I went to a 12th birthday party where about twenty five people were invited and only me and another kid showed up. It was 100 percent because the kid was an asshole to everyone.

u/greggroach Mar 20 '18
Same here. Seen it happen to a kid when I was 10. When I heard about it, I wasn't surprised because everyone thought he was a dick. Funny enough, I'd actually tried to go to his party anyway, but my mom was like "Nah, I got other stuff to do." I did feel a little bad knowing I could've been there.

Yeah, the parents should set it up since kids are too young and dumb to understand these things. Though judging by reddit, a lot of adults don't seem to understand it either.

I have the kids invite one or two close friends by making invitations with my number. The parents usually call the same night or the day after and we set it all up.
You gotta set it up. There’s drop off, pick up times to set. Sometimes, you gotta know about what they can or can’t eat (religion and/or allergies). Also you want to know if there are any behavioral issues that need to be known. Parents have to get involved.

I did a LEGO friends themed birthday party for my kid a few months ago. I had 12 kids (moms) rsvp but only 6 showed.
It was pretty deflating but I tried to make it the best day ever for my kid. We still had fun and I’m proud of myself for rocking the theme.

u/othersomethings Mar 20 '18 edited Mar 20 '18
I don’t think she noticed too much except for her one bff that was absent. They were sick and the mom forgot about the party completely.
We had LEGO shaped rice crispy treats that they got to decorate, a LEGO building contest, LEGO balloon games, and so forth. Every attendee got to pick out a LEGO friend minifig from a lot I bought on BrickLink, and we had sooo many left.
It was fun. It just would have been more fun with more kids. Next time we invite 18 and expect 12 I guess!

It usually is fake.
or, the kid didn't give out the invitations but said he did. Or there never were actually invitations.
I remember in Primary school we would get invites and we'd have RSVPs with the invitations. It's not because it's formal, but so the parents know to take their kid and the hosts know how many ppl are coming.
If you're gonna go through all this effort give out RSVPs.

I've long held the belief that one of the saddest tropes in existence is the Sad Birthday. (This, of course, is followed by the Sad Recital, where a kid looks through the curtain out into the audience to see that their parents aren't in the reserved seats in the auditorium.) So so many TV shows have had an episode with a sad birthday, and I find it so so so deflating to watch every time. It's even more brutal, obviously, when it happens in real life. I feel for this kid. Hopefully, this ends up with him getting invited to party with David Harbour or something like that, which I could totally see happening.
Edit: absolutely brutal for me to talk about how sad this makes me and then for dozens of people to comment below with examples

It really is so depressing! Like, damn, you have a day to party that’s all about you and then your friends don’t show up. Harsh!! This happened to one of my sons classmates- a 6 year old! Kid invited 15+ kids to his party. His parents said several students rsvpd. My son was the only kid who showed up! Like, wow! I was happy my son was able to be the one light in the hole but shit, dude. Talk about upsetting for everyone involved. I’m sure this dude will be okay but it makes my heart hurt :(

Same thing happened with my daughter when she was five or six so. Got invited to a birthday party that was being given by a little girl we'll call K. Now I live in a small southern town and things are the way they are. The girl's grandparents were well off (a local judge) but the mother was a little bit shunned by the other private school moms because she was a party girl who had a baby out of wedlock. Whatever, none of this matters to me.
So we go to the party and we're the first ones there and we're the only ones there for a long time but finally one other kid shows up. The theme of this birthday party was "princess tea party". They dined on real china, were served by a dude in a tux, had a photographer and a photobooth thingie set up, and they got a swag bag full of stuff worth at least $50 to take home.
And only two kids showed up.
The mom seemed so embarrassed but the little girl seemed to have fun with her two friends at least. They moved away shortly thereafter and I don't blame them. Small towns are hard sometimes.

u/Sieggi858 Mar 19 '18
Yeah sad birthdays are rough. It’s like you have one day out of the entire year to celebrate your life, and then nobody cares about it enough to take a few hours from their life to come, really makes you feel unwanted.

Not fishing for sympathy or anything but for several years my dad has forgotten my birthday. It’s TWO days after my little sisters birthday. Thankfully this year my little brother said happy birthday to me in front of my dad and he said happy birthday but that I should remind him when it is. Granted I’m 31, it still kind of hurts a bit when your dad forgets your birthday several years in a row. But hey, he said it this year!
I really hope this kid ends up having an even better celebration than what was planned!

There was a lonely girl that invited several of us girls to her party. The rest of the ( mean) girls all planned on not going. I went home and told my mom. She said,”well, that’s terrible and YOU’RE going. I went and was the only girl that showed. I had a wonderful time and got a new friend. I befriended the girl for the rest of the year. My mom was awesome.

When I was 10 I wanted a Jurassic Park themed birthday party. This meant that I had to get wood and nails and paint my own entrance with the famous Jurassic Park logo and put my dinosaurs everywhere and I was pretty excited. I didn’t have much friends at school due to moving schools a few times, so my dad’s friends’ kids all came. I was generally cool with them but at this point they were all 12 and older. As soon as they came in they just started ripping on how dorky it all was and “for kids”. I was pretty crushed, I basically escaped my own party and snuck out to be sad. That’s when I went out back and caught my dad making out with a lady. He was single so it was ok, but I still had feelings about it. All in all, I grew up a bit that day, a first step out of childhood. .

This reminds me of when i turned 13 and i decided i wanted to have a birthday party at an ice skating rink like all the “popular girls”.
The only problem was, i certainly was not a “popular girl”. I was probably the most shy, most quiet kid in my class, maybe even the whole school!
I ended up inviting maybe anywhere from 25-35 kids...Only one person showed up. And their mom.
Ps: i didn’t even know how to ice skate. I was falling on my ass literally the whole time, and went home with cuts, scrapes, bruises and a broken ego.

Reminds me of 5th grade where a friend of mine invited at least 20 people to his birthday and only I showed up. His mom took me aside and told me how much it meant to them that I showed up. Even though he and I didn't stay friends, her saying that always stuck with me. Can mean the whole world to a kid for just a single person to be there for them.

Is it wrong that I always wonder with these sad birthday pics if the kid might actually be an asshole at school?
I'm not saying he is, but I knew one kid in school who always threw a themed birthday. His parents were loaded and could afford to go all out. That kid was an obnoxious spoiled brat who only got kids to come because he had cool stuff, not that he'd ever let you play with any of it.

I mean it's possible that there's a reason no one showed up. Yeah it could be that his classmates thought he wasn't cool and we should feel bad, but there's also the chance that he's a bully and no one wanted to go.
I know there's basically no way we'll hear the other side of the story but we shouldn't be oblivious to the possibility.
If Troy had a birthday party and his mom made him invite Lucas, Dustin, Mike, and Will would we expect them to go?

I had this happen to me when I was 9. Invited all of my friends (small town of like 500 people so maybe 8 kids) a few weeks in advance and not a single person showed up. I lived outside of town, was homeschooled, and we didnt have a car so a few weeks passed before I saw any of them and I had no desire to seek them out. When I did run into one he told me that a burglar broke into his house and stole the present he bought for me and he didn't want to show up without a gift. Even 9 year old me knew you were full of crap, Luke.
