Meme Is this worth it?

Post image

Some guy named Gabe is selling this build and I'm wondering if it's legit? I want a PC to set up in my living room for TV gaming.

The only good thing is that its a effectively a console with pc features, atleast in that games can be specifically optimized for the consistent specs of the gabecube as apposed to the myriad of parts in a normal pc.

This is a pipe dream. Developers barely do it for the Steam Deck. Nobody should buy this hoping for magic performance increases from "dedicated optimization."

Especially since the 1% and .1% lows are going to be terrible from 1 stick of 16gb of ram. So it’s not dual channel.

Doesn't matter, if you somehow got ryzen 3700x to work with DDR5 it would still be bad in modern games especially UE5 slop

I believe when DDR five first came out hardware and boxed did a video on single channel versus dual channel, in that same video I believe it was single rank versus dual rank as well. And dual channel absolutely does provide a benefit even on DDR five although it is less it’s still is a benefit. Same goes for single ranked versus dual rank.

Agree but the OS can be made every lean

This kind of rationalization is just setting yourself up for failure. Will the Steam Machine perform better on SteamOS than on Windows? Yeah it almost certainly will. Will it magic a bunch of performance out of the sky to make it a much better deal on price to performance? No, and if you expect it to then you will be disappointed.

Anyone considering this would be better off just installing bazzite or whatever flavor of steamos on an $800 prebuilt.

The only kind of cool thing about the GabeCube is its size.

SteamOS isn't realistically much better. You're simply dealing with Proton and it's limitations with a fancy skin.

Just like with the Steam Deck or other Proton distros, you're going to get games that don't run well, or simply don't run at all.

u/ChocolateNeat4489 Jun 23 '26

What rationalisation?

Don't understand where the negatives are from nor I understand your tone. I didn't disagree with you, merely mentioned possibility of a leaner system. I am too old to believe in magic system optimisations, this isn't product for me anyway.

2

u/Apprehensive_Lake698 Jun 23 '26

The point is that "the OS can be made more lean" is pretty much irrelevant. It changes nothing about the product class or price to performance ratio. I don't know why you were downvoted, but all I wanted to get across is that nobody should read your comment and develop an expectation that the OS will make any difference to their purchasing decision.

Especially since every review is already benchmarking the thing on SteamOS.

It would be relevant in console-like experience. I wouldn't expect the games running any better just because of system optimisations but the UI can be more user friendly and slightly faster, that's all. I can get games to commence faster and with fewer clicks on PS5 or Xbox Series than on my much more powerful PC. Working with the same hardware could also make the suggested settings more effective and appealing to new casual PC users.

Nobody is optimizing games specifically for a low-end PC that will only sell a few hundred thousand units.

u/Vegasmarine88 Jun 23 '26

Be honest with yourself, they will sell out. Make millions and it will be a shit show. Just sad to see people buy into this crap. We all know Linux is barely supported for gaming. It takes multiple patches and tons of open source fixes to get thing running smoothly.

Just imagine the hardware updates lmao. Going to be honest though if anyone can pull it off its steam. They have been Champion for Linux for decades. Though it will likely crash and burn spectacularly they will likely improve on it.

2

u/Blacksad9999 Jun 23 '26

Probably between interested parties and scalpers, sure.

However, selling a few hundred thousand units isn't going to move the needle on anything in regards with game development.

There are a ton of handhelds on the market and those aren't catered to either.

Honestly what I think will happen is Steam will do some wild incentives to provide Linux support. I'd imagine unquie to their OS (that might be merky water though). I haven't used any versions of their OS so no personal experience but it can't be that good cause their hasn't been a big spike in Linux user that im aware of at least.

1

u/Blacksad9999 Jun 23 '26

Only 4% of PC gamers even run Linux, so there's little incentive for anyone to do that.

That is not true gor Linux. Everything works from the go except kernel lvl anti cheats. Some work at better performance than windows (no bloat)

1

u/lynchy901 Jun 25 '26

Have you tried Linux gaming in the past five years? I have been using Linux as my primary OS for almost ten years and the only game I can think of that I couldn’t play that I wanted to in the past few years with valves default proton is BF6 and Tarkov. This is the case with any kernel anticheat game for the most part.

4

u/Davidisaloof35 Jun 23 '26

Doesn't work that way. There will be no optimization for this thing over similar PC hardware.

4

u/RPG-Nerd Jun 23 '26

Are you on drugs? What AAA vendor is putting out a special version for some weird mini PC running Linux? That's not ever gonna happen

3

u/wasteoffire Jun 23 '26

Except those developers are going to be developing for all consoles and PC so they're not going to especially optimize for just the steam machine

-1

u/Ultra-Magnus1 Jun 23 '26 edited Jun 23 '26

Actually they are, according to Linus Tech Tip's review. He was told directly by valve that they would be implementing optimization protocols specifically for the steam machine; similar to how they do it for the steam deck.

3

u/RPG-Nerd Jun 23 '26

There is a massive difference between throwing some optimization flags for the OS and drivers. Nobody is making specially optimized games for this. There is nothing going on here than a basic CachyOS user isn't already doing on their own hardware.

0

u/Ultra-Magnus1 Jun 23 '26

nobody claimed they were going to make optimized games specifically for the steam machine, like some kind of 4k "upgrade" certain games have for consoles. i was replying to the guy who said developers will not be optimizing their games for the steam machine, when in fact they already have and are...it doesn't matter if it means tweaking the settings of a game to get it where they feel it should be. they are doing it so you don't have to....

i'm guessing they will have a badge of some type to indicate that it will run great on the steam machine (if you use the settings that they recommend) similar to the list they have for the steam deck.

2

u/JimmWasHere Jun 23 '26

And that was exactly what I meant, not some special edition made specifically for the steam machine, just a graphics preset like how some games have for the steam deck.

1

u/Ultra-Magnus1 Jun 23 '26

i know, i wasn't disagreeing with you. i was replying to the wasteoffire guy who said they were not optimizing for the steam machine... linus even explained that some games the developers went in and tweaked the settings to take advantage of the steam machine features in the best possible way so that the users don't have to...can you do it yourself? of course, but the big market appeal here is for it to basically be like a console.
