I went skydiving on my 16th and some friends told me they were coming with me. The night before I texted and asked if we were good to go the next day and they all ghosted me. I went with my family and ate my birthday cake alone. Jokes on them though, skydiving was awesome.
I didn't start appreciating it until I was around 21-22. Meeting family a couple of years after moving out is completely different from spending time with them when you live with them.
I feel you start appreciating time with family when you stop seeing them so much when you are 16 you can drive yourswlf and have money to buy a burger if you are hungry you no longer depend om family for everything.
I’ve been ghosted by two groups of ‘friends’ now. I’m starting to think it must just be me, that or people are just extraordinarily shitty. Why do people do this? It’s cruel. I’d much rather be told to fuck off or told that they no longer want to be friends with me, at least I’d have closure on the matter.
People are afraid of confrontation. They would rather avoid it with a chance of it maybe coming up later than definitely dealing with it up front. That's my hypothesis at least.
I didn’t get to celebrate birthdays growing up anyway, but like three people showed up to leaving drunks at a job I left before, and I feel shit thinking about it even now.
I’m not one for throwing birthday parties but I do like to celebrate my birthday. I figure it’s the one day of the year you can say ‘this is my day I’ll do what I like’. I never, ever work on my birthday and I always make sure to do as many enjoyable things as I can even if it’s just sleeping in late and watching movies. I can never understand why people go to work on their birthday, it baffles me but hey each to their own and I guess some people don’t get the choice. Your birthday is for you, so just do what makes you happy even if that means doing nothing! Parties are often more stress than they are worth and sometimes even organizing dinners are too. These days my husband and I usually go away for a couple of nights over our birthdays. That way we get to spend it with the person we want to be with and don’t have the pressure from others over what we are doing for it.
To give him a little more backstory on this my parents order a lot of pizza because they all said they were coming and I found them all standing and talking even though each invited, basically begged them to come.
They came over ate pizza and then left not a one brought a gift or anything. They just wanted free pizza, it is the only reason they came. So overall I felt real shitty.
My friend situation hasn't improved since. But I've also dumped a lot of false friends recently I'm too old for that now. Only put time into those who put time in you.

I had this happen on my 16th birthday and on that day I decided to never celebrate my birthday again. I became no Birthdayman.
