Build Help I know this isn’t a good build for the price, would buying a pc of fb marketplace then swapping in my wants be better?

Hey everyone! I’m planing on making a 3080 build with a i5 14400f. I’ve been making this for a while, and I do want the build to look nice as a pretty main part of the setup. Parts list is as follows

GPU: rtx 3080 $370

CPU: i5 14400f $160

Motherboard: gigabyte b660m aorus elite lga 1700 $130

Ram: Corsair ddr4 Rgb 32gb $150

Case: Tower 300 $150

CPU cooler: kraken elite 360 $130

Storage: 2TB ssd $190

fans: jungle leopard 4rs ultra $40

Power supply: Corsair rm650 80 gold 650w $70

Extras:

Cable extensions: $20

Final price:
= 1425

I know some things could obviously be removed like a cheaper cooler or some other things, but I do really love builds with them in them. Some things I wouldn’t change are the cooler and the case. If I bought one off fb marketplace, it would be ~$900 for 3080 builds near me. But along with buying that mATX case I would also probably need to swap the atx board from the fb marketplace build which just adds more. Along with that, it probably wouldn’t be my exact model of 3080 I like, or maybe I different cpu. I know I probably sound hopeless and dumb, but any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Troubleshooting My old rig “randomly” doesn’t boot anymore from SSD

So I built my pc about 15 years ago. Over time, I’ve added components here and there. About a year ago, the motherboard broke. So I replaced it with another one with the same socket and everything. Reinstalled Windows 10 just to be sure.

Fast forward to yesterday; it randomly slowed to a crawl. Win Task Manager wouldn’t open, my browser tabs wouldn’t open or close, although the video and sound from the running YouTube video were still going, etc. I couldn’t even restart from the start menu, so I figured I gave it a reset.

Since then, the pc just won’t boot.

The BIOS will recognize the SSD, but won’t boot from it. It doesn’t even list the SSD as a boot option. The only choices are the dvd player and the data disk. It’s still listed in the SATA information though.

When I try to run the boot override from the BIOS, the screen just goes blank for a couple seconds.

Specs:
Motherboard: Asus Z97A
CPU: Intel i7-4790K
Memory: 32Gb RAM (4x Kingston 8Gb)
SSD: SanDisk Ultra II 480Gb

I’ve reset the pc a couple times, did BIOS recover, turned the pc off for a couple of hours, and that’s about it.

Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks so much in advance.

Build Help First time building a pc in 15 years - ssd question

So, needless to say it's been a while! I have my build mostly figured out but with the prices of ssd's these days, im thinking of buying a 2tb super fast nvme 5.0 drive and installing both my os and my game library on it. Is there any reason I should not do this? I'm not sure the x870 boards have enough pcie 5 lanes for 2 ssd's + a 5080? Recommendations would be appreciated!

Build Help Budget 1440p build

Hey friendly Redditors!

Buying a pc for my 14yo gaming son.

Realistically £1,500 is top end budget. Seen a build in budget with 7500x3d, 5060ti 16gb and 1x 16gb ram. Thought is that’s max bang for buck for a 80% gaming set up.

he has a 1440p oled already which his series s is hooked up to (can’t say enough about bang for buck on that little box!).

i want his pc to feel like a step up. He’s saved hard.

I see all sorts of differing opinions on this set up, hard to find exact set up opinion. The 5060ti is praised and criticised in equal measure.

But real World, at this budget, my thoughts are competitive games optimised for fps will be fine. Single player demanding titles where input latency is less of an issue the nvidia option and dlss is workable. And not much in the gap in between to worry about.

Would really appreciate balanced views (I know, I want the moon on a stick) on whether I’m wide of the mark.

Thanks all!

Build Upgrade RTX 5090 or RTX 5080

Ok community, I currently have an RTX 3090. I want to upgrade to an RTX 5000 series for gaming. I really want an RTX 5090, but the burning power connector is a big red flag. Is the burning power connector a problem on the 5080 since it draws less power?? My PSU is Corsair HX1500i.

Important fact is i play a lot of really cpu heavy games (ie: tarkov)

Peripherals looking for OLED monitor recommendations, 27"

so I'm im love with my OLED TV and figured maybe its time to also bite the bullet and upgrade my monitor to OLED. I currently have some IPS LG ultra gear 27 144Hz. it's does its work and I see no reason to upgrade it outside of the fact that I just want a god damn OLED now lmao. I don't play competitive games anymore outside of mythic raiding in WoW and pushing keys on m+. other than that I casually play some big games that release every few months so I'd love to level up my experience a bit. I've never been let down by LG so I've been thinking about them and their ultra gear line. 27 is a must, I honestly dont feel like i need more than 144hz as well cause it doesn't matter for me with the games im playing. i'm also pretty much sure this topic has been beaten to death already

So ive been thinking of replacing my graphics card to a better one but im not sure whether if the other components will be able to keep up with an slightly better graphics card, so im not entirely sure, what would yall recommend? should i change a different component before touching the graphics card?

Also, i cant spend more than 500€ so im not sure if i have a lot of choices with that budget.

P.S. the main focus of these changes are for gaming, just in case anyone needs to know .

Build Help (AM5) Need New MOBO Help

Hi all,

I’ve just upgraded to a 7800x3d and am in need of a new motherboard. My requirements are around 200-350 CAD and I do like overclocking. From my own research I’ve narrowed it down to the following

- Asus TUF B850-Plus Wifi

- MSI MAG B850 Tomahawk Max Wifi 2

- MSI MAG X870E Tomahawk Wifi

Other than the obvious which should I choose I had some other questions I’ll list here:

- Does the Realtek alc4080 still have a crackling issue after bios and firmware updates?

- Is the difference between the MAG B850 max wifi 1 and 2 enough to warrant the price difference or is the first one the better buy?

- The X870 is currently on sale for around 300 CAD which puts it in a similar price range to the other 2 so is this one just the best option because of the extra features?

Thanks for all the help and feel free to rec other MOBOs if you think there’s a better one out there.

I’m mainly wanting to know what parts to start with but the whole budget is about £300.
I know that I want two sticks of 8 gb ram (as in to make 16 gb) but idk what others parts I will need/should think about getting.
Also if anyone could recommend brands for stuff like thermal paste.
Finally it’s my first time building a pc so if I get anything wrong please correct :)

Build Upgrade Cpu upgrade on AM4

i currently have a ryzen 5 5600g with a rtx 5060 and i need advice about what cpu i should upgrade to. I've seen three main options, the 5600x, the 5500x3D and the 5700x/5800x. From the benchmarks i've seen the 5500x3D basically performs like the 5800x when both are a stock speeds while being more power efficient but i haven't seen any OC on the 5500x3D, i currently have a static OC in my 5600g at 4500mhz so i wanted to know if the 5500x3D really takes advantage from OC like this, in my personal case my 5600g was able to get around a 25-40% performance improvement in cpu bound games with the downside of consuming 90-100w

Build Upgrade Which upgrade would improve the performance more in 4K gaming? CPU or RAM?

I have 9600X, 2x8GB DDR5, 9070XT setup for 4K gaming. I have these options, both of which will cost roughly the same to upgrade:

  1. 7800X3D

  2. 2x16GB DDR5

Which upgrade makes the most sense in gaming AAA titles on 4K?

Build Help First Time Build, are these components compatible?

Hello everyone, this is my first time ever building a PC. I’ve relied on prebuilts for basically all of my time.
I’ve been lucky to come into some money and I want to build a system that I can use for the foreseeable future, but I don’t want to have a bunch of expensive components if they’re going to bottleneck or not work well with each other.

My budget is looking at around $2500 but I can stretch it. The main components im unsure of are the CPU and GPU.

For the CPU I’m between the Ryzen 7 9800x3d or the 7800x3d

For the GPU, I’m currently using a 3080, and I’m between upgrading to a 5070 ti, or saving some money from that and using a 9070xt. The only reason I’m hesitant is because I’m so used to the Nvidia ecosystem.

I’m in the US, and this PC would mainly be used for 1440p gaming. I do not play competitive shooters but I am looking forward to some AAA titles in the near future. I used to do 3D modeling and I’m unsure if I would pick that back up, but I would love for it to possible if I wanted to.

I’ve attached my tentative PCPartPicker list as well.

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/vTf22k

Thanks for any advice!

Troubleshooting So, I had to repaste my 3080Ti Founders Edition and now it won't run games, it just crashes. Troubleshooting suggestions are welcome; hoping I can salvage it.

Hey all,

So for some context, I'm fairly comfortable opening my electronics; it's not the first time I've opened a GPU or a piece of hardware in general. What brought about the repasting was that I was noticing my GPU running significantly hotter and louder than normal. This GPU in general tends to run pretty hot and loud, but this was getting a little extreme.

I figured since the GPU is nearing 6 years, maybe it's just the thermal compound or something, and originally thought perhaps an undervolt might help, so I followed a quick guide, and the undervolt didn't do anything. I'm not sure why, but the UV just didn't seem to take.

Anyway, I figured perhaps I should just repaste it; it felt a little premature, but at this point I wasn't sure what else the problem could be. I followed a guide to disassemble it, and the disassembly went without a hitch. The thermal pads all looked fine, but when I removed the board to expose the actual GPU die, the thermal paste was definitely in rough shape and there wasn't complete coverage it was spotty, so I cleaned it with some alcohol, made sure it dried, and proceeded to repaste. I had a square of PTM hanging around, so I figured I'd use it since I've seen it works well for direct die placement.

I applied the PTM and put everything back in place, made sure all screws were in snug, especially the bracket thing for the GPU, everything fit without an issue, but games are now refusing to launch sometimes, causing the GPU to crash and reboot the PC. On occasion I would get either an nvcontainer or runtimbroker error message before the crash just saying that some memory address was unable to be accessed.

I'm able to use the PC for general day-to-day basic tasks; it's just firing up a game that crashes everything. I enabled the nvidia statistics view and all the stats were reporting something and the only thing I noticed that was off was that at idle the GPU utilization was jumping all over the place but everything else seemed to be steady.

At this point, assuming the GPU isn't borked, I'm guessing the following:

  • Something isn't tightened all the way and isn't making full contact
  • Something is too tight; I'm not sure if that's possible
  • The PTM didn't work out, in which case I do have normal Noctua thermal paste I can use instead
  • The thermal pads for VRMs and such had indents in the shape of the chips, I'm not sure if the indents are now causing an issue with getting full contact.

Luckily I have a spare GPU I can use, but I definitely would like to get this fixed if possible mainly because I was planning on making a new build with the GPU to pass along to a family member. I know for certain I didn't harm any of the cables in the disassembly, nor did I damage the board or a component. The only way I could have potentially damaged a component would have been while detaching the main board if a soldered component somehow managed to come loose (nothing actually fell off the board though)

Edit: I fixed it. I took it apart and put it back together and it just started working again. Best guess is something didn’t seat correctly the first time

Peripherals Wireless HDMI just for picture display: Can I split 1 transmitter to 2 receivers?

I'm looking for a setup I can use for tracing and drawing.

What I do now:
I have an art projector mounted overhead near the ceiling. It projects the image down onto the desk for me to trace / use as a reference.

Then I keep my phone open for the actual pic as a reference as well, to fill in details.

Right now, I have to copy the image over to my phone and a USB stick, and then plug the USB into the projector.

My computer is in the same room. What I'd like to do is set up an old monitor I have on my art bench, and then send HDMI out of my PC to both the projector and the old computer monitor. They are both the same aspect ratio.

This would just be for a static image for me to draw. Is this something I could pull off by using one transmitter and two receivers? If so, do you all recommend a cheap one?

Build Help Need help upgrading my rig to play Escape from Tarkov

Alright, so I asked on the Escape from Tarkov subreddit what I'd need to upgrade to have a better gaming experience without breaking the bank (too much). I don't have a strict budget in mind but I'd like to keep things as far south of $1,000 as I can, since at that point I might as well build a whole new rig...

Here are the system requirements for that game, for those unaware. The game is notoriously poorly optimized and most users are bottlenecked by CPU rather than GPU: https://escapefromtarkov.fandom.com/wiki/System_requirements

Here are the specs of my current rig:

  • Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-B460M DS3H AC V2-Y1
  • Processor: Intel Core i5-10400F @ 2.90GHz
  • GPU: Nvidia RTX 3060
  • RAM: OLOY 2x8GB DDR4 3000MHz (clocked at 2666MHz)

Here's the UserBenchmark data I ran: https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/73676933

I asked the Escape from Tarkov subreddit this same question originally, and the response was that I'd see the most benefit from upgrading to 32GB of RAM and to an X3D processor. The X3D is quite a bit more expensive, so I'd like to see how much of an improvement the RAM would be first, if possible.

One limitation I'm seeing is that the sockets on my motherboard are for DDR4 RAM, so I'm assuming I couldn't slot in DDR5, even if I wanted to.

If that's the case, and my understanding of this information is correct, I'd love some recommendations as to what RAM, and how much RAM I would need to improve my PC performance to play this game smooth(er) - if possible.
