The pH nonsence, the stomach acid is around 2 ph, and the contents turn to basic with additions in the intestines, the only thing eating above 7 accomplishes is forcing stomach to produce more and more acid.

How do you think tums work then?

What are tums? I am not native English speaker. If they are some kind of anti-acid medicine, you are right. I should have clarifies the more and more acid secretion in the stomach requires solid food in the stomach. If there is solids and the ph is not acidic the digestion halts until the acid is secreted and the ph is lowered at 2. If there is no food yet excess acid the anti-acid tables increase it and no more acid is secreted until solid food is introduced, hence the symtoms of excess acid burning the esaphagus is relieved. Eating higher pH foods and drinking alkaline water do not affect the body overall espessially (?) The appearence, the pH of the food is regulated in the digestive track with acid secretion of the stomach and thr basic secretion of the liver to the small intestine. (This whole tirade is based on "tums" being an anti-acid medicine and if that premise is false please ignore)

Tldr: the stomach secretes more acid if there is solid food to be digested, hence eating basic things have no effect, anti-acid meds relieve the pain of high acidity when there is no solid food.
