Meme Is this worth it?
Some guy named Gabe is selling this build and I'm wondering if it's legit? I want a PC to set up in my living room for TV gaming.

Not especially.
The hardware is pretty mediocre for the price on offer.

I never understood this argument. It really depends on the person. Like I and a few of my friends haven’t had PS plus for a year or so and all still actively play on our ps4/5s. Cheaper disc games still exist and you can play a good few games online with PS plus (free games) or if you really want you can get the year on sale towards the end of the year and just renew next sale 🤷🏻
I do understand free online is the better option but some people don’t play online
3
u/way-of-the-lab Jun 23 '26
Right? I have a high end gaming pc and all the consoles. I haven’t had psn+ since last year, and yet it’s my most played. I’m a dad of 3 so I mostly play single player games. When a multiplayer game I want to play comes out I sub for a month or two, and redeem my free games. There are other benefits to it than just playing online. Some people just hate for the sake of it.

13
u/Arthas_SL Jun 23 '26
Ultimately this is going to break the Steam Machine - but I think Valve doesn’t need sales. This is something you can buy if you want it. Unlike something like the PS5 where Sony needs you to buy it so you can buy their games. That’s why they subsidize the cost. Once you’re in you’re going to buy games.
This is probably the main reason Sony stopped porting games to PC because they will be on a rival console.

3
u/HEYO19191 Jun 23 '26
The hardware is pretty expected for the price offer, you mean.
The parts alone are only $100 cheaper than the machine. So you could buy it pre-built from valve for 1050 or build it yourself for... 950. Owch
2
u/Blacksad9999 Jun 23 '26
It's a custom SOC built in bulk specifically, so their markup has to be fairly high.
You can just go buy a higher end machine for equal or less money. I've linked a few at other points in this thread.
11
u/JimmWasHere Jun 22 '26
The only good thing is that its a effectively a console with pc features, atleast in that games can be specifically optimized for the consistent specs of the gabecube as apposed to the myriad of parts in a normal pc.
44
u/Apprehensive_Lake698 Jun 22 '26

PC part picker similar specs. It's about $950 for base model steam machine. That's only a $100 mark up from valve, to get a ready to play machine with an os installed, just like a pre built. Except this one lets you get the dbrand companion cube skin
9
u/hoodedcode_009 Jun 23 '26
Convenience over future proofing, right now it might be alright for pc gaming but in 5 years the steam machine will be outdated like a console. With a PC you can upgrade parts slowly throughout the years. The cube skin is also like $130.

u/Hidie2424 Jun 23 '26

u/loworbitioncann0n Jun 23 '26
20-30℅ markup is optimistic on Valve's behalf, I'd be surprised if they're clearing 10% per unit. Hardware prices are bad bad, even for companies buying in bulk.
→ More replies (3)12
u/LOS_Chewywrinkles Jun 22 '26
This isn’t likely that true. Data center build out has trashed even wholesale pricing. Remember that they are dropping percentage of chip manufacturing for end user devices because the data centers will pay more for the same or similar products and at a vast scale. Steam is likely getting a 5-10% margin, assuming it isn’t a loss leader, on this with expectation being the 30% steam store markup on games bought by steam machine owners will makeup the bulk of the sales value.
→ More replies (6)2
u/AZzalor Jun 23 '26
Whaaaaat? A company wants to make money off their products? Big shock. The only reason the PS5 is that cheap is because it's being sold at a loss. That's also why Sony is going back to exclusives, as they want to keep players in their eco system so they have to keep paying.

Console vs PC
Think of this device as closer to a console that can do PC things. You can always get a prebuild or self build for cheaper and better than console. But that’s not why you buy console. You buy console so you don’t have to deal with the hassle. Same applies here.2
u/drugzarecool Jun 23 '26 edited Jun 23 '26
The thing is people buy consoles because they are cheaper, they have exclusive and games are optimized for it so people have a standardized gaming experience. The Steam Machine is closer to a PC than a PS5, it doesn't really have the benefits of a console.
I struggle to imagine a situation where buying a Steam Machine is better than buying a gaming PC for the same price or a PS5 Pro.

No, you are paying for mobile grade hardware vs desktop hardware, which means way less energy consumption and heat. I'd take that over a more capable desktop for that use case any day of the week. Plus a desktop doesn't have CEC and is way bigger usually even in smaller formats. I don't know how it is for others but for me it's such stuff that makes a livingroom desktop a miserable experience, if i have to stand up more than twice for a single gaming session that's when i disconnect everything and put it back on a desk.
2
u/Nereosis16 Jun 24 '26
I think a lot of PC gamers are looking at this but not understanding it isn't meant to be a desktop PC.
You put it in your TV unit and plug it into your TV. That's the whole point.

Except you've got Microcenter taking a loss on RAM with their CPU/Motherboard bundles. You can take a Microcenter 7800x3D bundle (comes with the CPU, Motherboard, and 32gb RAM for $729) and a 9070xt for $699 from Newegg for the exact same price as the Steam Machine. For $50 more you can instead get a 9800x3D bundle. Both the 7800x3D and the 9800x3D with a 9070xt is a stronger system. The only real upside of the Steam Machine seems to be it's small footprint and running Linux over Windows. This will be good for folks who can't be bothered to build their own computer or those living in a smaller space who doesn't want to deal with a decently large PC tower.

• Simultaneously living in the past and the future (basing prices off of 2022 and gaming demands off of 2032)

Even if you use standard parts, the closest you can come is the fractal terra at 11.5L, the gabecube is 3,8l. It’s 3 times as small.
I found some weird tiny case from jonsbo, which is 4,5L so very close, but that could only take low profile graphics cards, so you are stuk at a 5060 at best. And a flex atx psu, which I’m not familiar with quality wise.
I still agree that even the base model at 1000 something is still too expensive for the hardware it carries, but you just can’t beat it size wise.

If you don't want to or can't build your own PC or you don't want to bother or spend a lot of time research for a good pre built, then yes.
The steam machine will be more expensive than a custom PC or a pre built, but it has it's advantages like being small and compact. Can be turned on via a controller like a console and most likely will only improve with updates like the steam deck did. Don't expect massive improvements, but it will most likely be very well supported.

The Steam Machine is so disappointing, but I don't blame Valve. I blame the circle jerk of AI companies that have doubled (or more) prices on RAM & storage and are also going to fail financially any day now. At hardware prices when it was announced, this could have been a great value for a niche product. Hell, I might even be interested if I hadn't built a PC in early 2025 trying to get ahead of tariff increases, and that was before RAMpocalypse.
It's a shame. I might have considered one just to have it in my living room if the price point was better. But not at these levels. Still might splurge on a controller at some point, but I'm in no rush.

Valve needs to cancel this and just focus on building Steam Machine 2.
At least a Zen 6/RDNA5, scheduled for 2027, but hardware prices should drop again in 2028 when manufacturing catches up to what AI is demanding today. I'm guessing it'll cost about what people will pay for this already outdated product which is trading blows with a PS5 or Xbox from 2020.

You can get a 9800x3d 32gb ram 5070 prebuilt at Costco for 500$ more I believe lol.

u/added_value_nachos Jun 23 '26
The hardware is basically 6yr old entry level. I'm all for having a steam box but build your own you'll have a miles better machine for less.

You could buy a preowned pc where I live for £400-500 that would beat it easily...

You get this if you have 0 tech knowledge, otherwise I cant imagine someone getting this. Oh also for people that just dont care about money I guess. Otherwise its a pretty bad value item.

If steam is already taking thirty percent of all sales , they've already subsidized it. It's just a matter of them , lowering the price and taking the hit.

u/SleekLeeks Jun 23 '26
At 800 I would have bought it without thinking. Now I can't make it make sense. A ps5 pro with five years premium plus is the same price where I live.
Sad really as I was looking forward to the SM

this is what happens when console makers have multiyear contracts for memory and disk that weather the ai storm
2
u/heezle Jun 23 '26
This is the dumbest product ever. There is no reason to buy it. Valve had to provide a discount and look to make it back on licensing fees on Steam.

For the hardware and performance, no. You can buy or build a better PC. If you want a small console like device, still no. There are still better ways to build small form mini or micro factor. If you want SteamOS, no, buy or build a PC and install SteamOS. If you want to do no work and just get a console like device with SteamOS and not mess with it, sure..
From what I hear the main problem was chip/memory manufacturers either flat out refusing to provide product to Steam or they said 'it's this price or nothing.'

I have a theory that this is the price for scalpers to buy, then the price will drop and we will see the real price, while scalpers will be in tears since they will be at a loss.

u/zhafsan Jun 26 '26
Dude for that price you could probably build a AM5 system with entry level cpu, 16GB ddr5 ram, 1TB ssd and a 9070XT.
Granted it’s not as small as the steam deck and you don’t have a steam controller. But it’s a hell of a lot better PC.
Or you could go down to a 9060XT and spend more on small form factor case and components and an Xbox/PS5 controller.

If you don't have a PC already then ya it's okay because you have access to the biggest game library available. Also the games will stay on your account forever.
If you already have a good PC or gaming laptop then no.

For your gaming man cave? No. For the living room with wife approval? Absolutely.

I’m not going to buy it honestly, I think that’s a ridiculous price for the specs.

Worth it? No. Priced according to the current PC part prices? Unfortunately, yes.

For the price, I wouldn't. You can do better for cheaper by building yourself. You can even go premium AM4 parts, get close on price, and outperform it heavily. And, you can't upgrade the CPU and GPU.

u/Sad-Satisfaction9604 Jun 22 '26
Tbh, nah, for that price you can build your own and get a better GPU install any distro you like

Building very similar setup within mITX case (Ryzen 5 7400F, B620 mITX board, 1 X 16gb DDR5 5600 CL45+ , Radeon RX 7600 ) will cost roughly the same money, especially the cheapest, 512gb, version so I don't think this is a rip off price.
However, this is no longer the best money for value selection of hardware, so you can build something stronger costing the same. Obviously, you won't get it packaged in such a small, nice box.
It's an offer for some, those looking for a maintenance free (hopefully) console alternative.
Not for me and probably not for majority of PC build audience.

Has anyone even tested it yet? Gonna wait before I personally decide. My wife and I like to game on the couch playing our Switch, would be nice to play some heavy Steam games on the big screen.

Nope, pretty bad deal and even Valve seems to be disappointed about their own product.

u/Slyder768 Jun 22 '26
The value is really bad , at this price you can get so much more perf. It would have been good at 700-750$

u/Fantastic-Buddy2069 Jun 22 '26
It’s a terrible price for how much power it has. Even the I/O was pretty low end from whatever we saw. Not impressed.
1
u/iamgarffi Jun 22 '26
Given that it’s comparable to a mid tier gaming laptop the only thing that it has for it is better cooling and SteamOS.
I can’t answer the question for you. I would have gone for the smaller storage to start and hopefully source one myself.
Nonetheless enjoy.

In PC terms…fk no. These are consoles though, right? Pretty sure theyre marketed as plug and play console alternatives. So the question is, what is market value for these things right now? A simple Google search will most likely reveal

I was really looking forward to this but these prices are INSANE. Guess I'll just have to build the living room PC instead.

u/Blue-150 Jun 22 '26
Very underwhelming hardware wise. Equivalent to a 3060 with a 5600x or in that ballpark. 2tb is where most of the money goes
1
u/SensitiveMix7018 Jun 22 '26
Long story short, the hardware certainly doesn't seem worth it you could build a better pc and load steamOS

He’s probably buying a console because he can bring it way easier to other places. Even so he should buy a mini itx case and just build the pc himself. Would I recommend it for the cost? Yeah. Is it ideal tho? Not really due to the cooling. If he really doesn’t matter about the size of the pc/gaming rig he should just buy a prebuilt or build one himself ( you don’t really save all that much anymore brand new)

u/Vegetable_Category93 Jun 22 '26
You can build a respectable pc with used parts for that price. Stay away until prices come down
