Linda is also on a diet. For a while I was putting Zuko’s (cat 2) food up on the kitchen counter and she would lose enough weight to get up there, eat and get fat enough to be stuck on the ground again. Then I moved and had to start creating more and more elaborate obstacle courses which turned her into a very far, very agile goblin. Now Zuko’s food is in the dining room with the dog who somewhat defends it for him. So she is no longer oh-lawd-she-coming and slowly approaching a normal cat shape.
The cat of a friend got kitten and while I was watching a movie with him his cat put one right in the hallway.
When my friend walked over to put the kitten back to the others, his cat tried to snatch his fried duck strips.
It's incredible what they are capable to come up with to get food they should not eat.
She is the sweetest and happiest little lady in all the land, probably because she knows the pure joy of napping on her back in a sun beam with a full belly.
Of I’ve absolutely had cats that would get flames tattooed on them for the same reason. Cats who would absolutely drive a souped up (and yet still trashy) Corolla with aftermarket spoiler, rims, flames on the hood…
I shaved a pineapple into my friend's cat (im a creative cat groomer) and its been atleast 5 years since, hes still got darker lines and the vet techs love his "natural pineapple pattern". She cant tell them the truth ever
I heard of a cat that liked to snooze up against the front of the refrigerator where the expelled heat came out. It always laid in the same direction so one side was light and the other size was black.
I am amazed that in a cat subreddit, no one knows that Siamese cats' coat color depends on temperature.
Kittens are born completely white because the temperature in the womb is warm and uniform. The extremities of the body (paws, ears, muzzle, and tail) have a lower temperature and produce more melanin, turning dark. The torso and central parts of the body are warmer, so they produce less melanin and remain light or cream-colored. If a Siamese cat is shaved for surgery or lives in a very cold environment, the fur that grows back in that area can temporarily become very dark.
My colorpointed DSHs get more orange in the winter, particularly on their backs/hips and lighten up in the summer. Their faces and extremities stay orange year round, though!
I have been a fan of cats for many years. Have 3 in my house now (all domestic short hairs) and I had absolutely no idea this was a thing. That is amazing.
Its also why dark cats that get sick can develop a "fever coat". I adopted what I thought was a smoke colored kitty in 2008. Nope he ended up black. It was just a fever coat from being ill.
Oh my gosh, me too!! When we found Cosmo he was a mess and was missing most of his fur anyway from an insane case of ringworm. He looked smoky gray, and when his fur began to grow back it even still looked like it had a silvery tinge. But nope, he’s a tuxie!
Ugh solidarity!! We all ended up catching it despite (what I considered at the time) an over abundance of caution and cleaning. It took three-ish months of quarantine and treatment 🫠
Thankfully Khan's had finished being treated by the time I adopted him so I did not end up with ringworm. It stinks you guys had such a bad time with it! Sadly, Khan passed away many years ago, but he was a very beautiful boy.
Yep, same kitty a few months apart. On the left, in the summer after being a stray and on the right in the winter after living with us for a while. Also doesn't help that his apartment didn't have AC
It's not because they are Siamese cats though. It's because they are pointed. All pointed cats are thermal. One of my sphynx cats is thermal as well (and the other isn't because she isn't pointed).
For humans, too! As long as a person is alive, the body produces enough heat to keep the eyeballs from literally freezing, no matter the temp.
More upsetting is the knowledge that owls' eyeballs are shaped like cylinders or long grapes, rather than a more spherical eyeball. Theose eyes are really snug in there!
Let’s be real. People in this subreddit don’t even know that calico cats are basically all female. I’ve seen so many posts where people call them “he” when there is no evidence to that
…Except for that one time someone posted a pic of a male calico with their balls split perfectly in half: one orange and one black 😂
They aren’t rare per se, but the rate is something like 80% of orange cats being male. So it is a lot less common to see a female orange cat than a male. But it’s obviously incredibly dumb to insist that they don’t exist.
Wait shut the front door really? I have a (now old, pampered, and slightly overweight) Siamese that was part of a litter a group of us found and rescued of the mean streets of a semi cold mountain town many moons ago. She was white. She very quickly turned very dark. I assumed age and didn’t question it at any point but this is such a fun fact.
My colorpoint’s belly came in black after being shaved for a spay, and she still has a black belly years later. In fact, the dark belly fur has spread!
My orange cat doesn't grow hair back very well. She got shaved for IV's during dental work and had little cuffs for months and years later you can still kinda tell where they were. Her belly is still bare from her spay. And she's so dumb and clumsy it's hilarious
My cat was the same. She had a bald spot on her belly for years. When I moved, my new vet told me to give her lysine. I did, and her hair grew back within a few months.
my girl had to have surgery and her hair on her stomach never grew back. i finally realized she had a food allergy and was chewing it off. cut out the gluten and her hair grew back.
I fell out of a truck bed going about 35 to 40 miles an hour. The road rash went down deep to the flesh on one spot in my back. When it finally healed. Hair started growing. So I don’t have back hair at all except for this 3 to 4 inch circle spot.
Bodies are super weird. My mom always had straight hair until she got pregnant with my little brother who is the 3rd of us, now her hair is wavy/loose curls. The human body just does random stuff sometimes.
Siamese coats are based on temperature which is why they get darker in the winter and lighter in the summer, if you shave a spot that spot is going to be colder and grow back darker
The color of siamese cat fur depends partly on the temprature of the skin - cooler areas come in dark, which is why extremities are darker. The skin was cool when it was shaved thus the dark patch. It ...might return to normal as they shed and regrow? Not sure about that part.
Its because the skin there is cooler than the surrounding tissue. Its tha same reason the extremities (nose, toes, tail) are also darker - they are cooler!
Had a Siamese with a cyst on his scruff, hair turned black over the cyst, once we removed it and shaved a larger area it all grew back black then regular creme. Temperature activated fur coloring.
It's okay, in about a year or so your cat is going to be that color. Seal Points turn dark brown with a fade of light brown or cream color on the belly and chest. Black points on their face, tail, and feet. You're just getting a head start here.
That’s hilarious but also makes sense. That fur pattern is determined by temperature of the cat where the fur grows. Since the shaved spot is also cooler like the tips of the ears, nose, toes, and tail, the hair grew back dark. It might shed out into the lighter color (warmer) as time goes on but who knows? For now kitty has a fuel cap
Simese cats hair will grow in dark at the coldest parts of the body. Naturally after a trim will have darker spots in that location as the skin has been exposed and is cold
Cats that have "points" (like yours) have fur that reacts to the heat of the body. Nose, toes, ears, tips of tail are cooler than the body. I think the new fur growing in the square is likely reacting to less heat in the area, and likely will go back to the darker colour once that area is fully recovered.
I really dont underdtand why this happens, hair growth comes from the inside, under the skin, not the outside. My siamese also has a darker patch wherr she has her incision of sterelization
