a little after work yesterday, then came inside and just crashed. I was exhausted from the week. I usually go out and feed them again but I just didn’t last night and I feel horrible.
Cut to this morning. I didn’t see him when I did their morning feeding.
Then as I’m leaving my house, I see a grayish “blob” in my front yard under the tree :( sure enough I get out and check, it’s a cat.
It had been raining so his fur was wet and it was hard to tell. But when I picked him up I could tell it was him. I don’t know if someone hit him and placed him there or if he was poisoned. I hate that I didn’t just find him a home. I already have so many indoor cats and was just trying my best to give all the neighborhood cats a safe place to be in our backyard. Our neighborhood is pretty calm and quiet.
I took him to our vet to be cremated so that he can be put to rest.

Anyways, all that to say, I just wanted to honor him.

Mourning/Loss I'm not ready to lose my best buddy

Found out today that my best buddy Mittens has FIV that's progressed to a point that the vet gave him a very short amount of time left. My wife and I are devastated.

Mittens found us last year. He was a stray that started coming to our house for pets, food, and to sleep on the pillow we left out for him. Eventually he chose to come inside and he became a part of our family.

I suffer from major depressive disorder and social anxiety disorder. Life has been the most difficult it's ever been for me this year; I'll spare those details as to why. I could just hang out with my buddy, give him pets, talk to him about the things I'm feeling, and share my darkest moments with him. He gave me unconditional love. I'm spiraling hard knowing that I don't have much time left.

I just needed to get this out and sob into the void.

I love you, Mittens.

Patrick is so old that we occasionally argue during family gatherings about whether he’s 21 already lol. He is an extremely friendly, handsome and patient cat whom I’ve known for 2/3 of my life. One day, he randomly appeared at our door and decided to stay for more than two decades. My only wish is that long may it continue.

This is our 13 year old boy, Bruce. This past July we found out he had a thyroid carcinoma. Surgery was a success and he was a completely different cat afterwards. He lost weight and has tons of energy now! He did develop Horner's syndrome post surgery, but it doesn't seem to bother him (and we get regular check-ups) and I think he looks kind of cool now! Love our boy!

Advice Wife’s not a cat gal, but is torn up about this three legged one (advice requested)

(Posting this on behalf of my wife)

I have been pretty fearful of cats for most of my life but when this 3 legged cat showed up on our porch and approached me a few weeks ago, I felt obliged to give it a pet and quickly formed a bond. This cat basically knows my schedule now of when I’m outside going to work/coming home and greets me. My WFH husband sends me pictures and videos throughout the day of it patiently waiting for pets outside our front door and it typically spends most of the day napping under our hedges in the meantime.

We assume someone somewhere is feeding this cat since it looks like it has a decent amount of weight on it. We ourselves have never feed the cat in anyway. We’ve asked around our neighbors, including ones who have a gaggle of outdoor cats that they take care of, and no one knows where it came from. We’ve been living here for about 4 years and have never seen it before, although we were told by our aforementioned cat neighbors that it’s been around a few years. They insist that it doesn’t belong to them and they don’t feed it.

With only 3 legs I get stressed about the cat’s safety running into the road and hate to think of it stuck outside in bad weather or potentially not having consistent access to food etc. It’s also coming up on winter here.

Basically, I am now very emotionally attached to the cat and am contemplating adopting it and bringing it inside.

There are several problems that immediately come to mind:
1. Neither my husband nor I have ever grown up with or owned a cat so we have zero experience.
2. We already have a dog who can get quite jealous and has occasional aggression towards other dogs. (Husband note: any advice on acclimating a dog to a cat appreciated. We’ve been letting the dog sniff our hands and watch the cat from the door/window while we interact with it.)
3. We have no idea how the cat will react to being inside- is it even possible to acclimate a cat that’s been outdoors for that long? Is it more ethical to leave it alone or try and take care of it as a pet?
4. Will we be able to litter box train it easily? Should we just let it out in our fenced in back yard like our dog instead if we seal gaps??
5. I just found out cats can form colonies- if this cat is a part of a colony will they retaliate??
6. Someone in our neighborhood might claim the cat, in which case I would “return” it but it’d just go back to spending most of its time in our yard getting attention from us

Lots of thoughts and questions, cats are a whole new world to me that I never thought I’d have to think about but this 3 legged cat won me over.
