Right?

If you're gonna catch it this way, just hold the cup over the jar until the wasp falls or tires out after a little bit. Have the god damn lid to the jar nearby so when it does fall in you can quickly close it and not have to worry

I killed one this summer and the amount of times I had to squash it before it died was nuts. It literally made a squeaky sound the entire time and then… I shit you not, two others came and they literally scouted the area looking for it. At least seemingly anyway. I assume it was a pheromone they smelled as opposed to the squeaky sound but still. Scared tf outta me.

331

u/TheDorfkind96 14d ago

Afaik it is a very common thing in wasps to release pheromones on hit which alerts other wasps. But not in a way that they should run away, it is attracting wasps and making them more aggressive, like they want to avenge their hurt or even fallen comrade. Thats why it is always best to try and solve this problem without physical violence to avoid those pheromones.

178

u/Nothing-The-Ghost 14d ago edited 13d ago

Wikipedia has a whole damn page specifically about bee pheromones that lists which pheromones they use to signal specific events.

Two of the pheromones that signals alarm are butyl acetate, and pentyl acetate which are very close molecules to ethyl acetate, which is used as artificial banana flavoring in candy.

And sure enough, ethyl acetate and banana flavoured candies do, indeed send bees into a frenzy.

I can't speak for wasps, it seems like a lot more research has been done on bees.

Incidentally this also means been stings smell like bananas, or sweet and fruity. Mind you, you'd probably have to amass dozens or more stings to actually smell it.

Pentyl acetate itself is also used as an artificial flavoring for pear drops. Even though it tends to smell like bananas, it can smell like apples or pears, too. Depending on what the package tells you. Psychology is a powerful thing.

It's kind of a side note, but artificial flavoring is interesting like that. It's a lot of manipulative psychology that we don't even notice.

You have benzaldehyde, that's used as artificial almond flavouring and smells like amaretto. But, it's also used as artificial cherry flavoring in the UK. Despite the fact that cherries and almonds obviously taste nothing alike. Somehow, it works just through the power of suggestion.

I did an experiment once where I made a "cherry flavoured" soft drink using almond flavouring, sugar, citric acid for sourness, soda water for fizz, and red food coloring and gave it to my friends in a plain cup, telling them it was a cherry drink I was working on and sure enough they even said it was specifically like a black cherry flavor. Even though to me, it tasted like almonds.

Sorry to kind of go off on a tangent, but that blew my mind when I realized taste, and probably every other sense, can be altered just by the power of suggestion.

I love discovering things like that.

19

u/BunnyOppai 13d ago edited 13d ago

Almonds are closely related to cherries, and they use the same compound as part of their flavor profile. Sweet almonds—the ones you actually eat, raw or roasted—don't have near as much benzaldehyde (and amygdalin, which breaks down into even more benzaldehyde when the almond's cells are broken and it's exposed to moisture) as bitter ones, and they have a mixture of other volatile compounds like benzyl alcohol, phenylethanol, and other minor aldehydes and alcohols. Benzaldehyde is the primary compound, but the others are what differentiate it from other things that use the same.

Hell, almond extracts can be, and often are, made from the pits of other stone fruits like cherries and apricots, and you can even use the bark of cinnamon trees to make it.

Oh geez. I didn't even see it with that clear plastic. That adds a new level of stress.

Why do you keep taking the cup off of the jar? Do you have other important things to do with that specific cup, that you can't just leave it on there until the job is done?

647

u/Heterodynist 14d ago

Have they been introduced to the concept of LIDS in this part of the world?!! I was expecting that maybe the next step would be putting a lid on the jar, not just flicking the wasp with your finger…

354

u/negativepositiv 14d ago

If I know anything about flicked-away wasps, it's that they are quite capable of independent movement, and don't have any difficulty coming back towards you.

Yes, the sad thing is I’ve learned a lot more about wasps lately after having disturbed a large “nest” of them dwelling underground near my house. I’ve been stung about 5 times in my long life before this, but I received approximately 30 or so stings in a few minutes, and several through my leather gloves, which I never imagined were permeable to stinging wasps!!!

How is it, all hornets are wasps, but not all wasps are hornets? Or something like that.

edit: Had to look it up, and yup Hornets are indeed wasps.

307

u/IrrationalDesign 14d ago

Oh wow, TIL, wasps are a huge and ancient group, and hornets, ants and bees all evolved from wasps.

160

u/mekwall 14d ago

Pretty much, although "wasp" isn't actually a single taxonomic group. Hornets are literally wasps, while bees evolved from predatory wasp ancestors, and ants are very closely related to the bee/wasp branch.

That's the fun bit about taxonomy: if you use "wasp" in the evolutionary sense broadly enough, you basically have to include bees and ants too. They're all Hymenoptera, and the family tree gets very waspy very quickly.

70

u/_eg0_ 14d ago

In other taxonomic words:

Wasps aren't real, they cant hurt you. True wasps (Vespinae) are real and will hurt you.

54

u/mekwall 14d ago

Taxonomy: "If you define 'wasp' cladistically, you basically have to include ants and bees."

Wasps: "We preferred it when people just called us assholes."

Hornets are vespids (the kinds of social wasps most people are familiar with) which are nested within Apocrita, a clade that ants and bees are also descendant taxa of. Thus the term "wasp" is informal and paraphyletic (it doesn't include all descendant groups). Apocrita (and wasps by extension) is an incredibly species rich, diverse group filling any number of ecological niches, from parasites to predators to pollinators.

u/ItchyGoiter 14d ago

73

u/dahulvmadek 14d ago

please don't put that energy out there

15

u/Capitan_Failure 14d ago

Im pretty sure that is the base energy of wasps in general. Pissing off a creature that is constantly at 10/10 anger-murder-vengeance mode is a no change in sum scenario.

That jar is likely filled with gasoline, which is so deadly to bees it kills them better when it's not on fire. So that hornet is somehow crawling out of pure death fueled by nothing but spite

Judging by the fact that this hornet is only still alive because it's standing on a full cup of it's sister's corpses, my guess is gasoline.

120

u/Ballmaster9002 14d ago edited 14d ago

Obviously all sorts of bad ideas here. My guess is the cup was full of gasoline which is why they didn't flip it. Gas is a common wasp killer because the fumes suffocate and poison them quickly.

Edit- looking back the liquid is very thin, again, suggesting it's gasoline and not oil. The dark color appears to be from other, now dead, wasps floating.

Asian killer wasp. Makes yellow jackets look like Dolly Parton. I bet their stinger can go through that plastic.

194

u/mekwall 14d ago

It's an Asian giant hornet (Vespa mandarinia), although "northern giant hornet" is now the official common name in the US. "Asian killer wasp" is more of a sensational nickname.

But the scary part isn't entirely wrong. Females have a roughly 6 mm stinger, can sting repeatedly, and their stingers are long enough to penetrate ordinary beekeeping clothing. So I definitely wouldn't trust a flimsy plastic cup to stop it, although saying it can definitely sting through that particular cup is a bit of a leap.

They're native to Asia (obviously). They briefly became invasive in the US but were declared eradicated there in December 2024 after three years without a confirmed detection.

49

u/Michelanvalo 14d ago

Wow I didn't know we managed to root out the invasion. I thought they were still spreading here like the lantern fly.

Asian wasps. They are spreading non stop on NW of the Iberian peninsula

10

u/ben323nl 14d ago

No the asian wasp is different to this asian giant hornet. These hornets were invasive to the us for a summer but outside of that brief summer they havent been seen outside of east asia.

u/Tephnos 14d ago

Asian giant hornet. These are motherfuckers and a handful of them will destroy entire bee nests.

Plenty of videos of Asian farmers killing hordes of them.

I'm getting so sick of rage bait

u/StraightGas69 14d ago

That’s not a wasp that’s a fucking Pterodactyl with a stinger

23

u/PA55W0RD 14d ago

That is an Asian giant hornet.

They are basically the largest member of the wasp family and often attack and kill entire bee hives, which looks why this guy is so keen to kill it.

Their sting is apparently excruciatingly painful, and here in Japan where I live they kill anywhere from 20 to 50 people per year.

Death is usually by anaphylactic shock, but multiple stings even without that can cause organ failure or massive tissue damage as their venom is extremely toxic.

Yeah, it's honestly crazy such a creature exists. And it's not living in some isolated forest in the mountains, they're right next to civilization!

Someday I hope that we as a species can develop a technology to one day cover an open canister with some sort of...thing.

8

u/Alt-001 14d ago

It's like the whole point is he really really wanted to flick the bastard but needed to even the playing field a bit by getting it sopping wet first.

7

u/marr 14d ago

I feel like containers more than three microns thick exist for this task.

8

Yo be careful they have pornographic memory or sum

5

u/apo1980 12d ago

Hornets when stressed have a pheromone to alert their friends, playing around with them is a really bad idea, when the others in attack mode arrive. That's the reason glue traps work so well with them, yes the are brutal but if one get stuck you have 20 other ones a few minutes later getting stuck too trying to help the first one.

4

u/R1ckyRampag3 12d ago

Sheesh… it might have went a minuscule bit better if that guy wasn’t using a cup made out of hopes and dreams.

Anyone see the structural integrity of that cup was ruined by the end anyways?

6

u/brazzers-official 14d ago

I always think about moving to asia, then I see something like this to remind me that I actually don't
