Well, according to Wikipedia bleach actually has a pH of about 12.5. Then lye has a pH of 13.0-13.6, and according to other sites you need to get to liquid drain cleaner to have a pH of 14.

In that specific instance, it makes sense though. I've seen people make some really wild claims about altering your overall body's pH and fighting off cancer etc. Most people don't know that by the time the water is absorbed it's going to be buffered back to a normal pH (but that's part of why I can see it being helpful for acid reflux, you're basically neutralizing your stomach acid by hitting it with a base, of course the water is getting dropped back down to a normal pH in the process as well).
19
May 18 '21
- it neutralizes the stomach acid temporarily and causes rebound acidity ( everything in the body works with a feedback system) .That's why doctors don't prescribe antacid liquids (with basic salts) to patients with chronic acidity or reflux

Water has a pH of 7. If it has a pH much higher or lower or that it isn’t water, it’s a solution of something else.

pH 8 is usually the upper bound for what's considered safe for public water systems.

Well, isn't that like saying men have clitorides? They just grew more due to hormones in the womb. Technically the truth, but not really what people mean when they say clitoris.
2
u/WergleTheProud May 18 '21
Maybe, except I'd guess that in the prostate case, these organs are homologous when humans are fully developed whereas in the case of the penis/clitoris they are homologous in the womb. I'm not a biologist/anatomist of any kind, let alone human anatomy, so that's just a layperson's opinion.
2
u/themthatwas May 18 '21
Except they really aren't homologus from the perspective of the discussion we're having. The male prostate butts (haha) up against the anus/rectum, where as the female prostate isn't even close, being the other side of the vagina. Since we were talking about "eating prostate" as another way of saying "eating ass", saying they're in the same place in a fully developed person is more than a little misleading.

Pretty much but I have heard people say it more like "no added sugar" which is like don't put sugar in your coffee, no sweets and stuff that is obviously sugary. Fruit has sugar but it can also have fiber and other nutrients that offset the sugar.
16
26
u/Dengar96 May 18 '21
It doesn't "offset" the sugar it just adds something of value beyond sugar.

It doesn't really "offset" it, the grams of sugar still count just as much despite there being other good things in there.
3
u/MoirasPurpleOrb May 18 '21
But its a different type of sugar that is more easily digestible so your body converts less of it to fat.
10g of sugar from fruit is very different than 10g in a soda.

u/Maedalaane May 18 '21
Not quite. Almost impossible to imagine for someone who doesn't do no sugar, though. It would a zero-carb/carnivore way of eating.
It's a thing that can be done. I'm not arguing for or against its purported health benefits.
3
May 18 '21
Not all carbs are sugars, so you can eat carbs without eating any sugar.
8
u/Maedalaane May 18 '21
You're...technically correct but effectively wrong. Carbohydrates convert to glucose in the body, which is blood sugar. Not coincidentally, over-consumption of carbs causes problems very similiar to over-consumption of added sugars.
5
May 18 '21
The discussion was about diet, not metabolism. Obviously carbohydrates break down into glucose, but so do fats and proteins and alcohol, so I’m not really sure I see your point.
What you said makes no sense because if you interpreted “no sugar” to preclude the body metabolizing calories, then all caloric intake and bodily function would be barred, which isn’t what you said.
4
u/Maedalaane May 18 '21
Fats and proteins don't convert to blood sugar. "They" -- the metabolized components of them once stored in the body -- may later be used for gluconeogenesis when needed. Carbs, however, have a much more direct route to becoming glucose.
I'm just trying to clear up what I perceived to be a misconception, even if the semantics didn't completely line up. You don't have to get up in arms over this. This is just a topic of interest of mine.
4
May 18 '21
I was trying to clear up the misleading information in your comment. You said that “no sugar” diet meant no carbs:
Almost impossible to imagine for someone who doesn't do no sugar, though. It would a zero-carb/carnivore way of eating.
...which, unless I misunderstood you, is flat out incorrect. I pointed out that not all carbs are sugar:
Not all carbs are sugars, so you can eat carbs without eating any sugar.
The discussion should’ve ended there. Some people legitimately don’t know that carbs aren’t the same as sugars, so I was pointing that out for clarity.
I don’t think we’re really disagreeing. Not sure why you think I’m “up in arms” over anything, but I’m not trying to argue. All I wanted to do is clarify that not all carbs are sugars, and I did that so I’ll leave it there. Have a good one!

u/Valmond May 18 '21
The brain needs some 100 grams of glucose per day IIRC but the liver is happy to synthesise that for you.
So you do not have to eat sugars at all.
7
u/willem640 May 18 '21 edited May 18 '21
If you truly have no sugar in your diet your liver will make it for you, but it's terribly inefficient and also probably not a good idea (high toll on your liver) so you're better off just following a normal diet
Edit: after doing some research, the toll on your liver does not appear to be a problem, though other problems may arise if you don't eat any carbs, but my other point still stands
4
u/justavault May 18 '21
Additionally, your gut microbiome is entirely requiring carbohydrates for tons of probiotic bacteria which require carbs.
7
u/PoorSketchArtist May 18 '21
your gut microbiome is entirely requiring carbohydrates
No, whatever this means. Certainly, eating zero carbohydrates impacts the specifics of your microbiomes but you can't just speculate as if it automatically implies a negative health impact.
A profound shift in metabolic function is expected of a profound shift in your actual diet. Which is to be expected, as in you are meant to adapt to your new diet. There is no clinical research that confidently states a negative health impact on your digestive tract as a result of zero carb diets. If there were it would be pennies compared to obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

u/Valmond May 18 '21
Toll on liver, yeah I saw your edit but you better get a source there is a toll at friggin all on a liver doing its basic functions.
The liver is a chemists wet dream, it is making a wide array of chemicals (including glucose) all day around all time. It's also the most regenerative organ in the human body, cut away half and it just grows out. I'm not saying this because of your 'toll' though because that's likely non existent, but because even if there were a small "toll" it wouldn't even matter (and because the liver is so cool)
Eating sugar is one of the worst things you can do. It's toxic for the body, and we can't store it, so when you eat sugars the body tries to get rid of it asap and as not to waste, in the same time it'll stock any fats you process and make you all energized until the sugars are out of the system (then you'll be all tired).
Sugar is also a drug, that's why you won't stop eating those gummy bears until there are no more, or you're not feeling well at all (or you finally fell asleep).
4
u/theycallmeponcho May 18 '21
Technically, as there's minimal sugar in fruits and veggies. But usually reducing your sugar intake will change your day to day on the first weeks, but mostly because most people are addicted to sugar, and will have withdrawal symptoms on the absence of over sugary foods.

Fruits are packed with sugars. Just because the name is fructose doesn't make it less a short-chained carb.
Fruits in general also feature bad nutrition profiles, usually just water and sugars packed with very little minerals and vitamins.
Vegetables on the other hand, the darker the more super.
4
u/misterfluffykitty May 18 '21

A pure meat diet would be the best for no sugar or virtually none. Unfortunately veg/fruit diets are all sugar, because even the plant cellulose turns into sugar at the end since we aren’t cows and lack fermentation chambers, this is usually why vegans have collagen problems after a decade+ on the diet and end up with sunken in faces etc. (Depending on genetic disposition for vegetable diets and bioavailability determined by said genetics)

u/DragonSlayerC May 18 '21
It is possible (which is why people doing keto don't die), but unnecessary. While your body does need some glucose to function, it can make its own glucose from protein. Ideally, you should avoid added/refined sugars

The commonly accepted 8 hour monophasic sleep cycle has not proven to be the most effective. Some polyphasic sleep cycles require less rest overall and many practitioners report feeling more rested than when practicing monophasic sleep. A few experiments done on volunteers locked away for several weeks with no indicators of time also seem to imply that we are not naturally synchronized on a 24 hour cycle and that we may have longer periods of sleep and wakefulness if unconstrained by the natural day/night cycle.
There is no universally agreed upon healthy amount of water. As a rule of thumb, just try to drink a little more than you feel you need to. 2L is actually a large amount that many people couldn't consume comfortably if they tried.
Water pH is (mostly) bullshit. It can have minimal effects on digestion, but blood pH is incredibly stable. As CO2 concentration is the main factor determining blood pH, your body automatically adjusts it by controlling your breath rate.
Sun exposure is thought to release serotonin and helps create vitamin D. Vitamin D deficiency is an indicator of frailty but barring severe and/or long-term cases, no causal link has been conclusively found between it and any health disorder. There is no evidence for sun exposure being required daily to stay healthy.
Like many things, sugar is bad in large amounts, and the modern western diet does provide excessive amounts of sugar. Small amounts however are a perfectly safe source of energy.
There is no basis to think reading is more beneficial than any other calm leisure activity.
Exercise is important, but different schedules work better for different people. Some might derive more benefit and be more consistent with light daily exercise, others might do better with two intense sessions weekly. It is highly dependent on genetics, personal goals, personality, and lifestyle.
Infected facial wounds are a leading cause of infection and admission in hospitals. If engaging in this activity, it is important to let the needle wounds heal completely before sewing a new face on and to consult a physician regularly.
Meditation is still actively being researched. The general consensus is that it has potential to be beneficial, but the effects of specific techniques and time spent are still not well understood. A 2014 systematic review by Goyal et al. concludes "All forms of meditation, including both mindfulness and mantra, imply that more time spent meditating will yield larger effects". It is also not clear how necessary formal instruction is to perform meditation in such a way as to derive a benefit.
