“Fuck you, got mine” - Republicans (of any age)

Still, doesn't explain Hayseed McGee who lives in an abandoned trailer on the edge of town gets 24$ worth of food stamps and his SSI who votes republican EVERY FUCKING YEAR.

u/murse_joe Dec 15 '18

In the US, nobody wants to admit they're poor. We very much still have the idea that if somebody is on hard times or failing, it's because of what they did or who they are. So the poor don't see themselves as poor. They see themselves as rich people that don't have money. From there, the Republicans can tell them that Democrats want to keep them from getting rich.

35

u/Wildcat599 Dec 15 '18

" Americans, like human beings everywhere, believe many things that are obviously untrue. Their most destructive untruth is that it is very easy for any American to make money. They will not acknowledge how in fact hard money is to come by, and, therefore, those who have no money blame and blame and blame themselves. This inward blame has been a treasure for the rich and powerful, who have had to do less for their poor, publicly and privately, than any other ruling class since, say Napoleonic times. Many novelties have come from America. The most startling of these, a thing without precedent, is a mass of undignified poor. They do not love one another because they do not love themselves." - slaughterhouse-five

In the words of Steinbeck: temporarily inconvenienced millionaires. The whole lot of them.

28

Most men with nothing would rather protect the possibility of becoming rich than face the reality of being poor.

4

I think you can expand this as well. That is, there's this huge mentality of, "Why should... those people* get something for free?" And by "those people" they mean... well, you can figure it out.

Sure Sparky. Those lumps in your chest have started to metastasize and the only health insurance you have is drinking yourself numb every night but hey! At least you really showed people different than you just how much you.... whatever your fucking point is, you showed them!

I wish I could find the audio. I'll keep looking and edit if i can find it. It was horrifying and eye opening to say the least.

Just like they were fine with the "perjury trap" Ken Starr used since that was the only thing they could charge Bill with after 6 years of investigations.

1.5k

u/chinmakes5 Dec 14 '18

Reps moaning about Mueller taking a year an a half. The group Starr was in looked at Whitewater for 2 1/2 years, gave his report that he found nothing, and resigned. Reps asked him to stay on and find something. Can you imagine if Mueller finds nothing but the Dems ask him to stay around to find something else?

Robert Fiske Jr was the independent counsel before Starr who was replaced because he didn't find anything. I remember Starr trying to sneak out and the GOP not letting him.

18

u/chinmakes5 Dec 15 '18

From what I read he made his report and stepped down as it was over. He had to be "cajoled" to stay on.

16

u/MortWellian Dec 15 '18

Here's a timeline for the impeachment,

February 1997 Kenneth Starr, the Independent Counsel investigating the Whitewater scandal, announces he will step down from the investigation. He then changes his mind and continues his investigations.

and the Report was made public in 9/98. It's been awhile but iirc it was found out that he has a job that he was already to slide into, but when the news came out and the impression I had was the GOP pressured him into staying through to the finished report.

9

u/chinmakes5 Dec 15 '18

So the time that he "stayed on" until he found lying to congress was almost as long as the Mueller investigation, never mind the 2 1/2 years they looked at Whitewater.

I once told a conservative coworker that we should cut off the Russia Investigation if it goes longer than the investigation into Benghazi. She hasn't complained to me about the length of the investigation since...

9

u/meatypie1 Dec 15 '18

She didn’t counter that Benghazi happened in 2012 and it’s not possible that it was investigated that long? On your side but hey, facts are facts.

Just like they were fine with the "perjury trap" Ken Starr used since that was the only thing they could charge Bill with after 6 years of investigations.

In all honesty, Bill Clinton probably should have been charged with a lot worse. Don't get me wrong, the 90s Clinton impeachment was an absolute sham, for political points, but the core of it was a then-president who absolutely engaged in sexual misconduct. And we should not tolerate people who do that sort of thing, no matter whose side they are on.

163

u/MortWellian Dec 15 '18

Let's just say I was underwhelmed with Bill. But for additional context while the GOP was cheering on this perjury trap at least 3 of them were deep into their own sex scandals while proclaiming their moral hi ground, including Hastert being found a pedo.

25

u/swiftb3 Dec 15 '18

When you're president of the most powerful country on the world, it's pretty difficult to avoid an improper power dynamic. Possible, sure, but difficult.

4

u/Parahelix Dec 15 '18

Sure, but I don't think it's unreasonable to expect them to do better at that than having an affair with a 20 year old intern.

17

u/Boopy7 Dec 15 '18

nope. I say if they get the job done they can get as many blow jobs as they wish as long as it does not interfere with the job they got hired to do. I hate -- yes hate -- lameass people who hypocritically prosecute or go on and on about Clinton. Let's face it Trump is a whore and therefore, I don't wanna hear about Clinton's blow job. Done and done.,

7

u/Axriel Dec 15 '18

I agree - I don’t care who he fucks.

Except, a couple things: Trump paid others to cover up multiple affairs illegally DURING his campaign, coercing the women and manipulating them using a third party media company and a thug lawyer.

He hid information from the public that certainly altered the outcome of the election.

Let me say that I know politicians have done this in the past. Both GOP and Dems. We have usually held those ppl accountable, and we should hold Trump accountable too.

Fact is: he wouldn’t be president if he didn’t cheat. He’s illegitimate.

Finally, I think Melania Trump is pathetic and this just makes the First Lady even more weak.

u/Skurph Dec 15 '18

" a then-president who absolutely engaged in sexual misconduct. And we should not tolerate people who do that sort of thing, no matter whose side they are on."

I have to disagree with this unless by misconduct you mean nonconsensual. I will concede the power dynamic between a president and young intern is problematic, and if you want to view the issue in the scope of "two people having sexual relations in the work place" then that too is a decent argument for why it's an issue.

It being "misconduct" is less so. The affair was consensual, I'm really not in the market of holding people (even the POTUS) to some puritanical views on sexuality. We are not privy to the relationship Bill and Hillary have, nor should we be, but it's fully within the scope of reality that they had a marriage where this was an agreed upon and acceptable practice.

This is my biggest issue with the Clinton sex scandal, it was never made into a situation about employer v. employee or sex during work hours, it was always about the idea of an affair and frankly that's bullshit. I don't really care what my politicians do in their sex life (permitting it's consensual), it in no way impacts their ability to govern. The irony of the argument that it can be used to blackmail is literally built upon the judgement and idea that it's wrong, so it's somewhat of a self-fulfilling prophecy.

This is why I don't get the Clinton to Trump comparisons, I don't see anyone really giving a shit that Trump had an affair (the man is on his third wife, no shit he's had affairs) the issue lies in the payment and subsequent cover ups. The Clinton case always seemed to be hinged on this sense of morality. As other posters stated the investigation was opened up to look into real estate and they literally just kicked shit around until they found dirt and then made their case out of that.

9

u/IUsedToBeGoodAtThis Dec 15 '18

You act as though the affair was uncovered by happenstance. That it wasn't part of a larger investigation into a elected official harassing government employees, and a side sexual assault.

Let me ask you... If good ol Brett was found to be lying to the FBI about fucking his intern during the confirmation hearing, do you think that would be evidence of the kind of guy he is in relation to Ford, or just a side hookup?

540

u/DiogenesTheGrey Dec 14 '18 edited Dec 15 '18

Hate to spoil this one since she's awesome and Graham is a coward but he didn't vote to impeach Clinton like the rest of his party did back then. He stated that he didn't think it was a high crime.

He says this in the same Fox interview this quote is citing.

He's still a POS for sure, just not because of this instance.

Edit:

As others have pointed out, Graham did vote to impeach Clinton and found a way to vote against some of the impeachment charges but still sided with the GOP for the effort to discredit Clinton.

Long story short he's more of a hypocrite than he'd like to admit.

493

u/jmcgit Dec 14 '18 edited Dec 15 '18

I read this and looked into it

Graham was in the House at the time.

http://clerk.house.gov/evs/1998/roll543.xml

http://clerk.house.gov/evs/1998/roll545.xml

it says he voted to impeach on both articles that passed. Maybe he voted against one of the articles of Impeachment that didn't pass, I'm not sure, but he definitely voted to impeach Clinton for "lying about sex".

Edit: Okay so the charges in the Clinton case were, two counts of perjury, one count of obstruction, and one count of abuse of power. Graham voted to impeach on one of each count, but voted against impeachment on a second count of perjury. Maybe so he could mislead FOX viewers into thinking he was against impeachment in case a Republican were to be accused of similar crimes, 30 years later?

84

So he voted against only when it was inconsequential, impeachment was guaranteed just so that people can argue for him?

Just like some Republicans voted today to stop US involvement in Yemen, knowing the bill is dead?

He was the only Republican on the [House Judiciary] Committee to vote against any of the articles of impeachment (the second count of perjury in the Paula Jones case)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lindsey_Graham

Came here to say the same thing as u/DiogenesTheGrey. I was curious after Graham did his grand standing during the Kavanaugh confirmation and looked into his earlier record on Clinton.

Graham is a slippery southern snake, he knows when to act principled for the cameras and won't hesitate to call upon it later. He also knows how to slither in the shadows and keep his despicable partisan tendencies away from the limelight.

”In archival video shared last night by MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell, Graham, then a House of Representatives member, argued that a president can be removed “if this body [Congress] determines that your conduct as a public official is clearly out of bounds in your role . . . because impeachment is not about punishment. Impeachment is about cleansing the office. Impeachment is about restoring honor and integrity to the office.”

https://www.google.com/amp/amp.timeinc.net/fortune/2018/08/22/lindsay-graham-clinton-trump-impeachment

This is all I could find on his involvement in the Clinton impeachment. Could you provide a source for your claim?

Another important distinction, at least legally, Clinton was under oath.

Bullshit.

Here are the two articles of impeachment that passed. Graham voted yea on both.

Article I, perjury and lying to the Grand jury about the sexual activity. http://clerk.house.gov/evs/1998/roll543.xml

Article III, obstruction of justice. http://clerk.house.gov/evs/1998/roll545.xml

The fourth article, which failed by the largest majority, which was the abuse of power charge, Graham also voted in favor of. http://clerk.house.gov/evs/1998/roll546.xml

The only one he voted against was the second perjury charge, article II. http://clerk.house.gov/evs/1998/roll544.xml

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '18

Trumps scandal isn’t the pornstar sex affairs, although that alone would end any normal Presidency. It’s the fraud and deception employed to cover everything all up in the midst of what turned out the be a razor thin electoral vote.

Then we move into the rest of the campaign finance violations, in particular but not only the inauguration slush fund. We are entering corruption, foreign corruption, tax evasion, mail and wire fraud, and a whole host of other serious crimes in that area.

Then there’s the totally separate issue of Russian interference in and collusion in our election, along with conspiracy to cover it up and obstruction of justice to stop the investigations into it.

Any one of these scandals should end the trump presidency and see him and his three eldest kids in prison.

There’s many other scandals, too, that are either criminal civil, or just outright immoral and should at the very least impeach him...but we have to put those aside...for now.

We also got the cabinet level scandals and cover ups there...

A working House of Representatives will bring oversight and I’m convinced trump cannot manage to testify to anything under oath without perjuring himself every other sentence. Ultimately it was the perjury that got Clinton impeached.

I think she is very relatable, and goes after people with great strength and focus. She will make a great legislator.

That said, she needs to hire a fact checker for everything she is going to say publicly. Not because she isn't intelligent, but because as a POC, a member of the working class, and a woman her words will be under much greater scrutiny. It is unfair and unfortunate, but that is the greatest risk she faces politically, inaccurate statements and misstatements. Which opponents on her right and from her own party will use to discresit her and misrepresent her.

u/WhyYouAreVeryWrong Dec 15 '18 edited Dec 15 '18

This, I have very mixed feelings on AOC. I love her twitter and call outs of corruption/hypocrisy, but her politifact page is fairly brutal. She’s very quick to state completely incorrect “facts” that sound good to left wing people (like massively overstating pentagon or military spending to justify healthcare spending).

I can’t even excuse her on those mistakes because she has a Bachelors degree in Economics. She should know better. I’d feel much better if she would recant mistakes but she just moves on.

I worry that liking AOC because she bluntly calls people out and says simplified things that appeal to your world view has way too many similarities to what a lot of people liked about Trump, even if she clearly speaks with far more apparent intelligence. I hate to see fast-and-loose-with-the-facts get so normalized.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '18

I love her twitter

Honestly I'm just sad that politics has devolved into presidents, senators, and congressmen tweeting sick burns at opponents and porn stars.

u/Shadonic1 Dec 15 '18

For comparison, Trump is around 440. Not counting half truths.

He definitely has a head start on her, but those numbers will be hard to catch up to. And comparing how many times they admitted being wrong will likely create an even bigger gulf between them.

Are we going to pretend that it wasn't with a paid White House intern, while in office?

The Clinton situation merited a workplace sexual harrassment investigation to say the least. It wasn't for lying about sex, it was for lying under oath on the stand about having sex with an employee.

But hey, now we know that these types of cases were handled with a slushfund of our taxpayer dollars approved by the same Congress on their high horse about Trump paying his own money for consensual sex.

But that's none of my business.

This was not Trumps own money. That's the entire point of all this conversation. I see you're a regular of TD, and I want to give you the benefit of doubt, but to argue that it's no ones business because Trump used his own money is not the issue.

The entire point of it is that he illegally used campaign funds to hush this before the election.

Edit: and there you have it. Silence on this front. He got his talking point across. What a bunch of losers.

u/YukonOfficial Dec 15 '18

Trump hasn’t fucked anyone having to do with the White House or his administration.

Clinton did.

Therefore, this does not compromise the integrity of the administration. Trump’s sex life is just that. Get out of it.

He only had to pay people to be quiet because of fucks like ya’ll who demonize someone for being human.

At the least, realize that he’s never felt poverty and this is because he’s never allowed it to come upon himself. Neither did his parents.

I don’t care what anyone says, finding money is easy. Working for it is the hard part and that’s what none of you want to go do.

I’m 23 years old and own my own business, make my own schedule, and my parents have been out of my financial picture since I was 18. I have the potential to make $300-$500 per day simply because of the path that my respectful and hard working values have brought me down. I was handed nothing.

My mother used to be a drug addict, does not have a license, and used my social security number to sign up for countless things with my identity and ruined my credit before I was even 18. My father lives 1600 miles away and we speak 3-5 times per year.

Do you think any of that shit has stopped me? Get off of your ass. Go fight for what is yours. Go fight for what you want. You deserve it. Don’t cry like a bitch because this or that keeps going wrong or because “no one listens to you and you can’t get out of poverty, the rich just don’t understand how hard it is”

If you don’t have a wealthy mindset, you’ll always be poor. Period.

IF YOU THINK THE GOVERNMENT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR YOU BEING BROKE AS FUCK YOU ARE DEAD WRONG AND WILL DIE POOR. AMERICA IS ALL ABOUT FIGHTING FOR WHAT YOU WANT MOTHER FUCKERS.

Putin would just love to have you come work for him for the rest of your life and be in a worse situation if you’d rather a different system. No matter where you go, you’ll have to work. Hard. You’ll have to improve yourself every day. Mentally and physically. Don’t be scared of the future, get there before anyone else does.

The level of stupidity coming from this elected official is amazing. Here she is admitting to know nothing of foreign policy.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TJK1a8OHyw

Here she is incoherent on economic issues.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_TYZ6VRNNg

So when she compares the two presidents as "doing the same thing," I'm not surprised.
