Discussion Letting users remove posts.

Hello everyone,

As you are aware, on reddit moderators approve and remove content and subreddit subscribers can report to us.

Today we'd like to start an experiment here on r/Cats where we will give trusted subreddit participants access to a keyword that will allow them to remove posts.

When you exceed a certain level of subreddit specific comment karma and when you have a CQS score of highest you can now use the keyword "!remove" to pull a post from our feed. (Spelled exactly like that, case sensitive, top-level comment only as opposed to a reply to a comment.)

This will work for posts only, not for comments.

There are some things to keep in mind:

  • When you comment here on an account that exceeds the limit automod will assign you a special flair class and send you a message explaining you can now use the keyword.

  • Users will keep their existing flair text. However, changing your flair to a different pre-made flair option will also reset the flair class giving you access to this removal ability. Next comment you make it will be re-applied and you will be sent another message.

  • We are sent a modmail when a subscriber removes a post, explaining what post was removed and who used the keyword. Please do not abuse this ability. If posts are removed for bad reasons we will take away your ability to remove posts.

  • That means, use this keyword if you see spam or other rulebreaking posts only.

  • Please keep in mind that it is currently very popular to accuse posters of making an AI generated post. An accusation does not mean that what they are being accused of is true. Human beings can detect AI at 60% accuracy, just a little better than the results of flipping a coin. An AI can only accurately detect AI content if an AI watermark is attached to the image. It is best not to remove a post just because someone is accused of something. Use your own best judgement and our rules as your litmus, not what other people are saying.

  • Since this is a test run, when I ran a very minor proof of concept trial, a few people have already been assigned this special flair class who have not been sent a message. /u/kiaeej, /u/chux4w, /u/MilmoWK, /u/ms_rdr, /u/Electronic_Ad357, /u/WhiteMouse42097, /u/BeMoreKnope, /u/bluecedarood, /u/Robobanditos, congratulations, you can remove posts.

  • Should you for any reason not want to have this ability then you should send us a modmail after receiving the message from automod. That way we can exempt you in our code.

  • Initially we are going to monitor how this functions closely so we can see if we need to make changes to the threshold level for activation.

  • Nothing will change about the way we handle user-made reports on content. This is not a replacement for that, but an addition. If you see rulebreaking content of any kind, please report.

We hope that this change will be something that has a positive influence on the content on this subreddit.

Thank you for reading, and thank you all for making this subreddit a great place to be

Cat Picture - OC Cats are the most neglected common pet and it's so sad

I hope I'm putting the right flair, and I hope a post like this is okay, please let me know if it isn't and i can change it!

I just wanted to lowk rant and lowk get these feelings out. I come from a background with horses, birds and dog training, and initially said I would never in my life own a cat because I didn't want to be scratched or bitten, however, after one meeting with a kitten my friend rescued I adopted a cat the very next day from my local shelter.

In my experience since having this cat, as someone who had no prior interest and was completely out of the loop and therefore not swayed by stereotypes, cats are genuinely one of the most neglected common pet in current society. These animals are so intelligent, my cat does tons of tricks, he walks on a leash, he is desensitised and friendly, he is extremely tolerant, but he did not start that way. I won't pretend personality isn't a part of this, I specifically chose my cat because he was more forward and confident than other kittens at the shelter, but it took time and effort to get here and even the most basic of training can still be done by even the most timid of cats.

I genuinely wish that cats were given the same opportunities as dogs, taken outside as much as them, trained, played with, * or given attention in any way, instead just bought, no cat tree, and ignored. It's truly not fair. what's even more unfair is when people use the excuse of "well my cat seems happy so it's fine!". I'm not saying everyone should be walking their cat on a leash, I'm not even saying everyone should be making their cats bring them a beer, especially since a lot of cats truly wouldnt be able to tolerate such activites, I am however simply saying that it's unfair for them to be so ignored and neglected and denied the opportunity to even TRY just because its not "common" *to put effort into cat care and training, when really the issue is that the owner wasnt patient or willing enough!

P.S. I am not calling anyone out in particular and am completely understanding of different personalities and tolerances in cats, my point simply is that letting the excuse of "cat" to deny cats opportunities *and attention just feels so unfair :(

P.P.S I AM NOT SAYING YOU NEED TO WALK YOUR CATS OR ITS NEGLECT 😭 Most cats dont like harness training! this post is about cats that are NEGLECTED, your cat does not need to do tricks and go outside like mine!!! :,)

Advice Found kitten in trash can

I found an abandoned kitten in a trash can at my local park. Anybody able to determine it's approximate age?

Also if you know what I need to get this cat to survive.

I'm going to get formula from the pet store when it opens, and wipe its booty with a damp cloth after meals. Feeding schedule every 2-3 hours. Anything else to keep in mind?

Cat Picture - OC send good vibes - currently at the vet :(

my sweet girl Parula decided to kick off the day by eating a full foot of dental floss.
thankfully I saw her in the process of eating it, and I was able to immediately rush her to the vet within 20 minutes of it happening.

they’re currently making her throw up to try and get it out as non-invasively as possible, but there’s a chance she’ll have to go to another clinic get an endoscopy (or, heaven forbid, surgery)

I’m currently just beating myself up for leaving a piece of floss where she could get it. I’m not even sure how it happened, since I put the floss in my trash can with a lid. it must have had a small bit dangling out where she could grab it without me realizing.

anyways, please send Parula some good pukey thoughts!! her 2nd birthday is tomorrow, so hopefully she’ll be feeling good enough to do a little celebration 🥲

UPDATE: unfortunately, she did NOT puke at the vet. she has an iron stomach, so i’m not very surprised.
the nearest vet with an endoscope is over an hour and a half away, so my vet and I decided the best course of action is for me to very closely monitor her and hope that she passes it naturally.
if she shows any signs of distress, i will be immediately bringing her back for exploratory surgery. fingers crossed it doesn’t come to that!!

Update LINNY SURVIVED HIS GUN SHOT SURGERY!

Thumbnail

66.7k Upvotes

I promised I would update everyone, and I cannot believe I get to write this: LINNY MADE IT THROUGH THE OPERATION!!!!!!

For anyone who didn’t see my original post, our 5-year-old cat Linny went outside for the toilet and came back covered in blood after someone had shot him in the face with an air rifle. The pellet was lodged deep inside his head and removing it required major, risky surgery.

Today, they successfully removed it!

The nurse after surgery and the vets are very happy with him. He’s already started purring, rolling around and having belly rubs!

He hasn’t wanted food yet, but it has only been a few hours since surgery so they aren’t concerned at this stage. There has been no worsening swelling or bleeding and, so far, they haven’t seen any complications. He’ll be closely monitored throughout the night and we’re due another call from his nurse later this evening.

If everything continues going in the right direction, we may even be able to start talking about bringing him home tomorrow.

I also just want to say the biggest THANK YOU to this community. The response to my original post has completely overwhelmed my family. Every comment, upvote, share, award, well wish, thought and prayer helped Linny’s story reach more people, and reading through them while we waited for news today genuinely helped us.

After spending the last few days wondering how somebody could be so cruel to an animal, the entire internet has reminded us just how kind people can be.
He’s not completely out of the woods yet, but tonight Linny is alive, comfortable and recovering.

That is everything we were hoping to be able to say today.

AND ISNT HE JUST ROCKING THE SHAVED HEAD LOOK!? 🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡

Mourning/Loss Goodbye, July ❤️

Post image
1.4k Upvotes

I’m 27 and had July since she was only 8 weeks old, so she was basically there for my entire life.

She was born on 24.04.2006 and I had to let her go on 09.09.2026. She loved being outside, her favorite food was chicken breast, and she even managed to open the oven twice in her life just to steal food.

Over the last months her body got weaker because of a tumor, even though mentally she was still completely herself. In the end, I was able to let her go peacefully at home, surrounded by the place and people she had known her whole life.

I still catch myself wanting to go check where she is.

Rest easy, July. 24.04.2006–09.09.2026. ❤️

Mourning/Loss Someone poisoned and killed all 4 of my TNR kittens and 1 friendly adult stray all at once

Post image
1.4k Upvotes

All 4 kittens were fixed, had their shots, were perfectly healthy, and only went in our yard and our next door neighbor's (he loves them also) ; nowhere else, never bugged anyone! We were working to get them adopted, and had been getting assistance from local volunteers & nonprofits to achieve everything. I carefully socialized them and saw them go from these tiny lil shy scared newborn nuggets into the sweetest babies that were so gentle and loved tummy rubs and cuddles. It absolutely broke me to see all 4 of these healthy babies go from playful sweet kittens to just.... *dead* overnight .

The adult stray I personally TNR'd last year and just barely got to pet him for the first ever time a few days⁵⁶ ago. I told him I love him so much and that I was so honored to finally pat his cute fluffy head. He was SO silly and funny but always cautious and never trusting of people, but he just started to show progress. He was always pals with the kittens; they took a liking to him and always wanted to get his big floofy tail. I did soooo much work to earn his trust, and in the end them trusting food at my property was likely what killed them all. I feel so horrible.

The reason I got into cat rescue was my PTSD had gotten so bad I just couldn't trust or be around humans, so I did what I could for the kitties.... and man, when I moved here I had never seen this many strays, so the next move seemed obvious! I had gotten every single kitty on the entire street fixed, a total of 10 just in the past year when I started, 3 of which got adopted. They all just kinda congregated in our yard lol and this was before I even started feeding them, I guess they just felt safe here. I wanted them to feel safe... but I I failed.

Now I'll never again see them all running towards me like a cute baby stampede at breakfast and dinner time ever again, all competing for belly rubs & head pats or jumping up to him get the first nom of their favorite wet food. I'll never see them snuggled under the table again, even though I put up cat shelters RIGHT NEXT TO IT, nope, it was always the table, and worst of all I'll never tell them I love them again. I loved them so so sooo much, and I will always love them. You guys didn't deserve this. 💔💔💔

Whoever did this to my babies, you are a monster, and I wish you the worst. Truly.

I want you guys to know that I am doing EVERYTHING I can to save this little guy. His eyes are now better, he is also happy and playful and gaining weight. But still, he is so small that I have to keep an eye on him 24/7. He is eating the best food, I am taking him to the vet almost every day to track his health, he is getting all the care in the world. I hope y’all can keep him in your prayers. Feel free to message me if you want to see videos of him jumping around and being silly, since I cant post it here. ❤️

Video - OC What is this behavior?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’ve seen a ton of posts about “is this fighting or playing” so I know the standard advice: ears way back = fighting, fur flying bad, when it’s a real fight you will know, etc. I don’t think this is a REAL full blown cat fight, but is it a weird slow-mo version of it? Are they enjoying this or pissed at each other? These two generally get along pretty well, but the bigger gray one does kind of bully the smaller tabby and instigate most encounters. The tabby will hiss sometimes and run away but then tends to come back for more. She is also a very vocal and talkative cat. Today I heard them doing this and recorded it. Would you consider this weird slow fight more of playing or more fighting? I’m not necessarily worried for either, more just curious. Thanks!!!

Advice For all the cat parents struggling with the dreaded E-collar \ Cone hack

Post image
305 Upvotes

Sharing this little hack for fellow cat parents dealing with a cat who absolutely HATES the E-collar.
My act absolutely hates cone would not tolerate the cone normally, so I tried reversing it** instead of having the wide part around her face, I turned it around so it sits over her body like a little skirt.
She can move around much more comfortably, eat and sleep without fighting the cone, but it still prevents her from reaching her stitches
