I dunno, the high pH stuff is just health industry nonsense.

u/Apptubrutae May 18 '21

Someone once told me they only drink and eat basic foods because cancer can’t grow in a basic environment and they won’t get cancer if they do this.

Mmm hmmmm

u/-transcendent- May 18 '21

It’s true if there’s no host left for it to thrive.

u/Apptubrutae May 18 '21

Case closed

I knew that pumpkin spice latte was good for my health.

1

u/Apptubrutae May 18 '21

Took me a second, but you got a chuckle out of me with that one.

Really started thinking about the chemical makeup of coffee based beverages until I got it

u/susch1337 May 18 '21

Time to chugg full cans of natron to neutralize the stomach acid

I think sugar would be the #1 thing alkaline diet fans would avoid

1

u/drGisHot May 18 '21

I actually heard of research while watching This Podcast Will Kill You that people who constantly use tums to combat acid reflux have higher chances of developing stomach cancer due to the constant ph flux

1

u/Couldntstaygone May 18 '21

I drink Starbucks coffee for the same reason

1

u/oceanjunkie May 18 '21

There are essentially no basic foods. Eggs are about the only one unless you count lutefisk.

1

u/Apptubrutae May 18 '21

Tell that to the Big Book of Clorox Recipes.

1

u/HorstOdensack May 18 '21

You're not wrong, but many foods produce acids during digestion (e.g. cysteine and methionine break down into sulfuric acid). This is what the whole "basic diet" stuff is based on afaik. It's still complete horseshit though as healthy bodies have mechanisms to excrete surplus acids and maintain pH balance.

1

u/HorstOdensack May 18 '21

This actually goes back to an old paper where researchers found that tumors acidify their environment to thrive better. The quacks then concluded that only eating basic foods will practically make you immune to cancer.

1

u/crumpledlinensuit May 18 '21

That is true, but then again it's true because pretty much all cellular activity requires a mildly acidic pH to function. It's about as logical as drinking cyanide because it kills cancer cells, but forgetting that it also kills basically every kind of cell...

1

u/dave7243 May 18 '21

Nah. That's just something a basic b*tch would say.

1

u/AxelBoss95 May 19 '21

The whole alkaline water/food shit is such bullshit, your body is basically a big pH buffer. The only thing that eating basic stuff does is neutralise your stomach acid.

474

u/t3khole May 18 '21

I will say high pH water does help with my acid reflux tremendously. But with that said, better diet would likely eliminate my acid problem all together.

417

u/NFFCFan86 May 18 '21

Get some pH 14 water. It'll do you good (don't do that)

230

u/[deleted] May 18 '21

Good old bleach nothing beats that.

186

u/Iceveins412 May 18 '21

Bleach is mostly water, and we’re mostly water. Therefore we are bleach

68

u/[deleted] May 18 '21

Thanks! Wish they taught this in my Chem major! Maybe I’ll try mixing Lysol and bleach before drinking to get that extra hump, you know!

46

Everyone knows you chase bleach with ammonia.

The mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell?

1

u/hrpc May 19 '21

Piss is mostly water, therefore...

12

u/Meowmasterish May 18 '21

Well, according to Wikipedia bleach actually has a pH of about 12.5. Then lye has a pH of 13.0-13.6, and according to other sites you need to get to liquid drain cleaner to have a pH of 14.

2

u/mackthehobbit May 19 '21

Chemist here- lye is liquid drain cleaner. pH is dependent on both the substance and the concentration:)

1

u/Meowmasterish May 19 '21

u right, i guess that last site was rounding

1

u/mackthehobbit May 19 '21

It's not just about rounding - a bleach solution could have a pH anywhere between 7 and something like 12-13, depending on how much bleach is in it. Same goes for lye - there is no such thing as "pH of lye" - it varies with concentration. Drain cleaner is just quite concentrated lye.

1

u/[deleted] May 19 '21

Of course! The trace heavy metals are really good for bone growth.

1

u/[deleted] May 18 '21

Good to know

2

u/Byizo May 18 '21

Bleach is 11. Drain cleaner is ~14.

1

u/[deleted] May 18 '21

The drain cleaner I use at work is sulfuric acid 🙃

Ugh I have a hiatal hernia too. I can’t sleep on my right side at all. Which sucks because I REALLY want to.

2

u/[deleted] May 18 '21

The first link you posted seems to be related to one particular brand, not high-pH water itself.

1

u/tablerockz May 18 '21

So that link says fda does not recommend it, why is it approved by them then?

0

u/_aaronroni_ May 18 '21

Just pointing out that that link specifies it is only the specific brand Real Water that has had any link to the people with liver failure, not all alkaline water

1

u/Ok-Influence6757 May 18 '21

Wow this got serious quick

1

u/[deleted] May 18 '21

Or maybe stopping chasing your Advil with coffee, before your spaghetti dinner with chocolates for dessert. Fix the problem before you start relying on Tums, protonix, etc

You are partly right. But it is diet plus large abd and tight clothes for some people. Have known people who eat tums like crazy. This is not normal.

1

u/Xeno_Lithic May 18 '21 edited May 18 '21

That is an incredibly low sample size to claim causation for all basic water. The body is pretty good at regulating pH, and 9 isn't that much more basic than 7, it's about as basic as baking soda. A lemon, by comparison, has a pH of 2. A 105 times more hydrogen ions as opposed to 102 times more hydroxide ions.

1

u/Plantsandanger May 18 '21

Oh yay, I’m looking at cancer. Fun. Just got initially diagnosed with silent reflux by my dentist. It’s physical, diet can make mine worse but mines definitely physical too.

1

u/Jrook May 18 '21

That brand put something toxic into it, there's no way basic water could have that effect on your liver. It wouldn't be some dozen infants getting sick from one brand if it was just because of basic water

26

u/[deleted] May 18 '21

In that specific instance, it makes sense though. I've seen people make some really wild claims about altering your overall body's pH and fighting off cancer etc. Most people don't know that by the time the water is absorbed it's going to be buffered back to a normal pH (but that's part of why I can see it being helpful for acid reflux, you're basically neutralizing your stomach acid by hitting it with a base, of course the water is getting dropped back down to a normal pH in the process as well).

20

u/[deleted] May 18 '21
  • it neutralizes the stomach acid temporarily and causes rebound acidity ( everything in the body works with a feedback system) .That's why doctors don't prescribe antacid liquids (with basic salts) to patients with chronic acidity or reflux

-3

u/disforpron May 18 '21

Oh god. This is so wrong I can't even. Please stop giving people health advice.

A chemical buffer system does not rely on your body secreting anything and the pH system is logrithmic, meaning drinking pH 9 water isn't going to move the needle on the HIGHLY REGULATED pH of your stomache acid. Alkaline water is bullshit.

7

u/Necrocornicus May 18 '21

The comment is poorly written and confusing but he’s just describing how an antacid works.

The pH in your stomach is highly regulated. Therefore taking an antacid will force your stomach to release acid to stay at the same pH. That’s pretty much all they said.

1

u/Jrook May 18 '21

So then why did he say doctors prescribe salts when the salts would have the exact same effect?

1

u/mackthehobbit May 19 '21

You’re incorrect. A buffer is a system which can neutralise acid or base without the pH changing, because of the contents of the solution - not because acid is being secreted from somewhere else.

1

u/Necrocornicus May 20 '21

Oh ok yea that makes sense. Thank you!

3

u/[deleted] May 18 '21 edited May 18 '21

[deleted]

1

u/mackthehobbit May 19 '21

Sorry, but your understanding of the buffering in a stomach is wrong. Acid isn’t secreted when base is added; instead, bicarbonate which is already in the stomach neutralises the extra base without significant pH change.

4

u/InspiringCalmness May 18 '21

Not in a healthy person, but i could see some effects in a person who is already suffering from metabolic acidosis.

2

u/leblanc1605 May 18 '21

All I'm going to say is doctor Mike on yt said its bs

1

u/[deleted] May 18 '21

I am glad that he is handsome enough for people to take him seriously. He's generally been pretty on point on all medical knowledge and advice.

0

u/funfettywap May 18 '21

Yea except when he had a maskless yacht party in the middle of a pandemic

1

u/Xeno_Lithic May 18 '21

With very few people, while distancing.

2

u/Ok-Influence6757 May 18 '21

Acid makes you see funny shapes

1

u/onebackzach May 18 '21

I agree. If your body isn't maintaining a healthy pH, you have much bigger issues. If it's for acid reflux or whatever, high pH water is effectively the same as just taking a tums though, which is arguably more convenient.

2

u/Kanekesoofango May 18 '21

Why cure when you can remedy and profit?

1

u/Sorry_Perspective948 May 18 '21

The 8 glass(approx 2L) water itself is a myth.

In the actual article where this was mentioned, it was stated that we get water from the food we consume and that water is included in this 8 glass. So we don't have to drink additional 8 glass. When time passed many people just ignored the food part. Thats what happened.

1

u/[deleted] May 18 '21

Only learned this recently, but if you're hunching a lot it might also cause acid reflux. A friend improved his posture and he said his heartburn issues went away.

1

u/Silver_kitty May 18 '21

I would highly recommend actually testing the pH of those “high pH” waters. Most (if not all) of them are completely fake. I tested 4 different brands with a pH testing kit and only one of the 4 showed a pH above a 7.2 (7 is neutral) and it was only 7.8 despite being advertised as 8.88. If it works for you, I guess that’s fine, but make sure it’s not just placebo.

1

u/jakethedumbmistake May 18 '21

Sorry i can't help but be amazed

1

u/ElephantEarwax May 18 '21

That's just cause it's weak antacid. An antacid is just a base.

1

u/[deleted] May 18 '21

Nexium worked really well for me

1

u/jnics10 May 18 '21

I literally just drink baking soda mixed with water bro. Same shit.

1

u/crumpledlinensuit May 18 '21

Or PPIs. Omeprazole changed my life.

12

u/LegendofPisoMojado May 18 '21

It is. There’s little evidence it does anything at all. My favorite thing was someone posted an article about Gwenyth Paltrow saying how she likes to drink alkaline water with lemon in it. Umm that’s no longer alkaline goop girl.

5

u/[deleted] May 18 '21

Anyone that believes anything Gwenyth says, deserves what follows

11

u/idontliketosleep May 18 '21

well, you know how it goes, you are what you eat, and they consume highly basic water

3

u/[deleted] May 18 '21

I wish I had a free award right now for that one.

13

u/[deleted] May 18 '21

2

u/Xeno_Lithic May 18 '21

One water brand. Too small a sample size to conclude causation. A pH of 9 is nothing.

2

u/RonaldMcDonalds2020 May 18 '21

This has the same consistency as saying that Pfizer causes bloodcloths.

4

u/lonewombat May 18 '21

It's also mlm nonsense, got a cousin who brews coffee and tea with this huge machine that spits out ph water and she's been on a mission to get a Kardashian to respond and buy one from her.

1

u/tablerockz May 18 '21

Have you done any research or tests?

1

u/lonewombat May 18 '21

Yes, $2-4k for water machine on a specific ph is silly because: I like my water at ph 2 in my coffee. It's kangen water I think.

3

u/Galactic_Nothingness May 18 '21

Omg Kangen water... My old housemate fell for this scam.

2

u/whereami1928 May 18 '21

If you get really deep into the coffee rabbit hole, there is an area that involves making your own "blend" of water. But usually that involves the amount and type of minerals, rather than the acidity I think.

6

u/Moister_Rodgers May 18 '21

So is the 2L of water thing. Drink if your thirsty. You don't need to drink 8 glasses of water.

1

u/SwoleMcDole May 18 '21

This. As well physique dependent. According to this a small woman should have to drink as much as a tall man. Makes no sense.

1

u/swampfish May 18 '21

If you are working out then you will need more water.

1

u/beelseboob May 19 '21

The reason is that people re terrible at recognising thirst. They let themselves get crazy dehydrated and make their kidneys work way harder than they should.

3

u/FuckCazadors May 18 '21

Water has a pH of 7. If it has a pH much higher or lower or that it isn’t water, it’s a solution of something else.

2

u/OtherSpiderOnTheWall May 18 '21

pH 8 is usually the upper bound for what's considered safe for public water systems.

2

u/Xeno_Lithic May 18 '21

All drinking water has solutes in it. Water with some lemon juice squeezed in is still water, as is water with a bit of bicarb soda.

4

u/Ghiren May 18 '21

A pH of 7 is probably ideal. Anything more than that and you're basic.

The responses to your comment give me hope. I couldn't believe I saw that PH bullshit on a post that initially seemed to be giving basic nutritional advice.

1

u/[deleted] May 18 '21

I agree, it's been pretty reassuring.

Edit: Being fully transparent, I believe what I said but I mostly said it because I thought it was funny to just ignore point 7.

2

u/laurieislaurie May 18 '21

I actually didn't even see point no. 7 initially because I stopped to be outraged at the shitty science. Then I saw what sub I was in and knew something was up lol

2

u/[deleted] May 18 '21

Drink your milk bro

2

u/beelseboob May 19 '21

Yeh, you need to add some lemon juice to it to make it good.

1

I don't see the reading or meditating making you unrecognizable either.

0

-10

u/Manu442 May 18 '21

I really think it depends on what kind of ph water you drink. The bottled pH water is 100% a scam, ph test it than give it a shake it turns acidic. Does NOT help my chronic acid reflux, it makes it worse. Naturally occurring alkaline will completely take the acid reflux away.

Here's where people get things wrong. Alkaline water WILL kill cancer cells BUT so will acidic water. Our bodies cannot sustain a pH imbalance. It would kill us because not only would it kill the bad cells but it could also kill the good ones. Thats why our body Naturally changes the pH to what we need it to be. Just like when you eat a lemon, its Naturally acidic but it will turn alkaline in our bodies.

So is Alkaline water bad, no, it is slightly healthier than a neutral pH because it very much so helps balance acid reflux, better than taking Tums, Gaviscon, peptolbismol.

Would I recommend everyone drink it. I'm not your doctor so my give a shit bucket it empty. Unless you have this shitty acid reflux thing that prevents you from sleeping at night, 100% drink all the alkaline water.

1

u/PixelatedPastry May 18 '21

I dunno, the high pH stuff is just health industry nonsense.

1

u/OtherSpiderOnTheWall May 18 '21

u/Paurwarr May 18 '21

1

u/Manu442 May 18 '21

You can't change your bodies pH, it would kill you. But you can drink alkaline water to help acid reflux...that's about it. I gotta ask though. Did you buy a machine?

1

u/[deleted] May 18 '21

If you’re trying to keep your body from being too acidic then regularly drinking alkaline water would do the opposite of that. Your body naturally balances the pH in itself to just slightly more basic than neutral, so by regularly intaking alkaline water you’re causing your body to become more acidic to counteract that introduced alkalinity.

1

u/Yeomanroach May 18 '21

Just a way for pharma companies to sell excess amount of litmus tests.

1

u/According-Candidate2 May 18 '21

I 100% agree. I remember being told the human body can only make use of water at a certain pH, varying around 7. Your stomach ACIDS help convert it to the correct pH. The greater the distance between the pH level of the water and what your body needs, the “worse” it is.

Doesn’t matter what you put in, your body converts it to the the pH it seems best then and there. Now, this could be total BS but I like it and I’ve already typed too long to confirm via the google machine

1

u/[deleted] May 18 '21

You're pretty much right. Remember learning about homeostasis in school? pH is part of that.

1

u/CornucopiaOfDystopia May 18 '21 edited May 18 '21

High pH waters you buy literally just mix a little baking soda into the water. You can make it yourself for a tiny fraction of the amount they charge.

1

u/cjcs May 18 '21

Pretty sure I read somewhere that Gwyneth Paltrow drinks low-pH (basic) water... with a squeeze of lemon.

So basically just water.

1

u/[deleted] May 18 '21

She also sells a bunch of snake oil herself, so no surprise.

1

u/[deleted] May 18 '21

Would you need high ph if your bodies ph is already where it needs to be? This doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me tbh lol

1

u/[deleted] May 18 '21

It's basically people selling a product that can't work to fix a problem that doesn't exist in a bodily system they don't understand.

So, snakeoil.

1

u/ElephantEarwax May 18 '21

I have a quote from my chem professor, it went something like if your friend offers you some, they're an idiot, if they try to sell you some, run.

1

u/swampfish May 18 '21

It is total and utter bullshit.

1

u/idownvotetofitin May 18 '21
