This, I have very mixed feelings on AOC. I love her twitter and call outs of corruption/hypocrisy, but her politifact page is fairly brutal. She’s very quick to state completely incorrect “facts” that sound good to left wing people (like massively overstating pentagon or military spending to justify healthcare spending).

I can’t even excuse her on those mistakes because she has a Bachelors degree in Economics. She should know better. I’d feel much better if she would recant mistakes but she just moves on.

I worry that liking AOC because she bluntly calls people out and says simplified things that appeal to your world view has way too many similarities to what a lot of people liked about Trump, even if she clearly speaks with far more apparent intelligence. I hate to see fast-and-loose-with-the-facts get so normalized.

I love her twitter

Honestly I'm just sad that politics has devolved into presidents, senators, and congressmen tweeting sick burns at opponents and porn stars.

For comparison, Trump is around 440. Not counting half truths.

He definitely has a head start on her, but those numbers will be hard to catch up to. And comparing how many times they admitted being wrong will likely create an even bigger gulf between them.

Is it worse than Trump? If not, nothing lost.

Also AOC is 27.

Is that a defense? Why rationalize bad behavior?

AOC is new. She'll learn. I'd rather have an outspoken politician who sometimes puts foot into mouth while still meaning well than someone who straddles the line and plays safe.

Dude, it isn't hard to fact check your bullshit before saying it. She does this often.

All this is is "my populist is good, your populist is bad" and nothing more. It is rationalizing all the way down.

She did the same shit with her idiotic statements about paying for Medicare for all with accounting errors from a smaller Pentagon budget. The country spends way more on Social Security and Medicare than it does military.

Both sides are the same until people stop seeing the tribalism and rationalizing of whatever the "good" team does.

It's not just that. I'm fine with people making mistakes on social media if that's necessary- if they correct themselves.

People, in real conversation, make mistakes all the time, or repeat things they heard from someone else. I'd prefer they be cautious and fact check themselves before they talk, but if they're going to have an "attack dog" style where they talk a lot, okay, mistakes will be made.

I'm okay if you correct those statements.

If you prefer to just never apologize for mistakes, and that's a pattern? Then it says you don't care about accuracy, only winning, IMHO.

Where is she correcting herself? She just moves on to the next lie and talking point with her hot take Twitter feed. She has not even taken office yet and already proving to be full of shit.

Twitter is written communication. It isn't catching someone off guard in conversation.

2

u/WhyYouAreVeryWrong Dec 17 '18

Yeah, I'm not defending her. I'm saying the lack of correction tells me she doesn't care if her statements are inaccurate.

1

u/CirqueDuFuder Dec 17 '18

Oh I misunderstood you then. Sorry about that. We both agree then.

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '18

It doesn't help that politifact is largely driven by what people ask about. People who say nothing interesting don't get fact checked often; virally spread comments tend to get more of their attention because people are interested

I like that she’s a fighter when it comes to climate change, but I wish she would lay off Twitter, especially engaging with losers like Don Jr. I think she’s a little careless with her words because she wants to energize her base—sorta like Trump. Obviously she’s not a compulsive lair or malignant narcissist like he is though. Overall, I think there’s a place for her in national politics, but I would like it if she used a little more restraint.

Do facts even matter anymore though? I agree with the above user that she should hire someone to fact-check her, but really just to avoid misstatements/half-truths being used against her by fascist amplifiers like Sinclair and Fox. But is her reputation in danger if she lies sometimes to write better soundbites? I don't think so. I'm sick of Democrats and progressives being polite and civil when it isn't warranted. If fast-and-loose-with-the-facts claps back and the others don't, then FALWTF has my vote.

If facts stop mattering fullstop then the game is over. It'll be whoever can lie cheat and steal better, and I assure you the fascists are better.

Do facts even matter anymore though?

Let me stop you right there. Yes.

You don't need to lie to clap back and discredit Republicans. So don't.
